Jessi Kirby

Bio-Picture

Jessi Kirby is the author of  Goldenwhich will be released in May of 2013, MoonglassIn Honor.  She is also a former English teacher and librarian, wife, mom, beach lover, runner, and lover of Contemporary YA, strong coffee, and dark chocolate.  In that order. You can find her at:

Honor receives her brother’s last letter from Iraq three days after learning that he died, and opens it the day his fellow Marines lay the flag over his casket. Its contents are a complete shock: concert tickets to see Kyra Kelly, her favorite pop star and Finn’s celebrity crush. In his letter, he jokingly charged Honor with the task of telling Kyra Kelly that he was in love with her.

Grief-stricken and determined to grant Finn’s last request, she rushes to leave immediately. But she only gets as far as the driveway before running into Rusty, Finn’s best friend since third grade and his polar opposite. She hasn’t seen him in ages, thanks to a falling out between the two guys, but Rusty is much the same as Honor remembers him: arrogant, stubborn . . . and ruggedly good-looking. Neither one is what the other would ever look for in a road trip partner, but the two of them set off together, on a voyage that makes sense only because it doesn’t. Along the way, they find small and sometimes surprising ways to ease their shared loss and honor Finn–but when shocking truths are revealed at the end of the road, will either of them be able to cope with the consequences?

Seventeen-year-old Parker Frost has never taken the road less traveled. Valedictorian and quintessential good girl, she’s about to graduate high school without ever having kissed her crush or broken the rules. So when fate drops a clue in her lap—one that might be the key to unraveling a town mystery—she decides to take a chance.

Julianna Farnetti and Shane Cruz are remembered as the golden couple of Summit Lakes High—perfect in every way, meant to be together forever. But Julianna’s journal tells a different story—one of doubts about Shane and a forbidden romance with an older, artistic guy. These are the secrets that were swept away with her the night that Shane’s jeep plunged into an icy river, leaving behind a grieving town and no bodies to bury.

Reading Julianna’s journal gives Parker the courage to start to really live—and it also gives her reasons to question what really happened the night of the accident. Armed with clues from the past, Parker enlists the help of her best friend, Kat, and Trevor, her longtime crush, to track down some leads. The mystery ends up taking Parker places that she never could have imagined. And she soon finds that taking the road less traveled makes all the difference.

Interview!

Nerd Girl: All of the characters in your novels have degrees of strengths and weaknesses and go through lessons and self-discovery. Was it important to you to represent these kind of characters in books for young people, especially as a mother?

Jessi: I think all of us, as people, no matter what age, gender, etc., have different degrees of strengths and weakness, and that these things shift and change as we go through, life, with all of its lessons and self-discovery. It’s extremely important to me that my characters reflect that, because that means they’ll read as genuine people, who are strong sometimes, and weak at others, but who are always growing, hopefully for the better. That’s the goal, anyway, both as a writer, and a mother – to portray those things that make us human.

Nerd Girl: Your most ‘recent’ novel, Golden, was published in May 2013. What can we expect from you in the future?

Jessi: I’m very excited about my next book, Things We Know By Heart, which comes out in Summer 2015. It’s about a girl named Quinn Sullivan, who lost her first love in an accident, and as a way to deal with her grief, she reaches out to the recipients of his donated organs. All of these people write her back, except the one she deems most important, which is, of course the one who received his heart.

Unable to let it go, she goes outside of the guidelines for privacy and finds out who he is. She tells herself she just needs to see who he is, see him living his life and then she can let it go, but when she goes to his small beach town and literally runs into him in a cafe, things get complicated fast. He’s completely fast. He’s completely taken with her, and no matter how much she tries to deny it, the pull of him is so strong that before she knows it, she’s falling for him too. The problem is, he has no idea who she is, and a relationship built on omissions and half-truths can only last so long before the truth comes out.

Nerd Girl: Have you always imagined yourself as an author, or did you have other career aspirations in the past?

Jessi: I’ve known since 3rd grade and my first Judy Blume book that I wanted to be a writer. I’ll never forget listening to her words, read by my teacher, and thinking “I want to do this. I want to make stories like Judy Blume.” I started writing then, and never stopped. But in high school, I had an English teacher (Mr Kenny, who is Mr Kinney in GOLDEN), who so inspired me that he got me thinking about teaching as well. I taught middle school and high school English for 5 years, and while trying to inspire these kids to go after their dreams, I ended up prodding myself to do so as well, and started writing Moonglass.

Nerd Girl: What made you want to write about teens instead of adults or children?

Jessi: Like I’ve heard many YA authors say, it wasn’t really a conscious decision. That’s just the way that my first story came out, and it’s the way they all have since then. For that, I feel lucky, because writing about teens is full of so much potential.

Nerd Girl: What are some important things that you strive for when writing your novels, knowing that teens are going to be reading them?

Jessi: I don’t think I treat teen readers any different than adult readers. I just try to tell a story where the characters read as genuine people, who, as you mentioned earlier, have strengths and weaknesses, make mistakes, fall down, pick themselves, grow as people. Those things are for all readers.

Nerd Girl: Have you ever had a fangirl moment and who was it with?

Jessi: I have, and of course it was with the one and only Judy Blume, who I met for a half second where instead of telling her everything that was on the tip of my tongue about how much she inspired me, and how I’ve loved all of her books ever since I can remember, I shook her hand, a friend took a picture of us, and it was over so fast I actually have to look back at the picture to believe it really happened!

Nerd Girl: Because this is for the Ontario Teen Book Fest, all about the teens, what is one of your favorite memories from when you were a teen?

Jessi: Senior prom night — the after party. Someone had rented a condo for the party, and just about everyone from our class was there — we had we had a tiny senior class. It was one of those nights where we all knew the end of the year was coming and everyone was friendly and nostalgic, and we danced all night then watched the sun rise from the roof — (almost) all of us. It was special. Like we could feel how much big chance was coming.

Nerd Girl: Last question: who is your fictional crush?

Jessi: Ooh, that’s a tough one. It has to be a tie — between Wes, from The Truth About Forever, and Dexter from This Lullaby. Dessen writes the best boys!

WhatANerdGirlSays Comic Con Wrap Up!

This past weekend was the San Diego Comic Con extravaganza in San Diego, recipe California. Comic Con has been going on for over forty years. I have gone before, cialis 40mg of course, and this year, I was unable to attend. I was really bummed at this for a very long time, but I was a bridesmaid in my best friend’s wedding, and honestly, it was an amazing time. I caught the bouquet and it was amazing, and I’m incredibly happy for her.

1011472_405412292912972_2128884030_n

But I know so many of you guys were unable to attend as well! So I wanted to gather as much news as I possibly could to share with you guys, who couldn’t go or may have been too busy to keep up, or just couldn’t keep up with the crazy amount of news that was coming our way this weekend.

Just a note: all articles linked will be from Hypable, which is one of my favorite sites to follow, and kept me SO updated during Comic Con.

So here we go:

Catching Fire Full Length Trailer is Released

We finally got our first full length trailer for the next installment of the Hunger Games movie! This movie will be hitting theaters in November. Cast members like Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Lenny Kravitz, Jena Malone and more were available during the panel and also for signings as well. They talked about different scenes they filmed and the various development of their characters.

Supernatural and Supernatural Spin-Off Series in the Works

url

I don’t know much about this show to be completely honest, because I’ve only watched the first couple seasons. From what I can tell, they talk a lot about the return of some characters, the idea of fallen angels, and the relationship between Dean and Sam. If you click the links above, you can find out way more information than I am able to share!

Details are in the bare minimum for the newly announced spin off show but apparently a new character will be introduced toward the end of the season that premieres on October 15th and the spin-off series will be based on this character.

The Marvel Panel Blows Everyone Away!

loki-comic-con-surprise-appearance

So Tom Hiddleston LITERALLY comes out, in FULL Loki costume, and milks it up, acting in his character for the entire couple minutes that he is up on stage. This was literally the only appearance he made so what an amazing rare treat that was. Of course, after, new footage of the Thor sequel was shown, the movie slated for a November release.

There was also cast appearances made for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and a full trailer shown. Hopefully we get the trailer VERY soon, because this is a movie I am definitely looking forward to.

The cast of Guardians of the Galaxy also made a SURPRISE appearance, where Karen Gillan of Doctor Who fame debuted her new hairstyle, and there was also a trailer.

Joss Whedon also came out and revealed the title of The Avengers sequel: The Avengers: Age of Ultron. He came out, showed an extremely short trailer that basically showed the Avengers reflected in the helmet of the villain, Ultron, and the title, and that was it. The film is set to release in May of 2015.

Surprise! Cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past Make an Appearance!

url

This is so exciting. I absolutely LOVED the first movie (its the only X-Men movie I own) and I haven’t heard much of what is going on for the second movie. A huge number of cast members made a surprise appearance at Comic Con, as well as director Bryan Singer. Appearances included: Jennifer Lawrence, Evan Peters, Peter Dinklage, Sean Ashmore, Nicholas Hoult, Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, and Ellen Page.

Peter Dinklage, of Game of Thrones fame, has confirmed that he will be paying Bolivar Trask in the movie.

You can watch the entire surprise panel, which I believe, includes the full length trailer. It is low res but its better than nothing!

Doctor Who and Matt Smith’s Last Appearance

url-1

So Matt Smith basically is emotional feels the entire Comic Con weekend as he says good bye to everyone, as he just announced recently that he is leaving the show. The main focus of Doctor Who at Comic Con was the seriously anticipated 50th Anniversary special, which will be featuring Matt as the 11th Doctor and Jenna Louise Coleman as the current companion, but also David Tennant as the 10th Doctor and Billie Piper returning as former companion, Rose Tyler. Steven Moffat was on board to tease like crazy, telling us that he’s been lying his ass off for months about the special and that we could all be presuming wrong. They showed a trailer for the special, which hasn’t been released to the public yet, that includes banter between the two doctors, comparisons between their sonic screwdrivers, Daleks and more.

The Vampire Diaries: Season 5

TVDComicCon

Nothing overly new was announced at this, but they talked about the stuff that happened in season four, and talked a little bit about season four, what they liked about what happened, how they are going to explain some of the stuff, how other things are going to work out. I know this is super vague but I glanced through it quickly because I haven’t finished season 4 yet! Paul Wesley says he’s enjoying being a little evil, they have a plan for Jeremy’s story and more.

The Originals: A Vampire Diaries Spin Off

url

I don’t want to say too much because this article has a TON of spoilers if you haven’t finished watching the previous season of The Vampire Diaries but they obviously talked a lot about how this show came about and what to expect from it. The show was really built from the love that Daniel, Joseph and Claire have garnered in their characters on TVD. There is going to be a lot going in this spin off show, including episodes of flashbacks in previous TVD episodes, but told from different points of views. Read more above for full details!

Once Upon a Time-Season 3

url

Several videos were shown during the Once Upon a Time panel, including a preview for Season 3 and a parody of Good Morning, America but instead, Good Morning, Storybrooke. The teaser trailer shows an interaction between Leroy (Grumpy) and what is presumed to be Ariel (SO exciting). I am SO excited about this show, especially with so many of the characters traveling to Neverland, and a spinoff show premiering as well. You can watch all the different videos at the link above!

Ginnifer Goodwin says that Snow is focusing on herself this season, finding a balance to the good and bad in her. Lana Parilla says Regina makes her favorite kill this season. A love triangle between Emma, Hook and Neil is HEAVILY hinted and we will see Peter, the Darlings, Neverland and Tinker Bell. They also discuss including a LGBT relationship, but doing it in a very real and genuine way!

Good news as well: there won’t be so much mish-mash episodes like last season. There will be 11 episodes, a midseason break and then 11 episodes. Thank goodness.

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland

Once-Upon-a-Time-in-Wonderland-Comic-Con

We learn more about the Once Upon a Time spin off show. We focus more on Alice, but in the adult version of the character that we have grown to know in the adaptations that have already been made. The show is more of a cousin to Once Upon a Time, and less of a spinoff show. They say for now, there won’t be crossovers, but they haven’t completely ruled it out. An announcement that was made was Naveen Andrews, of Lost fame, is going to play Jafar.

Divergent: Movie News and Book News!

"Divergent" Panel - Comic-Con International 2013

The cast and author, Veronica Roth, gathered to talk about the movie and the last book coming out in November. The film has just finished up, and will be releasing in March of 2014. They talked about favorite moments during filming and who has been signed on for part two, Insurgent, though they couldn’t say too much, due to spoilers. Veronica Roth also confirmed that Allegiant, the last book, will be told in due point of views, Tris and Four. They also showed the very first footage of the film to be shown, though this has NOT been posted online.

Straight from Hypable, a description of the footage shown: The extended clip began with Tris’ jump onto and from the train as a new Dauntless with her friend Christina, and then continuing to volunteer and jump off the roof into Dauntless headquarters. The clip also introduced Four helping Tris off of the net, and Tris’s selection of her new identity. The clip continued into a sizzle reel of Dauntless training, complete with impressive flips, gunfighting, and crowdsurfing. Other snippets included a shot of Tris taking the Faction test and receiving her tattoos, and a shot of Kate Winslet as Erudite leader, Jeanine. The reel ended with Four hurling his knives at Tris, the final knife leaving her with blood on her ear.

Superman and Batman Movie Crossover!

superman-batman-new-logo

It was announced by director, Zack Snyder, this weekend that a Batman and Superman crossover movie, entitled World’s Finest, was in the making. It is being said as a sequel to the recently released Man of Steel, and Henry Cavill will be back as Superman. No word on who would play Batman, but Christian Bale has already he will not play the Caped Crusader again. Not much else is known, though this is the official logo, but they are aiming for a 2015 release.

Joss Whedon and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Agents-of-Shield-ABC-premiere-date1

One of the most highly anticipated shows, Agents of SHIELD made a surprise premiere of the pilot episode of the show, which will premiere on September 24th. Joss Whedon and the other guests were a bit reluctant to reveal details but Hypable did have a chance to sit down with them, and you can read all about it, if you click the link above.

The Amazing Spiderman 2

url

The directors, and a few members of the cast including Andrew Garfield and Jamie Foxx, hit Comic Con and discussed some of the questions that have been lingering in fan’s minds about the sequel. Jamie discusses what he wanted to accomplish with his character, Electro, and they talked about the need for both Gwen, played by Emma Stone, and Mary Jane Watson, played by Shailene Woodley. Woodley says she won’t return for part 3, but the producers say “time will tell.” Andrew Garfield also talked about Peter’s relationship with Gwen, and the possibility of Spiderman being gay, and exploring his sexuality. Read more above, for some really amazing insights to the new movie. The movie comes out May 2nd, 2014.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Panel

url

Not much was revealed as far as the movie goes, with the release date only weeks away, but the cast discusses filming and playing their different characters and things like that. Jamie talked about the vulnerability of Jace and how Clary brings that out in him. Kevin mentions how they all sort embody their characters and Godfrey Gao confirmed this weekend that the Magnus and Alec kiss that occurs during the time of City of Bones, but was written as an outside story, will be in the film. Very exciting. Check out the entire panel.

Game of Thrones

url-2

The cast and author George R.R. Martin gathered to talk about the previous season, the nominations that were handed out to them for the Emmys and what we can expect in the future. They mostly talked about all the drama and tragedy that occurs at the end of the previous season, entitled the Red Wedding,w here basically all the characters die. Martin says killing all these characters really gives actors more opportunities to explore their characters more, and break boundaries. Emilia was surprised to find out she had garnered a nomination and the actor who played her on-screen husband came up on stage to congratulate her. They talked a little about Sam and Jon, and how their characters are, and their motivations. George also talked about the two remaining books in the series and the possibility of a prequel. If he makes it that far ;)

The Legend of Korra Season Two

korra-season-2-feature

Now, I just saw Michael DiMartino a few weeks ago, and he was so tight lipped about The Legend of Korra, season two, but now I realized they were waiting to reveal all of this at Comic Con. They showed the entire first episode of season two, and announced that the show would return in September and will be called “Book 2: Spirits”.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Cover Reveal!

harry-potter-half-blood-prince-new-cover

I wrote a couple weeks ago about the anniversary covers of Harry Potter, with new artwork done by Kazu Kabuishi. I showed you all the covers that had already been revealed and now we finally have book six! The books are being released on August 27th, in a paperback box set. The last cover, for Deathly Hallows, will be shown at a party in New York City, celebrating Harry Potter’s birthday (and Jo’s!) on July 31st. It is open to the public, so if you are a Potterhead, and in the area, head on over!

Ender’s Game

"Enders Game" And "Divergent" Panels - Comic-Con International 2013

New footage of Ender’s Game, a Comic Con exclusive, was shown at the convention, with appearances by the director, producer, Harrison Ford, Hailee Steinfeld, and Asa Butterfield. The trailer is mostly about Ender, of course, and his training, but apparently there are glimpses of other characters as well. The audience asked a lot of questions about the film, especially of Orson Scott Card, but those were deflected easily. There were also a lot of questions aimed at Harrison Ford about Star Wars and Indiana Jones but those were deflected as well, but that makes a lot of sense. The guy is SO ready to move on.

Sherlock Season Three!

url

Neither Benedict Cumberbatch nor Martin Freeman were able to attend Comic Con but they had recorded a video message for the fans in attendance. However, Steven Moffat and the other guests, like Mark Gatiss who plays Mycroft Holmes, made up for it. Moffat says that Sherlock’s “death” has already been hinted at in season two and that the John and Sherlock reunion was his favorite part to make. However John is NOT going to be happy with Sherlock, of course, but his anger will be resolved by the end of episode one; they don’t want to drag it out. Moriarty is actually dead, and we will see more of Mycroft and Sherlock’s relationship as well as the relationship (not romantic) between Molly and Sherlock. The stars have also signed on for season 4, but of course, no word on that.

Firefly Video Game!

url-1

Oh yes, you heard that right, Browncoats. There is officially going to be a Firefly video game, releasing in the Summer of 2014. It is called Firefly Online and will be available on Android and iOS devices. There is not much more information besides that, but if you click the link, you can watch the trailer and you can find out how to register on the website for official updates!

*     *     *

There was SO much more on Comic Con, and I’m sure I only covered a drop in the bucket of what I’m sure was an amazing weekend. I hope that this was still helpful for everyone who was unable to make it to the convention or able to keep up with the constant updates.

I just wanted to shout out to my friend Becky for trying to get me Divergent and Hunger Games swag, what a rock star you are for even trying! I want to do a HUGE shout out to my girl, Erin, from That One Geek Girl, for thinking of me this weekend and doing the most amazing thing in the world by getting me a personalized autograph by the flippin gorgeous Godfrey Gao himself. Yes, the sexy man playing Magnus Bane in City of Bones. You are amazing, Erin, and I love you! You are such an amazing friend.

Fandom Friday-Arrested Development

The Fandom Friday is a weekly feature, link with each blog post written by a new contributor.

This is the weekly post where either myself, or a guest blogger, talks about a new fandom. See, I’ve had the experience in my life where I’ve been made fun or put down about my particular fandoms. And that has made me feel pretty crappy. But I’ve also put down other fandoms as well.

So I’ve decided to change that. I’m opening my world up to new fandoms, and the best way to do that is to bring people in to write about various fandoms. I’m very excited about this segment.

If you guys are interested in becoming a guest blogger for the Fandom Friday, feel free to email me at whatanerdgirlsays at gmail.com or contact me HERE

*     *     *     *

This week’s Fandom Friday is brought to you by…ME. Again.

Come on guys, don’t be shy, come join the fun and be a guest blogger. Its so easy! And I’m tired of hearing myself talk all the time :P

Anyway, here’s this week’s Fandom Friday!

Arrested Development

urlArrested Development is a comedy TV show with four seasons. It originally aired back in 2003, and was cancelled after the finale of season 3 in 2006. It remained kind of a cult classic, in a way, with a huge cult following and still had a TON of fans. When it was released on Netflix, the fandom base for it only grew as more and more people were able to watch it. It became, much like Firefly or Freaks and Geeks, one of those shows that was cancelled way too soon.

Netflix responded to that, and created a fourth season, to be released only on Netflix, this past May of 2013, to show what the characters have been doing since the finale in 2006.

url-1

The show follows the Bluth family, a wealthy family in Orange County, California, who gets themselves into a little bit of trouble. Michael Bluth is ready to take over his father, George Sr’s company, The Bluth Company, and start to distance himself from his crazy family. His mom Lucille isn’t the affectionate type and is usually drunk by noon. His sister Lindsay is selfish and high maintenance. His brother in law Tobias is….very, very clueless. His brother Gob is a failed magician and his brother Buster is just straight up dumb. But just as Michael thinks he’s going to take over his company, his father is arrested for embezzlement, fraud, maybe even some “light treason”.

Okay, and the way I describe it, you’d think it sounds like a drama or something, but its not. Its straight up comedy. Michael is ready to take off to Arizona with his son, George Michael, to escape the ridiculousness that his family but after realizing that family is the most important thing (not breakfast), he decides to stay and do what he can to keep them together and to save the Bluth Company. The show follows all the hilarity that ensues from this and creates a seriously funny show.

url-2

The fourth season picks up a little later after the third season ends. Without spoiling it for you, the third season ends with about five million different things going on at once and you’re cracking up and you’re going “NO THIS CAN’T BE THE END!” The fourth season has 15 episodes, all of which debuted on Netflix on the same day. Each episode follows a different character in the series: Michael, Gob, George Sr., Lucille, Buster, etc. and it brings us an update on how the family has been doing since the chaos of the season finale of season three. I feel like a lot of the reviews I saw of this season were bad but I also saw a TON that were good as well and I thought it was absolutely hilarious.

Now the first time I watched it was with my boyfriend. My boyfriend is actually the WAY bigger AD fan, but he doesn’t want to guest write and he hates the word “fandom” haha so I’m writing it instead. The first time I watched the pilot episode of this show was with Jon, before we were even together. He was really excited to show, said I was going to love it and it was so funny. We watched the extended pilot together, and he’s cracking up the whole time and I remember sitting there, going, WHAT IS THIS? And not in a good way.

Because I didn’t understand the humor really. I didn’t really understand what the show was aiming for. I didn’t get it, definitely.

But Jon somehow persuaded me to keep watching, and as the show continued, I realized a lot of the humor came from inside jokes within the show, references to other episodes and just references to pop culture in general, and when I finally understood the show, and the humor, I couldn’t stop laughing.

This show is one of the funniest shows out there. There aren’t a lot of shows that make me literally laugh out loud, and there aren’t a lot of shows that I memorize quotes from (Doctor Who, of course). The amount of jokes, and inside jokes and stupid jokes and racist (in good taste, of course) jokes and stereotype jokes and jokes jokes jokes are just too much to handle. All of the characters are supposed to be as dumb as they are or clueless or selfish or whatever and you love them for it.

You love how clueless Tobias is, and the amount of sexual innuendos he manages to include in EVERY SINGLE CONVERSATION. You love Lindsay and her blatant attempts to get laid and how they just NEVER work. You love that George Michael is totally in love with his cousin and is just the most awkward teenager I have ever seen in my entire life. Gob is one of the stupidest human beings I’ve ever met in my life but he’s lovable and his magic tricks are fantastic, and its Will Arnett and that guy is awesome.

I think one of the BEST things about the show is all the inside jokes, and one liners you get from it. I feel like I can quote Arrested Development randomly, more than I can quote a lot of things. They just have all these funny one-liners and all these one-liners that you can quote to an AD fan and they’ll start cracking up but if I tell you, you just won’t get it, like “there’s always money in the banana stand” or “no touching” or “I’ve made a huge mistake”. I love all the little lines that come out of the show. Each line they saw is pure comedic gold, and causes you to crack up.

Its one of my favorite shows.

Which definitely means you should watch it.

Seriously. All FOUR seasons are Netflix and you will bust through them so fast. This is hugely popular, a cult favorite, and it was a favorite enough for Netflix to buy the rights to it and create a whole new season 7 years later. If that doesn’t show you how amazing this show is, I don’t know what will. And any show that puts out a banana stand or stair car (watch the show, seriously) and creates huge lines for it, that’s a show well worth watching!

Free frozen bananas at the banana stand? Love it.

The Stair Car at the Grove in Los Angeles. You get a little bit of stares with this one.

*     *     *

Seriously, this is a show people are missing out on and they shouldn’t be. I quote this all the time and people stare at me, and I’m like, “Look, if you just watch Arrested Development, this wouldn’t be a problem!” Because its a seriously funny show and its one that I think is very underrated and shouldn’t have been cancelled with it was. But it being cancelled kind of helped to push it back up, and gain more fans, much like what happened with Joss Whedon’s Firefly. So hit up Netflix (I know you have Netflix), and definitely try out this show.

And if the humor doesn’t catch you right away, like it did with me, give it a few more episodes and you’ll start cracking up soon enough :)

Exclusive Interview with Eoin Colfer at the Mission Viejo Library!

This past weekend, sick after spending all day Saturday at the super epic Ontario Teen Book Fest, prescription I got another super great opportunity through the Mission Viejo Library (You rock, Allison!) and was able to score an interview with best-selling author, Eoin Colfer, author of books like The Supernaturalist, The Wish List, and most notably, the Artemis Fowl series.

His most recent release, The Reluctant Assassin, is the first of a planned trilogy called Warp. According to Eoin, the books involve time travel (where he got inspiration from Back to the Future and Doctor Who!) and is supposed to scare the pants off of you!

Eoin was a super fun and HILARIOUS guy! I enjoyed interviewing him and I enjoyed his presentation. He was SO funny. I had no idea I would attending a comedy show. He told stories about his friends and family, his sons, and his writing processes and its just absolutely hilarious. I have met a ton of authors, especially in the last few months, but he was so incredibly funny and he won’t be one that I’ll forget.

He also wrote on my “writing advice” poster. Check it out! SO funny.

It says “Get rid of boring friends!” for those who may not be able to read his awesome handwriting haha.

He was an absolutely delight to interview :) Check out the interview below!

Me: Okay so you first published Artemis Fowl in 2001. How does it feel that these novels are still successful and that you keep gaining new fans?

Eoin: I think its great. I never wrote it with that in mind. When I started to write Artemis, it was kind of aimed at reluctant boys who wouldn’t read, boys in my class, what I thought they would like. (Eoin Colfer used to be a teacher). So I wasn’t expecting it to go global. It’s a great feeling. Its very hard to connect with it when you’re living in a small town in Ireland, when millions of kids read your books.

Me: I first read your books when I was about 13 and I’m 25 now.

Eoin: That’s awesome.

Me: They definitely keep going, with the fans.

Eoin: I met a kid last year that was like ‘You’re a classic!’ I was like, no, classics are old and possibly dead. I’m alive…and its a really nice feeling.

Me: That’s awesome. This is a fan question, I’ve actually had a couple people ask me to ask you this. They said, The Supernaturalist came out quite a few years ago. Is there going to be a sequel?

Eoin: Um, maybe, I haven’t decided yet. I haven’t decided if to do a sequel but I haven’t started planning one. I do have a little one paragraph of where its going to go if I do go back to that. That’s the book I do get asked about the most, is there going to be a sequel to this? So I think maybe I will.

Me: I hope so

Eoin: But maybe I won’t (laughs).

Me: (laughs) All right. What made you want to write science fiction and fantasy books?

Eoin: They were the books that I really loved when I was a teenager and even younger, this was in the 1970s. Back in the 1970s, it was a big boom in science fiction and fantasy. Star Wars was made and it was great. And the first Star Trek movie was made and it was great and even a cartoon of the Lord of the Rings was made and it wasn’t so great. And then there was the Planet of the Apes movies and I loved those. So when I was a kid, that was the youth culture. And its faded out a bit but not for me. Its come back into fashion just at the right time and all these great movies are being made and great books are being written. So its a great time to be a reader.

Sara: Yeah, it really is. What are some of your favorite authors to read, and who inspires you?

Eoin: The guy who inspires me the most I think is a guy called William Goldman and he has written movies and screenplays all his life. He wrote movies like the Sting and All the President’s Men and he wrote books like Marathon Man, which is one of my favorites, and The Princess Bride, which is my favorite kid’s book.

Me: Right, I’ve totally read that! Its a great book!

Eoin: So, he would be the guy…What I like about him is that he doesn’t just stick in one genre, he does everything. You know,  I’d like to eventually do that as well. I know I’ve just done eight books in one genre which is sort of, which is a bit boring. Not boring for me or the readers but you want to move onto something else. You have to do other books, like crime or whatever.

Me: That’s awesome. My last question is, what advice do you have to aspiring young writers?

Eoin: If you are an aspiring writer, it starts off fantastically because you’re full of hope, you’re writing new stories, everyone in your family is telling you that they’re the best stories ever and you think ‘Wow, I’m on my way’. And then sometimes, when it doesn’t happen for four or five years, you can go through a bad time thinking, ‘maybe I’m not a writer’. But almost every writer  who has been published has had those bad years, where they doubted themselves.

And the ones that do get published, are the ones that don’t go by the wayside, during that period. You gotta know that its going to be a few years here  and I’m not going to get published and I’m going to have to push through those few years. And of course, there are some writers who are so brilliant they get published immediately, but that is rare, rare, rare. So any writer will say they were reject. J.K. Rowling, Stephen King, everybody.

So the writers who persist are the ones that get published.

After I had the interview with him, was his actual presentation. He was super super super funny, and my brother and sister, who are both SUPER big fans, really had a great time. He had a magician named Travis before and after the presentation and because I was the blogger, I got to be the lucky one who participated in the magic show. Where, you know, I nearly got my hand chopped off!

But it was a good time. I had a great time. And I was incredibly honored to be able to interview him. He is a best-selling author and kids love him. I remember kids loving his books when I was a kid and being in that room at Mission Viejo Library, where he was surrounded by kids again, that’s powerful, that’s magic. Because he continues to gain new fans, new readers and it takes a talented writer to do that. Artemis Fowl came out in 2001 and he continues to enjoy success and I think that’s a wonderful thing.

My sister, Jessica, and brother, Stevey, waiting for Eoin.

I’ve also seen two of my siblings become readers from his books, and so it was really awesome being able to see how excited they were to meet him and see him. I’m sure they felt the way I felt while meeting Meg Cabot, Sarah Dessen, Cassandra Clare and the others. And I am so behind any author that is encouraging people to read and introducing kids to the love of reading. This is added to the fact that he seems SO good to his fans. He has a family, a wife, some kids, but he keeps on writing and touring. Coming to California from Ireland? Not exactly a short trip but he’s personable and he talks straight to the kids and makes them laugh and he’s the type of author that you meet and you know there’s no way you’ll ever forget meeting him, no way.

Eoin Colfer and I at the Library. I don’t know if he’ll ever see this but thank you Eoin for the interview, for making me laugh like crazy, for taking place in an iFandoms Collide vlog and for just being all out awesome! I appreciate and love authors who reach out to their fans, and are accessible to their fans and you were awesome. I’m definitely going to give Warp a chance!

And I’m glad you thought the interview was cool :)

Hope you guys enjoyed my interview with Eoin Colfer. Definitely read his books, if you haven’t had the chance to read them before. They are children’s books but they are much like Percy Jackson, and enjoyable for all ages. And the Reluctant Assassin sounds super cool. I’m definitely going to be reading it.

Also big big big thanks to Allison Tran at the Mission Viejo Library. I’ve said before, and I’ll say it again, you rock! You are a dedicated librarian with such passion for what you do and it comes across. You and Alex (from A Whale of a Tale Bookstore) always put on such wonderful events, events where a reader can enjoy themselves because we know that you are enjoying it as well. Thanks for giving me this AWESOME opportunity to interview this epic, epic author!

Divergent #3 Gets a Title and More Veronica Roth News!

51nWpbOBAeL._SY300_

For what feels like forever, see Divergent fans have been staring at this cover when heading to Amazon to preorder the last installment in Veronica Roth’s Divergent trilogy.

And today she announced that she had BIG news coming for tomorrow. And since its already tomorrow on the East coast (though its not quite tomorrow here in California), she released her BIG news.

The final installment finally has a title!

And the title is:

Allegiant!

Now the official dictionary definition (according to dictionary.com anyway), this means: loyal, faithful.

I think this hints at SO much that could possibly coming in the last novel, especially with the immense cliffhanger that Veronica left us with in Insurgent.

I like it :) Its not what I expected. I think Veronica and the fandom have been joking for ages that the title would be Detergent that we kind of accepted it. It had also been hinted very heavily that the title could be Convergent. But this is what we got and I really like it. Its consistent with the previous titles but just slightly different.

Allegiant will be released on October 22nd, 2013. No word yet on when the cover will be revealed but hopefully soon!

What do you guys think?

One more reminder: Veronica Roth will be appearing at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books this Saturday, the 20th, with Lauren Oliver at 4 pm. Tickets for her particular panel are already sold out (they were the first panel to sell out!) but you can still come and get autographs, at the session immediately after the panel (roughly around 5 pm). I will be there and I hope to see you guys there!

Also for those who haven’t heard, Divergent has officially started filming this week in Chicago. So exciting! Pictures were taken of the cast out on the town, but no pictures yet of filming. Can’t wait to see. Divergent will hit theaters next March!
