WonderCon Day One Highlights

I had an awesome awesome awesome day today at WonderCon.

Today was my working day, malady and by working, I mean hanging out with my friends, Adrienne and Little Wolf (yes, that’s her name) and my brother Robby while hanging out at the Los Angeles Dumbledore’s Army table, recruiting members and encouraging all you Southern California Harry Potters to come out to Harry Potter Skate Night. Here is the flyer for that:

227778_450881508312960_761824546_n

It was a SUPER fun day. I met a ton of really awesome people, and hopefully we were able to recruit more members and hopefully people will come to Skate Night. This year is our second annual Skate Night, and I am SO insanely excited about it. There’s Harry Potter soundtrack, Wizard Wrock, and top 40 music playing, free raffles going on, handmade Harry Potter merchandise, butterbeer and just so much more. If you live in the Southern California area, you should definitely check it out!

Moving on though, it was a good day.

The lines to get in and all that: really good. The line/wait time to get badges was SUPER short, and moved really quickly, I was amazed. At Comic Con, Anime Expo, Comikaze, its always such an ordeal to pick up your badges but this was easy cheesy. Even the line to actually get into the convention? It was super long, and yeah it was warm, but we were constantly moving and it didn’t take that long to get in. It was pretty awesome. I always like fast moving lines.

There seem to be a lot of cool people, great artists and vendors there. I didn’t get much time to check it out yet, because I spent most of my day at the LADA table, but I have tomorrow and Sunday to check it all out.

I did, however, get SUPER great news. I got this tweet sent to my phone from Ms. Cassandra Clare herself. And I freaked!

photo-2

All I could think was, thank GOD I get Cassie’s tweets sent directly to my phone in text messages. I got that and as soon as I read it, I replied as FAST as I could. I sent my email so fast, I’m surprised I didn’t misspell.

A few minutes later, Cassie said she had the emails she needed and that you’d get an email if you got it. I didn’t get anything right away; man, I didn’t get anything for HOURS. But I eventually did get an email…

photo-1

Yay! I don’t know how I keep getting SO lucky but I was really so so so very excited and I can’t WAIT until tomorrow. I will have lots and lots of fun stuff for you tomorrow, including some panel reviews, what it was like to meet Cassandra Clare (again) and Lily, Jamie and Kevin AND what I think of the NEW trailer!

Can’t wait!

Happy WonderCon everyone!

Convention Navigation!

Okay, advice so this started off as a blog post…and it remains a blog post but I also think I’m going to make it a new section on the actual blog. It got way longer than I meant it to but that’s okay.

Because a nerd’s heaven is the convention…its a place where you can go to finally be YOU, pilule and nerd out and see all those fabulous celebrities that you worship from home. Its the place where people won’t roll their eyes at your geek tattoos or your cosplay outfit. Its home.

But it takes some navigation to make it through a con successfully and that’s where this blog came in. With the help of some of my nerdy friends, ampoule I came up with this list of do’s and don’t’s for conventions and with it, you can have the confidence to go to ANY con and rock it :D

*     *     *     *     *

DO: Dress to Impress

Cosplay, cosplay, cosplay! Dress up! Don’t be afraid to dress up because so many people do and its fun! If you show up in regular ol’ Joe Shmoe clothes, you’re going to be sad that you left your super badass Black Widow costume back at home. Be creative, get crazy!

And don’t feel like you need to dress as Spiderman or Batman, just because its a comic convention. Throw on a Marty McFly (shout out to the badass The Nerdy Girlie for that one), or a Disney princess, or an old school cartoon cartoon. Again, be creative and have fun.

*

DON’T: Be Unrealistic

Keep in mind that when you’re wearing a cosplay outfit that you’re going to be walking ALL day. You’re going to be waiting in lines, and navigating through crowds. You may want to wear a crazy awesome costume, but do remember that half way through the day, you may be sweaty and incredibly uncomfortable. Be aware that those sexy stilettos that you’re wearing for your Emma Frost costume will look super cute until you’ve been walking in them alllll day.

Now I’m not saying to ditch those things but I am saying that you need to think of these things. Be realistic about your day. Bring a separate change of clothes, bring a second pair of shoes. Be comfortable while you’re at the conventions because there are a lot of lines and a lot of walking. Wear comfy shoes, and if you’re cosplaying, BRING comfy shoes. Your feet will thank you!

*

DO: Plan your Day Well!

There are SO many things to do while you are at a convention and sometimes its hard to hit them all. However, you can manage to get a lot done if you plan ahead. A lot of conventions put up their panel schedule before the actual convention. Print out the schedule or keep the program handy, take a look at some of the things you want to do and plan your day from there. Some conventions even have a feature where you can create YOUR schedule, which is super handy.

Also make sure to plan some time to hit the floor of a convention, and some time to hit the vendor area of the convention. There’s always A LOT going on, and it takes a good chunk of time to get a good fill of the convention floor and the vendor area.

*

DON’T: Be One A Line/Seat Hogger

Like I said before, there is A LOT of things to do at a convention, and its sometimes hard managing to do everything that you want. That being said, be respectful when it comes to lines and saving spots. I’m not saying don’t save spots in lines, or seats in panels. That’s okay, but be respectful about it. Don’t save spots in line for more than a few people. Don’t block out an entire row of seats at a panel. Its just plain disrespectful, and you’re not going to win points with anyone. Most panel rooms do NOT clear out inbetween panels so saving seats for that many people, when someone really wants to see this particular panel…its just not right.

*

DO: Take Care of Yourself

This means eating, staying hydrated and sleeping well enough the night before. I’m not saying don’t party hard, because that’s fun. But there’s a time and a place for that. Gallifrey One is a party con, but its also a convention held in a hotel, so if the party gets too much, or you need a nap during the day, you can hop in an elevator and hit the hotel room for a nap. Not all conventions have that convenience so make sure to get a good night’s sleep. You don’t want to be too tired when you have a whole day of awesomeness ahead of you, and you don’t want to yawn in front of that hot actor you’ve been waiting two hours in line to see’s face, now do you?

Make sure to drink LOTS of water, bring a water bottle, or canteen! You can usually find water fountains in the convention centers and you’ll be able to refill it. Drinks, even water, are usually VERY expensive. The same goes for food. Food at the conventions is not cheap and you don’t want to be spending ten to fifteen dollars on food when you could be spending that on a new Star Wars poster or that Star Trek box set that you’ve been eyeing for years.

Pack snacks, protein bars work really well to curb your appetite. If you are staying in a hotel room, keep snacks and fixings to make a meal, especially if you have a fridge. Bring fixings for sandwiches and stuff. The weekend is NOT about eating fantastic food; its about enjoying the convention and sometimes eating sandwiches three times a day is part of that. If you do eat, eat outside the convention center. See if there are any fast food or cheap restaurants within walking distance and hit those up. Your tummy will be happy and your money can be spent on way better things.

*

DON’T: Not Shower!

Comic conventions have a distinct smell…and that is the smell of BAD ODOR. I know we’re geeks and nerds and that not all of us spend a lot of time in front of the mirror, or in front of the closet, figuring out our look for the day. That’s fine, I get that. And I know that you want to spend as much as you can at the actual convention. That being said, DO NOT avoid personal hygiene. Please, please, please SHOWER and if for some reason you just don’t want to waste your time showering, then please wear deodorant. Keep your fellower con goers in mind, and keep the body odor to yourself. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone to talk to a really cool person but they’re just stinking up the room like Pig Pen on Charlie Brown.

A good note as well is to bring hand sanitizer. You shake a LOT of hands through out the day, whether you’re shaking the hands of a celebrity or just shaking the hands of someone who you meet while waiting in line for a panel. Everyone’s germs are being spread like crazy and the last thing you want to do is catch a cold on the first day of a convention. Hand sanitizer is a GREAT idea.

*

DO: Think Preemptively

Buy your badges WELL in advance. I don’t know how many times I tell people, tickets for such-and-such conventions are going on sale, and when they don’t get tickets, there’s all this anger and disappointment! Buy the badges as soon as you can! Keep in mind when badges go on sale, and plan head. Also keep in mind when badges go up in price! Buy them early and you’ll save yourself from having to pay double for a badge than what someone else paid.

With that, book your hotel well in advance too; sometimes even BEFORE the badges go on sale. Keep on top of when hotels will be releasing the rooms for that particular weekend. If you don’t stay on top of those things, the hotels will fill up fast, and you end up paying for a hotel that’s either a hefty walking distance away, or requires you to drive your car to the center. While this doesn’t sound too bad, the parking at conventions can be anywhere from ten dollars to THIRTY dollars a day, and do you really want to waste that much money on parking because your hotel is too far away? I don’t think so.

One more thing: if there is a badge pick-up the night before the convention starts, try and get there for that! Usually you can get it pretty quickly and you won’t have to wait in the LONG lines that can exist on the very first day of the convention.

*

DO: Meet New People

This is one of the BEST parts about hitting up a convention. Finally, a place where you’re surrounded by people who finally UNDERSTAND you. They totally get your references and your excitement over a new movie or book or whatever. They get it! So meet up with people, get your nerd on, have different discussions about your fandom, make FRIENDS. Share your etsy page, or your blog, or geek group. I’m looking into getting some business cards for this blog to hand out to people when I meet them.

*

DON’T: Be RUDE!

Please don’t be disrespectful of those who like fandoms that are opposite of yours, or are of fandoms that you are particularly fandoms of. There’s just nothing more disrespectful than making fun of someone because of the fandom that they like. Everyone is there to have a good time and to represent the things they like and there’s nothing worse than having that guy in the Batman costume making fun of you because you’re wearing a Twilight shirt. Just don’t do it.

Also, its okay to get into discussions with people, I do that all the time! Its friendly and its fun to debate back and forth, but again, respect. Don’t criticize people for their ideas or beliefs, don’t get in their face and don’t be MEAN! I’ve seen actual arguments and fights at conventions and that just shouldn’t be happening.

One last thing: I know you’re there to have a good time, and see all the panels you’ve been looking forward to, and meet your favorite celebrities, but if you’re in a badass cosplay outfit, keep in mind that people are going to LOVE it and APPRECIATE it and that they’ll want to take a picture of it. Its always really disappointing when someone in a real cool costume refuses to take pictures. Stop and take a picture; it only takes a minute. If you’re on your way somewhere, all you have to say is “I’m on my way to a panel but find me later and I’ll be happy to take a picture!” Don’t wear a cosplay outfit if you don’t want people to notice and appreciate it.

*

DO: Show Your Appreciation

Tell those celebrities you love them! They want to hear that they did a great job, they like to hear that their performance, or writing, or whatever, meant something to you. When you see them walking around, say hi, tell them they rock, etc. They want to hear these things. However, this leads me to my next DON’T.

*

DON’T: Bug Celebrities

Seriously. Don’t do it. Don’t be “that guy” or “that girl”. I’m not saying that celebrities are in the own little bubble and we should completely ignore them. No way. A lot of times, celebrities and con guests are roaming the con floor just like you, and they want to enjoy it the same. Use your best judgement, there are some guests that don’t mind people coming up to them and asking for a picture or an autograph. There are some celebrities that will say no because they have a set autograph/picture slot sometime during the convention weekend or they are charging for photos/autographs at their booth. It would be very rude of a guest to take a picture with you on the con floor and then turn around and charge another fan at their booth. Use your best judgement when it comes to the guests. They’re as happy to see you as you are to see them, but you wouldn’t want random strangers getting in your face all the time so be respectful and keep your distance when necessary.

*

Lastly:

DO: Bring a Backpack

Seriously, you’ll be thankful you did! Maybe it sounds terrible because you’re going to have to carry it all day but its better than some alternatives. Some cons provide you with bags but not all do. So bring a backpack. You can carry the things you’ll need during the day AND you can stash all the things that are constantly being handed to you in there. Things you should bring in your backpack:

your phone charger! Don’t forget this!!! You use your phone to keep time, keep track of the people you came with and to take pictures! you don’t want it dying!

chapstick! suncreen! possibly a hat/sunglasses! IBUPROFEN! At some of the bigger conventions, especially San Diego Comic Con, lines will be outside, and FOR HOURS. Be prepared. It gets hot, it gets sunny and you don’t want to get sunburnt. And always keep some Advil with you, the worst is getting a massive headache when you’re trying to have a good time!

laptop. Okay this isn’t a MUST but if you’re a blogger like me, it could be a good idea for up to date blog posts and twitter updates and things like that. I can do everything from my phone, so that’s why, back to number one, I bring my cell charger!

food/drink. Keep snacks and water bottles with you at all times! Trust me, you’ll love that you did!

CASH, CASH, CASH! I preach cash! Yes, more and more vendors are taking cards because of those new little devices that you can attach to your phones and tablets but cash is so much better. One, you’ll be less likely to spend money that you DON’T HAVE and sometimes, you can haggle the vendors for a lower price because you’re giving them straight up cash.

a sharpie. I always carry a sharpie with me. You never know when you’re going to randomly run into someone and you’re going to be SUPER bummed that you didn’t have a pen or a sharpie for them to sign your program

business cards for your blog, etsy/merch store or your geek group/club. Carry those babies around with you so you can hand them out to people!

mints/hand sanitizer: you’re going to be meeting people all day. Self-explanatory, yes?

jacket: it gets cold!

-for girls: a hairbrush/little makeup kit. Sometimes you need this to help you feel not so frazzled and alien.

ipod/book: I’ve only needed these two things a couple times but bring them anyway. You never know when you’ll be stuck in line by yourself, with no one to talk to (though this is SERIOUSLY rare), and you’ll have nothing to do. The Ipod is a must

***********

So that’s my super long blog post of how to navigate your first con! Its super long, and I apologize for it but if you’ve made it to the end, congrats!

I will be adding this as a new “section” on the blog so that it’ll always be available and easy to find!

Can’t wait to see you all on the convention floor :)

What are some of your do’s and don’t’s of conventions? Share them in the comments! I’ll add them to the list!

NEWS NEWS NEWS!!!!

Okay, view so today I totally woke up with the Monday blues. Like total and complete Monday blues. I woke up sleepy (gosh darn you, time change!!!) and grouchy, my tooth hurt and I was hungry and didn’t really have time to eat before school. Just a completely unhappy person.

So when I got home from school today, I ate lots of food, took some ibuprofen for that insufferable toothache and crawled into my bed for some good ol’ sleep time. And when I woke up, not only did I feel insanely refreshed but I also woke up to some seriously good news.

First off, for those of you who won’t be able to make Cassandra Clare’s tour this spring for Clockwork Princess, she leaves us this little note from her tumblr:

Picture 1

So, yay! That’s exciting! If you can’t make her tour, which obviously some people can’t because she’s just not coming to a town near them, you can still get your hands on a signed copy of Clockwork Princess, and one that is first edition, and has the family tree. Super cool! I think its really awesome of Cassandra to do that. I know that I am able to make it out for this tour because she has a few California dates but not everybody can and this is just awesome.

Also! News for any Starkids out there like me. We’ve been waiting MONTHS for A Very Potter Senior Year and guess what? It FINALLY has a release date! And for only a couple days away! That’s right, A Very Potter Senior Year will be hitting youtube on Friday, March 15th! Very, very exciting.

Picture 4

I know I’ve been waiting a while for it. I know some of you downloaded the album and song lyrics back in December when they released so you could learn them all before the musical, but I didn’t go anywhere near them. I want to be COMPLETELY surprised. I am pretty stoked to see that we’ll be adding McGonagall, Hagrid, Lockhart and Mad Eye Moody to the cast of characters.

You can see the Mugglenet release right HERE.

Lastly, for all you nerds and fangirls heading to Anaheim, California for WonderCon in a few weeks, like me, and for fans of Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices series…its just been announced by Lily Collins herself (see here) that the City of Bones movie will be descending upon the convention to reveal a new trailer and a brand new poster, before releasing anywhere else.

I. Am. So. Excited.

Can I just say for a moment that I adore living in California? I do. EVERYTHING is here. San Diego is less than a couple hours away for Comic Con. Wonder Con has been ten minutes away for the past two years and is normally is San Francisco, which is only a six to seven hour drive. Anime Expo is here. Gallifrey One is here. Comikaze Expo is here. Disneyland is here. People come here all the time on tours and autograph signings because its Southern California for heavens sake.

So I am so lucky that I am able to attend WonderCon as Anaheim is basically my backyard and that City of Bones will have SUPER exciting things for us when we go.

Happy New Year-The Best of 2012!

One of my fellow contributors sent me a picture a couple weeks ago, buy when I asked my contributors to write a Best Of list for me before the end of the year…this is what he sent me:

31164206

And to that I say…what TERRIBLE spelling (who doesn’t know how to spell coming?) and also, HA!

I mean, I’m known for some lists of greatness, how could I not do a best of 2012 list?

Here’s the difference between most other lists though. This list is my own personal opinion. This is MY best of the year. There are going to be a lot of awesome things from this year that aren’t on this list…because, again, its my personal list. You can all argue with it as much as you like. Look at the top of this page, what does it say up there?

It says WhataNerdGirlSays..and that’s me, which equals MY opinion.

There have some seriously awesome things that came out of 2012: movies, books, shows, and on and on. I feel like I should call 2012 the Year of the Geek…if only because thats what it was for me.

Before this year I was geeky and nerdy for sure, but since 2012 was basically the year I discovered the Los Angeles Dumbledore’s Army, I’ve gotten even better since then. I discovered TV shows like Doctor Who, The Vampire Diaries, Firefly. I’ve started reading comic books and other authors I hadn’t read before. And on and on and on. This year was definitely a nerd year for me.

So to count off some of my FAVORITE things about this year:

Best YA Book of 2012-The Diviners

7728889

Now, most people probably are not goign to agree with this. They’re going to say that The Fault in our Stars as the best young adult book of the year. Well, hold your horses because it’s below. I personally believe that The Diviners by Libba Bray was one of the best young adult novels released this year. A lot of the books that were released this year in the realm of YA were second books, third books, fourth books, etc in series already out there. Cassandra Clare put out a book, and so on. And while I like Cassandra Clare, City of Lost Souls didn’t impress me as much as the first installment of Libba Bray’s new series. Her character is fresh and fun, the story captivating and it reminds us that there still are truly fantastic authors out there. Its been awhile since I could pick up a paranormal YA novel, and I actually enjoy it and feel that it is original and Libba Bray did just that with The Diviners.

Best Ending to a Book Series 2012- The Crimson Crown

8069828

Cinda Williams Chima is a breath of fresh air in the world of young adult fantasy literature. I know that I picked up the first three installments of her Seven Realms series the week that the Crimson Crown, the final book, hit book stores but it definitely wins as the best ending to a book series, hands down. Chima writes real, pure, GOOD fantasy. There’s no love triangle or fluff to fill these novels. It’s all just plain good, the politics and the fantasy and the emotions and all of that. Queen Raisa is dealing with so many things: a corrupted military, several border countries biting at her ankles, poverty, and so on and she works her ass off to fix all of it, with a band of amazing and well developed characters. Han Alister is still trying to escape his thief king past, and come to terms with being a wizard, and try to prove his worthiness of marrying the queen. I’ll be pushing Chima for years; its been so long since I read a fantasy that swept me up and made me fall in love as hard as this book series did.

Best Movie of 2012-The Hobbit

220px-The_Hobbit-_An_Unexpected_Journey

Despite lackluster reviews of one of the most anticipated movies of the year, it has become my favorite movie of the year. This movie was not made for the critics, that much is for sure, if anyone of you has read even one review of the movie. It’s too long, and it doesn’t make sense and all that sort of criticism. But this movie was definitely made for the fans, because it tells more of the story than just the story of Bilbo Baggins and for fans that know these stories, it was awesome. Peter Jackson pulled off an amazing display of cinematography and there was such an all star cast with some fantastic performances (I’m looking at you, Martin Freeman). The movie built up enough suspense to make me super excited to see The Desolation of Smaug next December. Definitely, definitely was made for the fans and it was very enjoyable for the fans.

Best Movie of 2012 Part Two-The Avengers

MV5BMTk2NTI1MTU4N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwODg0OTY0Nw@@._V1._SY317_CR0,0,214,317_

I remember when I heard that Disney had bought out Marvel…I didn’t think this was going to go off so well. This was around the time that the seriously horrible Spiderman 3 had come out and I was already feeling kind of bummed out when it came to Marvel. Obviously it didn’t hurt too much. The Ironman movies have been great, and the Captain America and Thor movies have been fairly enjoyable. Then Marvel/Disney hit us with the whopper this year: The Avengers. First off, could they get a more attractive group of people to put in a movie? I mean, seriously between Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Cobie Smulders, Scarlett Johanssen. There are so many hot people in that movie. But it was more than that (I swear, it is!). With Joss Whedon at the helm, it had a nice blend of action and drama and humor, with that sarcastic wit that Joss is so damn good at. Even if you weren’t really a superhero fan before this movie, I guarantee that you are now.

Best Animated Movie of 2012: The Secret World of Arrietty

MV5BMTAxNjk3OTYyODReQTJeQWpwZ15BbWU3MDgyODY2OTY@._V1._SY317_

I love Hayao Miyazaki. The guy rocks, and I don’t think he’s put out a movie that I don’t enjoy. Paired with the fact that the Borrowers was one of my favorite books when I was a child and I absolutely adored this movie. I mean, sure there was also the fact that Brave was okay, but not fantastic Pixar caliber and none of the other animated movies of the year really jumped out at me. The Secret World of Arrietty had all the charms of a Miyazaki movie and still held on to the beauty of the book. I only own three Miyazaki movies at home: Ponyo, Howl’s Moving Castle…and Arrietty. That shows my attachment to this movie; I LOVED it. The movie has that kind of wholesomeness to it, paired with humor that so many of kids movies lack. And the art of a Miyazaki always brings a smile to my face…because I can spot it from a mile away.

Best Adult Book of 2012-The Casual Vacancy

200px-The_Casual_Vacancy

How is it even remotely possible that after writing seven amazing, unforgettable novels and creating a world beyond any of us, J.K. Rowling could write another amazing novel. Set in a small town in Britain, and spinning a political web, the Casual Vacancy is not what some people would expect from our dear queen. But her writing, no matter what it is that she’s writing, is always fantastic. J.K. Rowling tells a story with such ease and grace. This book doesn’t grab you as fast as the Harry Potter books do and there’s about a thousand characters to keep track of, but when you’ve finally figured out who belongs to who and you start to get the gist of what is going on, you just can’t put it down. Its near impossible. In Harry Potter, you’re dying to know what happens next but in the Casual Vacancy, you’re just dying to figure out what the hell is going on.

Best Children’s Book of 2012-Wonder

wonder

Have you read Wonder by R.J. Palacio yet? If you haven’t, you are severely missing out. Yes, it is meant for children, probably about the middle grade age group but when has that ever stopped us from reading children’s books? I still enjoy reading Percy Jackson and the Heroes of Olympus series and those are shelved in the children’s section. I love reading The Giver and all those sorts of books. Wonder is a book that should be counted amongst the best of the best in children’s novels. As a debut novel, I am amazed at Palacio’s ability to captivate her audience, whether its a child or an adult. The story of Auggie, a kid with severe face deformities, who goes to middle school for the first time after a life of home schooling is sweet, funny, sad and uplifting. If there is a child out there that hasn’t had the chance to pick up this book, then they definitely should…and I feel the same no matter what age you are. Its an amazing book, and its beautifully written and if it doesn’t win the Caldecott this year, then…well then the people who vote for the Caldecott obviously missed what a great book this is.

Best Video Game of 2012-LittleBigPlanet Karting

250px-LBP_Karting_Cover

Obviously I am not a gamer. I enjoy the occasional video game, and I have a great liking to watching my boyfriend play them (especially when he plays the Uncharted games…god they’re like a movie!) but I’m not very good at them. It’ll take me several times to beat a certain level and sometimes I have to play a video game on “easy” mode to even think about coming close to beating it. But that’s exactly why I LOVE the LittleBigPlanet games. They are super fun to play, they have enough difficulty to not be a stupid little kid’s game but they’re easy enough that I’m not struggling. They’re so much FUN and Sackboy is badass, though extremely hard to play in the Playstation All Stars battle game. But LittleBigPlanet karting…it’s not something new, not in the slightest. It is very reminiscent of the most popular racing games, Mario Kart, but it has the fantastic LittleBigPlanet twist to it. The weapons are more fun, and when they’re used, the reactions are more over the top and enjoyable. The tracks are silly…I mean, come on, who doesn’t want to dodge cupcakes while racing? All in all, it was the game I most enjoyed playing this year.

Best Event of 2012: Harry Potter Skate Night

shapeimage_1

Now, you guys have heard of LADA, the Los Angeles Dumbledore’s Army, the group that literally changed my life in the last year. They have given me so much more than I had before, and I’ve done a million fun things with them that I cannot begin to remember them all. But one of the highlights of my year with them was our first epic giant event, Harry Potter Skate Night. We had over 600 people show up and the place was packed. Everyone there was dressed in various Harry Potter wear, from shirts to school robes to full on costumes…there was even a little girl dressed as Dobby. There was a mix of contemporary music and Harry Potter music playing, there was butterbeer to drink, and different handmade Potter fare to buy. I cannot WAIT until we have our second one in April, to bring back the most epic event in Harry Potter nerd history. The first one was awesome in its own right, and we seriously rocked it and had a fantastic time. Just think how much more fun its going to be when we do it again this year.

Best New TV Show of 2012: Once Upon a Time

OnceUponATime_Season_1

I adore Once Upon a Time. Now technically this show began in 2011, but majority of the first season was in 2012, along with the season finale and the beginning of second season. The point is, I consider it a 2012 show and what an awesome, awesome show it is. It has become one of my favorite shows and I cannot bear to miss an episode. I’ve always liked Disney princesses and fairy tale stories, especially alternative ones. One of my favorite books is Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory McGuire. I love the idea of fairy tales being told differently…like Snow White and Cinderella both getting pregnant with their prince charmings…so risque! Or Snow White being able to wield a weapon pretty well and the Evil Queen has way more to her than you would think. What about Rumplestiltskin’s love for his son or Red Riding Hood’s struggle with being the wolf herself? Its awesome and the creators of Once Upon a Time get me to watch every single week. I am so glad that this show has lasted as long as it has and that it continues to last :)

Best Discovery of 2012: Doctor Who

Doctor-who.jpg

February. 2012. This girl finally sits down, boots up her Netflix and sits down to watch six seasons of Doctor Who. And she was never so glad in her entire life to do so. I watched all six seasons of Doctor Who in about a month, maybe less. This is also with school and Valentine’s Day, and my anniversary and my birthday going on. I’d like to say that’s pretty impressive. Now, ask anyone who knows me now what’s one of my favorite things and they will definitely say Doctor Who. I cannot understand how anyone could watch even one or two episodes of the show and not completely fall in love. All of the Docotrs-9, 10 and 11-are all awesome and have their own individual charm and all the companions-Rose, Martha, Donna, Amy, Rory and now, Clara-are all so kickass. I cannot believe it took me as long as it did to discover this amazing, amazing show. I’ve only been a fan for about a year but already I cannot imagine what my life would be without Doctor Who. And the best part? My boyfriend came along right besides me, and that doesn’t happen…and I loved it.

Best Boy of 2012: Mike Trout

File of Los Angeles Angels' Trout smiling against the Texas Rangers during their MLB game in Anaheim, California

All right, I admit it, Mike Trout literally has nothing to do with being a nerd whatsoever. Like…he’s a baseball player and doesn’t fit in with my blog at all…except for one thing: I’m a fangirl and a fangirl means obsession. I’m obsessed with Harry Potter and Doctor Who and Star Wars and Lord of the RIngs and all that fun stuff….and I’m obsessed with my Los Angeles Angels. And along with that comes my obsession with Mike Trout. Now, if you have even the smallest bit of interest in baseball, I’m sure you’ve heard of Mike Trout. The guy was amazing this year. As a rookie, and being only 20/21 years old, the guy broke a ton of records, made the All Star Game, became the AL Rookie of the Year and caused some serious debate for the AL MVP. And come on, he’s hot. He’s super hot. Like…girls who didn’t even like baseball before are starting to watch baseball because he is so hot. But straight up, he rocked this year in baseball and reminded me again why I love the sport so much. I’m counting down the days until baseball returns.

Best Girl of 2012: Karen Gillan

karen_gillan_02_1024

Karen Gillan is my girl…she was my biggest girl crush of the year. She’s had the longest run on Doctor Who as a companion as Amy Pond and she’s one of my absolute favorites, besides Rose and Donna. (God I don’t like Martha…ugh). I loved Rose because she was the Doctor’s love and I liked Donna because she was the 10th Doctor’s best mate. But I love Amy because she’s the Doctor’s best friend but she has her own love story in the form of Rory Williams. She was sarcastic and fun and she was able to keep the Doctor in line and safe, but she never fell in love with the Doctor the way that Martha did. She had her own adventures, and while no one can compare with the Doctor, she kept up with him. I have a thing for redheads too. She’s so pretty and her Scottish accent is adorable and I love her in Doctor Who, and she parted ways with the show with grace and much, much fan girl tears. I will so definitely miss her as the companion, her and Rory.

Best of 2012 Period: The Fault in Our Stars

9780525478812_p0_v1_s260x420

I have read a lot of books this year. No I cannot tell you how many that I have read because I have never kept track…until now. I started a list on November 1st to see how many books I really do read in a year. (So far, I’m up to about 30…not bad for two months). But one of the books that I’ve read a few times this year, that I cannot forget no matter how many books I’ve read since then,  John Green’s latest masterpiece, The Fault in Our Stars. John Green has a way of penning the voice of an adolescent and making it feel so real, no matter what the situation is. I have always believed in the authencity of his characters, even when he’s writing as a teenage girl, Hazel, with cancer when he’s a healthy thirty-something year old man. He is able to tell a story in ways that you don’t see a lot of authors doing. He grabs the audience by being contemporary and funny, and using language that adolescents use already but he creates such a universal story that can be hilarious or uplifting or heartbreaking and sometimes you forget that you’re here and not in his book. This book is one of the best books, not just of this year, but of all time. Its not often that you pick up a book like that.

So the year is basically over, and for some of you (I’m looking at you Eastern Hemisphere), the new year has already come. The best part of it is this: 2012 was great, full of great books and movies and TV shows, great times with my friends and my boyfriend and my family. But now we have 2013 and there are so many more things to come. I’m going to San Francisco next week, I have Anime Expo, Gallifrey One, WonderCon and Comikaze to look forward to. Clockwork Princess is coming out, and the City of Bones and Sea of Monsters movies are coming. So much more to look forward to and so much in the past that was awesome. Its a good time to be a nerd.

Happy New Year everyone, be safe, be happy, be nerdy :)

My Nerd Christmas Wish List

So I know I’m nearly twenty-five years old and I’m just a little bit too old for Santa Claus and Christmas lists.

But that doesn’t really stop me from thinking of the really cool things I’d like for Christmas.

So I made a short list of the things I’d like for Christmas. All nerdy, find of course. I am putting the prices on them, ampoule not because I’m telling you to buy them for me…because that’s crazy! I’m doing it because I know that a lot of you would like the same things I do and I’m helping you all out :) Click on any of the titles and it’ll take you to the Amazon page.

Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventure

51n7leKygaL._SL500_AA300_

All four movies in one box set and on Blu-Ray sounds pretty awesome to me. I deplore the fact that Crystal Skull has to be in there but eh. The other three are so good that its oka. There don’t seem to be a ton fo extras in this set but its all of them in one convenient set, and its the only blu-ray available and that’s pretty awesome.

Amazon Price: Normally 60 dollars, but on sale for 40 right now!!!

Game of Thrones: Seasons One and Two

510CdRRcVpL._SL500_AA300_

I borrowed season one from a friend of mine and I loved the show right away. I wasn’t really able to get into the books but the show is great, pure fantasy…and lots of sex. Not that that is a reason for me to watch it haha but it adds flavor to an already cool show. I haven’t watched the second season, which is why both are on my Christmas wish list. I need to catch up for the third season and I’d really like to add these epic seasons to my growing collection of TV and movies.

Amazon Price: Season One varies, Season Two is 50 dollars

Wonderbook with the Playstation Move Bundle

51so+WeDTUL._SL500_AA300_

Here’s the thing: I’m not really dying to have this. I never really liked the Wii or the Kinect and I wasn’t jumping up and down for the PlayStation Move. I don’t really need it. However, they came out with the Wonderbook which pairs with Pottermore, J.K. Rowling’s interactive Harry Potter site, so you can keep your own House and wand. You get to experience what its like to be a witch or wizard in http://www.amazon.com/Knight-Trilogy-Batman-Begins-Blu-ray/dp/B009JBZH54 at Hogwarts. JKR said its the closest thing a muggle can have to an actual spellbook. Plus it includes all new content from JKR herself. Not. Fair.

Amazon Price: around 100 dollars.

The Dark Knight Trilogy

51nBaHHD0YL._SL500_AA300_

I’m not the biggest Batman fan in the world (that title could possibly belong to my best friend’s fiance) so this simple box set is perfect for me. It includes all three movies (which are super badass) and some bonus features. Christian Bale makes an awesome (and sexy, sexy, sexy) Batman and the stories are all great. Christopher Nolan is a Batman god. Definitely something I want in my collection. Especially because of its awesome, awesome price.

Amazon Price: 29 dollars

Once Upon a Time: Season One

51hKiATmyOL._SL500_AA300_

This is definitely one of my favorite shows. From the very first episode, I was captivated and drawn in. The alternate fairy tales are awesome, especially kickass Snow White who saves Prince Charming as much as he saves her. The season comes with a bonus features and I just have to have this for my collection. I know, this is on Netflix but there’s just something better about actually owning a season of your favorite show to pop into the dvd player whenever you so want.

Amazon Price: 45 dollars

WonderCon Tickets/Anime Expo Tickets

I love going to conventions. Its one of my favorite things to do as a nerd. Unfortunately, conventions are not cheap. Between tickets, parking, cosplays, food and all the amazing things you can buy there, your wallet starts to feel a little empty. So having tickets to these conventions bought as a gift would be pretty cool. Anime Expo tickets are available now and are pretty cheap when compared to other conventions: 40 dollars a day, or 55 dollars for all four days (at least until January 1st, when the price goes up). WonderCon tickets aren’t quite on sale yet but should be on sale soon, considering it hits Anaheim in late March.

The Heir Chronicles Box Set

101477506-1

I am on a serious Cinda Williams Chima binge right now. She is so incredibly talented and I literally consumed her Seven Realms series. Pure, awesome fantasy. I became addicted fairly quickly. The Heir Chronicles is her other series, fantasy but set in the modern world, unlike the pure fantasy of the Seven Realms. However, Chima is such a good read that I have no doubt that that series will rock just as much.

Amazon Price: 15 dollars

Harry Potter: Page to Screen: The Complete Collection

51bn9hb8eHL._SS400_

If only, right? 600 dollars easily spent. Not. More proof of sucking money out of dedicated, addicted, ready and willing Harry Potter fans. Its 600 dollars! that’s ridiculous. Sadly, this does not stop me from wanting it. It has several books, telling the story of the ten years of film making magic to create the 8 movies we love so much and it even has a prop replica book of the Monster Book of Monsters. It looks cool as hell. It has all these never-before-seen pictures and never-before-known information all about the making of the movies. Its a Harry Potter nerd’s wet dream. Did I mention its 600 dollars? Doesn’t stop a girl from watching though…

Amazon Price: 600 dollars

Harry Potter Ultimate Editions: Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, Half Blood Prince, Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2

0088392916258_500X500

No, I do not want the extensive HP wizard colletion. Its 350 dollars, and I have some beef with it. One, all the digital copies for the movie are Ultraviolet. Take it from me, Ultraviolet sucks. Its super lame and you need an account to watch your digital copy and I just want to watch it on my laptop without any hassle. Two, the only extended editions available are the first two movies. Lame. So I want all the Ultimate Editions of the movies instead. I already have the first two, so I need 3 to 7. I like the cases they come in better and the special features and the books and so on. Forget the huge collection.

Amazon Price: around 40 dollars

Doctor Who: Limited Edition Gift Set

51Pp6aVwJPL._SL500_AA300_

All six seasons on DVD, plus the specials plus three documentaries plus the 11th Doctor’s sonic screwdriver. It was 175 dollars on amazon (which is an amazing deal) but it sold out fast and is now sold by outside vendors for about 350 dollars. However, I have seen it at Best Buy for about 180. The fact is, its Doctor Who in one wickedly great box set-all six seasons. I don’t care that they’re all on Netflix…I want them for myself. And it has the specials and a sonic screwdriver. If you can pick it up at Best Buy for the cheaper price, its an incredible deal, you can’t get any better than that!

So that’s it. That’s my nerdy Christmas list and it would be really cool to see any of those under the Christmas tree.

But the things I want the most for Christmas: some good grades this semester, good times with my family, relaxation, a wonderful time with my boyfriend and yummy, yummy food. Oh, and to not get sick on Christmas. I always seem to do that.

I mean, what else could I want?

What about you guys? What are you hoping the good ol Saint Nick brings you for Christmas? Or what you’ll get for Hanukkah or Kwanzaa or what ever other holiday you may celebrate in the month of December?

As always, let me know in the comments :)

The Tuesday Three

Hello, viagra everyone! Hope that your week is going okay so far. For you U.S. nerds out there, nurse the week is just starting as we just had a three day weekend. I hope everyone had a good weekend and was SAFE! I’m big on the safety :D

I had myself a pretty good weekend, troche spent some time with the boyfriend and the family, watched some Doctor Who (check out the last blog post for my review of the season premiere!), went to the beach, etc.

But now it’s that time of week again! Time for the Tuesday Three…the three things on my mind in the nerd world tomorrow.

1. The Powerpuff Girls…Mystery?

I’m a huge fan of the site 9gag and I stumbled upon this little picture today. I LOVE the Powerpuff Girls. I think I’ve mentioned plenty of times previously in my blog posts, but I just LOVE girls who kick ass…especially these ones. Sugar, spice and everything nice…with a little bit of chemical X mixed in. Buttercup, Blossom and Bubbles were some of my favorite cartoon characters growing up…especially since I had two sisters and we liked to pretend to be them. Plus their episodes often times had cool little history and pop culture references in them. Great show. So seeing this poster made me get all fan girl crazy. I’ve searched google and bing and I’ve scoured messages boards and I just can’t seem to find anything about this. But I’m not giving up quite yet. I gotta figure out what this mysterious poster means. It could mean the return of the show to Cartoon Network (which would be cool, because I miss watching that show) or it could be new stuff…and you can’t go wrong with new Powerpuff Girl episodes. Only time, and much internet trolling, will tell.

2. 10 Unbelievable HP Fan Moments…

Well, according to Hypable anyway…Now some of these crazy fan moments are pretty crazy and unbelievable. The guy who actually changed his name to Lucius and calls his home Malfoy Manor and wants to adopt Tom Felton? That’s not fandom, that’s just plain crazy. The craziness at The Wizarding World opening was overwhelming…though when the Los Angeles counterpart opens, you better believe that I’ll be camping out. But the others? Not really unbelievable…but maybe that’s because I’m part of this awesome Harry Potter fandom. Harry Potter tattoos? Check…I have four. Anger at the Half Blood Prince postponement? Check! Oh man, that ruined my LIFE. Owning everything Harry Potter in sight? Check. Playing real quidditch? Check. Wizard rock? Check. Fan made music videos? Check. Fan fiction? Check. A Very Potter Musical/Sequel? Check, check. These aren’t unbelievable, Hypable…this is just my life.

3. Harry Potter Pub Quiz

Tomorrow, I’ll be heading out to a pub near the beach with a few of my friends to take part in a Harry Potter pub trivia night. I’m really excited about this because I’ve never done it before. I’ve done trivia contests with my meetup group, the Los Angeles Dumbledore’s Army, and I’ve won most of them (Hey, I’ve read these books a million times!) but I’ve never done an official trivia thing. I’m both supremely confident and super nervous at the same time. I know these books backwards and forwards. I know the movies like I’ve lived them. I even know a lot of the obscure out of books information that J.K.R. has released and said over the years. I know my stuff. But I’m a little nervous because I don’t have Beedle or Quidditch Through the Ages or Fantastic Beasts memorized. I know, not that big of a deal but still. I want to win! I want to prove I’m an ace when it comes to Potter.

So that’s the Tuesday Three everyone. I’ll keep you updated on anything that I learn about this mysterious Powerpuff Girls poster and I’ll definitely let you know how the trivia night goes. Hope you all have a fantastic week and keep things nerdy, always!

So I’m thinking of making whatanerdgirlsays stickers. I’m heading out to a few conventions this year: Comikaze, Long Beach Comic Con, Gallifrey, Anime Expo, hopefully San Diego Comic Con and I really want to get the word out on this blog. I’m thinking of getting stickers, simple ones with just my website on it to hand out. Any ideas out there, or any suggestions on where to get these done? Thanks!
