Tuesday Top Ten-Top Fictional Families

So I gotta give credit where credit is due: my dad totally came up with this week’s Tuesday Top Ten, prescription again. I am seriously running out of ideas. Well, mind I guess that’s not true. I always have ideas but they are usually book related. I am trying to do my best to expand myself into movies and TV shows and all of that, and the best way to start is through the Tuesday Top Ten.

So here ya go everyone. Here is the Tuesday Top Ten, where I share all the fictional families that I think it’d be pretty cool to be a part of!

10. The Bennetts-Pride and Prejudice

bennet-family

Okay, there’s a huge part of me that’s like, do I really want to have FIVE sisters? I already have two sisters who, yes I love, but they drive me absolutely bonkers! We fight over clothes and make-up and who gets time in the bathroom and all kinds of fun stuff like that. Do I really want to deal with Jane, Elizabeth, Lydia, Mary and Kitty Bennett? And the answer to that question is: HELL YES! I LOVE the Bennett family, I absolutely adore them! I love that no matter how crazy life gets, and it gets CRAZY, they love each other so much. Jane and Elizabeth are really the only normal ones. Lydia and Kitty are just silly as hell, and fairly stupid at times too, Mary is a serious introvert, Mr. Bennett is social awkward and Mrs. Bennett is just NUTS. But they make for a realistic and fun family, and it all ends happily in the end and I just absolutely adore them. I’d be a Bennett, for sure!

9. The McFlys-Back to the Future

tumblr_lh6a2i42xc1qgl8g0o1_500

I’m not going to lie, there is a HUGE part of me that wants to be part of the McFlys because their last name is seriously cool. I have no idea why I think that, but I would totally be down to be Sara McFly. And maybe if I was a McFly, my cool older brother Marty would totally take me on cool time traveling adventures, and I’d totally get to see him save our parents marriage, and make it THAT much better. I don’t know, I just always liked how they were a loving family, and that even though Marty going back in time changed some stuff, they still remained a super loving family, and I love how at the end, George Sr is a badass dad, and Lorraine is super hot mom, and for some reason, Marty’s brother works in an office but still lives at home, and its just awesome.

8. The Stark Family-The Song of Ice and Fire

stark-family

Okay, this is totally not the best family in the world to want to be part of. For one thing, pretty much everyone in this family either dies or gets into a seriously precarious situation. Also, if I was a Stark, I couldn’t really make out with Jon Snow, because even though he’s a bastard, he’s still technically your brother by blood. Sigh. But seriously, I love fantasy novels like this, and I think the idea of living in a castle, with holdings and both learning to be a lady and learning to use various weapons would be awesome. I think the Starks are a great family, you know, before everything goes to hell. I think they all love each other, and they support each other, and they have such good values, and I think Ned and Cat take care of their children. And okay, all the Starks, including the unofficial one, Jon Snow, get these super awesome direwolves! I want a direwolf! They are so cute when they’re little pups and they grow up and they are connected with each kid, like Ghost is to Jon. I just love it. I can’t handle it. I would be  a Stark.

7. The Bluth Family-Arrested Development

Bluth_Family_white

I seriously thought about saying, look at this amazing family portrait. Really, this picture says it all. But I’ll write a little more because that’s unfair. I love the show, Arrested Development (thanks baby!) and I love that theme boils down to family, family, family but its done in SUCH a hilarious way. There is hardly a moment while you are watching this show and watching this family interact that you don’t laugh. They are literally the most ridiculous family to ever exist. The criminal father. The drunk mother. The kind of stupid magician brother. The naive, shopaholic sister. The even more naive, probably gay brother-in-law. The cousins in love. Its just a laugh factory the entire ride, and its never a dull moment. I swear that’s why Michael Bluth sticks around, just to be a part of the hilarity of his family.

6. The Baggins-The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings

frodo-baggit

I want to be a Hobbit! I’m already short as it is, and okay, I don’t have hairy feet because that’s just gross but I would make a seriously awesome Hobbit. I love to eat and I love to have a good time, and I would seriously love to go on adventures like Bilbo and Frodo do. I have the adventurous spirit in me, which means I’m already fit to be a Baggins. I mean, obviously, the Baggins have the BEST life, or at least these two do. And okay, Frodo has the most ridiculous burden as the Ringbearer and its not easy, and Bilbo almost gets killed by pretty much every creature possible in Middle Earth while helping Thorin and company, but come on, ADVENTURE! Plus, they have super cool friends (Thorin, the dwarfs, Gandalf, Merry, Pippin, Sam, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli…) and they live in little hobbit holes. I seriously think hobbit holes are one of the COOLEST houses to exist in fictional world. No lie. I want one. I would love to live at Bag End.

5. The Skywalkers-Star Wars Saga

The-Skywalkers-the-skywalker-family-33851372-600-825

I couldn’t find a good picture of the Skywalkers, because let’s face it, they aren’t exactly the happiest family in the world and then I found this picture, couldn’t stop laughing and voila! There ya go! I don’t think I’d want to be really part of the family that is here, but I would like to be a Skywalker. Look, they are seriously badass and powerful, and they are capable of so much. Anakin/Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker are both trained late as Jedis and are incredibly powerful as Jedis. And my girl, my best girl, Princess Leia, who I wanted to be for so much of my life, is a Skywalker, and if you’ve read the books, she gets even MORE awesome. If you were going to be a Jedi Knight, and be part of that world, the Skywalkers are TOTALLY the way to go. Plus their last name is also really awesome too. Sara Skywalker :) I like the ring to it.

4. The O’Haras-Gone with the Wind

carreen plaid movie

I am so down to be an O’Hara, mostly because I totally want Scarlett as a sister and Gerald as a dad. I love both of them because of the Irish streak to their nature. While Ellen, Suellen and Careen all stick to being good Southern ladies, the honor and pageantry of the South doesn’t quite time the fiery father and daughter and I love that. They are my two favorite characters in the novel, plus Rhett Butler. I love that they try to blend in, and they manage to be a part of it but they aren’t ever full integrated into that lifestyle. They’re all ambitious and fiery and wonderful. Plus they live at Tara, which is so beautiful, too beautiful for anyone to handle, and I love those dresses. Scarlett’s dress at the Twelve Oaks barbecue…I love it so much. I would love to be part of that family to be part of that Southern culture, and to wear those pretty dresses, and go to parties where you could dance and all of that. I love it.

3. The One-Hundred Acre Woods Family-Winnie the Pooh

2

Winnie the Pooh is one of the most amazing animated features ever. I have a ridiculous obsession with Winnie the Pooh and I would seriously love to live in the 100 Hundred Acre Woods, where I could have adventures with the awesome stuffed animals that live there. I would feel bad for Christopher Robin though, because no lie, I would so try to replace him. I would be like, these animals love more now Christopher, what you going to do about that?

Wow, I’m kind of evil. But seriously, I loved these movies as a kid and I super love them now, and I loved the new movie they released in 2011, and I would love to have Winnie the Pooh in my life. I know they aren’t a technical family but they are :) They love and support one another, and put up with each other’s flaws and come on, Winnie the Pooh is awesome. His lack of a big brain makes for some silly and lovable moments. I want my own little Pooh Bear.

2. The Lightwoods-The Mortal Instruments/The Infernal Devices

tumblr_mnw5trxATL1rgbg31o1_500

The only problem with being part of the Lightwood family would be that I couldn’t date Alec or Isabelle. But then I couldn’t do that anyway because Izzy is perfect with Simon and Alec is gay. And I can still have Jace…even though I think of him as a Lightwood, too. Well, damn. Haha. I want to be a Lightwood because I think they are the MOST badass family in the Shadowhunter world. Gabriel and Gideon Lightwood in the Infernal Devices and Maryse, Max (cries), Alec, Isabelle, Jace…they are all such badass Shadowhunters and I want to be part of that family. Plus there symbol is fire (still working on getting a Lightwood ring from Vivi Hebel’s Hebel Designs!) I want to be a Shadowhunter so badly and I admire all the Lightwoods so much so if there was a Shadowhunter family that I’d be a part of, it would be the Lightwoods. The Herondales are a close second but always, always the Lightwoods. Then I could live in the New York Institute :)

1. The Weasleys-Harry Potter series

weasleys-harry-potter-9922787-1024-576

My dad and brother say that I’m totally biased in my Top Ten Lists because I usually choose Harry Potter in some form for number one. Well, Harry Potter is my number one fandom, easily. There’s a reason why I have four tattoos. So of course they’re going to end up in the number one spot most of the time. And here’s the thing. I love the Weasleys. I love that they love each other and they are so close, and they do so much together, and for each other. But I think it just reminds me of my own family. No matter how much money the family has, and like the Weasleys, we’ve never had a lot, they are still able to be so happy together. Sure, money can be a sore issue but they have each other and they have crazy adventures and they drive each other insane, and basically sleep on top of each other, and its just awesome. Its my family; we only have one less kid than the Weasleys. Plus, if I was a Weasley, I would be able to live in the Burrow, which is the coolest house in the world.

Tuesday Top Ten-Favorite Romance Movies

Happy Tuesday everyone! Hope you all are having great weeks so far. I know that there are many of you gearing up for San Diego Comic Con this weekend (so jealous!) and I am so excited for you guys. My best friend is getting MARRIED this Friday, sale which is just too crazy to even believe, doctor and I am so excited! I am in the wedding too, doctor along with my boyfriend, so it should be a seriously fun time!

And since there is so much romance in the air this week, at least for me, I decided to make this week’s Tuesday Top Ten with a little bit of romance. That and my dad said he’s tired of all the book top tens haha!

So here it is: my ten personal favorite movies with the best romances in them!

10. Dirty Dancing

url

Come on! “Nobody puts Baby in the Corner”! One of my absolute favorite lines EVER. Francis, also known as “Baby”, goes to a swanky little country club type resort, where she runs into the bad boy with a heart of gold, Johnny. When Johnny’s dancing partner is under the weather (an illegal abortion), Baby steps in to take her place and summer love ensues, despite the differences in social classes. Its so cheesy, and ridiculous and one of those movies that gets over played over the years but I can’t…I love the dancing and the silliness of Jennifer Grey and the sexiness of Patrick Swayze, and the whole story of it. I am addicted to those kind of movies with music and dancing, and this has both of them. You really don’t get better than that.

9. Pride and Prejudice

url-1

Pride and Prejudice is one of the BEST romantic books ever to exist in the history of literature so it would only make sense that it would be one of my favorite movies. I know most people would mention the Colin Firth adaptation of the movie, and while I definitely enjoy that one, I was thoroughly impressed by the Keira Knightley one. I have watched that one so much, I could probably quote it, and I really enjoyed that they quote the book quite often at times. I think Keira makes a really good Elizabeth Bennet and the guy who plays Mr. Darcy whose name escapes me at this time is so hot and believable as Mr. Darcy. The story of two people who absolutely loathe each other falling in love is just so addicting and you’re cheering and blushing and jumping up and down when they both finally realize and they have that moment where you just know they are going to live happily ever after. The character of Mr. Darcy is especially my favorite too because he accepts his attractive WAY before Lizzie and you just watch him struggle with it, and agh, its just so GOOD.

8. Titanic

url-2

I don’t care what anyone says, I know this movie is cheesy and dramatic but it has been one of my favorite movies since I first saw it when I was 9 years old. One, I’ve always been ridiculously obsessed with the Titanic. I know, that’s kind of a morbid obsession to have but its true. I read every book, every article, watched movies and documentaries and all of that. I was obsessed with it. I wanted to write a novel set on the Titanic for a long time but I felt like I was just writing a rewrite of this movie. Granted I was thirteen when I was attempting this. I really wanted to try again but we’ll see. I do love the love story of the movie, rich and unattainable Rose, wanting to break out of her restrictive world, falling in love with the exciting but poor, Jack. You don’t get any cheesier than that. But I love the background of the Titanic and the history that they weaved into it. Of course, a lot of the history is exaggerated and embellished but still. I love this movie. I will watch it every time it comes on TV, even if it takes me five hours.

7. Sixteen Candles

url-3

You know what I remember every time I think of this movie? I think of me and my parents getting in trouble because we watched this movie at my very first sleepover, when I was ten years old, and apparently it was rated R and yeah, my friends’ parents were all so pissed off. I don’t even know; apparently its Rated R because whats-her-face is naked in the beginning of the movie, in the locker room. Whatever. Anyway, this is the best teen movie ever made, and I loved that Jake Ryan (oh Jake Ryan) is totally smitten with dorky but super pretty Samantha Baker. The hilarity that ensues and the amount of actors in that movie that go on to do bigger things like Joan and John Cusack and Anthony Michael Hall, its just all great. I love that they are so many one-liners in that movie. I quoted this movie on a daily basis when I was about sixteen years old and it still remains one of my favorites :)

6. The Princess Bride

url-4

The funniest, romantic movie that I have ever watched in my life. I watched this movie when I was a kid and it still remains a favorite. I finally got it on Blu-Ray this past Christmas (thanks dad!) and I’ve watched it so many times. This is actually, also, one of those few instances where I’ll say that the movie was better than book. I know, I know. The book WAS great, I’m not going to lie but this movie is just such a classic. I love the ridiculous fantasy element of it, and the hilarity of it, and all the actors that are in it. I like it because its a beautiful romance story but with the added awesome of humor, and action and all of that. Its a great movie for kids. Its got that fairy tale, the one we are all so familiar with because of Cinderella and Snow White or whatever, but with a twist. This is also a movie I tend to quote a ridiculous amount of times.

5. The Apartment

url-5

I LOVE this movie. I watched this movie for the first time with Jon and it took us MONTHS to do it. We would always start watching it really late at night, and its a fairly long movie, and we’d always fall asleep. Not to say that its a boring movie, because it DEFINITELY is not. Its sweet, funny, and one of those romances that’s all about the build up. You don’t need overly sweet lines and over-the-top make out scenes to create a romance. The simple exchanges between John Lemmon as Baxter and Shirley MacClaine as Fran creates the brilliant romance between them, especially when Fran is staying in Baxter’s infamous apartment. The ridiculousness of all the managers taking their mistresses to Baxter’s apartment, and the way he really wins in the end, its so beautiful. Its such a classic and awesome movie. It won five Oscars for a reason, for many reasons. And Shirley MacClaine was such a beautiful woman, and a talented actress and John Lemmon was a comedic genius. Sigh.

4. Wall.E

url-6

This is one of the most beautiful love stories that I have ever seen in a movie and its between two robots that barely say anything else besides their own names. Wall.E and EVE are ROBOTS for goodness sake, and yeah the movie is ultimately about the earth, and not abandoning it and taking care of it, and it does get a little preachy but I love that. But in between all that, is the beautiful love story of two robots, two very different robots who band together on a single mission and as this goes on, they fall in love. Its just such a beautiful thing. I think the simplicity of it is what makes me love it so much. And sure, the fact that its a movie my boyfriend and I both enjoy thoroughly does have something to do with it. We had been together…five months and he had come home from a tour with his band, and he was so incredibly tired, but he really wanted to see this movie with me. And we’ve seen every Pixar movie (excluding Cars 2) on the day its come out, as a tradition. So it sort of has an outside romantic connection as well.

3. Howl’s Moving Castle

url-7

Before Howl’s Moving Castle, my experience with anime was very limited to basically Pokemon. My sister loved it, and I kind of scoffed at it. But for my sister’s 8th grade graduation, I believe, in 2005, I went with her and my mom to go see this movie in the theaters and I was blown away by this truly amazing movie. I basically went home and ate up all of the Studio Ghibli movies, which are all so fantastic. And my quiet love for anime grew from there. But Howl’s Moving Castle…its not just one of my favorite romance movies, or my favorite animated movies, its one of my favorite MOVIES, period, of all time. I love the fantasy aspect of it, with the moving castle and the wizards and different airships and all that. I love the simple romance of it, between Howl and Sophie, the build up of it, to the moment when they finally can admit it to each other and to themselves. Its such a beautiful story, and such a beautiful movie. Hayao Miyazaki makes amazing movies. When I first showed this to my boyfriend, I was so afraid of him not liking it but he loves it and it is another movie that I am so happy we get to enjoy together. Also Christian Bale as Howl? Josh Hutcherson as Markl? My nerd heart loves it.

2. Up

Up_Poster

I know, technically this is NOT a romance movie, since most of the movie is about the adventure that Carl and Russell have together to get the house to Paradise Falls. But I consider it in my top ten because this movie told one of the most beautiful, most heartwarming and heartbreaking love stories in a matter of minutes. The “Married Life” scene in the beginning of the movie, where you see Carl and Ellie meet for the first time, and become friends, and then marry and live their life together? I’m getting teary eyed just THINKING about it. Its exactly what a love story SHOULD be. Its exactly how a life with someone you love should be. It should be about this lasting love, a friendship that is strong, where you’re able to go on adventures, but also do simple things like clean the house and read together and still be so incredibly happy. Carl spends so much time in regret for not giving Ellie the adventures that she’s always wanted but in the end, her life with him was the best adventure she could have. How does that not make you tear up? That is just too beautiful for words and its the reason its one of my favorite movies, the reason that Jon and I have seen it so many times that we could quote it on a daily basis (and do!) and why its so high on this list.

1. Gone with the Wind

url-8

I can’t even remember how old I was when I first watched this movie but it is such an important part of my childhood. My mom is a huge fan of the book and the movie, as well as her two sisters, and it was a huge part of my life. I first read the book when I was thirteen years old, all 1000+ pages, which was a hefty read for a girl that young. But I remember this movie, and continue to as one of the best love stories ever told because it is a love story that goes so terribly wrong, and gets so insanely messed up and isn’t that the truth? Scarlett O’Hara knows what she wants but what she wants is what is so precisely wrong for her. The man that was made for her, that will love her for her strengths and her flaws, for her attitude and her selfishness and her ambition and determination is Rhett Butler and she screws it up so badly. She makes all the wrong decisions and all the wrong moves and in the end, she is left alone, without the man she loves, because she has realized it way too late. She is heartbroken and you are heartbroken and you’re grabbing a pint of Cherry Garcia and you want to hand it through the television to Scarlett with a box of tissues while you yell at her, through your sobbing, for being so incredibly stupid and blind. It is also one of the most amazing movies ever made and remains the highest grossing movie of all time, when adjusted for inflation.

Tuesday Top Ten-Belated Father’s Day Edition

Okay, visit so I logged into WordPress today to start writing the Tuesday Top Ten, sildenafil and whoa, its all different. Not hugely different, just vamped up a little bit. So I am momentarily distracted by the new prettiness that is my dashboard…its just so shiny and new…

Okay, sorry.

Moving on, today’s Tuesday Top Ten is a little special. Last month, when it was Mother’s Day, my dear friend Gabby from iFandoms Collide went to an author event where Alyson Noel, Tahereh Mafi, Marie Lu, Kami Garcia, Ransom Riggs, and Margaret Stohl were and asked them who their favorite fictional mothers are. Of course, myself, Tatiana, Gabby, Megan and Sylvia had to jump in and say who our own fave fictional mothers were.

This month was a little different, and we weren’t able to do that again, so I decided that we do a special Father’s Day edition of The Tuesday Top Ten, and I would tell you all my own favorite fictional fathers.

So here we go :)

Oh, can I just say? Its actually really hard to pick fictional dads. Why is it most fictional dads are super evil, or dead? I don’t understand it…

Anyway.

MY FAVORITE FICTIONAL DADS!

10. Darth Vader from Star Wars

url

I know, I know, this is kind of a weird father to pick because he wasn’t really a good father. He totally tortures Princess Leia in the first movie, and repeatedly tries to kill Luke, his son. I mean, he is NOT fatherly material in the slightest. But he’s kind of a badass, and in the end, he did what was right. Granted it was too late for him, and he wasn’t able to have an actual bonding relationship with either of his children but hey, he killed Emperor Palpatine and saved Luke’s life. So that, in itself, is enough for me. I just wouldn’t be buying him “Dad of the Year” mugs any time soon.

9. Mufasa from The Lion King

Mufasa and Simba Toon

Mufasa! James Earl Jones, man. He plays some badass dads. Mufasa is an AWESOME dad. He’s the KING of Pride Rock. Mufasa runs around, saving Simba when he does stupid things and he’s brave and wise and he’s just freaking awesome. Its like, when the hyenas say “Mufasa” and shudder in excitement haha. That’s exactly what it is. Mufasa is the kind of dad, had he lived (and don’t lie, you cry every single time that he dies in the movie) would have been that awesome dad that made sure Simba grew up strong and proud and wise. He would have taught all the lessons that were necessary for Simba to be a great king. Which I believe he would have been anyway but Mufasa, man, Mufasa is awesome.

8. Mr. Bennett from Pride and Prejudice

url-1

Seriously, the reason Mr. Bennett is here is because anyone that can have FIVE daughters in that time period is a brave, brave, special man. Add in the fact that he is married to the kind of cuckoo (but lovable!) Mrs. Bennett and he’s just an amazing man. He’s a man of very modest means and has not much to offer a man in pursuit of his daughters. However, if he doesn’t marry them off, he faces their future, when he dies, because they cannot inherit his house. He takes everything in stride and does what he can to do well by his daughters and he supports them with every fiber of his being. And he’s so funny. He cracks me up, as he deals with his crazy wife and his five, very different daughters and their every day dramatics. What a brave, brave man.

7. Luke Garroway from The Mortal Instruments

url-2

Okay, technically Luke isn’t a real dad, but he might as well be. He has been Clary’s stand-in dad her entire life, raising her while she thought her dad was dead (though all us TMI fans know the truth), and he loves her as if she were his own. Everything he does, in the entire series, is to protect her and he treats her as an adult, values her opinions and recognizes her abilities and does what he can to help her and to support her. He’s an amazing dad, and is the most honest he can possibly be with her. Once he saves her from Hodge and she demands answers from him, he sits her down and tells her everything, everything that is true as he knows it. He is one of those dads that steps up to be a dad, even though he doesn’t have to. Clary isn’t his daughter but he wants Clary to be and he does all the work that any dad would do. I LOVE Luke. He’s one of my favorite characters in that series.

6. Philippe Renaldo from The Princess Diaries

url-3

Yeah, so in the book? Mia’s dad? He’s not dead haha. He’s not dead like he is in the movies. And in the books, he is absolutely, positively hilarious. He’s stricken with cancer, testicular cancer, and this leaves him unable to have anymore children, which is when Mia finds out she’s a princess, because she is now the heir to Genovia, albeit an illegitimate heir haha. This leaves Prince Philippe a little down in the dumps and he’s isn’t the most attractive man in the world haha. But he’s a prince and he loves finding beautiful weather reports or news reporters or Victoria’s Secret models to be his “friend” for a week or two. And he’s just one of those dads that is so good to their daughter, so support, and loving, but so absolutely clueless. Some of the conversations between Mia and her dad have literally made me laugh until I cry because they’re just so CLASSIC. But at the end of the day, Prince Philippe is a great dad and does a great job, co-raising Mia with her mother and turning her into a perfect princess.

5. Marlin from Finding Nemo

url-4

I LOVE THIS MOVIE and I don’t get to watch it enough because my boyfriend isn’t the biggest fan in the world. But anyway, Marlin is a badass dad. He literally crosses oceans, battles sharks and deals with jellyfish and crazy deep water fish and turtles and all of that just to find his son, Nemo. He does EVERYTHING he possibly can to get his son back. And sure, in the beginning he’s a little too protective but he just loves his son and wants him to be as safe and happy as possible. And his journey across the oceans of Australia taught both him and Nemo lessons and they have even stronger bonds as father and son, and its a wonderful father/son story. This is a kid’s movie but you really see the development of Marlin’s character as he loosens his grip on his son and becomes a better dad because of it; able to protect his son and make him happy but able to let him go off on his own as well.

4. George Cooper from The Tricksters Series

url-5

George Cooper is an awesome dad as well. We don’t get to see George Cooper as much as a dad in the series. We see him a ton as a companion of Alanna’s in The Song of the Lioness but we do get to see him somewhat in the Tricksters series. And what we do get to see, we see a very awesome and loving and caring dad. George doesn’t leave Aly to the simple life of a wife, though he does not excuse the skills necessary to run a household, because he does find that legit. But he teaches her amazing skills; the ability to wield a dagger, the abilities of hand to hand combat, the skills of a spy, and so much more. He gives Aly the chance to take her of herself, no matter the situation and she is definitely able to do that. He also trusts her decisions. He comes to retrieve her from the Copper Isles and she insists on staying, saying that she has more work to go, and he trusts her enough to make her way, on her own, even if it is in a foreign country. I think that’s admirable when a father teaches their child and then allows them use to that knowledge to carve their own path.

3. Goofy from Disney

I love this picture above and I freakin love this movie. Its possibly one of the BEST movies that Disney has put out. I have seen it multiple times and know majority of the songs by heart (thanks dad!). I constantly have to try and forget that someone totally had to have sex with Goofy in order for him to have Max…and then apparently she took off. Think about it! Goofy is a single dad, trying to raise a teenage boy who finds him incredibly embarrassing! And so he takes him on a road trip to bond with his son, and his son LIES to him and completely doesn’t enjoy most of the trip. But of course, its Disney and it works out in the end, and Goofy ends up getting Max to the concert that he promised all the kids back home that he was going to be at and they end up having a SERIOUS blast. Goofy is a pretty awesome dad…and he has the best dance moves ever!

2. Carl Frederickson from Up

url-7

Carl isn’t a dad, but damn, he’s a good father figure to Russell in Up. Russell has an absent father, who seems to be a little busy with his new girlfriend/wife and he could really use a fatherly figure in his life. Carl still hasn’t quite recovered from his wife’s death and is pretty lonely. Put those two together, on a flying house with a talking dog and a brightly colored bird named Kevin and you get epic adventure. And along the way, you get a serious father/son type of relationship. I really love at the end when Carl is so determined to protect Russell and that he stands in for his father at his Wilderness Explorer ceremony. I also really like the end credits where they have the scrapbook/Adventure Book thing going on and it shows Carl and Russell doing all kinds of cool stuff together, the way a father and son would do together. Its SO BEAUTIFUL!!! Okay, I’m done…

1. Mr. Weasley from Harry Potter series

url-8

Mr. Weasley is the BEST dad in all of literature and fictional worlds. I don’t know, maybe its because he reminds me of my dad. Any dad that raises as many kids as Arthur Weasley does, is good in my book. I mean, the Weasleys only have one more kid than my family does so I totally know what their life is like. I wish we would have had a house like the Burrow. I think that Mr. Weasley is the epitome of what a dad can be (besides my own dad, of course, duh). He works his ass, and provides the best that he can, but he provides all the love and the right lessons and morals and values and he raises wonderful kids, even Percy. He’s brave and wonderful and silly and always there for his kids no matter what, even for those kids that aren’t his like Harry and Hermione. I can imagine that he’d be a great father-in-law and an even more awesome grandfather.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries…Also Known as My New Addiction!

For those of you who are already Lizzie Bennet fans, health and have not yet reached the episode where they reveal Darcy, illness I will warn you, I reveal who Darcy is later in this post. So if you’d like to be surprised, don’t read any further than this. You’ve been warned, fangirls!

I should start pleading with people to stop introducing me to things…seriously. Ever since I joined The Los Angeles Dumbledore’s Army in October 2011, my group of nerd friends has increased by…well, 100% because I really didn’t have a lot of nerdy friends before that.

And one of the best parts of being in this group is sharing the things you love with each other, especially those that they may not have discovered yet. I love sharing Tamora Pierce love and Cassandra Clare love and all that. I get all happy when I hear they tried it and loved it.

But it also works vice versa. They tell me about things: books, TV shows, movies, etc. And I get addicted.

As if I didn’t have enough to obsess over!

So a few weeks ago while I was away at Gallifrey One, my friend Erin told me about The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, an online vlog telling the modern day (fictional) story of Pride and Prejudice. She showed me the very first episode and I thought it was funny and cute but I didn’t really think much about it. I remember my friend Deb telling me that I would probably enjoy it and I catalogued it in my long list of things to read and watch (that list is too long to even contemplate…).

Well, a couple of days ago, my friend, Ana, who was at Gallifrey One with us, asked me if I had watched it yet because it was so good and she was blasting through episodes. Deb and Erin jumped in on the conversation and sounded really excited. And you know me, I hate to be left out of something that gets a fangirl reaction from others. I had to get on this.

I first read Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen when I was about 10 or 11 years old. I remember loving the book so much, and I’m pretty sure I didn’t really understand more than half of the book. I mean, I’m sure I understand the love story, but there is SO much more to the novel besides that, and as I reread the book over the years (and reread and reread…), I discovered more and more about the book and learned more and more about the book, and it still remains one of my favorite books. I love the story, I love Jane Austen. I think so many people see of it as a romance novel, but there is so much more there besides the romance between Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy. I seriously encourage every single one of you to get out there and read that book. Because it is one of those novels that doesn’t have copyrights, it’s available for free download on Amazon here. So no excuses.

So I jumped on this Lizzie Bennet bandwagon.

And holy addicting vlog series Batman. This is the most amazing thing ever! I blew through all 94 current episodes in a couple days. I probably could’ve watch them all in one day, if you know, homework hadn’t gotten in the way.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries is basically this: a modern adaptation of Pride and Prejudice shown in the form of video diaries, recorded by the main character, Lizzie Bennet. She lives with her marriage obsessed mother, her quiet, her fashion obsessed and super sweet sister, Jane, and her younger hyperactive handful sister, Lydia. She’s a graduate student in mass communications, making these videos with her best friend, Charlotte Lu. The neighborhood explodes with rich medical student, Bing Lee, moves in, with his sister Caroline Lee and his best friend, William Darcy.

(Clockwise starting in the left top corner: Maria Lu, Fitz William, Lydia Bennet, Lizzie Bennet, Jane Bennet, Charlotte Lu, George Wickham, Mary Bennet, Bing Lee, Caroline Lee, and Ricky Collins)

Sound familiar in the slightest? Oh yeah, Pride and Prejudice in 2012. Its amazing.

Of course, we are missing Kitty and Mary Bennet, but don’t worry they make appearances and in unexpected places.

Now these videos are the brain chain of Hank Green and Bernie Su, who are just two of the many people who make this awesome show possible. And yes, THE Hank Green, younger brother to young adult lit god, John Green, and the other half of the Vlogbrothers. If you don’t know what the Vlogbrothers are, please god go educate yourself! NOW! :D

The thing that I really like about this adapation is just the hilarity of it all, and how it really shows the depth of the characters and the reality of them all. For some people, its hard to understand the characters through Jane Austen’s writing style because it is unfamiliar to the writing we know today. However, in this adaptation, you really see the characters. You get a real sense of Jane’s kindness and her inability to say bad things about anyone. You really see Lydia’s irresponsibilty and her tendency to not take things seriously. You also see the frustrations of Charlotte as well. The thing that I liked the most though was the way you see Lizzie…she complains about everyone so much, has an opinion on everything and can be so judgemental…hence the “prejudice” part of the title. This is exactly how Elizabeth truly is in the novel, but I think sometimes you miss it because you’re so focused on the actions of Mr. Darcy. In this vlog adaptation, however, you really get to see that character flaw captured in Ashley Clement’s portrayal of Lizzie Bennet.

I also liked the direction that they went with these characters. Sure, you still have the marriage obsessed Mrs. Bennet but this is 2012/13. You can’t have the entire series based on marriage. Instead, it focuses very much on idea of the modern, career-driven, ambitious woman. Jane is in the fashion industry, Charlotte and Lizzie are both graduate students, Gigi Darcy is an employee for her brother’s company, Pemberley Digital, Lydia (mostly) works her butt off at community college. These women go through the same to similar romantic entanglements in the novel, but in very modern ways. Without spoiling too much, I really liked how they changed the Lizzie-Mr. Collins-Charlotte triangle from one of marriage and commitment to one of more modern, work-related circumstances.

Plus…the costume theater. Oh god, the costume theater is amazing. The story is mainly told by Lizzie Bennet, though people are constantly walking in on her and joining her videos. Occasionally, you get a video diary by Lydia, a couple random videos by Charlotte and Jane, Gigi Darcy along the way but mostly its Lizzie. But in order to make sure you get the story completely (or as complete as it is in her eyes), she has costumes that she wears for various people in her life, and she’ll put on a little reenactment of a recent event in her life. Its hilarious, especially when she impersonates her mom (below)…oh, god, the amount of actual laughs that this got out of me was great.

I also really like the changes they made to some of the characters. I like that they kind of cut Kitty Bennet, because in the novel, she was just Lydia’s shadow. I love the changes they did with Mary Bennet; she’s honestly one of my favorite characters in the video series. I also think I have a little crush on Briana Cuoco, who plays her. I also really like Fitz Williams, Darcy’s friend, who is given a larger role and also the role of Gigi Darcy, both pictured below. Fitz lends some serious hilarity to the films and Gigi captures the sweetness and little sister-ness of Georgiana from the original story.

But the thing that I love the most about it is…its one of my absolute favorite stories of all time told in such a fun and modern way. The episodes aren’t too long, an average of 5 to 10 minutes and each one leaves you wanting more. So far, they are up to episode 95 with only a handful left, as you can imagine, the story is nearly wrapped up.

And let me tell you, not seeing Darcy until episode 60? HORRIBLE! I am a Mr Darcy lover. Yes, Mr Darcy can be a total jerk but I still adore him and he was one of the greatest romantic heroes in literature. And when Darcy did eventually appear…well, I wasn’t disappointed. Meet Daniel Vincent Gordh, a.k.a. William Darcy.

tumblr_mctxjnnJax1qiw2h4o1_500

He is super good looking…and he just captures the essence of Mr. Darcy. And they made Mr. Darcy such a hipster. He’s always going around in ties, bowties, suspenders, little scarfs and geeky glasses. I couldn’t stop laughing every time he shows up in a different outfit, especially the cardigan and bow tie look. Too adorable. He kind of reminds me of Ed Westwick as Chuck Bass in Gossip Girl. I was most definitely not disappointed…and you really believe him as Mr. Darcy. I count the minutes until he reappears on screen.

Like I said, the story is great…its the story we know and love but in a world where women are a lot stronger and have way more freedom than they did in the time of Elizabeth Bennett. It captures the beauty and values and soul of the original story while keeping it fresh for new eyes. I seriously love it; I blew through all the current episodes as fast as I could and I really recommend you watch it!

I also recommend watching it on the actual website: lizziebennet.com. There you get the videos down by Lydia, Charlotte, Gigi, and other characters. You also get the Twitter conversations between characters as well and all of these lend more to the story than just the Lizzie episodes. I did it that way, and its awesome. You really get the full story, as much as possible, and its enjoyable and really a unique way to tell the story.

And for those of you who are a bit intrigued, check out the first episode, which I have cleverly inserted into this blog post. You’re welcome :D

Hope that you enjoy and that you become as addicted as I did!

New videos are uploaded Mondays and Thursdays at 9 am!

International Women’s Day

Today is International Women’s Day. I have two thoughts on this.

One of my thoughts is this: we shouldn’t have only one day a year where we recognize women. There are so many amazing women in this world, order in our present and our past. I think that we should appreciate these women every day, not just on a day like this: Elizabeth Stanton, Susan B Anthony, Marie Curie, Harriet Tubman, Hilary Clinton, J.K. Rowling, Oprah Winfrey. Your mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters. Yourself, if you’re a woman. There is so much we have accomplished and so much we are capable of accomplishing. And we should be aware of this every day, both men and women. Women should be aware because this is their legacy and they should believe in themselves and be proud of their gender. Men should be aware because they need to recognize women as their equals and realize how much we are capable of and realizing how much we already have done.

But it also makes me very aware of the strong female characters that I am surrounded by every single day. Hermione Granger. Ginny Weasley. Minerva McGonagall. Molly Weasley. Lily Potter. Clary Fray. Tessa Gray. Isabelle Lightwood. Lady Alanna the Lioness. Lady Keladry. Daine the Wildmage. Alianne of Pirates Swoop. Annabeth Chase. Katniss Everdeeb. Princess Leia. Susan and Lucy Pevensie. Tris Pryor. Eowyn. Arwen. Arya Stark. Catelyn Stark. Emma Swan. Buffy. Inara. Kaelie. Zoe. Rose Tyler. Martha Jones. Donna Noble. Amy Pond. Clara Oswald. Anne of Green Gables. Elizabeth Bennett. Jane Eyre. Scarlett O Hara.

I could literally go on and on and on. And I was quite tempted to do so. But I think you get my point.

The point is I am amazed and yet so happy at the amount of strong female characters that we are constantly surrounded with. The strength of all these characters, though they are all fictional, inspires us the same way that a real person does. As a reader, these characters are real to us and the amazing things they do, the obstacles they face and conquer, the decisions they make and the accomplishments they take…it makes me very proud to be a woman.

So, it’s International Women’s Day…so celebrate it. Embrace being a woman. There are so many amazing things about being a woman. This isn’t about men versus women or what sex is better. This is about equality and bringing proud of who are you and what your gender has accomplished and will accomplish. It’s a reminder that we will do what we have to do, we will fight for our rights and for that equality and we will stand up and be proud because we’ve proved ourselves, both in fiction and in life.

You know, and I’d say the same for International Men’s Day. Men should be proud as well, for the good men that are out there. For the men who have fought and accomplished and who have changed the world. For the men who recognize women as equals. Those men deserve that pride too.

So soak in the pride and remember all the amazing women that we have been privileged to have in our past and present and that we will continue into our future.

Who are some of your most inspirational women? Are they your family members, or women of our past? Are they some of the successful women of our times or fictional characters? As always, share below. :)

And you men out there, you share too :) I know you have some inspirational women in mind too!
