BioShock Infinite: Worth the Wait!

After what seemed like the longest wait EVER (okay, website like this not ever, but still), Bioshock Infinite, the third installment in the Bioshock video game series, finally hit stores everywhere. The game was announced back in August 2010, after the release of Bioshock 2 in February of the same year. A few years and a couple delays later, we finally got this installment.

Now, I’m not a gamer. I wish I was. I LOVE video games. They have great stories, they’re super fun and they come in a million different varieties, just like books. You can play fantasy games and dystopian games, historical games, and children’s games.

But I don’t really play. Not because I dont’ want to but because I just plain SUCK at them. I just don’t have the patience for one thing…and my hand-eye coordination basically doesn’t exist. So while I had a strong urge to finally play this installment of Bioshock, alas, it was not in the cards.

It was however, in the cards, for our guest blogger, my boyfriend, Jonathan. He spent his Spring Break playing this game, and you can read his review below :) It is written VERY similarly to my Book of the Week posts, so it’ll be easy for you all to read!

Enjoy!

Bioshock Infinite: A Review

I do not have much experience writing reviews but I figured why let that stop me! I recently purchased the game Bioshock Infinite and have already beat the game so I think I am now qualified to write a review of said game. This game is of course the follow up to the critically and commerically successful Bioshock which was released in 2007. The original Bioshock is the story of an underwater city, Rapture, in 1960 that turns for the worst. The game is heavily influenced by the works of Ayn Rand. Bioshock Infinite is the story of the floating city Columbia created by the US in 1912. Bioshock Infinite went through several delays and had already won numerous awards at events such as E3 and thus was building a lot of hype for its release. Alright so onto the review!

Genre:
1st person shooter
Part of A Series?:
Yes it is, it is the third installment of the Bioshock series. It may not seem clear how Columbia is connected to Rapture but playing through it it becomes evident there is a connection between the two cities that have fallen.
BioShockInfinite02
Plot Summary:
“Bring us the girl and wipe away the debt”, a simple phrase that starts our hero on his journey. Bioshock Infinite is the story of a former pinkerton agent Booker Dewitt who has come into some enormous debt. Someone has offered to take care of his debt but in order to do so he must journey to Columbia, which had seceded from the US and disappeared, and retrieve a girl named Elizabeth who can open up “tears” in reality. Almost as soon as Booker arrives in Columbia he is proclaimed to be the “false shepherd” by the zealous prophet Comstock. The citizens of Columbia are then after Booker because they follow Comstock with religious intensity. Unlike other games where the whole story is the journey to the girl, Bioshock Infinite goes the way where Booker and Elizabeth meet fairly early in the game they then must fight their way to through a rebellion  find the truth about Elizabeth’s powers, and a way out of Columbia.
The Bad:
There is some bad in this game because there is no such thing as a perfect game. One of the things I did have a problem with was some things in the battle system. The battle system seemed very similar to the system in the original Bioshock without much being added to it. They strived to tell a good story with this game but the battle system did not feel it always got that attention. Another thing was the vigors system, it seemed added on to be like the battle system in Bioshock but for some reason no one else in Bioshock Infinite uses vigors to fight, ONLY YOU. That part did not make a whole lot of sense to me as I was going through fighting enemies.
The Good:
Oh the good in this game! I will get it out of the way first and say that the story in this game is amazing! The original Bioshock had a good story and so it was expected that this game would follow suit. It starts off simple enough but as the game progresses the story goes to new levels and were those levels exciting! The city becomes embroiled in a revolution but that never becomes the main story, the story always stays with Booker and Elizabeth. I will not give away any spoilers but the ending of this game is definitely worth playing through and will leave you thinking!
8644620130324_193134_0_big-1024x576
Columbia the city is a beautiful city and feels almost as it did actually happen in the past. A floating city in the sky at the height of American exceptionalism there is propaganda that adourns the cities and even statues referring to the founding fathers almost as deities. There are railways that connect the different floating islands with it all centered around the giant statue of Columbia, which is where Elizabeth is held captive. The setting has a steam punk kind of feel, which I am not always a fan of, but it really works well here because of how grounded it is into US history. Since Elizabeth’s powers have to do with tearing open reality there are a lot of musical Easter eggs in the game such as a barbershop quartet singing “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys (as this song would not be written for another 50+ years!). These slight reality warping events add nice little touches in the game to look out for!
Lastly, this game would not have been as great without Elizabeth. A lot of the companions in games end up being huge burdens (Resident Evil 4-Sara, here: I totally agree. Your companion in that game is USELESS! ) but this is not the case in Bioshock Infinite. Never once do you have to worry about protecting Elizabeth, the game immediately tells you she can take care of herself. As I was going through the game I had to rely on her quite a bit as she finds salts, ammo, and health for you if you are running low. During battles she can also open tears that aid in the battle, such as bringing health, weapons, or allies. She is written very well as a character with depth she is determined to go see Paris and longs to be free of the nightmare of Columbia and she knows she has to make difficult decisions to get there. She does not spend time being a reactive character to your actions as she is easily the most powerful character in the game and her actions dictate what Booker does.
Bioshock-Infinite-Elizabeth
The game’s score, voice acting, and graphics were also top notch but in this kind of game those did not seem as important when the other stuff just worked so well.
Rating:
5 out of 5 stars. This might quite possibly be my favorite video game of all time.
Recommended or Not?:
YES! I highly recommend this game to anyone who wants a game with a great story. If you just want to play a shooter there are better shooter out there but if you want something with an amazing story then this is the game for you! The game is currently being sold at places such as Walmart, Best Buy, Amazon, etc. I bought this one for my PS3 but it is also available for Xbox 360 and the PC. If you are not familiar with the series the PS3 version of the game comes with the original Bioshock (well mine did) and so you can get an idea how the series is (Bioshock 2 is not necessary to the story).

Top Eleven Badass Fictional Ladies

So a couple months ago (actually kind of awhile ago), information pills I did a blog post on the hottest fictional boy characters. I’m a little boy crazy and I probably could have done more than eleven. But I managed to narrow it down.

Unfortunately, viagra order I got some complaints from my small male audience, viagra saying where is the list of hot girls?

So this is the closest thing I can come to this. I mean, I do like girls and I do think every single one of the ladies listed below are pretty damn hot. I also think a ton of them are hot because they are so badass.

I mean, there is something about a woman with a weapon in her hand that is simultaneously sexy and badass.

I know that a lot of you won’t agree with this list. I know you all have your own opinions which is awesome! Unfortunately for you, this blog is called WhataNerdGirlSays and I’m the “girl” in that and I get to pick :)

So enjoy my list and feel free to complain ALLLLLL you want in the comments. I love to hear it, good and bad haha.

MY Top Eleven Badass Fictional Ladies

11. Elena Fisher

I don’t know how many of you have played the Uncharted games on the PS3, but they are some seriously awesome games. They play well, the stories are fuckin addicting and the characters are so damn real. Half the time, I am content to just watch my boyfriend play because it’s like a movie. Nathan Drake is the main character in these games, kind of a modern day Indiana Jones, who always has a lady by his side and one of those ladies, one that seems to keep appearing over and over again in these games is Elena Fisher. Chloe, the curvy brunette, gets a lot of the fan boys attention but Elena gets my attention. That girl is wicked. She is a journalist, determined to get the story, no matter the cost, and she can handle a gun as well as anyone…and if you need a getaway car, she’s the one to call. Nate Drake can deny it all he wants; he finds Elena sexy as hell and this girl does too.

10. Marion Ravenwood

I don’t care that I wasn’t even born when this movie came out, I mean, my parents were both still in high school when this movie came out. But Marion Ravenwood is easily my favorite Jones girl. She is AWESOME. She is so pissed at Indiana, slaps him in the face and shows absolute disdain for him at times. I really like her because she can hold her own. She can handle a knife and a gun and she’s a tough cookie. No matter what is thrown at her, she relies on herself to get out. After being kidnapped, she doesn’t sit there and think “Oh, I’m just gonna wait for Indiana to save me”, she is clever enough to try and get out of the situation herself. Plus she is so damn sarcastic. I love sarcasm; its a wonderful artform and I love a heroine that can kick ass while having a snarky attitude.

9. Inara Serra

It took me AGES to get into this show. I had heard of it but I didn’t really think it was something I liked. Like Doctor Who, people bugged me enough for me to finally go “Eh, why not?” and I watched it. I figured, its less than 15 episodes and its on Netflix so I can watch it for free. And I am so glad. I went through all the episodes so incredibly fast. And throughout all the episodes, the one character that really caught my eye (besides Nathan Fillion as Captain Mal…hubba hubba) was Inara. Inara is on the ship, Serenity, with the rest of the ragtag crew but she has a slightly different purpose than the other members. Inara is a highly sought after, very classy prostitute. But despite that, she’s so badass. One, she’s gorgeous. Two, she could be on any ship in the galaxy, but she chooses to stay on that one, no matter what happens. And she’s badass in her own right. She’s not always out there in the fight but when she is? I want her on my side.

8. Isabelle Lightwood

Isabelle Lightwood is not the first person I noticed when I started reading the Mortal Instruments. Obviously I noticed Jace Wayland first (HUBBA HUBBA). And then I noticed Clary Fray. Obviously. Clary and Jace are the main characters in this series. But then I started to notice Isabelle Lightwood. Clary gets thrown into this Shadowhunter world at sixteen years old; she has never known anything of it before. You are experiencing this world anew along with her. Isabelle, on the other hand, has been raised a Shadowhunter…and she’s a badass Shadowhunter. She’s brave as hell, and she’s going around, killing demons while wearing short skirts and stilettos. Sexy and deadly. I love the fact that her weapon, her signature weapon, is a gold whip. I mean, can you give her a weapon that is anymore sexy and badass? I have no idea why Isabelle is carrying a flamethrower in the trailer for City of Bones, but who cares? It’s awesome.

7. Katniss Everdeen

Katniss Everdeen is a badass, female character all the way up to Mockingjay. Then she gets whiny. But BEFORE that, she’s badass. She’s too busy feeding her family to worry about boys. I mean, sure, she’s sixteen and its passed her mind. She has hormones, right? And I bet Gale was one hot piece to look at it. But she’s like, “Cool, Gale is hot…I’m hungry”. And that’s awesome. She’s more concerned for survival than anything else. Even when she is in the Hunger Games, and its so beyond obvious that Peeta is head over heels in love with her, she utilizes it to her survival. Now, I’m not advocating using a person who loves but how many of us wouldn’t use that sort of protection when our life is on the line? I admire a girl who puts her own survival above anything else. When her dad died, and her mom gave up, she could’ve curled up in a ball and just let life take her but she didn’t. She remembered what she could do, with plants and hunting (and her badass bow) and she survives. AWESOME.

6. Alianne Cooper of Pirate’s Swoop

Alianne Cooper is sixteen years old, and she’s daughter of the King’s Champion (who is also the first female knight in a century) and the King’s spymaster. Her godmother is the queen and her godfather is the queen. She has adopted aunts and uncles that are the Commander of the King’s Guard, the most powerful mages in the realm and so on. Her brothers are a university student of magic and a page on the path to knighthood. You could say that she has a lot to live up to. And the best part? She totally does, and she almost surpasses them all. She makes the mistake of sailing her boat alone and is captured by pirates and is sold into slavery into the neighboring Copper Isles. When she is given to a family, she realizes that she’s caught up in a rebellion, to take the country back from the tyrannical rulers and give it back to the natives. She becomes the spymaster for the rebellion at sixteen years old and is a pivotal part in its success. And she can handle a pair of daggers pretty damn well.

5. Scarlett O’Hara

Badass. Think about it: Scarlett O’Hara was a young woman, in the South, in the mid 1800s, when women were seen and not heard, there to make good marriages but not much more than that. And Scarlett O’ Hara is opposite of all that. Even in the beginning, when she is sixteen and looking for a husband, she still doesn’t fall into that proper bred Southern woman. She goes for what she wants and she takes whats not hers. Ashley Wilkes doesn’t love her, can’t marry her? Well, then, that’s fine, let’s steal India Wilkes’ beau and marry Charles Hamilton. She’s rash and ferocious and quick tempered and awesome. Atlanta is falling to pieces, the Yankees are coming and she’s like, I don’t care, I want to go and she goes home, even after Rhett Butler ditches her, and her two slaves, a sick Melly, her small child Wade (read the book) and Melly’s newborn. And despite protests amongst all her friends and family, she finds her way back into wealth, doing what she has to do so she is never hungry again. Perfect.

4. Doctor companions

I tried to pick one. I really did. I was like, Rose, duh. But Donna…and Amy! Ugh. So I decided that number four on the list was going to be the four companions of the new Doctor Who series. Rose Tyler is the most badass, taking everything in stride and fixing it. I love Rose because she’s that perfect equivalent to the Doctor; sometimes she’s just one step above him and it’s just awesome. Martha is pretty badass too; she’s a doctor and pretty much saves the world, walking all across it to save it. Donna is one of my absolute favorites: she has such little belief in herself and yet she’s the most important woman in the world. She saves the world! And Amy Pond, oh Amy Pond, the girl who waited. The Doctor’s companions are like Bond girls…except better. Not only are they hot but they are smart as hell and they kick ass. And hell, they keep the Doctor in line and there’s not many who can do that.

3. Clary Fray

I love the Mortal Instruments series. The one thing I don’t like about TMI is the love triangle. I hate love triangles. Please go away. Why do you think that people don’t like Twilight? I know my beef is that I want to tell Bella to shut the hell up about whether to choose Edward or Jacob and just be badass. God. That’s what sets Clary apart. Sure, Simon, plain ‘ol lovable geeky mundane Simon, and Jace, hot, sexy, dangerous Shadowhunter, are fighting over Clary. In my personal opinion, Simon never really has a chance so I don’t know that it was much of a love triangle. But despite Simon and Jace fighting over her, Clary is too concerned on saving her mother, and then saving the Shadowhunters and Downworlders. She comes from Shadowhunter blood, but she’s a mundane, a human, and she’s rushing into vampire lairs to save her best friend and tearing apart ships with powerful runes and making Portals into Idris so she doesn’t get left behind. She creates the Alliance rune, to convince Shadowhunters and Downworlders to work together, against the bad guy, to save the world. And she’s a redhead. I love Clary Fray, she’s awesome.

2. Princess Leia

You know when I decided Princess Leia was the biggest badass ever? When Luke Skywalker walks in to rescue her and she’s like “Yeah? So?” Best. Moment. Ever. She doesn’t know this guy and she’s not falling down at his feet, dying to be rescued. She basically gets herself out of everything. She can handle a blaster like no body’s business, and she runs circles around Luke (ew, he’s her brother haha) and Han. Even when she’s being tortured to reveal the location of the rebel base, she still lies to protect everyone. Her snarky attitude and sarcasm, and her absolute determination to spurn her feelings for Han. She’s fantastic. There’s a part in Empire Strikes Back where she is so concerned on getting everyone else evacuated off of Hoth and its only until Han basically drags her, that she leaves. She is so commited to the rebellion and its awesome; she’s willing to do anything for it. And those buns, there’s never been a hairstyle like that haha.

1. Hermione Granger

Plain and simple, Hermione is the best, most badass heroine ever. You can argue with me all you want. The fact is, she’s smart as hell and she’s never going to dumb herself down for anyone, even Ron. Even though Ron finds her intelligence annoying at times and intimidating at other times, she sticks to her guns and never hides her intelligence and that’s fantastic. And when Ron is an absolute jerk and leaves her and Harry, she carries on. She continues to fight. Her morale is down and she’s sad, and she goes days without saying anything to Harry, but she still fights on, looking for those Horcruxes. And damn, she’s just so smart! She finds solutions to everything and she’s a quick thinker. I don’t know how many times characters in the book are just amazed at Hermione’s brilliance. No matter how many times it happens over the course of the books, you still want to cheer every time she  spouts off a random bit of information or gets them out of a sticky situation. Also, who knew that little dorky Emma Watson would grow up to be so beautiful? Hermione is NOT supposed to be that attractive but she makes it work and its awesome.

So most of you probably don’t agree with my list and that’s okay! Because everyone has different opinions and tastes. These eleven fictional women rock my world and make my palms a little sweaty :) And since I know you all are going to disagree with me, why don’t you share with me your picks! I always love to hear from you guys and I want to know what sexy fictional ladies tickle your fancy :D

Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!

See you soon!

Happy Nerdsgiving…I Mean, Thanksgiving!

Happy Nerd Thanksgiving!

Now for those of you living here in the United States, viagra order I’m sure you know what this holiday is all about. I’m sure you dressed up in the paper costumes of Pilgrims and Indians back in first grade and you know, this you know, see just get to the turkey and the Black Friday sales already.

For those of you who don’t know what its about it, its basically this: The Pilgrims came to America to settle in the New World. Thanksgiving marks the first dinner, and meal that the Pilgrims and Indians shared together. Its all about the peaceful bond between the two and how they came together to enjoy this meal and all that fun stuff.

Those of who know better, know that we slaughtered the NATIVE AMERICANS in the thousands and gave them blankets laced with small pox and drove them from their homes.

But I digress.

But whatever the background of the actual holiday, it reminds to be thankful for the things that we have. I always tell myself, I need to be thankful every day, not just on a day like Thanksgiving. It’s like Valentine’s Day. You don’t need one day a year to remind yourself of the people you love. And yet, its a day to celebrate an American holiday, to spend time with your family and remind yourself that you are lucky, no matter what. There are always things to be thankful for.

So today, I’m making my little list of things that I am thankful for.

10. My Blog

I started this blog back in May, and I can honestly say that this has made me extremely happy. Even when I’m having a bad day, or even if I am having the worst writer’s block, this blog is here. Here, I don’t have to worry about impressing anybody. I mean, its cool if I do but it’s mostly here for me to have nerd rants. Its for me to go on nerd tangents and if people want to follow me on this crazy tangents, that’s all good too. Its fun to be able to write about the things I love the most in the world. And I’m grateful for having it. And I’m grateful that I do have followers and that they like what I write :D

9. Movies

I adore movies and I am thankful for being able to watch them pretty much whenever I want to. I have a PS3 and a budding movie collection. I have a Netflix account and a Hulu Plus account and a television set to watch movies on TV. That is more than a lot of other people have and I’m grateful for it. There are so many badass and awesome movies out there and I am so happy that I get to enjoy all of these movies. Movies are amazing and I am thankful to have the ability to view them.

8. Los Angeles Dumbledore’s Army

One of the best things to ever come into my life. I discovered them a year ago, in October of 2011, and I am so excited to have them in my life. Not only do I have a ton of fun every single time that we have a meet-up but I also have met the most awesome group of friends ever. If you’ve never had a chance to read my post about this amazing, amazing group, you can read it here.

7. My Home

My home isn’t perfect. There isn’t a home in the world that is perfect. Home is about who is with you. But I am grateful for being able to have a home, with my family, and a second home, with my boyfriend and his family. I am grateful to have a bed to sleep in and a roof over my head. I am grateful for having a bathroom in order to do my business and take showers. I’m grateful for the refrigerator and stove in order to be able to eat food. I grateful for this small building where I feel safe.

6. Harry Potter

What would I have ever done without Harry Potter in my life? I am grateful for this book series and for J.K. Rowling for giving and teaching me so much. I literally do not think I would be the person I am today without it. No way. I don’t have four HP tattoos for nothing; it means so much to me and I am thankful every day for it existing and for being able to experience the magic and the adventure any time I want.

5. Writing

I am grateful, thankful, appreciative and lucky for the ability to write. Sometimes I don’t think I am a great writer and other days, I can’t imagine what I would do if I couldn’t write. It’s the only thing I’ve ever felt like I was good at. So I am thankful for a talent that I love and that will hopefully get me far in life.

4. Books

How could I ever live without books? What would I do without them? I couldn’t live if I couldn’t read. Books provide so much for me. They provide entertainment and they provide comfort and they provide lessons and they provide the best therapy that money can buy. Every time I am swept into the world that a book creates, I can’t even handle it. There is nothing like the feeling a book gives you.

3. My Friends

I have some of the most awesome friends in the world. I am not always the most fantastic friend in the world. I’m busy and I’m shy and sometimes I just want to sit at home and do nothing. Sometimes I’m just selfish. I’m not perfect. But no matter what happens, they love me and they support me and they are there for me no matter what.

2. My Boyfriend

I am lucky enough to have been dating my boyfriend for nearly five years. Jon is the best boyfriend, not perfect, but perfect for me. He has taught me so much about what it is like to be in a real, long, loving relationship. He’s seen at my worst and at my best and he loves me. He supports me no matter what, through thick and thin, he makes me laugh, he’s smart as hell, he takes my NERDtastic awesomeness with ease and he’s just so freakin fantastic. I couldn’t ask for a better boyfriend.

1. My Family

Every time I spend a day with my family, or even just hang out with them for a couple hours, I remember how damn awesome they are. They drive me absolutely insane but I love them so much. I have the coolest siblings in the world. We’ve been there for each other through thick and thin, through bad (and it’s been bad) and through good (but good too!) and they just all rock. They all take after their nerd sister a little bit: a love of anime here, a love of video games there, and so on. And I have a fantastic dad, seriously, he is a rock star. What would I do without these crazy, amazing people in my life?

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope that you can enjoy your turkey and pudding and your stuff and pie and even if you’re not American, I hope you can also remember that there is so much in your life to be grateful for :)
