Blogger Spotlight: Jackie from Stardust and Shadowhunters

One of the best parts about running this blog is having the ability to meet some really cool people, nurse and some of the coolest people that I have met have led me to really cool blogs. I’ve said it before, no one’s blog is 100% original but everyone’s voices are different so there are blogs that I love to read because I love the writer, and I love the passion that they show for what they are writing. They are fun and interesting to read and they inspire me to get better and better in my blog.

So I decided to do a feature (inspired by Megan at the Nerdy Girlie’s Geek Girls Gab), where I profile the bloggers that I love. Not only do I get to find out more about them, but I also get to share them with you guys! Most of the bloggers that I follow are like me, nerd girls, fan girls and they enjoy the same things as me, and you! Every blogger that I profile is one that is super important to me and I urge you to check them out!

If you are interested in being featured on the Blogger Spotlight, feel free to contact me, please! I would love to hear from you, to feature you on the blog and to help spread the word about it!

Sara: Tell me a Little Bit About Yourself:

Jackie: I’m 21, and I drink a lot of coffee. I’m a freelance web designer/developer in Pittsburgh, but I’m from Youngstown, born and raised. I’ve been a monster and makeup artist at Canfield Scaregrounds Haunted House for 8 years this year, and I’m going to the Tom Savini SFX Makeup School in February. I’m also in the process of writing a book. I’m a crafty lady with a knitting machine and I make a lot of cool things. Some of said “cool things” include jewelry, tiny book charms, and scarves. I’m a bit of a hybrid nerd, because I’m a nerd of many feathers. I’m in more fandoms than I can count, but I’m also rather tech-savvy. I get it from my mom, who is a dorky intellectual as well. I also collect comic books and graphic novels – mostly horror-themed. I’m a rather nifty person and I love meeting new people, so feel free to message me!

Sara: Tell me about your blog:

Jackie: Stardust and Shadowhunters is my multifandom blog, despite the name. It’s a play on the phrase “We are but dust and shadow” by Horace, which is used in the Shadowhunter world (Mortal Instruments, Infernal Devices, etc). My blog is relatively new, but I can promise lots of pretty fabulous content in the near future involving news and my opinions on all my fandoms (Shadowhunters, Doctor Who, Supernatural, Sherlock, Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit, Harry Potter, ASOIAF/Game of Thrones, anything by John Green, Hemlock Grove, Warm Bodies, Hunger Games, Beautiful Creatures, Horror movies, Comic books, Zombies, and more!), as well as some goodies (ringtones, fanmixes, etc.) for you all.

Sara: What inspired you to start your blog?

Jackie: I’m a writer by nature, and I haven’t been doing much writing lately. Why not write about things I love to people who love the same things? I don’t go to many events that I can blog about, but I have a talent for making nifty things that other people can use, such as graphics, ringtones and playlists. I’m also an opinionated human. Blogging gives me a chance to get my opinions out there.

Sara: What is your favorite nerd memory?

Jackie: Due to the tragic lack of events on my side of the US, I don’t get to meet many celebrities who aren’t in bands. Despite my hideous lack of celeb cred, my favorite nerd memory would definitely have to be my very recent trip to NYC. We skipped the generic tourist traps in favor of the discovering the weirder side of the city. We went to Obscura (the store from Oddities) and bought strange things and found as many fandom-related landmarks as we could. We visited the Literary Walk even went to the Ripley’s Museum.

Sara: What are you most looking forward to, as far as new books/movies/etc?

Jackie: City of Bones comes out in less than a week! I’m pretty excited for City of Heavenly Fire as well. November 2013 is going to be a pretty fantastic month for the nerd community as well, with Catching Fire, Sherlock, Supernatural, etc. I also think I’m going to enjoy Vampire Academy, but I plan on rereading the books before I watch the movies.

mini_books

Sara: As my blog is mostly about books and reading, what are some of your favorite books or authors to read?

Jackie: Cassandra Clare, John Green, J. K. Rowling, George R. R. Martin, Garth Nix…. The list is endless. I’m also rather fond of classics, like Great Expectations and Wuthering Heights.

Sara: What are some of your favorite blogs to follow?

Jackie: Obviously, whatanerdgirlsays! I also enjoy City Of Shadowhunters, FanGirlFeeels, I Am Divergent, ifandomscollide, NovelReality, YA On My Mind , and The Librarian Who Doesn’t Say Shhh.

I’m also rather fond of a web comic called Questionable Content, written by Jeph Jacques. Check it out! Just make sure you read it from the beginning.

Sara: Who is your fictional crush (what, we’re nerd girls, we all have one!)

Jackie: Most definitely Will and Jace Herondale. I’m a sucker for intelligence paired with killer combat skills and a sense of self-loathing that only a Herondale boy can be born with. (:

Jackie’s mom is a nerd too!

Meeting Cassie Clare for the second time at LA Times Book Fest.

Sara: Tell me a Little Bit About Yourself:

Sylvia: Hey guys, My name is Sylvia, I am 22 years old living in Los Angeles California. I write a blog called FangirlFeeels, I love YA books, weird Indy Folk music, I have a huge love for art and I want to travel the world. I have always loved reading books But I just recently came out of the “Fangirl Closet”.. As I like to call it. Reading books was not the cool thing to do when I was growing up so I hid my obsession until my Junior Year of High School, when one of my classmates was reading Twilight. Then she introduced me to the Fangirl World (AKA The INTERNET) and now I’m Here!

Sara: Tell me about your blog:

Sylvia: FangirlFeeels Keeps up with all Fandom News and updates, Posts “Follow me Around” Event Vlogs & Book Reviews

Its a great site to make friends and have on going discussions about book theories and such. FangirlFeeels is a never ending Book Club.

Meeting Jamie Campbell Bower at WonderCon 2013

Sara: What inspired you to start your blog?

Sylvia:  I had just finished reading Delirium by Lauren Oliver and all these questions were racing through my head. No one I knew had read the book, so I went on the internet and looked at every book review on Youtube. I then I realized that I could be doing the exact same thing! I wanted to connect with these people and talk about books and fangirl on the internet!   As I said before, Growing up, reading was not the cool thing to do so a lot of my friends do not read & don’t understand my constant obsession with these characters.I wanted a place to talk about books and everything associated with them with other readers who understood me. I was chatting with a couple of Fangirls a few months ago we were talking about starting up a blog thinking about names and stuff, I was jokingly spitting out names like “Feels.com”.  It wasn’t until a few weeks after when I was starting my own Blog that I came up with FangirlFeeels.com.

Sara: What is your favorite nerd memory?

I Have been obsessed with The Hunger Games for quite sometime and I lent my copies to Tatiana (City of Shadowhunters) she fell in love with it right away. We signed up for The HOB on FB to be one of 400 fans to camp out for the Premiere of The Hunger Games movie! We got the email that said we were chosen to attend. The day before we were on the official The Hob Facebook talking to other campers.

We all met in the Starbucks at LA Live and I instantly felt at home! That first night we Camped out on the streets of Downtown LA. These 22 Fans became my family for the next 3 days. We slept on the ice cold cement, Talked about everything THG, Met the Cast, and saw the movie together!  We are still really close, Paulina (I Am Divergent) has become one of my closest friends. This event brought so many people together.

Paulina, a big Divergent fan, claims herself as part of the Amity Faction.

“My faction is amity so I decided to gather up my red and yellow wardrobe and take some amity pictures! Also features some Amity peace bread and a necklace with the faction symbol.”

Sara: Tell me a Little Bit About Yourself:

Paulina: Hi I’m Paulina! I run IamDivergent.com (a Divergent fansite) and I love books, movies, food and people. I love Divergent because it rocks (ok that’s not the only reason but bear with me, trying to keep this “short” &  “little” ;) ). I have always been an overall fangirl and I’m loving every part of it. I’m 17 and I live in So Cal and I’m trying to make life as fun as it can be. Fun facts! I was born in Mexico and I play the oboe. Woo!

Sara: Tell me about your blog:

Paulina: I am Divergent is a Divergent fansite that follows the latest news & updates related to the Divergent trilogy. (You can get your daily dose of Tris, Four and the rest of the gang at the site!). It is also a good source of material, the site features information about Divergent (Book & Movie), Insurgent, Allegiant, Free Four, Useful Links and more. Basically all you need if you’re feeling Divergent!

Sara: What inspired you to start your blog?

525178_4250631839093_1788813142_n

This is me meeting Veronica Roth. That wasn’t the first time I met her, but it was the first time I could get my book signed and act like a foolish fangirl. I didn’t have to “act cool” thank goodness. I’m bad at that.

Paulina: When I read Divergent I immediately fell in love. I loved it so much, everything about it, and I wanted so badly to be a part or to be involved in the world of Divergent somehow. I had followed fansites for other series in the past and I loved every part of them. I would watch how the fansites would bring people together with common interests and passions and how useful and genuine they fansites all were. I suddenly realized how much I wanted to have my own fansite, how much I wanted to do that for others, especially for a series like Divergent that I fell in love with so strongly. I realized there were already other really great and amazing Divergent fansites out there, but I wanted to be a part of it so badly that I just went for it. And I’m so glad I did! Everyone has been so welcoming and kind. Being a part of a fandom, especially this one, is one of the best things that has ever happened to me in life.

Sara: What is your favorite nerd memory?

Paulina: My favorite nerd memory is when I camped out for the Hunger Games premiere in March last year. That was basically my introduction to nerd-life. I was a noob when I went but I quickly realized I belonged there (I was with my people!). Everyone at school told me I was crazy for camping out in the streets of Downtown LA for a movie, or for waiting in line for hours just to get a glimpse at the awesome people who brought the book to life but that’s when I realized that they’re not as cool as us. Nerd life is much more fun and I made so many life long friendships at the camp out I was surprised I hadn’t tried it sooner. That will forever be my favorite memory because it introduced me to this awesome fun life I am living now.

420166_2582549578079_543495691_n

The third and fourth pictures were at the hunger games camp out. A group of us that met through facebook met up on Saturday night, March 10th, 2012 (yes, I remember the exact date) at Starbucks then went across the street and started the line for the camp out at 1 am. We stayed up all night till we could “officially” begin camping out at 6 am on Sunday. We were the first 22 in line, group 22, and we are still really close friends to this day!

Sara: What are you most looking forward to, as far as new books/movies/etc?

Paulina: ALLEGIANT & DIVERGENT MOVIE (AAAH!)

Sara: As my blog is mostly about books and reading, what are some of your favorite books or authors to read?

Paulina: Divergent (duh), The Hunger Games, Twilight, The Host. I haven’t read The Mortal Instruments yet but I already know I’ll love it. So might as well put it on the list.

302773_3512778473220_642936880_n

This picture is of my mom, my dad, my cousin and me camping out for Breaking Dawn Part 2! I love that picture because it shows that I’m not the only nerd in the family. We’re all just and crazy and fun and loving and nerdy! A fangirl family!

Sara: What are some of your favorite blogs to follow?

Paulina: WhataNerdGirlSays! ;) FangirlFeeels, CityofShadowhunters, SmittenKitchen & 101Cookbooks (i’m a foodie too).

Sara: Who is your fictional crush (what, we’re nerd girls, we all have one!)

Paulina: Is this even a question, um… FOUR. I don’t usually crush on the main character, i’m a side character gal, but Four stole my heart! And Theo James who will play him is so perfect. I can’t wait to see him as Four!

One Last Word from Paulina:

Shout out to Sara (whatanerdgirlsays) who is awesome! Thanks for including me in this!

Finding Your Own Voice

In a little less than a month, sick my blog will be celebrating its one year birthday. I’ve had the opportunity to really have fun with my blog, to make it my own. I love this blog. I love writing it. I’m not going to lie, sometimes I bring it up on my web browser just to stare it. I am so proud of it. I love working on it.

I’ve also had the opportunities to meet some really awesome bloggers and make friends with them, and cowrite with them and we all help each other out.

I was talking to a fellow blogger today about copycats and trying to be original in your blog and all that.

And I really came to the conclusion that you can’t really be original. Its nearly impossible, especially when you’re running a nerd girl, or fandom blog.

For instance, last night, I posted about the new international City of Bones trailer. When I went to my reader (which is basically a feed where you can read the newest posts by all the blogs you follow), I saw that most of the blogs that I follow posted about it as well, and most of them posted it before me. And you know what? Didn’t really bother me.

I take some inspiration from a lot of different blogs. I didn’t know about The Broke and Bookish‘s Top Ten Tuesday when I came up with my own segment, The Tuesday Top Ten, but I wasn’t the least bit surprised that it already existed. I’ve also gotten some great ideas from them. I got the idea for my Convention Do’s and Don’t’s from Megan at The Nerdy Girlie, whose blog is primarily about the in’s and out’s of San Diego Comic Con. I’ve also been thinking of doing a blogger feature a bit similar to the one that she has done. I know that Shaina from The Urge to Write took inspiration from my weekly Book of the Week post to create her own. We all trade and inspire and so many of us enjoy the same things so we are going to be talking and writing about the same things.

I mean, did you really think when I created this blog that I thought I was creating something new? Of course I didn’t.

It all made me think of newspapers. Even though they’re becoming a dying breed, there are so many different newspaper publications, both in print and on the web. Though there are regional differences and all, the news often reports the same thing. Whether its a new law that Congress has passed, or that this team has won the Super Bowl or that bombs have gone off in this city, we report the same things. But we choose where we go to read these things for a reason. We choose the Los Angeles Times or the New York Times or The Boston Herald or Yahoo! News or whatever and we do it because there’s something about it that we prefer.

I like to think that this is the voice. The voice of that particular publication is what keeps you returning to it.

Jessica Brody, young adult author of books like The Karma Club and Unremembered, said at WonderCon that there are really only a handful of stories, there’s only ever been a handful of stories to tell. But every person is going to tell a different version of it. If you give two different writes the same story idea, you are still going to end up with two different stories…and this comes from the fact that they have two different voices. These voices come from our experiences, our likes and dislikes, our morals and beliefs. We all have different voices.

So true, my blog may not be the most innovative. It may not be a brand spanking new idea and yeah, sometimes I am going to report the same things as other blogs.

But I’m not really here to “give you the news”, you know what I mean? Sure, I post when new things come out, when new trailers for movies I want to see premiere or when someone is cast as a character in a movie, or things like that. But I don’t post these to beat other websites in breaking the news first or any of that. I post it because…I want to share this with other fans like me, and because I want to share my own personal reaction to that.

So that’s what makes my blog so special. This blog is MY voice. Its my reactions, my thoughts, my feelings. Sure you could have written about the exact same book as me, and maybe people will just throw our reviews aside, thinking they are the same but they aren’t. Because I wrote them with my opinions and reactions and you wrote them with yours.

And I like that, a lot. Because some of my favorite bloggers? They are doing the exact same thing as me, or something very nearly close to it. But I don’t find myself in competition with them. I don’t get mad if they post something before me or their post gets noticed and mine doesn’t. Because what’s the point in competing anyway? And also, our blogs can all be so similar and yet so different at the same time.

And my blog is here to write about my passions: reading and writing and just being a nerd, which usually comes from reading and writing. I don’t write to inform, I don’t write to really prove points, I don’t write to win awards. I write because I enjoy it and I feel like I have a lot to share. I write to talk about books, mostly, because I am so insanely  passionate about books.

So maybe I’m not 100% original. Maybe I’ll post the same thing as other people will.

But it’ll be in my voice. And my voice is unique from everyone else’s, just like your voice is unique. If you were to copy any one of my blog posts, I’d love to read it because I would love to hear YOUR take on it, your opinion, your voice :)

So I think that’s the most important thing. My goal in life is to be a writer, to make my living from writing, hopefully through novels, maybe even through this blog. But I’m not going to compete with anyone, or step people’s toes to get there. I will do it honestly and in my own way. People will want to read my blog or my novels because they are in MY VOICE, and that is what is going to get me where I need to go.

In the end, I think we should be focused on that: on writing our blogs in the best way that we know how and enjoying it. That’s the biggest requirement: Just enjoy writing your blog. Stop worrying about whether you have more followers or not, or whether you think people are copying you. Stop worrying about being “better” or “more popular” than other blogs. Make friends with these bloggers, do a blog swap, promote their blog and they’ll help you out too.

Now don’t get me wrong. Do continue to strive to get your blog noticed, to get your writing noticed. Do strive to become a better writer, and to bring people to your website to get it noticed. Do be aware of someone crossing the line between inspiration and plagiarism. Do something about plagiarism because that is wrong.

But have fun. Write because you enjoy it. Write because its something that you love to do. When you do that, you make your writing uniquely your own and if people love the way you write, if people love your voice, they’ll come back for more.

Win an Autographed Copy of Divergent by Veronica Roth!

Oh yes, viagra you read that right. You have found the magical page where you can enter to have a chance to win a SIGNED book, healing Divergent, find from the beautiful and talented author, Veronica Roth.

I had the most magnificent chance to meet Veronica Roth this past weekend at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. She was SUCH a sweetheart and she signed an extra copy of Divergent for me so that I could give it away to those of YOU who weren’t able to make this event, for whatever reason, like…I don’t know, being in another country!

Veronica Roth is the author of the dystopian trilogy: Divergent, Insurgent and Allegiant, which hits bookstores this October. It follows Tris in Chicago, in a future version of the world we know. The country has been divided into five factions, five virtues that the people found essential to keeping the peace: Abnegation (selflessness), Dauntless (courage/bravery), Candor (truth/honesty), Erudite (intelligence), and Amity (friendship). The story centers around Beatrice Prior, Tris, who has lived her in entire life in Abnegation, with her parents and her brother, Caleb. When her birthday comes up and it is time to pick her faction, she finds that she is compatible with more than faction, that she is divergent and that this is NOT a good thing to be, even worse than being factionless.

This is the book below. Its a BRAND new book, I bought it the day before I actually met her.

The inside, where Veronica signed is right here for you!
