Blogger Spotlight-Kayla from The Thousand Lives

One of the best parts about running this blog is having the ability to meet some really cool people, drugs and some of the coolest people that I have met have led me to really cool blogs. I’ve said it before, no one’s blog is 100% original but everyone’s voices are different so there are blogs that I love to read because I love the writer, and I love the passion that they show for what they are writing. They are fun and interesting to read and they inspire me to get better and better in my blog.

So I decided to do a feature (inspired by Megan at the Nerdy Girlie’s Geek Girls Gab), where I profile the bloggers that I love. Not only do I get to find out more about them, but I also get to share them with you guys! Most of the bloggers that I follow are like me, nerd girls, fan girls and they enjoy the same things as me, and you! Every blogger that I profile is one that is super important to me and I urge you to check them out!

If you are interested in being featured on the Blogger Spotlight, feel free to contact me, please! I would love to hear from you, to feature you on the blog and to help spread the word about it!

Sara: Tell me a Little Bit About Yourself:

Kayla: Kayla, 18, graduated with a Bachelor’s in English (yes, yes I know it’s a long story but the short answer is online college), currently a high school literature teacher, Algebra II teacher (both at a homeschool program), and a chiropractic assistant. Habitually introverted and hermit-like. My dog is my constant companion in my blogging and reading adventures. I’m fluent in English, Spanglish, sarcasm, and fangirl. I can also read Shakespeare quite easily and most of my friends cheated off my papers.

I’m afraid I’m quite uninteresting after that! I work a lot, and in my spare time I try to recuperate by reading books or catching up on/rewatching my favorite tv shows (Supernatural, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Avatar: The Last Airbender + Korra, Spongebob, and Criminal Minds). I love teaching, and sometimes (okay, 99% of the time) I’m far more excited for the books we read in class than my students.

Sara: Tell me about your blog:

Kayla: My blog is to mainly categorize the books that I’ve read, and the thoughts I had about them. Too often I forget everything after I put the book back on my shelf! It’s just an extra bonus that I get to meet so many people and actually talk about my interests with them :) My original feature is called Standing On My Soapbox, and it’s basically my discussion posts, every Thursday, where I talk about what’s been on my mind (bookish or not). I also take part in a few memes like Top Ten Tuesday, WWW Wednesday, and Stacking the Shelves.

Sara: What inspired you to start your blog?

Kayla: Originally I was going to have it as a platform for my writing, but then I discovered so many amazing blogs and bloggers that I switched over to book blogging. I have them to thank for my return to reading!

Sara: What is your favorite nerd memory?

Kayla: Definitely the first season finale I watched (Supernatural season 8) while I had a tumblr. Knowing that so many other people were freaking out at the same time as me was just amazing. I’ve never felt a part of something like that before!

Sara: What are you most looking forward to, as far as new books/movies/etc?

Kayla: Sherlock. Series. Three. January 19th. My body is ready. I can’t afford/travel to cons. And as far as book releases, I’m most looking forward Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo (June!). I don’t know much else, since I’m still getting into all this. I rely on my friends to get me on the ball as far as releases go! OH wait!!! And then Tuesday October 29th I get to meet Leigh Bardugo with the lovely Sara :)

(I am so excited to meet Kayla at the Fierce Reads stop on Tuesday! Its going to be awesome!)

photo 2

Sara: As my blog is mostly about books and reading, what are some of your favorite books or authors to read?

Kayla: I don’t really have a favorite author, to be honest. But some of my favorite books are The Hobbit, Left Drowning by Jessica Park, Backward Glass by David Lomax, Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo, Eragon, Catching Fire, The Raven Boys… and so many more it’s not even funny.

Sara: What are some of your favorite blogs to follow?

Kayla: Flip That Page, Books for  Delicate Eternity, Adrift on Vulcan, Books and Beautiful World, Andi’s ABCs, Respiring Thoughts, Chrissi Reads, Always Lost in Books, In Italics, Talking (Blogging) Bookworm, Effortlessly Reading.

Sara: Who is your fictional crush (what, we’re nerd girls, we all have one!)

Kayla: Are you actually ready for this answer? Because I think we could be here all night. But I’ll keep it to five: Peeta Mellark, Eowyn (girl crush ftw), Dean Winchester, Stormhund, Finnick Odair. I lied. We’ll go for five more: Etienne St. Clair, Tobias Eaton, Raffe (from Angelfall), Fear (from Some Quiet Place), and Ryan (from the Hybrid Chronicles).

Sara: Tell me a Little Bit About Yourself:

Jade: My name’s Jade and I’m an 18 year old girl living in Los Angeles. I’m pursing an acting career, so right now am on sets most of the days of the week doing background work on various thing to make money while going out on auditions and doing short films and taking classes. I’m currently on a YouTube series called Teens React. I love going to concerts, specifically Paramore who I’ve seen 23 times live, and watching Netflix and reading a lot in my spare time, and lots of times putting off other things to finish a good book haha.

Sara: Tell me about your blog:

Jade: I run a Vampire Academy fansite called Dhampirs and Dragomirs, the name comes from the race of half human half vampires, called Dhampirs, and one of the main characters, Lissa Dragomir, last name. It’s dedicated to getting all the latest news and information on the Vampire Academy and Bloodlines book series by Richelle Mead, and news on the movie of Vampire Academy coming out Valentines Day next year. There are also gonna be many contests to win VA swag, and a forum board coming soon. On the website you can find out about all the different books in the series, events of the cast and author coming up, the cast of the movie, and much more.

Jade at the Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Los Angeles Premiere. This is where we met!

Sara: What inspired you to start your blog?

Jade: I was inspired to start my blog after I went to the Mortal Instruments Los Angeles premiere and talked to quite a lot of fansites for it, and heard all the amazing stories, connections, and more they had all had. I had thought about starting a website for a while, but I wasn’t sure what for. I had seen there weren’t really many Vampire Academy fansites, and it’s my all time favorite book series, and I love and have so much passion for this world, and then especially with the movie coming out, I finally decided to just do it. :)

Sara: What is your favorite nerd memory?

Jade: Oh god, this is a hard one. Are nerd and fangirl considered the same? Haha. I guess my favorite nerd memory is that for the past couple years I go to the Festival of Books every year to meet some of my favorite authors, go to panels, get books signed, and of course buy books. I always have a great time going, and I first met Richelle Mead a few years ago there and was freaking out when I found out she was gonna be there and had an amazing time meeting her!

Jade and Vampire Academy author, Richelle Mead!
Jade and Vampire Academy author, Richelle Mead!

Sara: What are you most looking forward to, as far as new books/movies/etc?

Jade: Um, obviously the Vampire Academy movie!! You have no clue how long I’ve been waiting for it to be made, and now it’s finished shooting and I just have to stick it out till February to see it! Also really looking forward to The Fault In Our Stars, Catching Fire, Divergent, and American Hustle to come out. I’m loving American Horror Story:Coven and Once Upon A Time right now, and can’t wait for The Carrie Diaries to come back on (I never even watched Sex and the City but I LOVE this show, no guilt haha). Book wise obviously The Fiery Heart in the Bloodlines series by Richelle Mead, Allegiant by Veronica Roth, Cress from the Lunar chronicles by Marissa Meyer, Dreams of Gods and Monsters from the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series by Laini Taylor, Ignite Me from the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi, and many more but I just can’t think of them right now! I’m excited for WonderCon next year, and of course the Festival of Books again, and am hoping to attend ComicCon too!

Sara: As my blog is mostly about books and reading, what are some of your favorite books or authors to read?

001

Jade: Well obviously all the authors of the books I mentioned above, and of course Richelle Mead. Her adult books are also fantastic, Gameboard of The Gods was amazing and so is her Dark Swan series, so if you like her YA stuff definitely check that out. I love all of Ellen Hopkin’s book, they are all written in a really cool way, kind of like poems, and are phenomenal contemporary stories. Diana Peterfreund, just finished For Darkness Shows the Stars and it was beautiful, also her killer Unicorn series I adored (yes you heard right, killer unicorns haha.) Rachel Caine’s The Morganville Vampire series, Jodi Meadows, all of Cassandra Clares books, The Hunger Games, Brodi Ashton, Lauren Destafano, Carrie Ryan, Deb Caletti, Jeri-Smith Ready…..and so many more. If you really want to see all my favorite books and authors it might be easier to just go on my goodreads and look lol. (Check out Jade’s GoodReads here).

Sara: What are some of your favorite blogs to follow?

Jade: Ahh I actually don’t follow many blogs, I know I know shame on me! But of course the wonderful What a Nerd girl says and I love Krys from Biblopunkk! She writes great reviews and has turned me on to many amazing books/series I would’ve never known about if it wasn’t for her. She’s basically my book filter since we have very similar tastes in books, anything she gives a 4 or a 5 I put it on my list, and anything below I’m cautious of. She also always hosts great ARC giveaways, and I recently won one! So go check her out! Ahh I actually don’t follow many blogs, I know I know shame on me! I’m looking for more awesome bloggers to feature, so if there’s a blog that you enjoy to read, let me know and I’ll contact them.

Sara: Tell me a Little Bit About Yourself:

Sarina: I’m Sarina. I live on Long Island with my husband,Tim and our dog, Gypsy. I am a Children’s and Teen librarian so naturally I love to read. In my spare time I make all sorts of fun creations by means of sewing, painting or re-purposing. Many of the things I create are available in my Etsy shop. When I’m not creating I’m consuming! I love all of the wonderful things geek culture has to offer and I’m always looking for the next thing to fall in love with.

Sara: Tell me about your blog:

Sarina: Nerd Craft Librarian is pretty much explained in its title. On the blog you can find all of the home made crafts that I have constructed over the years. As explained earlier, many of them are inspired by pop-culture and the fandoms that I love. I frequently feature tutorials of step-by-step instructions on all of the wonderful things that I make.

I’m lucky enough to have a job where I am able to incorporate both my love of crafts and geek culture. When I do certain things at work I like to feature them on the blog in what I call, “Library Life” I’m so proud of some of the things I get to do that I want to share it with the world. Some recent posts include a Doctor Who party and Harry Potter celebration.

The blog is also a journal, a way for me to keep track of what I’m doing and how I have evolved, not just as a crafter or librarian but as a person. So these types of posts can range in topics from what I’m currently reading, opinions about nerd related things or what I did the past week.

Sara: What inspired you to start your blog?

about_Accessories.jpg

Sarina: As I honed my crafting skills, I became confident enough to share my creations and techniques. I am also an avid blog reader. Many techniques and skills I learned from DIY blogs. I wanted to pay it forward to the next person in need of some crafty guidance. Later the blog expanded to feature ideas and inspiration for fellow librarians. We live in an age of shared intelligence and there is no reason to keep it to yourself.

Sara: What is your favorite nerd memory?

Sarina: Harry Potter has a special place in my heart. Before I discovered those books I was a struggling student that thought reading was dull. After reading the first one, it made reading magical. There wasn’t one certain moment that stuck out in particular. Its a mix of all of the HP related events, I loved the midnight book releases and movie premieres. I would dress up and meet all sorts of other wizards that loved this books as much as I do. I have been to the Wizarding World theme park twice now! I nearly cried each time we rode on the Forbidden Journey.I recently held a Harry Potter celebration for kids and teens at my library. It makes me so happy that it survives to the next generation. There is a Harry Potter quote that sums up what not only Harry Potter is like but what all fandom is like “…its real for us”

Photo 11

Sara: What are you most looking forward to, as far as new books/movies/etc?

Sarina: I’m totally in love with Doctor Who right now. I’m so excited for the 50th anniversary special! I’m so excited that I’m planning on throwing a little Who themed soiree! The week before the special airs, Long Island will be hosting its first Doctor Who convention where I’m going to be cosplaying as the 11th doctor.

Sara: As my blog is mostly about books and reading, what are some of your favorite books or authors to read?

Sarina: Raina Telgemire. She writes graphic novels from a teenage girls perspective. I normally shy away from realistic fiction. There is something about her writing that makes it good and relatable. She injects a mix of humor and emotion that suck you into the story.

Brain Selznick is another great author/illustrator. His books are super duper think, but there is a mix of text and pictures. The two mediums play off each other so well that his books are cinematic.

Sara: What are some of your favorite blogs to follow?

Sarina: The Nerdy GirlieEmergency AwesomeUcreate

NCL_185x93

Sara: Who is your fictional crush (what, we’re nerd girls, we all have one!)

Sarina: Han Solo. I also like Malcolm Reynolds, however Han is the original space cowboy, he’s a scruffy looking nerf herder with a heart of gold.

Sara: Do you have any fandom/nerd-related tattoos at all? Please share them!

Sarina: I don’t have any tattoos yet! However I really want to get ‘Expecto patronum’ on my foot. A group of friends and I (other whovians) also want to get a group tattoo. I’m leaning towards something written in Gallifrian.

Sara: Tell me a Little Bit About Yourself:

Erin: My name is Erin and I’m from Michigan and I’m of an indeterminate age. :D

Uh, I guess I’ve always been a fan girl of sorts. I started making websites for bands that I liked when I was 14 and I really haven’t stopped since. The one “fan site” of mine that stuck is http://www.killhannah.net, though I haven’t really updated that in a couple of years because 1.) They’re on a hiatus and 2.) I’m the webmaster for their official site (yes, being a dedicated fan girl will get you somewhere sometimes. ;D)

You know, as I was writing my answers to the questions for this blogger spotlight and looking for pictures, I finally realized I’m a serious fangirl.

My real Hello Kitty tattoo and my temporary Hunger Games tattoo. (Sara: I am SO into the fact that Erin has a  Hello Kitty tattoo!)

Sara: Tell me about your blog:

Erin: It’s called Mel, Erin & Regina Read A Lot. It started out with just me and my brother’s fiancee, Melanie, and then our friend Regina joined us. If you haven’t figured out by now, it’s a book blog with reviews, author interviews etc. ;)

Sara: What inspired you to start your blog?

Erin: Melanie and I read, A LOT (dur) and we we were beginning to not be able to afford our reading habit. I told Melanie late last year that we should start reviewing books because we can get ARCs to read in exchange for reviews lol..so we thought about it..and eventually MEReadALot was born. ;)

Sara: What is your favorite nerd memory?

Erin: Hm, one would have to be when I was reading the liner notes to Kill Hannah’s major label debut, For Never & Ever, and seeing my name in the thank yous. Also again a few years later when reading my FULL name in the Thank Yous in the liner notes for Wake Up The Sleepers..and recently I nerded out when an author acknowledged me in her last book. ;D

The most hilarious nerd moment(s) I’ve had are when I got my first Edward Cardboard Cutout and I took him EVERYWHERE. I have tons of hilarious photos from his outing..he went to my brother’s house, to my job, and as you noticed above, he even goes on vacation with me.
One of the greatest Cardboard Cullen moments EVER:

Sara: What are you most looking forward to, as far as new books/movies/etc?

Erin:  Now that Obsidian has been optioned for a movie, I CANNOT WAIT FOR IT.

I also can’t wait for 50 shades of Grey. Today it was announced that Charlie Hunnam was cast as Mr. Grey. I don’t know how to feel about this… as I would’ve liked to have seen Matt Bomer or Henry Cavill as Christian Grey..But oh well. ;) I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

Sara: As my blog is mostly about books and reading, what are some of your favorite books or authors to read?

Erin:  Anything by Kristen Ashley. She writes the best f*ckin’ alpha males. If you haven’t read her Rock Chick series, YOU HAVE TO. It’s entertaining as hell and has some amazing characters.
Anything by Jennifer L. Armentrout, The Grab Your Pole series by Jenn Cooksey, That Boy and That Wedding (I cannot wait for the next book, That Baby) by Jillian Dodd, Alice Clayton (her books are freaking HILARIOUS), I could go on and on..why don’t you just look at my read list on Goodreads. I can read between 1-2 books a day, depending on what’s going on that day…so I love many, many books. :)

One of the best parts about running this blog is having the ability to meet some really cool people, approved and some of the coolest people that I have met have led me to really cool blogs. Sara: Tell me a Little Bit About Yourself:

Amber J: I’m 27, a mom of a crazy monster named Lola Kate, and two boxer babies (Zuma and Zoey – my first kids lol)  Married 3 years (yep even fangirls get married), I have lots of fictional boyfriends, my husband’s not a jealous man, thankfully. I’m a huge LSU football fan, music and book junkie, totally obsessed fangirl. My day job is a stay at home mom and I also distress and rehab furniture on the side along with offering review and beta read services (among others) to authors.

Sara: Tell me about your blog:

Amber J: GrownUp FanGirl is run by myself and Kameron (who isn’t a girl at all – but is a self proclaimed fangirl – yes. Fanboys DO exist), we are geared towards the older crowd (as in 18 and up) who still enjoy the young adult or new adult reads. (But we welcome anyone!) we offer book reviews, character teaser edits and beta reading services for authors, and we are working on a database where you can find out how to get all of your favorite authors books to your house – signed by the author! We host giveaways, and participate in blog tours, cover reveals, and everything book-blog related!

image-2

Sara: What inspired you to start your blog?

Amber J: Originally my blog was a place for people to come find reviews on handmade goods, but like any grownupfangirl I got bored with it and really just wanted to talk about all my fave things – which are books and fictional boys. What’s better than having a “job” where you read? I wanted to put my journalism and marketing education to use – so, I made the switch. I couldn’t be happier! The book blog community is the nicest around!

Sara: What is your favorite nerd memory?

image-5

Amber J: Oh so many. The one that’s probably my all time fave is from when I was a freshman in high school – I stole a brick from where Lance Bass was building his house near me …. Lol and that same year my friends and I dressed up as NSYNC and went trick or treating at Lance’s house. He wasn’t there – but his parents took pics! I’m in the Bass family album! Haha!

(I hope Amber was able to check out NSYNC on the VMAs last night!)

Sara: What are you most looking forward to, as far as new books/movies/etc?

Amber J: City of Heavenly Fire, and all things Cassandra Clare (including the movies. Yeeee!), the Vampire Academy: Bloodsisters movie, the next two books in the Bloodlines series by Richelle Mead (The Fiery Heart, and Silver Shadows, respectively), Allegiant and all 4 short stories about Four by Veronica Roth, the release of Hopeless by Keri Neal (follow up to Flightless. I’ve been a huge part of developing Hopeless so I’m excited to see it come to life), and the second Fires of Providence book – Crisis by Dawn Jayne (another book I’ve been with since the beginning and have helped market) … Sigh. Lol all the books – to – movies coming out! And the soundtracks!

image-3

Sara: As my blog is mostly about books and reading, what are some of your favorite books or authors to read?

Amber J: Haha! See above! Richelle Mead, Cassandra Clare, Veronica Roth (I will devour anything these ladies write) I love indie and unknown writers too! Some of my faves: Dawn Jayne, Keri Neal, JC Emery, Kristi Cook (she’s from my old college stomping grounds – if you love vampire academy/Harry potter – you’ll love her series: Winterhaven) and if you like UK reads – Teodora Kostova (new adult)

Sara: What are some of your favorite blogs to follow?

Amber J: WhatANerdGirlSays (obviously), Richelle Mead’s “Even Redheads Get the Blues“, Cassie Clare’s tumblr and Veronica Roth’s tumblr and Jamie Bower’s tumblr and Shailene Woodley’s tumblr.

Don’t forget to check out last week’s spotlight on Jackie from Stardust and Shadowhunters, and other bloggers here.

Blogger Spotlight: Jackie from Stardust and Shadowhunters

One of the best parts about running this blog is having the ability to meet some really cool people, nurse and some of the coolest people that I have met have led me to really cool blogs.

Jackie: I’m 21, and I drink a lot of coffee. I’m a freelance web designer/developer in Pittsburgh, but I’m from Youngstown, born and raised. I’ve been a monster and makeup artist at Canfield Scaregrounds Haunted House for 8 years this year, and I’m going to the Tom Savini SFX Makeup School in February. I’m also in the process of writing a book. I’m a crafty lady with a knitting machine and I make a lot of cool things. Some of said “cool things” include jewelry, tiny book charms, and scarves. I’m a bit of a hybrid nerd, because I’m a nerd of many feathers. I’m in more fandoms than I can count, but I’m also rather tech-savvy. I get it from my mom, who is a dorky intellectual as well. I also collect comic books and graphic novels – mostly horror-themed. I’m a rather nifty person and I love meeting new people, so feel free to message me!

Sara: Tell me about your blog:

Jackie: Stardust and Shadowhunters is my multifandom blog, despite the name. It’s a play on the phrase “We are but dust and shadow” by Horace, which is used in the Shadowhunter world (Mortal Instruments, Infernal Devices, etc). My blog is relatively new, but I can promise lots of pretty fabulous content in the near future involving news and my opinions on all my fandoms (Shadowhunters, Doctor Who, Supernatural, Sherlock, Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit, Harry Potter, ASOIAF/Game of Thrones, anything by John Green, Hemlock Grove, Warm Bodies, Hunger Games, Beautiful Creatures, Horror movies, Comic books, Zombies, and more!), as well as some goodies (ringtones, fanmixes, etc.) for you all.

Sara: What inspired you to start your blog?

Jackie: I’m a writer by nature, and I haven’t been doing much writing lately. Why not write about things I love to people who love the same things? I don’t go to many events that I can blog about, but I have a talent for making nifty things that other people can use, such as graphics, ringtones and playlists. I’m also an opinionated human. Blogging gives me a chance to get my opinions out there.

Sara: What is your favorite nerd memory?

Jackie: Due to the tragic lack of events on my side of the US, I don’t get to meet many celebrities who aren’t in bands. Despite my hideous lack of celeb cred, my favorite nerd memory would definitely have to be my very recent trip to NYC. We skipped the generic tourist traps in favor of the discovering the weirder side of the city. We went to Obscura (the store from Oddities) and bought strange things and found as many fandom-related landmarks as we could. We visited the Literary Walk even went to the Ripley’s Museum.

Sara: What are you most looking forward to, as far as new books/movies/etc?

Jackie: City of Bones comes out in less than a week! I’m pretty excited for City of Heavenly Fire as well. November 2013 is going to be a pretty fantastic month for the nerd community as well, with Catching Fire, Sherlock, Supernatural, etc. I also think I’m going to enjoy Vampire Academy, but I plan on rereading the books before I watch the movies.

Sara: As my blog is mostly about books and reading, what are some of your favorite books or authors to read?

Jackie: Cassandra Clare, John Green, J. K. Rowling, George R. R. Martin, Garth Nix…. The list is endless. I’m also rather fond of classics, like Great Expectations and Wuthering Heights.

Sara: What are some of your favorite blogs to follow?

Jackie: Obviously, whatanerdgirlsays! I also enjoy City Of Shadowhunters, FanGirlFeeels, I Am Divergent, ifandomscollide, NovelReality, YA On My Mind , and The Librarian Who Doesn’t Say Shhh.

I’m also rather fond of a web comic called Questionable Content, written by Jeph Jacques. Check it out! Just make sure you read it from the beginning.

Sara: Who is your fictional crush (what, we’re nerd girls, we all have one!)

Jackie: Most definitely Will and Jace Herondale. I’m a sucker for intelligence paired with killer combat skills and a sense of self-loathing that only a Herondale boy can be born with. (:
