Event Recap: Gallifrey One 2015 – The 26 Seasons of Gallifrey One!

HELLO EVERYONE!!! How are you doing this fine fine fine week? I hope you all had such a wonderful weekend and that you had a great Valentine’s Day whether you’re with someone or not. This weekend was my first Valentine’s Day solo in…7 years? Something like that…and you know what? I had an awesome time. Life is what you make of it!

This weekend I spent time at my FOURTH Gallifrey One Convention…the all Doctor Who convention taking place in Los Angeles every February for the past 26 years!

This is my favorite convention, information pills easily, ambulance of all time. I love everything about it. I love that its all about Doctor Who. I love that its personal and small and you get to interact with the guests all the time. I love that there are always super great guests and that everyone, from the big stars, to the sound people or costume designers, are all SO awesome to talk to. I meet a ton of people, sing karaoke til five am most nights, and just have a blast. I love that I get to see old friends that I don’t see very often or that I only get to see at Gallifrey One and I also get to make new ones as well. I literally look forward to this weekend all year long, I just have too much fun.

Day Zero

Yay for Lobby Con/Day Zero/Let’s Party Too Hard So We’re Sick the Rest of the Weekend. Sort of.

The con officially starts on Friday morning with programming and that such but there’s an unofficial Lobby Con, where people show up, check in to their hotel rooms, exchange ribbons, hang out, eat food, attend the ice cream social and karaoke to the break of dawn (but no, really…) My friends basically did all of the above, because we are all STOKED to finally be there!

10978708_792420537513475_5230255475489081787_n

The look that the registration lady gave me when I said I wanted this to be my name haha…

10968205_792420674180128_5733354687916567614_n

Its not Gallifrey One until we do karaoke. And Spice Girls karaoke. With our dear good friend, Richard Dinnick.

Richard Dinnick with me, and my friends Crystal and Ana

Day One

Its officially time for Gallifrey One! I was tired, maybe a tad bit hungover (but just a little!) but totally ready for the first day!

10991411_792420837513445_204068455257000280_n

10991260_792420974180098_5855201580766453904_n

This year’s Gallifrey One was HEAVY on Torchwood, the Doctor Who spin off show centered around Captain Jack Harkness. Above you see, Naoko Mori, who played Tosh on the show. She also played Nicola in Spice World, which made me fangirl a little ;)

11001843_792421077513421_7499603221915156681_n

The lovely and somehow incredibly incredibly sexy Burn Gorman, who played Owen on Torchwood.

1484449_792421190846743_295981557087229134_n

Yes, this is me creeping up on Naoko. I’m awesome like that.

10998647_792421390846723_8366177578245654205_n

Now creeping up on Eve Myles, who played Gwen Cooper on Torchwood. She also had an appearance on Doctor Who with the 9th Doctor and Rose Tyler back in series 1.

10957014_792421547513374_5272715563203743898_n

Well I’m in trouble….or I’m apparently the Dalek’s DUFF…

10991296_792421740846688_3856056856375602173_n

I’m ready for an adventure in the TARDIS. Always.

11009194_792421690846693_7306219297695516363_n

Don’t ask me if I know what I’m doing. I might have to lie to you and you know how I feel about lying.

10978527_792422117513317_3780609301672753063_n

Another night of karaoke. Not sure when this was taken but probably around the silly part of the night because we all look absolutely ridiculous!

Day Two

YES. Day 2!

10943718_792422720846590_3041889553975804944_n

I had brought my Ten dress (from Her Universe) but wasn’t sure I was going to wear it. I wore it last year and felt super ugly the whole time, and fat…but I decided to put it on and was SO SO glad I did. :) Sometimes its nice to feel cute in a little dress.

10982619_792422784179917_4302532683606005334_n

K-9!!!!!

11002592_792423430846519_7001328228874388377_n

Today was allllllll about John Barrowman, his sexiness, his dirtiness, his humor and just….hold on, I lost my train of thought because I started drooling again…

10502190_792423450846517_2825452580194912783_n

Just a  Minute! The half time show of the Masquerade (and honestly my favorite part), where a group of con guests get up and play a game called Just a Minute. They’re given a minute to speak on a particular subject without hesitation, deviation or repetition. Its HILARIOUS, and this year’s game was awesome.

1503438_792423560846506_9009261164047128719_n

The MASSIVELY adorable Sophie Aldred who played the companion Ace, in the 7th Doctor’s series.

10477259_792423787513150_7544334716601761221_n

Another night of super fun karaoke. We needed another picture with Richard in front of the TARDIS and this year…we got a little creative. I’m MASSIVELY in love with this photo.

10950691_792424100846452_9044936901643642892_n

Getting sleepy. But still having a TON of fun in karaoke.

Day Three

Last day :( Very sad but lots of exciting stuff including more John Barrowman AND pictures with John and Eve.

unnamed

John Barrowman being awesome ;) He plays Captain Jack Harkness as a companion to the Doctor in Doctor Who and as the head of Torchwood in…Torchwood.

unnamed-1

10991243_792424184179777_8493698416324599029_n

Yes. I am a creep. Get over it.

11006377_792424354179760_175339468612955886_n

Oooh yay, creeping on Burn Gorman.

10577000_792424384179757_406336449061069630_n

And while we’re at it, let’s creep on Nichelle Nichols, from Star Trek. *squeeeee*

10991084_792424597513069_3783983764137075902_n

So I went to go get my picture with John and Eve (which I was super nervous for, which made NO sense because I meet people all the time!) and I asked them if they could fight over me and this is what ensued. However, John was like, “We can do this better…” and the next picture was just…beautiful haha.

10986986_792424517513077_5263241227788623107_n

the best part is I got to keep BOTH of the pictures. I asked them both for a hug and they said yes and then John stops and goes, “Can I ask you a question?” and I say, sure, and he says “If I were to push you forward, would you bounce back up?” I kid you not. I had to take a couple seconds of laughing before I said,  “YES!” Boob jokes. I expect nothing less of John Barrowman.

10998312_792424707513058_5520258252308236357_n

Me and my dear friend Katie, who had an epic Donna Noble cosplay for the weekend!

10995657_792424730846389_2720851851319455046_n

My super awesome group for the weekend. We have all met through our love of Harry Potter and our membership in the Los Angeles Dumbledore’s Army and now we’ve taken that to our love of Doctor Who.

*       *      *      *       *       *       *

Now, I’m home and taking some time to relax and recover. I’m sad that its over but I’m glad to be home as well. Its always such a fun weekend and even though this is over, I’m already eagerly awaiting til next year.

A few notes about next year, that were talked about in the closing ceremonies, for those of you who are interested and maybe would like to attend!

Gallifrey One 27 will be taking place in February 12th, 13th and 14th of 2016 at the Mariott Hotel at LAX. Thank goodness. I know a lot of people were afraid they would be changing that part of the convention but thank goodness they aren’t.

Badges will go on sale on May 1st, 2015, and will remain at 90 dollars per weekend badge.

They will be eliminating the ability to transfer badges. Just too much work for them. However, you can buy badges that are “Guest of” and the name can be filled in at the actual con. Interesting change, not sure how I feel about it. I’ll be nervous when badges go on sale in May (though thankfully it gives me time to get the MONEY for the badge).

They also will be cutting the amount of weekend badges by a few hundred in order to reintroduce one day badges. I’m okay with this, I think it’ll be pretty awesome, though I plan on sticking with a full weekend badge.

Either way, so long Gallifrey One 2015, I had a blast as per usual. Each year I think, there’s no way next year will be better and I’m always proven wrong. I got to see old friends, meet new friends, cross off some Gallifrey One bucket list items and just had a ton of fun and created a ton of memories. I’m ready for Gallifrey One 2016.

Until then, I’ll just enjoy all the other super nerdy events that are coming my way soon ;) See you all soon!

2014: A What a Nerd Girl Says Recap of the Year!

Aw, here yes. The year has come to an end. It is officially 2015. What a crazy year its been.

I’ve always prided myself in the closeness that I’ve had with all of you. I share with you. I could just write about books and events and all of that and leave it at that. But I share with you all and I know that you guys know that its been a rough year for me. Its one of the hardest years I’ve had to deal with. Trying to figure who I am and what I want, help dropping out of school, approved finding a new job, losing the person I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life with, all of that. It was a hard year. There are times when I have to stop, take a deep breath and tell myself, Sara, its going to be okay. Its going to be okay.

But despite that, or perhaps because of it, I’m trying to find the good in all things. Not everything this year was terrible. In fact, there were many, many great things about this year, and that’s what this post is for, to remember all the amazing things I was able to experience this year.

And here’s to hoping that 2015 is even better.

JANUARY

1525327_492723457515188_1596697835_n

1560559_492722530848614_330256801_n

Got My Divergent Tattoo

1601007_497137527073781_1126369031_n

I had been wanting to get a Divergent tattoo for quite some time and I thought, now would be the time to do it, before the movie releases and it gets even bigger than it already is. So I did. And I love it.

I Met Penguins for the First Time

1625492_497405347046999_1652004559_n

Possibly one of the most amazing days in my entire life. I am massively obsessed with penguins and I spent the entire day giggling and smiling and just being all around happy. It was such an amazing day.

Got My Vampire Academy Tattoo

1662075_506904266097107_1822334390_n

I was so inspired by being around the Vampire Academy cast and fellow VA fans that I knew it was time to get my newest tattoo. Another addition to my body that I am so happy with. I know, its in the “wrong” spot. I couldn’t put it on the back of my neck because I already have something there!

Attended my Second Gallifrey One Convention

1620463_507417859379081_2047509524_n

Best. Convention. Ever. I will continue to go to this convention as long as I can get a badge to that thing. I met Arthur Darvill and Billie Piper, which was just straight up mind blowing, and I partied all night and I was even on my first ever convention panel. All in all, GREAT weekend.

Attended Jessica Brody’s ‘Unforgotten’ Release Party

1979491_513014752152725_1905313920_n

Always a good time to go and see Jessica Brody :) I was DYING to get my hands on this book and I went home and basically finished it that night.

Had an Amazing 26th Birthday Party

1969278_515399585247575_681438476_n

Met Willow Shields at the Catching Fire DVD Release!

1901232_518088228312044_1459383428_n

A friend told me this was going on, I had the day off and I thought, hey, why not meet Willow Shields again :) A super ton of fun and now my Catching Fire blu-ray is signed and pretty.

Saw Set It Off in Concert, Met Them, Fell in Love with Them Even More

1798258_521903357930531_904017149_n

I saw these guys live when they opened for Story of the Year at the end of 2013. They were INCREDIBLE and a huge inspiration for the start, middle and end of me writing The Awakened. Seeing them play after falling so much in love with them was super awesome.

Met the awesome guys of Green Light Theory

10013525_521846351269565_2129768430_n

These guys are the best. They played outside the Set it Off show to bring attention to their band, and they completely sold me on it. Plus they’re a great group of guys and I’m proud to call them my friends!

Was First in Line for the Divergent World Premiere

1902752_523824684405065_2136412027_n

I got no sleep, was freezing, had more than a few frustrating moments but I had a ton of fun and met Theo James, Ansel Elgort, Kate Winslet, amongst a lot more and I got to show Veronica Roth my Divergent tattoo. I call that a win.

APRIL

Met Stephen Chbosky and debut author Ava Dellaira

532282_530913477029519_937381953_n

I absolutely LOVED being able to meet Stephen again, who is just such an awesome person, besides just being a great author. Ava is a great addition to my ever growing list of authors that I love. She’s sweet, and totally talented and if you haven’t read Love Letters to the Dead yet, you’re crazy!

Attended Festival of Books, as a Member of the Press!

10157250_537163749737825_556473072960741161_n

Was SO excited to be press, and all that it entails, and being able to meet such fantastic authors. I always have such a blast at this weekend event and this year was no different, especially since I was able to meet John Green, Rainbow Rowell, Deb Caletti, Marissa Meyer and so many more. A GREAT year at the fest.

 Attended WonderCon 2014

1897678_539763106144556_7684635981116176534_n

My second year at WonderCon 2014 and I had a fantastic time. I absolutely love this con and I love how close it is to my own home. I met the cast of The 100, a show I didnt’ watch until recently but one that I totally love. And I got to hang out with a ton of great friends and meet authors like James Dashner, Kiera Cass and Frank Beddor.

Attended the FIRST Pasadena Teen Book Fest

10291746_544932715627595_8722404691981675888_n

Such an awesome new teen fest in Pasadena :) I had a blast meeting a ton of authors I’d never met before and being a part of the blog tour and blog team for this fest. Thanks to everyone who put this on and let me be a part of it. Andrew Smith was the honored guest of it and he’s so funny and I discovered a few new authors from this as well.

MAY

Saw Jamie Campbell Bower Live on Venice Beach

10347613_550072731780260_9195791029407333324_n

In the past year, Jamie has spent a lot of time with his band, The Darling Buds, writing new songs and playing them for everyone. He had done a pop up acoustic show in the UK and I was mean green with jealousy until he announced he would do one in NYC AND LA. I was SO excited and of course I made sure to be there!

Finally Met One of my Favorite Authors, Tammara Webber!

10354137_550102928443907_8239878750114847326_n

Immediately after I saw JCB on Venice Beach, my friends and I RACED to Glendale to meet Tammara Webber and Abbi Glines. I LOVE Tammara so so so much and I’m so glad to have made it to her signing. She’s a doll, and I use her as an inspiration a LOT.

Met Morgan Matson again and Met Jenny Han for the first time!

10250198_552528404868026_7467979203778211533_n

10352770_552526791534854_2869129636935439309_n

On Mother’s Day, both Morgan Matson and Jenny Han were doing a signing that I just couldn’t miss. So what did I do? I took my mom with me! Seeing Morgan again was fun, of course, and I fell absolutely in love with Jenny Han and immediately went home to read her new book, all in a matter of hours!

The All-Around Amazingness of Ontario Teen Book Fest 2014

10296854_555664167887783_3370660061307931048_n

I loved everything about this year’s Ontario Teen Book Fest just as I did last year. I loved being the blogger for it again and getting to know a bunch of absolutely fantastic authors. I loved the addition of the author speed dating and I loved being a part of this community. This fest means the world to me, and I will continue to be a part of it as long as I can! Also, I was in the program and that was awesome.

Rainbow Rowell Sends me a Postcard

10366126_556776747776525_2336501981147356148_n

YES! When I went to the Festival of Books, I wrote letters to John Green, Veronica Roth and Rainbow Rowell. I never ever expected anything back from them, but I wanted to know how much their books meant to me. When I received a postcard in the mail from Rainbow, I literally burst into tears. This was so sweet of her to answer me back, and I have this hanging on my wall as a reminder of the amazing authors that I admire.

Met Kiera Cass!

10308164_557448407709359_2604044263387430679_n

I had met Kiera Cass briefly at WonderCon but I was super excited to see her again, where I could spend more time with her and tell her how AWESOME The One was. Because seriously that book was incredible.

Read City of Heavenly Fire in 6 Hours

10274045_561542447299955_4849494407997856060_n

I was insanely anxious to see the end of this series that I love so much, so much that I rushed down to Walmart when my friend informed me that they had released it early and rushed home to read it as quickly as I could. Of course, I was massively disappointed in the ending but that’s a whole ‘nother story. At least I read fast ;)

Finished The Awakened!

10354960_566781893442677_4929913451047611450_n

I finished my novel. This was my number one goal of the year and I literally cried my eyes out when I did it. I was so proud of myself. I still am proud of myself. This novel took so much out of me, time and sacrifice and blood, sweat and tears. I worked HARD on this one and I continue to do so.

JUNE

Met Morgan Matson…Again…

10403559_566965100091023_1612760725546526971_n

I like to stalk Morgan Matson or something. Nah ;) I just absolutely love her and I’ll take any opportunity to meet her. Plus I hadn’t been able to get my copy of her Katie Finn book signed so I brought that along with me!

Saw The Darling Buds in Concert

1528467_571545712966295_1945836269040883629_n

After seeing JCB on the beach about a month earlier, his band announced they’d be playing a 21 and over show and I immediately got tickets for it, as did my friends. We had a blast going to it and we were able to meet all four members as well. AND I was finally able to get that picture will Lily Collins!

Girls Gone Sci-Fi Hits Mysterious Galaxy on Its Last Day

10426596_572221582898708_8640709483403870789_n

Hung out with some of my favorite people and favorite authors AND spent a tearful last day at one of my favorite bookstores in the entire world, Mysterious Galaxy. The store reigns on in San Diego but its Redondo store closed its doors and I’m glad I spent one last time there with some seriously awesome people.

Saw The Darling Buds…Again

10440984_573497872771079_1337704041062295689_n

Just a few days after the 21+ Darling Buds show, they held a free all ages show at the Gibson 90210 studios. We of course had to go to this as well and had a blast again. This time was especially fun as Jamie came over to my friends and I and sang part of the song with us. That pretty much made my entire life.

Went to the Ruin and Rising Release Party!

10446698_575824989205034_7486470016544960592_n

Leigh Bardugo is one of my favorite people in the entire world so I was VERY excited to be a part of her launch party once more, especially since I went home and read the book and was just blown away at how incredible a conclusion it was. There were drinks and goodies and a photo booth and a great great time.

Got my First Shout Out in a Book

10487308_580271932093673_5397675519223748754_n

I was browsing around instagram when a fellow blogger of mine posted that she was thanked in Siege and Storm, which had just been rereleased in paperback. I had a feeling so I rushed out to the bookstore (which I think was about to close) and grabbed a copy. I nearly cried when I saw that, yes, What A Nerd Girl Says had made the list. It was an honor to be amongst so many awesome blogs and to be in there, period.

Went to My First Ever ALA Conference in Las Vegas

10511362_582826021838264_7217504681051213823_n

For months, Courtney, my librarian friend, had encouraged me to attend the ALA Conference in Las Vegas. I went back and forth, especially since I knew I’d probably have to go alone. Eventually I convinced myself that a solo trip would be fun and I’m SO SO SO glad that I did. I met new people, made great connections and met a ton of new authors. DEFINITELY glad at.

JULY

Saw Hank Green in Concert

10513417_584324945021705_6219398232824218523_n

I had bought tickets to the concert months before I finally decided to go to ALA and this landed on the day I would be leaving Vegas. There was SO much drama on my way home and I nearly skipped the concert. My friends, however, convinced me to go and I’m glad I did. The concert was a total blast and I got to meet the other Green brother, Hank. Both Vlogbrothers in one year? That’s success.

Fangirl Day at Disneyland

10553433_596356753818524_6926990654428648477_n

My friends and I spent the entire day at Disneyland. I hadn’t started work there, so my parabatai, Sylvia, signed me in because she did. We brought our books and had a blast going on rides and taking pictures with our books. This is one of my favorite pictures of all time.

Saw James Dashner again

1908375_599719896815543_6246702183634116163_n

I was missing out on Comic Con again, because, let’s face it, I’m too poor for CC but I decided to go down to San Diego to meet James Dashner. It was a crazy day, one where my tire exploded on the way down and there was drama in trying to get it fixed, but, all in all, a great day.

AUGUST

Saw Set it Off…Again

10501839_606163956171137_7178641273558928071_n

Set It Off became a little bit of an obsession with me, but I don’t mind too much ;) They’ve been an incredible inspiration to me this year and I’m glad that I keep getting to see them and meet them. Their music makes me happy!

Fangirl Beach Day

10538060_608467972607402_5966178671691608857_n

Like fangirl day at Disneyland, I gathered a few friends and had a long, but awesome day at the beach with some books. It was a blast and as you can see, we had way too much fun taking pictures. Definitely something I will have to do every single summer.

Meeting Gayle Forman and If I Stay director Ray Cutler

10603698_607293582724841_6940999393570655264_n

Honestly, in all complete and total honesty, this event SUCKED. The Barnes and Noble it was held at was disorganized and unprofessional and just straight up terrible. BUT I’m glad to have met Gayle and RJ and Gayle’s parents were sitting in front of us, and were SO incredibly sweet as well. And we got cupcakes after the event so that’s always good.

Saw Fall Out Boy and Paramore

1625581_611589712295228_3457557671511319185_n

I had tickets for MONTHS to see Fall Out Boy and Paramore. I was sitting a million miles away but that’s okay. That is, until my good friend Jade snuck me to the front with her and I got see Fall Out Boy up close for the first time since I was in high school. It was also my first time seeing Paramore, and they are INSANELY good live.

Went to the If I Stay Red Carpet Premiere

10378315_613938915393641_1575541501356536370_n

This was such a dramatic and irritating day at a premiere. I was there all day and things weren’t going the way I wanted them to but then I was determined to make things work, and they eventually did. My one goal was to meet Jamie and Liana and I did so that was fantastic!

Got My Very First Rejection

10646777_615847871869412_4772796585496517334_n

This was one of the roughest moments of my year. This has been a rough year and hearing this sucked. But I keep trying to remind myself that this was the beginning of the right path for The Awakened. Some people don’t even make it to the querying agents stage so the fact that I’m doing it means I’m on the right path to becoming a published author.

SEPTEMBER

Met Josephine Angelini for Release of Trial by Fire

10653884_624127707708095_33746586654051192_n

Josie is a total doll. I had just seen her at ALA and gotten my hands on Trial by Fire, which I totally loved, so I was excited to meet up with her and celebrate the actual release of the novel. Plus she brought cupcakes, which is always fantastic.

Celebrated New Releases with Natalie Whipple, Kiersten White and Stephanie Perkins

10635884_627433434044189_8541415221486390985_n

I was able to attend this event down in Oceanside just days after I ended my relationship. And I’ll just say this, I’m grateful for each and every single one of these authors for putting on SUCH a great event and keeping my mind off of such a terrible thing in my life. All of the authors were funny and helpful and I’m glad to have met them all.

Got a Job at Disneyland!

10440965_640445049409694_6360374145133867139_n

This is easily one of the best things to happen this year. I have wanted to work at Disneyland for most of my life and I’ve been told many times that I could not, because of my visible tattoos. I decided to try one more time, because my parabatai encouraged me to, and so I did and I finally became a cast member. I have been there nearly three months now and I’m in love with my job. I’m so grateful for this job and how its kept my head above water the past few months.

Met Sarah J Maas Again!

10646830_629280797192786_6685613444723944234_n

This was SUCH a fun day. I have met Sarah a few times before and she was doing a full signing at the Barnes and Noble in Glendale with a panel but after the terrible time I had there for Gayle Forman’s panel, I decided I would just go to this quick signing at Costco. She remembered me and signed my Heir of Fire, and I also was able to meet a fan of my blog that day, which was fantastic as well.

Got My 13th Tattoo, Calcifer from Howl’s Moving Castle!

1559690_687268394727359_5163385431683059031_n

I had wanted this tattoo for quite some time, and I had planned on getting it soon. It was something that I really needed because of the terrible month that September had been, so this tattoo means a lot to me. Its beautiful, I’m very proud of it, and it was the perfect moment for it to become a part of me. And let’s face it, its damn cute too.

Met Misha Collins!

10698650_637152623072270_1766124495011454484_n

Not only did I get to meet Matthew Thomas, who is still getting so much buzz and accolade for his debut novel, but I got to meet its champion, Misha Collins who plays my absolute favorite character on Supernatural, Castiel. Pretty much one of the best days of my life.

Met and Interviewed Drew Daywalt

10342416_638200596300806_9173052222650026468_n

Normally I don’t tend to do children’s books on this blog. Its not my thing. But this book was read to us at the Matthew Thomas event and I FELL in love with it and knew I had to be at this event. It was a ton of fun, and I was able to interview Drew, who was fantastic, and a great person to meet. I’m glad that I decided to go to this.

Celebrated the Release of Kami Garcia’s Unmarked

1069814_638302266290639_1670156085557446059_n

Immediately after the Day the Crayons Quit event, Kami Garcia had her event for Unmarked. Such a fun a time, I had never met Kami before! Plus a ton of other authors joined in on the fun, including Christopher Rice. An epic day for sure.

OCTOBER

Met Becca Fitzpatrick and the duo of Christina Lauren

1959774_643257022461830_6887108253094067066_n

1958564_643260049128194_7289446788127178063_n

I’m not a massive fan of Becca’s Hush Hush series but I loved her new novel, Black Ice, so I definitely wanted to get it signed by the author. She was super sweet and I also discovered the duo of Christina Lauren, whose book Sublime is now definitely on my TBR list.

Saw Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness and Met Him

1609921_647777228676476_4938176969011927374_n

Andrew McMahon and the many incarnations he’s been a part of (Something Corporate, Jacks Mannequin, etc) is the most important musician in my life. Every song, every note, is beautiful to me and important to me. I had bought tickets to see him at the end of November, at the very end of his tour, but when I saw there were still tickets left for his second show in Los Angeles and I decided, why the hell not, and I’m so glad. I met new friends and saw an absolutely incredible show.

NOVEMBER

Celebrated the Last Harry Potter Day at Disneyland

1609933_659170347537164_3831887145687881455_n

It was a sad day for the very last day of Harry Potter Day at Disneyland. The word day was also used way too much in that one sentence…but anyway. I spent most of the day with my team, answering trivia questions correctly, as I do, before Disneyland basically shut down the entire event. Sadness. BUT I had a great day with my friends, so there’s always that.

Met Jessica Brody…Again

10394028_661473373973528_6529003201291921682_n

I don’t know that I can say I “met” Jessica Brody. Its more like…I hung out with her again. At this point, I feel lucky enough to call her friend.

Went to the Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 Red Carpet Premiere

10675763_667790810008451_838267759115759949_n

Another tiring and stressful day, we waited in line all day, waiting to be on the red carpet for this thing. We were pissed at the set up and the way they did the line but eventually we got on the carpet and ended up right on the barricade and I ended up meeting Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Suzanne Collins (!!!), and so so so many more. And we got to see the movie too, which I always count a win in my book.

Saw Circa Survive in Concert!

1505475_672557369531795_4904442996673246700_n

I was never a huge Circa Survive fan but they are my parabatai’s favorite band and I went with her to this concert. I somehow magically ended up on the barricade and had SUCH a blast. They’re so good, and Anthony Green is just an incredible musician, and I love him from his short time with Saosin. I can’t wait to see him play with them next month!

Saw Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness Again

1919670_674293719358160_1508998548516390789_n

Longest. Day. Ever. But worth every moment. I worked, tried to find Karen Gillan at Disneyland (and failed) and then got in line to see Andrew. I was SO far back, which pissed me off to no end but somehow, magically, ended up right in front at the barricade. It was SUCH a great show. He played more songs than he had at the last show, because he’s an Orange County boy AND it was the last show. I stayed after, of course, flirted with a cute boy ;) and got to say hello to my favorite musician again.

Went to The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies Premiere

10847974_679714055482793_8125425722222291760_n

I had been hoping to get to the premiere for the Hobbit and I’m so glad I was able to do so. It was a little disappointing because Benedict, Martin and Ian weren’t there, BUT I got to meet PETER JACKSON and Orlando Bloom and more, so I was quite satisfied. And I was able to see the movie as well, and I think its a fitting end to a very nerdtastic year for me.

Tuesday Top Ten: Updated on 2014 Nerd and Bookish Resolutions!

Hello everyone! Welcome to the Tuesday Top Ten!

Last year I made TEN resolutions that were nerdy/bookish related. Today I’m going to recount those for you, more about and whether or not I actually achieved them. In a couple weeks, buy information pills I’ll have NEW resolutions for you, cialis 40mg for the year of 2015!

Its all so exciting guys!

Let’s do this!

10. Get to BEA! – FAIL

I did not get anywhere near BEA! And it basically boils down to this: its expensive. I want to go. I really do. Its so much fun, from what I’ve heard and there are tons of authors there and free books and all of that. But I just could not afford it at all. Hopefully in the future sometime.

9. Read More Adult Novels – FAIL

As of this moment, I have read 122 books for the year (I know, I suck big time). 3 of those were adult novels and an addition 7 were new adult, which kind of counts. I basically wanted to explore more than just YA and let’s face, I failed miserably with that haha. 3 of 122 is 2% of the books that I’ve read so far this year.

8. Expand My Blog: More Nerd! – FAIL/SUCCESS

I’ve sort of failed and succeeded with this. I didn’t expand the nerd as much. I wanted to write more about movies and video games and all sorts of other things that weren’t books and I didn’t do such a great job at that. I think this one will end up on my list again for 2015 because I truly do want to make my blog all around nerdy, not just books, even though books is most successful part. But while I didn’t write about other things nerdy, I did expand a lot into writing. I wrote a TON about writing this year, and so I’m slowly expanding outward.

7. Hit 150K Views by The End of 2014 – SUCCESS

As of this moment (and there ARE still roughly 15 days left in the year), I am currently at 254,000 views. I completely blew away this number goal by over 100K. I am SO incredibly proud of this blog, all of its views and all of the awesomeness it has become. I know the past few months have been hard but I’m determined to get right back into it for 2015!

6. Only Ask for ARCs that I Know I Will Read – FAIL

Okay, I so failed this one. I have a stack of ARCs and a bunch on my Nook that I haven’t read. Now, part of this is that I didn’t stick to this resolution and asked for ones that I just knew I wasn’t going to read. The other part of it is…I”m stuck in the worst book slump that I’ve been in…ever. So yeah. For 2015, I’m gonna work on that some more. I also started receiving a ton of ARCs without request this year, so there’s that also. That was a VERY exciting part of my year :)

5. Cosplay More! – FAIL

HA! Nope. I didn’t even try. I really wanted to. I really wanted to dress up more and wear costumes and all of that and I didn’t even succeed slightly with this. I’m terrible. My first major event of 2015 is Gallifrey One in February and I’m determined I will cosplay in SOME way at that con.

4. Condense My Book Reviews/Posts – SUCCESS

DEFINITELY. I definitely succeeded with this one. All book reviews have a format, and they’re done much more concise and to the point than my old ones. I’m actually proud of myself for making my book reviews SO much better than they were before.

3. Concentrate More On Reading for Fun and Less on Reading for Goal – SUCCESS

I think I definitely did this one. Mostly because I was in such a slump, I started to care less and less about the actual end goal, and more about just enjoying reading. I was not enjoying reading several times this year and that made me incredibly sad, as reading is my number one thing to do. I’m SO behind on my goal, but I’ve kind of given up on it. I’m happy that I’ve read a little more books this month than I did last month and I’m concentrating on getting back to loving reading.

2. Read 150 Books – FAIL

Okay, I mean, technically I haven’t failed yet. I still have about 15 more days to finish…28 books? I could technically do it. I’m a fast reader. But this year has been full of so many ups and downs so I’m just glad that I finished any books, period. I think I’ll reach about 125-130 and I think that’s a fair goal. Reading more for fun. Plus I spent a TON of my time this year, not focused on reading, but focused on writing. Which leads me to my number one resolution for 2014.

1. Finish my Novel – SUCCESS

I finished my novel. I wrote all of The Awakened. I changed character names a couple times, I changed the title, I wrote and rewrote and edited and had other people edit and had beta readers and am currently receiving tons of rejection emails from agents but you know what? I finished it. I finished The Awakened. Its done. It was my main goal of the year, and I finished it back in the summer, and I’ve spent so much of my time since then making it the best it can be in order to find an agent and get this thing published. I’m so proud that of all the goals I set for this year, this one, this number one goal, was definitely accomplished!

*      *      *      *      *     *

Stay tuned! In a couple weeks, it’ll be time to make new goals!

Nerd Ink

Nerd Ink, Part Two

Let’s Talk About…Nerd Ink

Here is what I need from you:

1. Your Name and Where You’re From

2. A Picture of Your Tattoo

3. What the Tattoo Is and What Fandom/Geekdom its from

4. When You Got It

5. Why You Chose It.

Please take the time to do this part. It just needs to be a small paragraph (or a large one, if you prefer) but please don’t send: “It was cool”, “I liked it”, “just because”…and that sort of thing. The point of this is to profile nerd tattoos and why we get them, and to sort of show people that we put a lot of thought into this :)

Where to Send It

Please send all of these to my blog email: whatanerdgirlsays at gmail dot com with “Nerd Ink Post” in the subject line! Thank you!

The Tuesday Ten: Favorite Pixar Movies

One of the best things about being a nerd is that you get to act like a kid, viagra 100mg and there’s a bunch of other adults who are acting like kids just like you. Its the best part, treat easily. Its like John Green said, side effects you don’t just say “hey, I like stuff”; you get to jump up and down and yell and squeal and get excited. There’s no holding back and its GREAT. You get to show all the excitement you feel for things and it makes you feel like a kid.

And being a kid is fun. And being a nerd is the best of both worlds: I get to be an adult without all those rules of being little but I get to have and enjoy things like we all do when we’re kids. I’m still going to cover my walls in posters and photos like I did when I was younger but instead of NSYNC and the Spice Girls, I now have Harry Potter and Doctor Who on the walls.

But that kind of inspired my Tuesday Top Ten today. One thing that has always really drawn me to Pixar and their movies, especially as an adult, is how you really can have the best of both worlds in their movies. You have all the awesome and fun of a kids movie, with the humor and silliness, and fun stories but you also have these very adult themes, and these incredibly touching moments and lessons.

Over the years, Disney has produced okay movies, but I was a child during the amazing golden years of the 1990s (Aladdin, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, The Rescuers Down Under, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mulan, etc). So while movies that have come out in the last ten to fifteen years are good, none of them with the HUGE exception of Tangled, have really jumped out at me the way they did when I was a child.

The exception to this (besides Tangled) is the Pixar animated films. Ever since I first watched Toy Story when I was a child, I have enjoyed each and every one that has come to pass and I have as an adult as well. Pixar captures the amazing stories of a kid and an adult and you can enjoy them and love them no matter what age you are.

Sounds a little bit like a nerd kind of thing, doesn’t it?

So that brings us to this week’s Top Ten.

10. The Incredibles

IncrediblesWallpaper1024

Robert Parr, a.k.a. Mr. Incredible, was used to a life of action and worship as a superhero, and he completed the circle by marrying a fellow super, Elastigirl, and started a whole super family. But superheroes are forced to go into hiding, to acclimate into normal society. But Rob doesn’t want that, he misses the day of being a superhero and when he finds an opportunity to get back in the game, he jumps in. It doesn’t take long to realize his enemy has reeled him in and its a race for survival, and to save the world one more time. Everyone wants to be a superhero so whats not to love about this movie? Its a funny, family movie that has its humorous moments (Dash is probably the HIGHLIGHT of this movie-“We’re going to die!”) but it also stresses the importance of family, and appreciating the love you get from the people you care about, and less about the applause you get.

9. A Bug’s Life

A_Bug's_Life

I swear, this Pixar movie is the most underrated movie of the Pixar collection. I feel like everyone forgets this one when listing Pixar movies but it is is so awesome. Flik is a little ant, determined to make a difference, to be different from all the rest. And he’s also determined to protect his colony from the evil grasshoppers who terrorize them. He finds a group of circus bugs and convinces them to pose as warriors to save the colony, to convince the colony that his inventions and ideas are not crazy. Of course, the secret comes out and the colony isn’t happy…but then they realize that together, they can stand against the grasshoppers and eventually defeat them. Its a super sweet movie, and the story teaches us just as the others do: if we can stand together, we can accomplish so much. We should believe in ourselves and think out of the box. Anyone can be hero, no matter what size you are…which is one of my favorites. As a little person (I’m nearly 25 and only four foot eleven), those kind of lessons, that sort of themes, well, they’re awesome.

8. Ratatouille

remy-from-pixar-ratatouille-making-an-omelet

Isn’t that picture cute? Its a rat that makes food. A RAT that makes FOOD. Put those two together, and it sounds like something awful. We had rats in our house a few years back and it was awful. Remy is a rat living in Paris, where some of the most delicious food in the world exists, but he is surrounded by his family, who will eat whatever they find. After sneaking into a kitchen and preparing a soup, he is spotted by garbage boy, Linguini, and they pair up to become awesome chefs, to bring back the glory to a formerly five star restaurant. But this movie has so much charm, and its so deliciously French. And it involves food. I love food. Who doesn’t love food? Dumb, skinny people. I’m kidding. But this movie is so CHARMING. Its the first word that pops in my head when I think of this movie. The characters are all lovable, the storys is unique and great and its a fun movie to watch. And it teaches us that you can judge people on what they look like, or your preconceived judgements. Remy is a rat, and you definitely wouldn’t let him into the kitchen, but it turns out he is a great chef, a fantastic one, and he would never have gotten the chance if it wasn’t for Linguini believing in him.

7. Brave

brave3132012

In response to the fact that Pixar did not have a strong female character, they created this most recent movie, Brave. Brave follows the character, Merida, who is the princess of Scotland. However, she isn’t quite the princess material, not like the princesses we know of previous Disney movies. She likes archery, eating, belching, riding her horse. She wants her freedom and she wants to break the rules. Of course, this doesn’t endear her to her mother, and they disagree often. Then when her mother is transformed into a bear by a spell, they have to work together to fix it and they both learn a little about ecah other. I love this movie because straight up, Merida is badass. Its about time we get a REAL princess. I mean, don’t get me wrong. I love Belle (BOOKS! She gets a library from the beast!) and I adore Rapunzel, but they’re so classically beautiful and skinny and perfect. Merida is short, has amazingly wild flaming red hair and can shoot better than anyone in her kingdom. Its a nice movie to show little girls, showing them that they can accomplish anything.

6. Toy Story

Toy Story

As the first Pixar movie I have ever seen, as the first one to come bursting into our hearts, it has to make my top ten list. I don’t know anyone who didn’t wish their toys would come to life when they were a child. I don’t know many people who didn’t think they actually did. Wouldn’t that be absolutely wonderful? Woody is a cowboy toy, the favorite toy of Andy, and he enjoys being basically the king of Andy’s room. That is, until brand new and hip space toy, Buzz Lightyear comes into the room and everything changes for Woody. In the end, friendship conquers everything as Buzz and Woody realize that despite their differences, they are friends first and foremost. This is a story about friendship, hands down and you continue to see this sort of theme in the other two movies.

5. Finding Nemo

finding_nemo_wallpaper

I LOVE THIS MOVIE. My boyfriend doesn’t really like this one (He’s got this sort of negative bias when it comes to Ellen DeGeneres…and oddly, Kevin Costner) so I don’t get to watch it as much as I wish I could. However, I have seen it several times and I adore it; it really is a jewel in the Pixar family. Marlin is an uptight and overprotective father to son, Nemo, after his wife and the rest of their potential children are killed. One day, Nemo defies his father, in order to gain some freedom and is “kidnapped” by a fisherman. The movie continues as Marlin embarks on an epic journey to track down his son and bring him home, making friends and enemies along the way. I have always been into sea creatures, and I love that every creature in this movie has such a personality from Marlin to Dory the fish, Crush the turtle, Bruce the shark, and so on. And it really teaches us that we have to get out there in the world, experience things. We should always approach things with caution of course, but we won’t experience life or live life unless we loosen up a bit. Brilliant movie.

4. Monsters Inc

Monsters-Inc wallpaper 1024x768 006

I know a lot of people who would put this a lot lower on their list (Dad!) but I adore this movie. Its monsters, but unlike we’ve really seen them before. We learn of Monsters Inc, a company that uses the screams of children to power their city. They have “scarers”, monsters who sneak into kids rooms and scare them in order to get the screams and the energy. They don’t do it because they enjoy terrorizing us; in fact, they’re kind of scared of us. They just need the energy. Then one day, something goes a little wrong and a little girl, Boo, sneaks into Monstropolis and chaos ensues as Mike and Sully try to get her back home. I like this one because of Boo, mostly; she’s damn adorable and even though she’s a toddler, she’s fearless and she’s able to change the views of everyone in Monster world. It goes back to that idea of preconceived perceptions; they thought children were evil and hazardous but it turns out that they’re not, of course (I mean…most of the time…) and that laughter is actually a better source of energy than screams. I am still waiting for the sequel where we see an older Boo but I can’t wait to see Monsters University this summer.

3. Wall.E

Wall_E_by_MrCanavan

THIS MOVIE IS SO DAMN CUTE! It is one of the cutest and most romantic movies in the whole world and there isn’t even a lot of talking in this movie. Wall.E is back on earth, an earth of the future, where we have trashed it to pieces and have abandoned it for space. Wall.E remains, cleaning up the mess because that’s his job…until one day, EVE appears and he falls madly in love with the female robot. He follows her into space, on to the great ship where the humans are, and we see them try and convince them to come back, to bring the earth back to where she used to be. Its a beautiful story. First and foremost, its a love story and its one of the most sincere love stories I’ve seen in awhile. Most love stories nowadays are so chaotic and tragic and this one is just so simple and awesome. Some people think this movie is a little preachy but I like it. It may be a little bit extreme but the movie shows a lot of the truth. We need to take care of this planet, no matter how badly it gets and we should never abandon it, because it takes care of us. I also think the whole fat people in hover chairs on the space ship was a little dig too, that we need to get outside and enjoy life more often. I hope that I am able to do that and I know sometimes I am not. Another fantastic Pixar movie.

2. Toy Story 3

Toy-Story-3

This is one of the most emotional, raw movies I have ever seen…and its an animated childrens movie. We have now reached the end (or so we thought until they brought up Toy Story 4), and Andy is about ot go off to college. The toys haven’t been played with for years and they’re feeling neglected. Woody is going off to college with Andy but the rest of the toys are going to be put up in the attic…until the accidentally get donated to a preschool, and they are suddenly under the tyrannical rule of Lotso Huggin Bear. It really gives the toys a chance to think about their lives, even though their toys, and whether they need to hold on or move on. The scene where the toys hold hands together as they are heading toward death…tears. One of the most mature and real and raw portrayals of death and the acceptance of death I’ve ever seen…and in a children’s movie. The scene where Woody makes the decision that the toys should move on, go on to make a new child happy, and Andy realizes how much the toys have done for him…beautiful. I first watched Toy Story when it come out back in 1995 and to come full circle with these characters that I fell in love with as a child in 2010 at 22 years old is a wonderful thing.

I have seen this movie a hundred million trillion times. I can quote this entire movie. I quote this movie randomly throughout my daily life. (“I like you temporarily”. “But its a talking dog!” “Tomorrow, come back tomorrow and I will have the bird”) Its a sweet movie, it has romance and adventure. It begins with Carl as an adventure loving child, who meets Ellie, another adventure loving child. It shows their entire life together (to the tune of “Married Life”, which I am totally walking down the aisle to…and is the BEST part of the entire movie) all the way up until Ellie’s death, before they are ever able to go on their adventure to South America. Then we see Carl as an old man, stuck in his familar world, afraid to move on, talking to Ellie as if she’s still alive…and then he decides to go on an epic adventure, tying hundreds of balloons to his house, and taking off to Paradise Falls, meeting young Russell along the way. The movie shows an epic romance, a traditional classic romance that we all wish for, and it shows the sadness after the romance is over, after your partner dies. But it also shows us that we can find love in other ways, in the way that Carl finds love in Russell, and he is able to move on. Its such a wonderful, beautiful movie and I will never tire of it. Never ever. There is a reason that this movie (along with Beauty and the Beast and Toy Story 3) is one of the few animated films to ever be nominated for Best Picture.

So there’s my top ten. I am so eager to see what else Pixar brings us in the future. They have never disappointed me (except maybe in the case of Cars 2, but I’ve never seen it so who knows) and they continue to make fun, and life changing movies.

I left off Toy Story 2, Cars, and Cars 2. I adore TS2 and Cars very much, but they just didn’t quite make the list. I also have never seen Cars 2 because, well, I don’t really have a desire to see it :/ However, I am very, very excited for Monsters University this summer!

Coming soon: post on Gallifrey One! I know, its so LATE but its coming, I swear! This month is insane! SO much going on. Its my birthday tomorrow!
