Blogger Spotlight: Jackie from Stardust and Shadowhunters

One of the best parts about running this blog is having the ability to meet some really cool people, nurse and some of the coolest people that I have met have led me to really cool blogs. I’ve said it before, no one’s blog is 100% original but everyone’s voices are different so there are blogs that I love to read because I love the writer, and I love the passion that they show for what they are writing. They are fun and interesting to read and they inspire me to get better and better in my blog.

So I decided to do a feature (inspired by Megan at the Nerdy Girlie’s Geek Girls Gab), where I profile the bloggers that I love. Not only do I get to find out more about them, but I also get to share them with you guys! Most of the bloggers that I follow are like me, nerd girls, fan girls and they enjoy the same things as me, and you! Every blogger that I profile is one that is super important to me and I urge you to check them out!

If you are interested in being featured on the Blogger Spotlight, feel free to contact me, please! I would love to hear from you, to feature you on the blog and to help spread the word about it!

Sara: Tell me a Little Bit About Yourself:

Jackie: I’m 21, and I drink a lot of coffee. I’m a freelance web designer/developer in Pittsburgh, but I’m from Youngstown, born and raised. I’ve been a monster and makeup artist at Canfield Scaregrounds Haunted House for 8 years this year, and I’m going to the Tom Savini SFX Makeup School in February. I’m also in the process of writing a book. I’m a crafty lady with a knitting machine and I make a lot of cool things. Some of said “cool things” include jewelry, tiny book charms, and scarves. I’m a bit of a hybrid nerd, because I’m a nerd of many feathers. I’m in more fandoms than I can count, but I’m also rather tech-savvy. I get it from my mom, who is a dorky intellectual as well. I also collect comic books and graphic novels – mostly horror-themed. I’m a rather nifty person and I love meeting new people, so feel free to message me!

Sara: Tell me about your blog:

Jackie: Stardust and Shadowhunters is my multifandom blog, despite the name. It’s a play on the phrase “We are but dust and shadow” by Horace, which is used in the Shadowhunter world (Mortal Instruments, Infernal Devices, etc). My blog is relatively new, but I can promise lots of pretty fabulous content in the near future involving news and my opinions on all my fandoms (Shadowhunters, Doctor Who, Supernatural, Sherlock, Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit, Harry Potter, ASOIAF/Game of Thrones, anything by John Green, Hemlock Grove, Warm Bodies, Hunger Games, Beautiful Creatures, Horror movies, Comic books, Zombies, and more!), as well as some goodies (ringtones, fanmixes, etc.) for you all.

Sara: What inspired you to start your blog?

Jackie: I’m a writer by nature, and I haven’t been doing much writing lately. Why not write about things I love to people who love the same things? I don’t go to many events that I can blog about, but I have a talent for making nifty things that other people can use, such as graphics, ringtones and playlists. I’m also an opinionated human. Blogging gives me a chance to get my opinions out there.

Sara: What is your favorite nerd memory?

Jackie: Due to the tragic lack of events on my side of the US, I don’t get to meet many celebrities who aren’t in bands. Despite my hideous lack of celeb cred, my favorite nerd memory would definitely have to be my very recent trip to NYC. We skipped the generic tourist traps in favor of the discovering the weirder side of the city. We went to Obscura (the store from Oddities) and bought strange things and found as many fandom-related landmarks as we could. We visited the Literary Walk even went to the Ripley’s Museum.

Sara: What are you most looking forward to, as far as new books/movies/etc?

Jackie: City of Bones comes out in less than a week! I’m pretty excited for City of Heavenly Fire as well. November 2013 is going to be a pretty fantastic month for the nerd community as well, with Catching Fire, Sherlock, Supernatural, etc. I also think I’m going to enjoy Vampire Academy, but I plan on rereading the books before I watch the movies.

mini_books

Sara: As my blog is mostly about books and reading, what are some of your favorite books or authors to read?

Jackie: Cassandra Clare, John Green, J. K. Rowling, George R. R. Martin, Garth Nix…. The list is endless. I’m also rather fond of classics, like Great Expectations and Wuthering Heights.

Sara: What are some of your favorite blogs to follow?

Jackie: Obviously, whatanerdgirlsays! I also enjoy City Of Shadowhunters, FanGirlFeeels, I Am Divergent, ifandomscollide, NovelReality, YA On My Mind , and The Librarian Who Doesn’t Say Shhh.

I’m also rather fond of a web comic called Questionable Content, written by Jeph Jacques. Check it out! Just make sure you read it from the beginning.

Sara: Who is your fictional crush (what, we’re nerd girls, we all have one!)

Jackie: Most definitely Will and Jace Herondale. I’m a sucker for intelligence paired with killer combat skills and a sense of self-loathing that only a Herondale boy can be born with. (:

Jackie’s mom is a nerd too!

I hope you all enjoyed reading about Jackie, and I hope you all head over to Stardust and Shadowhunters to follow her!

Tuesday Top Ten-Best of 2013…So Far

Well, cialis 40mg guys, medical its July 2nd. This year is half over, and I can’t believe there’s still six months of awesome left.

The way I see it…2013 has been MY year so far. I’ve had a great year and I’ve had the chance to do a TON of things, I’ve had the chance to meet SO many people and I’m feeling so good this year. I feel like I’m finally on the right track. And not just in WhatANerdGirlSays world either.

My boyfriend just graduated university and I finally got into university, which means I’m on the downhill slope of my degree. Its just been SO great and I’m so happy.

So this week’s Tuesday Top Ten is a little different, and some of you may be a little disappointed, but I just kind of wanted to recap the awesome that has happened to me this year.

SO here it is: Sara’s Tuesday Top Ten of Best Things About 2013…So Far

10. Published A Little Less than Famous

303499_307910499329819_493806600_n

I’m dying to publish my own novel. I’m dying to be a published author like all the ones that I get SO excited to meet. And I was able to finish and self-publish my novel, A Little Less than Famous. And its not perfect. It could use a lot of editing work on it but I am so insanely proud of it. I’m proud of myself for finishing it. I’m proud of myself for writing it. I’m proud of myself every time someone reads it and likes it. I am so proud of it being part of my writing journey. I hope I can find some time to sit down and really edit it (or pay someone to edit it) and share it in all its perfection. For now, it is what it is and I am still so VERY proud of it. Almost every author that I’ve ever talked to has told me to keep writing, and to just finish something and I was able to accomplish that and I am proud of myself for that. On a side note, the book is ON SALE for only 99 cents until July 5th so click here to check it out!

9. Star Trek Premiere-My First Ever!

945603_10151661076114747_2076014487_n

I had never been to a full movie premiere before! Last year, I went to the Grove with a few people from LADA and we saw an advanced screening of the Woman in Black and Daniel Radcliffe WAS a special guest and that was really super awesome but this right here was SUCH an amazing experience. I’m a fangirl, I’m a geek, and I seriously get so excited to see famous people. I can talk to them, no problem at all, but all that anxiousness and excitement is WAY too much to handle. But what a GREAT experience for me and the other girls of iFandoms Collide. We got free t-shirts, saw an advanced screening of the movie, and saw Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto and SO MANY MORE cool people. And at the end of the night, we ended up on the channel 5 news. Which, let me tell you, probably had to do with the fact that we were flirting with the guy the whole time. But seriously, a COOL time, and now all I want to do is go to premieres all the time!

8. My First Ever Gallifrey One!

picture-6

I am a new Doctor Who fan. I’ve only been watching for a little over a year now, probably right after they put up season 6 on Netflix. But as soon as I started watching it, I was hooked. This is my favorite TV show, period. And when I found out from a few friends of mine that there was an ENTIRE Doctor Who convention, I was like, “okay, I gotta be there.” Now, unfortunately this convention is a little pricey but its TOTALLY worth it and my super awesome friend, Ana, bought me my badge before they sold out and I paid her back. And I am SO grateful she did that because WHAT an experience. It is probably one of the BEST cons I have ever been. First off, its in a hotel, which means its limited to how many people can go, which is great, because you’re not crowded *too* much. Two, its SO intimate because its ALL Doctor Who. Doctor Who 24/7. Three, it was just a blast. Karaoke until 5 am, seeing all kinds of Doctor Who actors and actresses, buying WAY too much Doctor Who merch. It was amazing.

7. Clockwork Princess

clockwork-princess-official-book-cover-cassandra-clare-31431560-1266-1920

This is EASILY the best book that I’ve read so far this year. And there’s a ton of epic books coming soon and I still think this will remain the best book of the year. Easily. I waited for this book for so long and then it was supposed to come out in December of 2012 and they pushed it back to March 2013 and I was just dying for it. Then I was going to a Cassie Clare event three days after the release, where I would get my copy and I was like, no way. I can’t wait three days! So I ordered it on my Kindle, refreshed my Kindle allll night, and then at 10 pm (midnight for where it was being published), it downloaded to my Kindle and I stayed up ALL night reading, finishing it at about 3ish am. My eyes were all bloodshot and raw, and I was sobbing and it was just SO much to deal with and NO ONE had finished it, obviously, because I had stayed up all night on its release day, before the bookstores had even opened, to read it. Every single person I know who has read it, has talked about what it did to them, especially that epilogue. What a beautiful book.

6. Discovering New Books: Leigh Bardugo, Marie Lu, Tahereh Mafi, Jessica Brody and more..

url

Seriously, I discover new authors all the time, mostly because I read so super fast and I have to find new things to read. But this year…seems to be a bit more and I attribute that to the combined factors that I know have a GoodReads that I am VERY active on, I have this blog, and I go to all these events now. I am discovering authors left and right, and they’re all so amazing, and I can’t keep up with my “to-read” list anymore. Before, I was just rereading the same books over and over again (which is okay, of course) but everyone would be like “You’re reading Goblet of Fire again!” or “You’re reading City of Bones again?!” and I was like, well, sure, because I don’t know what else to read. But NOW that I’ve made so many friends, especially all of YOU guys, I’m discovering new authors and new books and I’m loving it.  I am so excited for all the books that are now coming out in the second half of this year because I discovered their prequels in this half of the year.

5. City of Bones Meet and Greet at WonderCon

tmi-148

I am SO spoiled when it comes to City of Bones, at least so far. I mean, I’ve been SUPER bummed at missing out on the City of Bones panel at San Diego Comic Con because my best friend is getting married that day. And I realized, yeah, I do want to be there. But I’ve met them all already, the ones that are going to be there, AND I still have the TMI premiere coming up next month. So I’m still so lucky. I was able to be one of the five people that got to go to the VIP signing for City of Bones. I was planning on getting to WonderCon super early that day to try and get my hands on a wristband for the signing but it turns out, I didn’t even need to. Cassie did a contest through her Twitter, and I was picked and I got to go to the VIP signing where I got a book and a HUGE poster signed by Cassie, Jamie, Lily and Kevin. Cassie remembered me from the week before (see later), I told Jamie I was cooler than him (one of my finer moments haha), I could barely utter a word to the beautiful Lily, and I told Kevin that he was awesome in Gossip Girl. What a fantastic amazing experience.

4. Author Breakfast at Ontario Teen Book Fest

944643_371891146265087_230672172_n

Okay, so the whole reason I went to this fest was to meet Morgan Matson, Jessica Brody (again) and Marie Lu. I left that fest feeling like a million dollars, and meeting a TON of new authors that I now love and adore because I’ve read all their books and they are SO amazing. It was a seriously cool experience to sit down with these authors, and interview them for our first ever vlog post and to just sit and talk writing with them. I am an aspiring writer and being around all those published authors was TOO much for me to handle. I had a blast all day. All the panels were super awesome, Leigh Bardugo made me crack and has now become one of my favorite authors. Meeting Morgan after all this time of worshipping her book, Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour was an experience. But it was also great because the four of us from iFandoms Collide and my sister Jessica got to go to the author breakfast because we were bloggers and we really got an intimate time with all of the authors and that was just the best part. Especially since now, whenever we see any of these authors, they totally remember us. We made an impression!

3. Seeing the Arrested Development Banana Stand

400537_381946011926267_625769565_n

Okay, some people may be like, seriously, Sara? A banana stand? But it really is one of the BEST things about this year and there’s a lot of reasons why. I mean, Arrested Development is a GREAT show so there’s that. Frozen bananas (FREE ones) are SO delicious. And it was something that I could do with my boyfriend. My boyfriend is so incredibly patient and good with me being a fangirl and going to all these events and freaking out over things that most people just don’t get. He’s SO good with me, I swear. There are NOT a lot of boys in this world that would be as awesome as he is with me. I’m an intense person. But he’s the big Arrested Development fan and he got me into it almost six years ago, before we were even dating and it was one of those things that we always did together, watch that show. We’ve done that several times since then, with TV shows, but that was the first one and so we have kind of a bond with that. And it was super fun, celebrating that it had come back for a long long awaited fourth season. And its fun to be able to extend my nerd fun with my boyfriend every once in awhile :)

2. iFandoms Collide

1017089_473713576050841_1173722618_n

Seriously, this would be number one if number one wasn’t so epicly epic. I am so grateful for meeting these four girls. I met Tatiana, Sylvia and Megan back in April, though we’ve known each other through Twitter for so much longer. We actually were all at WonderCon and didn’t even realize it. Megan was part of the normal autograph session for City of Bones but Sylvia and Tatiana were both at the VIP too, and we didn’t even realize it. Then, when the Festival of Books came around, we all realized that we lived within a few miles of each other, and decided to go together…and the rest, as they say, is history. The first day we ever spent together was April 20th, day one of the Festival of Books. That literally was ONLY two months ago. TWO months…and yet it feels like its been forever. We’ve bonded so fast, and we’ve created iFandoms Collide together and so many of the cool things that I’ve gotten to do this year is with them. So thanks Megan, Sylvia and Tatiana for coming into my life and making it fangirl awesome. I can’t wait to go on the road trip with you, stalk Robbie Sheehan, hit up the City of Bones, Catching Fire and Divergent premieres with you and just be friends forever :)

And Gabby and Paulina, I love you girls too! I wish I saw my other ifandoms girls just as much :D

1. Meeting and Interviewing Cassandra Clare

67954_441782515910614_72620953_n

I can’t believe this even happened. All these months later and I’m still like, I interviewed one of my absolute favorite authors. I got to INTERVIEW her. I got to sit across the table from her and interview her and she gave me a hug and she saw my tattoo and took pictures of it with her phone and gave me a cool epic Clockwork Princess poster that, like, no body else has and a Clockwork Princess pendant designed by Hebel and ohmygod. I couldn’t even handle it. I entered the contest, and just never thought about it until I got the email from Allison Tran at the Mission Viejo Library and just DIED. I was so excited, I started jumping up and down at school…and I’m in college, by the way. I was SO nervous to meet her and so nervous to interview but she was so cool, and she made me feel super relaxed and answered my questions and told funny stories and its an experience that I’ll NEVER ever forget, no way, as long as I live.

If you’re interested in watching the interview, here it is!

*     *     *     *

I seriously have had SUCH a great year so far and I am so lucky in the things I’ve been able to do and all I can think of is…

If the first six months of 2013 were THIS cool, the last six months are going to be even MORE COOL!

I can’t wait, and I’ll be sharing it ALL with all of you awesome people.

Don’t forget to check out previous Tuesday Top Tens!

What has been the best part of 2013 for YOU? Is it a book or a movie? Did you get to meet someone cool or was it an accomplishment you reached? As always, share in the comments!

Blogger Spotlight-Megan from LuxenArmy.Net

One of the best parts about running this blog is having the ability to meet some really cool people, generic and some of the coolest people that I have met have led me to really cool blogs. This week’s blogger is Megan from Luxen Army, but also iFandoms Collide and Novel Reality.

She also writes for City of Shadowhunters, The Mortal Institute and Page to Premiere.

Her Facebook Page

You can find the social media pages for Luxen Army below!

This is how she introduces herself:

Megan Christine Herondale/Lewis/Ivashkov/Black/Ryves/Shaw/Odair/Collins/Parnell …okay so my name’s only Megan Christine Kaniasty and I tried to steal a couple of fictional last names – arrest me (and then ask me what ever I say can and will be held against me…because in that case I would say…)

Sara: Tell me a Little Bit About Yourself:

Megan: I am a 22 year old full time student. I am going to school at a private Christian college called Biola University, and in two years I will be the proud owner of a BA in elementary education with an emphasis in special needs, a minor in Biblical studies, and a certification to teach. My earliest memory was of me wanting to become a published writer, and that is exactly what I plan on doing. I am working on a trilogy now, but I have also been keeping up other book ideas in my journals as they come along. I write everyday, whether it is for a blog, in my diary, or for my novels – I need to write, it is my forever love. My other love is this boy Sean Patrick Sugg. In my phone he is known as “Jace Herondale”. We’ve been together for almost 6 years now, and even though he isn’t an alien, a shadowhunter, or some awesome downworlder, we have one of those real life fairy tail stories. Oh yeah, I also love to read. Obsessed with it actually; books are my heroine. I know how blessed I am and I thank God every single day!

BJe0JzuCUAAxEwh

Sara: Tell me about your blog:

Megan: Of all the blogs I am apart of, or that I write for, LuxenArmy.net is my baby because it is something that I had created. I brought on three other very talented girls from different time zones to help me run the website at all hours of the day, so that this becomes the best lux fansite out there! Luxenarmy.net is a fansite based on Jennifer Armentrout’s Lux series novels – it even has approval of author Jennifer Armentrout! The site offers everything from news on Jennifer Armentrout’s novels (specifically focusing on the Lux series, and the Arum series) to forums for fans to live chat in with one another, and even a place to submit lux series fanfiction and fanart! The luxen army has a twitter @LUXENarmy , a tumblr, a facebook page that you should like and, luxenarmy.net ‘s origins, the facebook group.

Sara: What inspired you to start your blog?

Megan: I started the luxen army after interviewing Jennifer Armentrout for ifandomscollide.com. I have called Lux fans the luxen army before, but after the interview, I really wanted to create a real life luxen army. I did it for fun, not expecting many people to see it because who am I? I am nobody really, just this nerd girl in LA. Well little did I know Jennifer Armentrout would catch wind of my facebook group and share about it over twitter. This facebook group of mine turned into a website, a facebook page, tumblr, and twitter because of the amount of unbelievable support that flooded in. I asked Tatiana, one of my best friends to help me out because I was new at this, she has a blog, and she was there when the luxen army invaded my life. Two other girls came to me asking if I would like help with the site, and thank God for them. Erin has designed the website beautifully, and Jessica has an AMAZING talent that I can’t wait to be shared with everyone in the Luxen Army!

Sara: What is your favorite nerd memory?

BKgye3QCcAECgis

Megan: My FAVORITE nerd memory is Wondercon 2013. The Mortal Instruments is my favorite book series, Cassandra Clare is my favorite author, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is being made into a film, and they were having a panel at wondercon AND a meet and greet (if you happen to be lucky enough to win tickets TO the meet and greet). Lets just say I was really, REALLY lucky. Long story short, I was dressed up as one of the characters, Isabelle Lightwood (this is the nerdy part, me in cosplay. Well, I guess being at Wondercon is pretty nerdy as well…) I had an unbelievable time meeting the cast, and got kicked out for having my custom phone case signed. A security guard took my badge, and walked me out of Wondercon. We were talking the whole way out, and before I left I ended up talking my way into getting the security guard to give me my wondercon badge back so that I could still get back in. I met the cast, hugged the cast, and made a memorable exit. BEST. NERD. MEMORY. EVER…I have another amazing nerd memory meeting the director of The Mortal Instruments…I am a truly blessed nerd girl.

Sara: What are you most looking forward to, as far as new books/movies/etc?

Megan: I can’t even fathom an answer to this question. I get butterflies in my stomach and see lots of pictures flashing in my mind of new books, movies, movie trailers, interviews, and such, when I think of this question. I am looking forward to it all.

BF75_BYCUAAL9mM

Sara: As my blog is mostly about books and reading, what are some of your favorite books or authors to read?

Megan:  Series: The Mortal Instruments, The Infernal Devices, The Lux series, The Shades of London, The Demon’s Lexicon, The Divergent series, The Hunger Games series, The Morganville Vampires, The Hush Hush series, The Vampire Academy series, The Mara Dyer series, The Feather Trilogy…the list can go on and on. As for Authors, well that list can go on and on as well, here are just a few (not including the authors of the series I’ve listed above): Sara Dessen, Nicholas Sparks, Morgan Matson, Andrew Smith, Leigh Bardugo, Lex Thomas… and again I say the list will go on and on (I know there are a TON more authors I absolutely LOVE but did not list, please PLEASE know you’re in my heart, but if I continue to list authors I love, well this would turn into an encyclopedia length blurb!)

Sara: What are some of your favorite blogs to follow?

tumblr_inline_mn42qeu7I01qz4rgp

Megan: I don’t really follow blogs other than those I write for, my best friends’ blogs: whatanerdgirlsays.com and fangirlfeeels.wordpress.com, OR select authors. Cassandra Jean is the exception being neither a blog I write for, my best friend, or an author – I just think she is absolutely brilliant!

Sara: Who is your fictional crush (what, we’re nerd girls, we all have one!)

Megan: Now THIS list will be quite long, I have more than one fictional crush. I guess I will give you my top ten – narrowing it down to only 10 is quite hard by the way.

1. Will Herondale (TID)

2. Jace Herondale (TMI)

3. Daemon Black (Lux)

4. Four (yes I put Four on 4 on purpose) (Divergent)

5. Jem Carstairs (especially after reading the Clockwork Prince graphic novel!) (TID)

6. Simon Lewis (TMI)

7. Cam Hamilton (Wait for You)

8. Adrian Ivashkov (Vampire Academy)

9. Finnick Odair (THG)

10. Nick Ryves (Demon’s Lexicon)

…OH WAIT! I have more, TONS more fictional crushes! Oh boy, I believe I am a fictional whore…

Handmade Fandom Merch!

One thing that is really awesome about books and fandoms and all that is the stuff that comes out of that: fan art, this fan fiction, information pills fan merch, all of it. I love the creativity that pours out of people when they read these books or watch these shows. I seriously admire it. I just tend to drool over fictional characters, and curl up in a ball and cry when the authors torture us with sad parts and cliffhangers.

But, really, I admire so much the amount of awesome that comes from fans. I think its fantastic and I love to admire things like that and I love to BUY things from all these cool people.

And I know a few people, personally, who are part of this, and a couple people who I don’t know personally but I want to talk about anyway.

So I’m going to talk a bit about some shops where you can buy some really cool, handmade things, based on some of the fandoms we love!

*    *    *    *    *

Ellie’s Quirky Creations

The first person that I am going to feature is my own mother, Ellie, who runs Ellie’s Quirky Creations.

Ellie’s Quirky Creations mostly focuses on custom made dolls, of various people in different fandoms. She has made several Harry Potter characters, the 10th and 11th Doctors, and more. She does custom orders, of course, and I’ll let you in on a secret: She’s working on some TMI dolls! Check out some pictures!

Severus Snape

534393_398784626895674_1136806018_n

Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Harry Potter and Severus Snape.

She takes custom orders, and ships internationally and her dolls are absolutely awesome. They are made with sturdy fabrics and are super durable. I have a Luna Lovegood, Amy Pond and 11th Doctor and they are constantly on my bed, being tossed around and they are in perfect condition.

She also dabbles in other crafts as well, such as handmade wreaths (her Angels one is to DIE for), and cosplay costumes as well!

Check out her Facebook page for more pictures and how to order!

FanGirlFeeels Fangirl Design

The next person I am featuring is Sylvia from FanGirlFeels, who just started her own shop, FanGirlFeels on Etsy!

So far, Sylvia is working on over the shoulder bags, with fandom symbols, but she hopes to expand to more, because she is incredibly talented. Check out some of the Divergent bags she has already worked on!

Dauntless bag

il_fullxfull.474017180_8s0c

Amity bag. My personal favorite but I could be COMPLETELY biased because I’m Amity ;)

il_fullxfull.474072549_7bqt

Erudite, Candor, Amity and Dauntless. She also has Abnegation bags available as well.

All of these are handpainted and handsewn and are WONDERFUL. I can’t wait to get my hands on them. Each one is individually made, and super sturdy and can hold a good amount of stuff! She also ships internationally as well!

You can check out Sylvia’s Etsy Store, and look out for more things from this creative girl coming soon!

These girls are fantastic, and their bags and some seriously high quality. They are a little pricier than others you may find, but they are unique and they are worth it. I can tell this bag is going to last a VERY long time. I also love that they take the time to design each bag individually, that they send “proofs” of the design before making it, and all of that. They are amazing!

Check out their website here, and also their Facebook page! Don’t be afraid to contact these awesome ladies for their custom designs! They even gave some of their custom work to Cassandra Clare, Jamie Campbell Bower, Lily Collins and Kevin Zegers!

Unfavorable Characters-And Why I Like Them

So I was talking with some of my friends the other night about books, hospital of course, hospital because that’s seriously what we do ALL the time (I’m looking at you, Tatiana, Sylvia, Paulina, Megan and Gabby) and we started talking about City of Bones because Paulina is reading it for the first time. (I know, right? Sigh, at least she’s reading it now! Haha) She had already kind of started liking different characters and we were talking about that and I mentioned that my favorite TMI character, besides Jace Wayland (because we all know how I get about Jace Wayland) is Alec Lightwood.

And that started a discussion on the likability of Alec. I seemed to be the only person that really actually liked him. For the most part, there were negative comments about Alec. Its not that they didn’t like him; they just weren’t particularly fond of him. They said he was pompous, and mean and things like that. And they aren’t really wrong. But…I love Alec, and probably for those reasons. And I usually get a sort of incredulous reaction when I express how much I really love Alec.

That’s not really the first time that’s happened either. I tend to like characters that aren’t always the most favorable of characters. I love Alec Lightwood. My favorite HP character is Ron Weasley. I like James Potter, as well. Jessamine Lovelace from TID? Yeah, I liked her too. I liked Pippa Cross in A Great and Terrible Beauty and I actually really like Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones (from what I know so far…). I also really like Draco Malfoy as well.

I also tend to get a lot of gasps and surprised looks when I say I don’t like a particular character, or that I’m not as obsessed with them as most people are. Like Severus Snape…I don’t like him, sorry. I don’t like him the way the fandom does. I think Alan Rickman is awesome but I’m just not a huge fan. Same with Dobby; that guy is SOOOO annoying, I can’t even handle it. I like Simon Lewis in TMI but I felt he was kind of a stereotypical character and I am not obsessed with him like most of the TMI fandom is. And so on.

So I started to think, why is it that I tend to like the characters that most people don’t pick as their favorite? Why do I tend to be very apathetic toward characters that people go insane over? I really started to think this over. And I came up with some reasons.

They are more realistic.

Don’t get me wrong. I love Harry Potter. I love Hermione Granger and Jace Wayland and all of these characters but a lot of times, they aren’t the most realistic of characters. Now, don’t jump down my throat just yet. What I’m saying is, they are realistic, but they aren’t the MOST realistic characters of the novel. I prefer characters like Ron, Alec, Draco, James, Jessamine because I believe they tend to represent human nature a lot more than maybe we are aware of or what we want to admit.

Take Ron Weasley as an example.

url

I think people like him for the most part, as part of the trio, but I don’t think people are overly fond of him. I know a ton of people who will bad mouth him to the end of time, and they usually bring up the way he acted with Harry in Goblet of Fire when his name is chosen, and then also in Deathly Hallows, when he leaves Hermione and Harry. And I can understand where they are coming from. You can sort of be frustrated and angry with Ron and the way he acts.

However, I think the way he reacts is the most realistic reaction of all of them. Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley are all extraordinary characters, and they’re all wonderful, brave, fantastic characters. But come on, let’s be real. How many of us, actual seventeen/eighteen year olds would make the kind of sacrifices that they did? I mean, I’m sure there would be a good amount. I know that you tend to surprise yourself when put under extreme circumstances, but let’s face it, teenagers aren’t always prepared for these kind of situations. I think the fact that Ron is tired and hungry and irritable and frustrated is completely normal and expected. I would be. I don’t know how I would be if I was put in the kind of situations that they are. And when it comes to Goblet of Fire? We are all victims to the green monster of envy and jealousy and I think that Ron being angry at Harry is normal. I think its realistic. I think that its the most realistic and genuine reaction, in both of those situations.

They are more relatable.

Again, don’t all start attacking me. Its not that I don’t think that these other characters aren’t relatable because they are! They totally are. There’s a reason they are the main characters and the ones that people remember. They are completely relatable. But I tend to find those disliked characters a little more relatable.

Let’s talk about Alec Lightwood for a moment.

url-1

What I’ve seemed to notice about those who tend not to like Alec is that he’s pompous, proud, he’s irrational and emotional, and he can be mean, and he does something INCREDIBLY stupid in City of Lost Souls.  I’m not denying that; definitely not. But I can relate to Alec Lightwood so much, more so than probably any of the characters in that book because he is so REAL. He’s eighteen years old, and he’s gay, and he can’t really bring himself to admit that. Its hard enough for someone to come out as a normal teenager and even harder in a conservative, tight knit society that the Shadowhunters have created. Then he has Magnus and I think a lot of his growth in his self-esteem is hanging on that relationship. I think he feels more confident when he has Magnus‘s love.

And yes, obviously Magnus is an immortal being and has previous relationships and love in the past. We do know that, and I know that it is possible for you to love more than one person in your life. But again, Alec is not a very self-confident person and I’m sure hearing about Magnus’s previous loves, and coming face to face with one as manipulative as Camille has to be SO hard on him and his self-esteem. It doesn’t help that Magnus is very close-mouthed about his past. I know he thinks he’s doing Alec a favor by sparing him from details of a past that isn’t important anymore but I think it makes Alec feel worse, and it makes him have crazy, insecure thoughts because he’s insecure. I also think that he comes across as pompous and mean because of his insecurities, to cover up how he’s really feeling.

I know exactly how that feels. I know how scary it can be to come out to people; I know it was for me. I know what it is like to be so unbelievably insecure and lacking of confidence in yourself that you sabotage your relationship because again, I’ve been there. I’ve had the sort of insecurities that Alec does and if you’re already an emotional person, the way Alec is, you’re going to do things that are irrational. I think Alec is a very real and relatable character. I feel like people try to pretend that we don’t have insecurities like that, the ones that make us do those kinds of things, that make us do BAD, mean, or hurtful things. I think its realistic to have a character like Alec who is emotional and irrational and impulsive and making the wrong decisions and making mistakes and messing things up because we all do these sort of things. We all do the wrong things all the time, because we’re human and Alec is a very human character, which is why I love him so much.

They’re a lot like me?

Okay, I don’t mean this in a way to feel sorry for myself or any of that but I’m a book worm. And sure, that’s super cool now. Everyone seems to be reading now but for most of my life, especially through middle school and high school, I was teased hugely for spending most of my time with my nose in a book. And I’m kind of an intense person. I am emotional, impulsive, sometimes irrational and I just FEEL so much, you know? I’ve always been like that. And I’m a person that has never had a ton of friends all at one time. I’ve been unpopular.

So maybe I understand and connect with these characters more than the others because of their unpopularity? I understand their motives, I understand that their loneliness can sometimes make them do stupid things, or come across stupid.

Take Jessamine for instance, from The Infernal Devices. She’s lonely; she doesn’t fit in with the Shadowhunters and doesn’t feel that same pull, the same calling as the rest of them do. She wants to be normal, wants to have a normal life, to marry and have children and escape the life that she doesn’t belong to, not really. And yeah, she betrays people and she’s not a very nice person. But I can understand her motivations and I can understand why she did the things she did. I understand wanting something so badly that she was willing to do anything for that.

This also makes me think of Pippa Cross in A Great and Terrible Beauty, who is often called annoying, spoiled, impulsive, irrational, etc. I completely understand Pippa. She’s powerless, in ever way that she can be powerless. She is absolutely beautiful (okay, so that one isn’t exactly relatable haha) and she’s a tool her parents are using to get out of their debt. She isn’t valued for her mind, for the things she thinks, for her dreams and her wishes. She’s insecure and that makes her biting, mean, a bully. They say bullies tend to be incredibly insecure people. I think Pippa is afraid of not being heard, of being looked over and not feeling important. I know how that feels. I think she also feels like, even though she’s beautiful, she’s constantly in the shadow of Felicity because Felicity is clever and charming and dynamic. I DEFINITELY can understand that because I tend to find friends who are more outgoing and dynamic and more well-liked than I am. Which brings me to my last point.

I understand these characters.

When you really come and put all of these characters, it boils down to I understand them, and understanding them makes them more real, more natural and more genuine. I understand their motives and their emotions and why they make the decisions the do.

I understand Alec. I understand that he is insecure and that he’s impulsive and he’s a teenager with raging emotions and it makes him irrational. I understand the mistakes one can make when they have that kind of personality and those kind of insecure thoughts. Like I said, been there, done that. I’ve made incredibly stupid decisions like Alec, sabotaged my friendships and relationships.

I understand Jessamine, wanting something so badly that you would do anything for it, even hurt those who have only your best interests at heart because you are so focused on that goal that its so hard to pay attention to something else.

I understand Ron Weasley, because I know what its like to be in others’ shadows and to feel like you’re constantly second best to someone else. I know that I could probably not handle a situation like being on the run, trying to take on the biggest villain of all time as well as Hermione and Harry. I would probably be like Ron, I would feel discouraged and hungry and angry and frustrated and hopeless. I would.

I understand Draco Malfoy, who I believe is a product of his environment, a kid who only knows what his father has taught him and I believe that he eventually realizes what he has done is wrong. I believe he is a kid that makes the wrong decisions but changes things before he and his conscience and his soul can be lost forever to evil. I feel sorry for him, and I have fantasies that he became a better and happier person after the war, after he comes to terms with the mistakes that he made and learned from them.

I also understand Cersei Lannister. Okay, not the whole, I’m in love with my brother thing because that’s kind of gross. But I understand that she was basically forced to marry someone that she didn’t love and that she was used, abused and disrespected and that would make any self-respecting woman angry. And all she wants to do is protect her children. Sure, she doesn’t quite go about it in the BEST way possible but I do understand. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Cersei was scorned BIG time and I can understand her anger, her need for…revenge and to get what she feels she has earned.

Lastly, I also like James Potter, and besides just the fact that he’s Harry’s dad and without him, we wouldn’t have Harry. I think he was a great man and a great person. I think he had a big head, and was pompous and spoiled and a bully when he was a child because of the environment he grew up in, where he was spoiled and adored by his parents. But I don’t think he was a terrible person and I think he grew up to be a great man, who learned from his mistakes and changed who he was, and became the man that everyone talked about to  Harry.

*      *      *

So okay, maybe you don’t agree with me. Maybe you still think I’m crazy and I like the weirdest characters and what is wrong with you and all of that and that’s okay! I have read blog posts and articles about those characters that I don’t like, like Snape, and I’ve understood but I haven’t agreed and I’m sure you have done the same.

But that’s just the way I feel. I like those secondary characters that not as many people like. I like those underdog characters that don’t always make the right decisions or say the right things because they are the most real to me, and they are the characters that jump off the page to me.

I am not a perfect person, and I’m okay with that. I come to terms with myself and my personality more and more each day but I’ve been insecure and emotional and impulsive and stupid and annoying and I’ve been mean and I’ve been prideful. So I understand these characters and I understand that sometimes you do the wrong things and say the wrong things and you’re not liked and you lose friends and boyfriends and loved ones and you’re not popular and you’re alone. I recognize that.

I think that so many of these popular characters go through the same things. I do believe that, but I do believe that they tend to do these things in a way that can be admired, or make them to be a struggling hero or a martyr or that sort of thing. I think they often times end up making the right decisions and that they have these redeeming qualities that are more obvious than their flaws. I think these other characters, their flaws are more obvious than their good qualities because their flaws cause problems in the stories.

But I see these characters for their good and their bad and I saw their genuineness and I love them for that. So I’ll stick to liking those characters that may not be as popular as the others. Even if I have to continually defend them, because I like them for a reason, for many reasons, and that’s all that matters right? These characters are real to me, and therefore feel like real friends to me, real people that I know.

So what do you think? What are some characters that you like that some people don’t really agree with? As always, share in the comments. I love to hear from you guys!

Tuesday Top Ten-Favorite Cliffhangers

So I was hanging out with my girls yesterday, ed (that would be Tatiana, Sylvia and Paulina, my girls from iFandoms Collide) and of course, most of our conversations center around books. Books books books. I run a young adult book blog, as well as Sylvia, Tatiana runs a Mortal Instruments site and Paulina runs a Divergent site.

Anyway, we obviously were talking about all these books and how we absolutely cannot wait until the sequels or final books, like Allegiant and City of Heavenly Fire and books like that.

And its SO true. There are so many books out there that I just can’t wait for. I can’t wait for Origin by Jennifer L. Armentrout, and House of Hades by Rick Riordan and Allegiant by Veronica Roth and Champion by Marie Lu, and SO so so so many more.

Because let’s face it, these authors? They know exactly how to torture us, how to leave us hanging, dying for the next book, counting down the days just to find out what happens next .

So this is the inspiration for this week’s Tuesday Top Ten: the top ten cliffhangers. These nine books (and one movie) leave us hanging, cursing the authors and lamenting over the fact that we have to wait days, months, years to find out what happens next.

So here it goes guys, my favorite cliffhangers…that both left me excited and pissed off. In good ways of course :)

I am going to warn you guys right now, I’m talking about cliffhangers. Which means if you haven’t read these books, it includes spoilers. Just deal with it. Haha. Skip the ones you haven’t read yet!

10. Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

url-5

Suzanne Collins is a brutal lady who is fully capable of breaking all of our hearts and she seriously did that with Catching Fire. Honestly, she is SO lucky that I picked up this series literally like a few days before Mockingjay came out. If I would have had to wait all that time like the original fans did…I’d probably die. What a ridiculous ending. Like HOW DARE YOU Suzanne Collins for ending Catching Fire with the words “District 12 is Gone!” Like, how could you do that? I knew that there were rumblings of a rebellion going on, but I honestly didn’t expect this plan that they had come up with to actually work, or to lead to what it did. One minute, they’re trying to eliminate opponents in the arena, the next thing you know, Katniss is basically blowing up the arena and being taken away. It was insane. All this action is suddenly happening and you don’t know what’s going on, and then it just ends. It ends with the line that District 12 is gone, Katniss’s home is gone. You don’t know if her mother or Prim or Madge or anyone is safe. You don’t know anything. It just ends. I swear, I almost threw the book across the room.

9. Opal by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Opal cover 500px

I like these books a lot. I think Jennifer Armentrout creates a really fun, sci-fi book, with a lot of epic sexiness in it too. But there’s a lot of awesome sci-fi in it. I think people might look at a cover like this and be deterred from it because it looks like a romance novel, but it is SO much more than that. That being said, in this book, there’s a lot built up to this moment where Katy, Daemon, and the rest break into a facility to get Beth back. And here’s the thing, you know its not going to go perfectly. What plan ever goes perfectly? I’ll tell you: none. Ever. Never. So I knew something was going to go down, and I knew I was getting close to the end so I had a feeling it was going to be a pretty epic ending. What I didn’t expect was for it to end with Daemon, safe, and Katy, stuck inside, facing the very people that she needs to stay very, very far away from. She’s stuck! She turns away from Daemon to face whats coming after them and then it just ends! How could you do that to me? I was like, NO WAY! And now I have to wait until August 27th to find out what happens next. Who knows what happened to Katy!

8. The Crown of Embers by Rae Carson

url-2

I tend to throw my books across the room, either when I’m like “that book was TERRIBLE” or when a book makes you so mad but in a good way. That’s exactly what The Crown of Embers did…except I had to hold myself back because I was reading this book on my Kindle. Probably not a good idea to throw that. But damn, does Rae Carson create an amazing fantasy world and weave a great story. She’s talented writer, but oh was I SO angry when I read the end of this novel. There had been so much going on, Elisa was on this impossible quest to find something that she didn’t even really know exists, she nearly dies, escapes, and is finally going to head home and hopefully bring her kingdom back together…and then the love of her life, Hector, though he doesn’t know it yet, is taken from her. Yanked away from her and now she has to go and rescue him, before they hurt him or torture him or kill him. I was SO MAD. All I could think of was…no, Elisa has to bring her kingdom back together, and she needs to save her people, and there’s already been way too much drama for this book AND NOW YOU TOOK AWAY HECTOR! I was not pleased about having to wait until August 27th for that but I was lucky enough to get my hands on an ARC so I know what happens :)

7. Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo

original

OHMYGOD Leigh Bardugo is AMAZING. I am so into her books and I only picked them up a month ago! But I am officially addicted. She gives us an intricate fantasy world with incredible characters and an addicting story. She has inspired me so much with her books, and her world that I just started a fansite for her trilogy called The Grisha Army, and you should totally check it out! Anyway, that being said, and taken care of, Siege and Storm came out one week ago today. And I am STILL reeling over what happened in this book. I’m not going to spoil too much on this one because it just came out and I really am pushing people to read this series, but what Leigh does to her main character, Alina, is incredible. The kind of power she gives her, the motivations, the situations. You don’t see that ending coming in the slightest and when it does, you’re left, jaw dropped, heart racing, hoping for more pages, and knowing that you aren’t going to get any more. Rune and Rising, the third book, has no cover, no release date, nothing, of course, since Siege and Storm came out just last week. But I don’t know if I’ll make it, I need to know what happens with Alina and Mal and the Darkling and Sturmhond and all of them.

6. Insurgent by Veronica Roth

url-4

Oh Veronica Roth, you sneaky talented lady you know. Actually I can’t call you lady because that’s weird; you’re six months younger than me haha. But oh how dare you! The thing you have to understand about the Divergent series is that I purchased the first book on my Kindle and stayed up until about…I think one a.m.-ish to read it. Insurgent had just come out THAT day and so I immediately downloaded Insurgent and read it in about 3 or 4 hours. I distinctly remember the sun coming up as I finished that book. And I couldn’t even believe it. I was exhausted and uncomfortable and my eyes were burning and I was like…you did NOT just do this. You did not just end it that way, Veronica Roth. How dare you? And like I said, I read this book the day it came out, which is May 1st, 2012. The release date for Allegiant is October 27th. I’ve been waiting FOREVER it seems like to find out what is going to happen next. The very last line of the book is “Then the shouting begins.” SERIOUSLY? I can’t even handle it. I need to know what is going on…and I’ll have waited a year and half by the time I know.

5. Prodigy by Marie Lu

url-1

This has major spoilers. Don’t read this if you’ve never read Prodigy before. Seriously.

Marie Lu, you are an absolute genius. In a world where we are constantly getting new young adult dystopian series, you are an author that stands out amongst them all and I truly believe this. I know so many people who are over the whole dystopian books thing but this is one series I will pressure you to try, even if you’re over it. Its totally worth it. Its an absolutely amazing, one-of-a-kind series :) But this book…it almost feels like it would be the last book of the series, in a way. A lot of things happen to make it seem like a conclusion but then it completely 180s on you! Sure, there’s a leader but its a shaky leader and a shaky government and a government that is NOT supported by outside governments. And yay, maybe June and Day can finally get to be together but June is offered a position that would keep her away from Day, permanently and she doesn’t want to do that but then Day tells her to do it, and you learn that he does it because he is DYING. Day, the MAIN CHARACTER OF THE NOVEL BESIDES JUNE, is dying. How…how…how…NO! There’s NO way this is happening right now. Luckily enough, Prodigy came out in January of this year, and we only have to wait until November, not even a full year. Because I NEED to find out what happens next. You can’t kill a main character, you just can’t!

4. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

city_of_bones

This is one of my favorite cliffhangers mostly because its absolutely hilarious. Seriously if you have not read these books yet, do not read this. Because it will kill the entire book series for you. You’re brought into the world of Shadowhunters, by Clary, a normal sixteen year old girl whose mom is kidnapped and she then finds out she’s a Shadowhunter and she meets super hot Jace Wayland and they’re trying to find a way to get her mom back and they learn she was once married to an evil guy named Valentine and he kidnapped her. All this fun, awesome, dramatic stuff is going on. And just when you think, there’s going to be this battle scene and things are going to mostly work out, and then you learn that Jace’s father is Valentine, and that Clary’s father is Valentine and that they’re brother and sister…and they’re falling in love. And you’re like…no, no way. No way is this happening right now. How, what, but, he’s and she’s and they…what?! I went out and bought City of Ashes the next morning, basically as soon as the bookstore opened because I was like…this can’t be right, this is NOT right. What a great way to get people to continue to read your books, Cassie, seriously.

3. Empire Strikes Back-Star Wars by George Lucas

url-6

The one movie on the list. I was trying to keep it all books but…I had to put it on there because it is one of the BEST cliffhangers of ALL time. The only reason its number 3 and not number 1 is because this movie and the following movie, both came up before I was even born so it wasn’t a huge cliffhanger for me, personally. I watched this movie for the first time when I was about five years old so it probably didn’t have the same impact on me as it would have if I had seen it for the first time, in theaters, at an older age. But its an amazing cliffhanger. Literally everything has gone to CRAP! Han Solo is frozen in carbonite and taken away to Jabba’s palace. The rebellion is feeling less than spectacular. Yoda and Obi Wan are hinting that there is “another” that could save the galaxy from the Empire and the Sith influence. And Luke! Luke has just found out that the person he must take down, the person he has to face and get rid of….is his FATHER! What an amazing moment in movie history. George Lucas kept this a secret from pretty much EVERYONE, and it was the most shocking moment, and the best cliffhanger. I’ve never felt more defeated at the end of a movie, ever. I don’t know how people waited to find out what happened next, I don’t think I could have handled that.

2. Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan

Jacket

This book. This book KILLED me. There were so many feels, yanking you in about a hundred different directions. The biggest thing that I just loved about this book is that we finally get the whole gang, both old characters and new characters of the Heroes of Olympus all together in one book. Jason, Piper, Leo, Hazel, Frank, Percy, Annabeth, they’re all together now. And Percy and Annabeth are finally back together and they’re so cute and in love and I’m shipping them so hard, and then they get separated because Annabeth has to go on her own little separate quest for the Mark of Athena. But then they end up back together, he comes for her and you think, everything is going to be okay! We’re all going to get this statue out of this big ol’ hole in the ground and we’re going to restore peace between the Romans and the Greeks and we’re going to save the world! Yeah, of course, that wouldn’t be the way it happened. Percy and Annabeth get themselves into an impossible situation and they literally FALL INTO TARTARUS! They fall into the inescapable part of the Underworld…and then the book ends. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read this. I thought for sure it was a joke. I kept turning the pages, hoping there was more. I am seriously counting down the days for The House of Hades this fall. I need my Percabeth back!

1. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling

Of course this is number one. This isn’t so much as a single cliffhanger; its more of a….how dare you leave us with such a defeated feeling and now we have to wait for the last book? The Half Blood Prince was released in July of 2006 and we didn’t get Deathly Hallows until July of 2007. A whole year of utter pain and agony, waiting to find out what happened next. And J.K. Rowling is amazing; she doesn’t reveal ANYTHING. No spoilers, no snippets, no sneak peeks. She just releases the title and the title doesn’t tell us anything. Half Blood Prince ends Dumbledore’s death, Hogwarts torn apart, the revelation that Snape is still a Death Eater (I mean, as far as we know) and just KILLED Dumbledore, and that Harry has to find these Horcruxes, which can be anywhere in the entire world, and its just…its like Empire Strikes Back all over again. You just feel so defeated. Dumbledore is dead, and he’s the head of the Order of the Phoenix…and the Horcrux they just went to go and find is a fake, and Snape…Snape is a BAD guy and everyone is just so sad and Harry just broke up with Ginny, and its just sad, sad, sad feelings all around. But its also excited and anxious feelings too because Harry isn’t coming back, and he’s going to go hunting for these Horcruxes and he’s going to go hunting for Snape and Voldemort and its just SO EPIC.
