Young Adult Lit Authors at San Diego Comic Con!

Hey guys :D

So I know that I’m not usually a “newsy” type of blog, buy but I thought I would share this because my blog is so primarily on young adult literature. There are a TON of YA authors heading out to San Diego CC next weekend and I wanted to share all the different panels and autograph signings that would be going on so that those of you who are going can check it out!

I’m going to try and do these with other big events as well, prostate big conventions or book festivals, even if they are NOT in California.

I just…I get to go to these events all the time, and meet authors and I know that not everyone else gets that chance. So I figured if I can help in any way, even if its just to make the information availalble to you guys so you know that it is going on, well then I might as well.

So here we go, all the authors at Comic Con, what panels they’ll be in and when they’ll be signing :) You’re welcome!

Be warned: the panels/autograph signings that I am sharing are ONLY for YA books, movies and related! You need to visit comic-con.org for FULL schedules!

There could be more panels/autograph signings/etc. at Comic Con for YA authors but this is as far as I know, based on the Comic Con Schedule. Other authors I know have said they will be there but are probably doing signings at private booths.

I will update this list if I find out more information!

And everyone have fun at Comic Con!

New Catching Fire Teaser Trailer!

I swear, information pills this is my last post of the day haha.

There’s just so MUCH going on.

Today, pharmacy the official first released teaser trailer for the second Hunger Games installment, Catching Fire, debuted tonight at the MTV Movie Awards.

Here it is for your enjoyment:

What I liked:

I liked that they included Gale’s whipping scene (sorry, spoilers, get over it), because I believe its a HUGE , pivotal moment for Katniss and the way she feels about things. I liked the Victory Tour and I liked the exchange between Prim and Katniss, although I don’t think you really get to see how Prim is growing up until Mockingjay.

What I Didn’t Like:

Pretty much everything else. I know that we saw a lot of background stuff with Seneca Crane and the gamemakers in Hunger Games and I liked that, it added more to the movie. However, the added bits of President Snow and Plutarch Heavensbee…it just seemed like TOO much. Like I feel as if we’re going to find out that Katniss is going back in the games before she does and it doesn’t really seem like we’re going to get that punch in the gut surprise. But I don’t know.

The thing is, I wasn’t a HUGE fan of the City of Bones teaser trailer when it first came out. I was like, OH GOD THEY RUINED MY BABY! But then I saw the official full length trailer at WonderCon and it looks BOMBTASTIC and I can’t wait for the movie. So…

I’ll wait for a full length Catching Fire trailer to fully judge haha.

The 2nd Annual Harry Potter Roller Skating Night!

59982_10200395897082941_235834695_n

For those of you who do not know (which is probably good chunk of you!), mind I am part of one of the BEST groups EVER in the history of all groups: The Los Angeles Dumbledore’s Army. We are a 21-and over Los Angeles/Southern California based Harry Potter group. I joined in October of 2011 and have had some of the BEST times with them. So many people associate Harry Potter with children but what they fail to realize is that the kids that read Harry Potter when it first came out (like me), are adults now! And there isn’t much out there geared toward us adults…so voila, the LADA! The group has existed for five years now and has put on some seriously cool events, like Avengers de Mayo (a HUGE party where we went and saw the Avengers and ate superhero themed food and superhero games) and a Hunger Games Capitol party to celebrate the release of Hunger Games last month. We’ve had Quidditch picnics, HP birthday teas, game nights, pub night and pub crawls, Triwizard tournaments, beach days and so much.

But a HUGE event for us is the Harry Potter Roller Skating Night. We held out first one last April, in 2012, and over 650 people showed up! It was fantastic! So, of course, we had to do it again this year, and yesterday, we partied hard at the Moonlight Rollerway in Glendale.

555265_473205756080535_1478375011_n

And it was a blast once again! I got my Ravenclaw tie out, put my Ravenclaw bow in, tied on my super awesome Ravenclaw tutu and prepared myself for a seriously awesome night of Harry Potter fun.

There were raffle prizes, and every person who paid to come, whether they were a spectator or a skater, was automatically entered in the raffle. Prizes included all kinds of handmade Harry Potter merch, like bows, cat toys, earrings, Harry Potter candy, and more.

There was a ton of music to skate and dance to, from music familar to us Potterheads from the movies to some Wizard Wrock favorites to top 40 Muggle hits as well. Even though I chose to skip out on the skating this year (last year, I could barely move for days…wasn’t really anxious to do that again haha), I had fun, hanging out with all my friends, and dancing around in my tutu, which got a TON of compliments. Here’s a picture of me, in my tutu.

IMG_4489

If you’re interested in purchasing a super awesome tutu like this (in ANY colors, though I do have a ton of Ravenclaw colors left), please leave a comment below or email me at whatanerdgirlsays@gmail.com!

There was also a TON of other super cool stuff to buy as well, like BUTTERBEER!

photo-3

If you’ve never tried Butterbeer, you are TOTALLY missing out! Its delicious stuff. You can buy it in the bottle by Flying Cauldron here on Amazon.

You could also buy a TON of handmade Harry Potter stuff as well!

photo-2

This is Miss Tanya, who runs Heroine Habit on Etsy, where she makes all kinds of nerdy themed bows (or any bows, really, she’ll make custom orders!). Here is an example of some of the bows she was selling last night. Also, in the picture above, I’m wearing a Ravenclaw bow she made!

photo-1

She also just custom made me an Angels bow for me to rock at the baseball games!

photo

Definitely check out her store, she has some of the CUTEST bows and headbands :)

Also rocking the vendor tables at Harry Potter Roller Skate Night was SuzAnne and her super AWESOME Sugar Dukes Magical Sweets candy.

photo-8

She makes Harry Potter themed candy, and trust me, its delicious stuff. She gave me a Dill Pickle Barrel, basically a root beer barrel but in the flavor of a pickle. Okay, I know that sounds crazy, right? But it was actually SUPER delicious. Here is some of the stuff she was selling last night:

photo

DELICIOUS stuff, check out her Facebook page here to find out when or where or how you can get your hands on some :)

Also, the Los Angeles Dumbledore’s Army was selling some stuff of our own. Last Saturday, we had a massive craft day and made ALL kinds of Harry Potter wares for the event.

photo-5

Yup, thats a Harry Potter pillow :) I helped to make these, and by helped, I mean I ironed and helped pin and stuffed! But hey, I helped!

photo-7

We also had a ton of handmade stuff as well, like crocheted little bags in house colors, crocheted hair bows and hair ties. We had house themed earrings and nerdy doggie collars and cat bandanas. We even had SERIOUSLY awesome Harry Potter cat toys (which were tested and approved by my friend Kendall’s cat, Lucius). If you guys are interested in any of these, send a message my way, comment below, and I’ll let you know how to get your hands on them!

Also my mom was there as well, showing off her new dolls as well.

534393_398784626895674_1136806018_n

She’s also made Ginny, Neville, Fred and George, and more. She’s also working on making some Doctor Who ones, Hunger Games, Mortal Instruments, etc. and she’s willing to take CUSTOM orders as well, so check out her facebook page, Ellie’s Quirky CreationsHERE.

Oh yeah! There was also SKATING TOO!

photo-6

It was SO hard to get a clear picture because there were SO many many many people and ya’ll were skating SO fast! But there were a TON of people there, and everyone looked like they were having a great time. There were great costumes: a seriously intimidating Death Eater, a couple cute Hedwigs going around, an entire posse of A Very Potter Musical kids, Sirius Black and tons of people rocking the good ‘ol Hogwarts ties.

photo-2

A Very Potter Musical people completely with Ron Weasley, Voldemort, Draco Malfoy, Ginny Weasley, Hermione Granger and supermegafoxyawesaomehot Harry Potter :)

Lastly, we had a *secret* special guest, miss Ellie Darcy-Alden, who plays young Lily Evans in Deathly Hallows Part 2. She also had a part in the Doctor Who Christmas Special, The Snowmen. She was a super lovely and sweet girl, and looked like she had a great time as well :)

photo-4

All in all, it was a GREAT night and I’m sure everyone who attended had a great time, because it looked like they all had a fun time :) I can’t wait til next year ;)

Much thanks goes out to Miss Adrienne, the leader of our group, and to everyone who helped to put this together (hey, that includes me too!). It was a great event and I can’t wait to do it all again next year :)

New Hunger Games: Catching Fire Stills

So tonight at the MTV Movie Awards, visit we’ll finally get our glimpse at the first trailer for the second installment in Suzanne Collin’s Hunger Games trilogy, Catching Fire.

Yay!

I’m not a huge fan of the MTV Movie Awards, I watched them pretty religiously when I was a teenager but now, not so much but I will sit through the entire show just to see the trailer for Catching Fire. And also to see if they show anything City of Bones because I’m a crazy person like that.

But to keep us nice and excited til the release of the new trailer, I’ve brought to you five new stills that have been released in the last couple of days.

Warning: if you have NOT read the book, there will be spoilers ahead.

533689_654283854588269_1245515712_n

Is it wrong that I’m happy they are keeping Gale’s whipping scene in? Its just SUCH a huge moment for him, and for Katniss, and for the way she feels about Panem and the government.

536990_490838264305024_752156877_n

Now, Hypable claims this is a still from the Victory Tour, but it looks more like pictures from the Tribute Parade for the 75th annual Hunger Games, since (those of you who have read the book know) Katniss and Peeta go into the Hunger Games once more.

Catching-Fire-Plutarch-Snow-474x316

President Snow and Plutarch Heavensbee. Plutarch is the new Gamemaker, the head of the Hunger Games, after Seneca Crane’s alluded demise in the first movie.

katniss-hunger-games-catching-fire-619x234

Not sure what’s happening here, or what just happened but Katniss goes through a LOT in this book between the Victory Tour, her engagement to Peeta, Gale’s whipping, going back into the games a second time, so much so there could be anything that could make her look this upset.

katniss-prim-the-hunger-games-catching-fire

You can tell Prim is growing up. Obviously this is a moment between the sisters, an upset moment. Maybe after Gale’s whipping, maybe Katniss has just found out she’s going back in…but look at Prim’s reaction…she’s not a little girl anymore, she’s grown up.

I’m pretty excited about all the stills so far, and I’m excited to watch the trailer tonight.

Let me know what you think of the stills! I’ll post the trailer as soon as its posted online :)

Up-to-Date Divergent Casting :)

So a book that has caught my attention in the last year has been Divergent by Veronica Roth. I read it last year, buy a few days before the sequel Insurgent came out. I always get lucky with that haha. But anyway, medications its a REALLY good book and I chose it right away for my book club and my friends enjoyed it a lot. I wasn’t surprised in the slightest when it was announced as a movie.

9780062024039_custom-6b2ed0b3ebbd559fe8a0527ec3f7d4ca7aecf427-s6-c10

I’ve been trying to keep up with Divergent casting as it comes in, case and I’ve found that the best way to do that is through Veronica Roth’s own blog, because she’s going to have the most legit information.

So to help you all out, I’ve made this post with the most updated list of actors and actresses playing characters in the movie.

images

Shailene Woodley is also known for playing Amy on The Secret Life of an American Teenager. She’s also been cast as Hazel Grace in John Green’s best selling novel, The Fault in Our Stars, and as Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spiderman 2.

NOT what I pictured at all but…I think she can pull it off.

208665_305131729613558_115851163_n_thumb[2]

Theo has been on shows like Downton Abbey and Bedlam and is the title character in the CBS show, Golden Boy.

I find it seriously amusing that a 28 year old actor is playing 17/18 year old Four. I think he’ll do a good job but its just funny. He’s very good looking though, so you can’t go wrong with that.

164917_315965811863483_2018181291_n

Mekhi has been in several movies and TV shows, most notably ER. Ray has been in movies like King Arthur, both G.I. Joe movies and both Thor movies.

I REALLY like these two. Ray Stevenson is just perfect for Marcus.

1363284973_3717_Jai

Jai was in movies like Jack Reacher and A Good Day to Die Hard, and was on the television show, Spartacus.

I really like this casting as well. As long as they kind of “rough” him up a bit. He looks like he could play a bully pretty well and that’s what Eric totally is.

599702_308136642646400_2032741760_n[4]

Kate Winslet is most notably from movies like Titanic and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, among many many many others.

I didn’t see this one coming at all. There were rumors like crazy for it but I was like, no way. And now its for sure? Well, I think she can pull it off

Divergent-casts

Maggie Q can also be seen in the title role on the CW show, Nikita. Ansel can be seen later in the reboot of the classic horror film, Carrie. Zoe Kravitz takes the plunge into YA dystopian world like her dad Lenny Kravitz (Cinna in Hunger Games) and can also be seen as Angel in XMen: First Class.

Its funny, because these three aren’t even HUGE characters (though I would say maybe Christina is), these are the perfect castings for me. Seriously, they announced all three of these at the same time and I was like OHMYGOD perfect. These three are just…wonderful.

BGO7vb3CMAEJk9k.jpg-large

All of these guys are kind of newbies. They’ve all been in small roles, and various shorts so these roles are pretty big for them, especially Lloyd-Hughes and Christian.

Not sure about these guys yet, kind of have to see how they act haha. I always pictured Al a lot bigger but that could just be me.

75009_480026882052789_1509895816_n

Amy Newbold as Molly. Amy has also had roles on Chicago Fire and Boss, and is more known for being a casting associate for a TON of movies. She’s super pretty, and not what I pictured as Molly, but maybe you picture the characters you dislike as ugly haha.

MV5BMjI0OTY4MDQ5NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMzc3NDMxNw@@._V1._SX214_CR0,0,214,314_

Miles Teller as Peter. He was most recently in the Footloose reboot and also in 21 and Over. Not what I pictured as Peter in the slightest but I’m an optimistic person haha.

And it was just announced that:

ashley_judd_olympus_premiere_a_p

Ashley Judd as Natalie Prior, Tris’s mom. I love Ashley Judd, though she’s kind of disappeared off the planet lately, except for Lifetime movies haha.

*       *       *      *      *

So thats the most updated list of the cast as of right now :) Filming as already begun, just last week, and I am so insanely excited for this movie next year, just as I’m excited for the third and final installment in the actual trilogy. It doesn’t even have a name yet! But its going to be exciting!

Also, next week is the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books at USC (University of Southern California) and Veronica Roth will be there and I am so hoping to be able to meet her, before she gets TOO famous after this movie comes out haha. Other authors include Orson Scott Card, Cassandra Clare (oh you bet I’m there again), Sarah Dessen, Morgan Matson, Kami Garcia, Gayle Forman, Lauren Oliver, Margaret Stohl, Jaclyn Moriarty, and so so so so many more. Check it out here.

What do you guys think of the cast so far? As always, let me know in the comments!

Hollingsworth v Perry and United States v. Winsor…and Books

Now, check my blog is about being a nerd…and mainly focuses on my love of books, and especially my big support for young adult literature. I keep most of my opinions and beliefs that are separate from books away from my blog, in order to maintain a balance, and not alienate any of my readers.

But there’s one point that I have to bring up.

symbols_hrc_equality

In the next couple days, the Supreme Court of the United States will be addressing two very important case: the case of Prop 8, and the case of DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act).

For those of you who don’t know, Prop 8 was a proposition passed in California, the state in which I live, in 2008, that prevents same-sex marriages from being legal. This proposition barely passed, and was a proposition that I was severely against.

The Defense of Marriage Act, also known as DOMA, as passed into law in September of 1996, stating that a legal marriage is a binding between one man and one woman, therefore ruling out the legality of same-sex marriage.

Both of these are being fought on the basis that they are unconstitutional and will be the subjects of the two cases presented to the Supreme in the next two days (March 26th and 27th).

Before I get into personal feelings, let’s talk about this for a moment.

These are so important. You know all those court cases that we talk about in history classes, the ones you don’t pay attention to because you just don’t realize how important they are? This is it. So many of these cases have affected our lives today, even if we don’t take the time to realize it. And the next two days, the next two cases, they are going to define us once again.

And I hope and I wish, and I hope that we can make the right decision on this. This isn’t about personal beliefs. This isn’t about religion. This is about what the Bible says. For one thing, the constitution has always said: separation of church and state. Freedom of religion. We cannot deny a group of people the right to marry because our beliefs and because our bibles or religions tell us this is so, because religion doesn’t belong in the government, and it never has. If you believe that same-sex marriages are immoral, fine. I think you’re completely wrong, but that’s your opinion. However, this opinion is NOT a valid reason for restricting someone’s rights.

Let’s also recall the 14th amendment, and the Equal Protection Clause…that one cannot be denied the right that someone else has. Again, no matter what your personal beliefs are, you cannot deny the RIGHT of same-sex couples to marry if opposite sex couples can. Its against this very amendment that is written into our Constitution, our highest law.

Now, I’m not trying to really present an argument here for you; that’ll be the job to be done tomorrow in court. I’m just presenting you with TWO different pieces of concrete evidence of the illegitimacy of both Prop 8 and DOMA, and how they back my belief in marriage equality.

Thats the technical aspect of it, the academic and evidence backed version of it.

But I also am very passionate about marriage equality.

Partly because, I am bisexual. And maybe you don’t like that, or maybe you think I’m making it up for attention (which, by the way, I’m not). And let me make this perfectly clear: My boyfriend Jon and I have been together for five years…and I’m 115% in love with him, and perfectly happy with him and one day, we’ll get married and have babies who love music like him and books like me. But I am attracted to girls, as much as I am attracted to boys and if for some crazy, impossible reason, it didn’t work out with Jon, I could see myself dating a girl. And the fact that my right to marry a girl is being denied…well it pisses me off.

And I have a ton of friends who are gay or lesbian, a TON of them…absolutely wonderful people. So many of them are in loving and healthy relationships, relationships just like you or me. And the fact that they can’t get married…yeah it pisses me off.

And, lets remember, this blog is about books and about my nerd things. I’m obsessed with my books, I’m obsessed with literature, especially of the young adult genre.

Alec Lightwood and Magnus Bane from the Mortal Instruments.

Aline Penhallow and Helen Blackthorn from the Mortal Instruments

Will Grayson and Tiny Cooper from Will Grayson, Will Grayson.

Pippa Cross and Felicity Worthington from A Great and Terrible Beauty.

Albus Dumbledore from Harry Potter.

Patrick and Brad from The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Kurt Hummel and Blaine Anderson from Glee.

Santana Lopez and Britney Pierce from Glee.

Canton Everett Delaware III from Doctor Who, Series 6.

Honestly I could go on and on. There are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender characters everywhere. And they’ve all had to go through the difficulties of accepting who they are. Alec Lightwood can’t come to terms with the fact that he is gay, and it takes him three whole books to even admit that he has a relationship with Magnus. Aline is unsure of the way she feels, and kisses Jace to see if she’s attracted to boys. Will Grayson and Tiny Cooper both deal with coming out as gay, in two different ways. Pippa and Felicity, especially Felicity since Pippa is technically dead, have to deal with the fact that they are in love with each other, in a Victorian age when that was DEFINITELY not accepted. Patrick, in Perks, has to hide his relationship with Brad, because Brad is afraid to come out. Kurt, Blaine, Santana, and Britney all have a hard time dealing with their relationships in Glee. Even short time companion, Canton, in Doctor Who, deals with the fact that he isn’t allowed to be in the FBI and have a male companion.

Authors, especially young adult authors, are including LGBT characters in their novels because this is a very important issue of our generation. Marriage equality, equality no matter what sexual orientation you are…this is a huge matter of this age. And kids, teens, young adults…we’re not stupid, we are aware of this and many of us are fighting for this. And authors are creating characters that are like us, or like people we know, characters that we can relate to .

All of these characters, and more, have not only furthered my belief in the equality of all people, no matter their gender or sexual orientation, but has given me the courage to be who I AM. If my friends can be open and honest and proud of who they are, if my favorite characters (who are like my friends to me) can eventually be open and honest about who they are and people love and accept them, then so can I.

And sure, we’re never going to be able to change everyone’s minds. We just can’t. Its been nearly 50 years since the Civil Rights Act was passed and we still have racism. Of course we do. And its wrong, wrong, wrong but there’s that. People are allowed to have opinions even if its wrong. And people are always going to have their opinions on same-sex marriage. But it boils down to this.

It doesn’t matter your personal moral or religious beliefs. It doesn’t matter if you think same sex marriage is morally wrong or not. It doesn’t matter if same sex marriage is against your religion. Because religion doesn’t dictate law, not in this country, not ever. This is the very foundation of which this country was founded upon. There is a separation of church and state in the laws, and we have laws requiring us to extend the same rights to every single person, no matter what. And no, these laws won’t FORCE churches to marry same sex couples, and it won’t FORCE schools to teach of it school. That is ignorant babble from misinformed people who are bent on keeping same sex couples from marriage.

Equal rights for everyone. I believe it. Alec and Magnus, Santana and Brittany, Blaine and Kurt, Will and Tiny, Felicity and Pippa, Canton, Dumbledore, Aline and Helen, we all believe it.

The process may take time, especially when it comes to Prop 8, but I know I will be waiting anxiously and hopeful for the right decision to be made.

And like I said, I know this isn’t normally the kind of thing that I post. I normally keep my political and religious (or lack thereof, in my case) out of my posts but I feel like this has an importance, especially in my passion for books and my belief in its life saving qualities.

If there’s one thing that I can honestly say that I’ve learned from books (and there’s a whole novel larger than War and Peace that could describe what I’ve learned from books), is the idea of acceptance, tolerance and equality. I would say…I would go out on a limb and say 100% of the books that I have read have had some measure of preaching equality, some more than others. Harry Potter showed us it hugely, Mortal Instruments, Hunger Games, Percy Jackson, Jane Austen, Star Wars, and on and on.

And I have taken this to heart. These books have taught me so much about life: how to love, how to be a friend, how to trust, how to respect, how to be responsible, how to be a GOOD person, and how to accept everyone, even if you don’t particularly like them. Books have taught me that everyone deserves to be treated equally, and I have extended this into my life.

So…in conclusion to this super long blog post…WhatANerdGirlSays is about being a nerd…and a big chunk of my nerd life comes from books. Books are my life, my love, my passion and my dreams. And books have taught me the firm, firm belief I have in equality, in all things in life, and that makes WhatANerdGirlSays an equality zone. And we’ll be waiting, in anticipation and complete hope, for the right decision to be made.
