That Time I Met James Dashner and My Tire Exploded…

HELLO EVERYONE!

How are all of you on this fine weekend? I hope fantastic! What are you all reading right now? I’m currently re-reading The Fiery Heart, viagra in the hopes that I’ll finish it before Tuesday when Silver Shadows comes out.

2014-07-26 13.09.31

Today was a super fun and crazy day! Last week, more about my good friend Cassandra and I drove down to San Diego (roughly about a two hour drive) to pick up wristbands for a book signing event that would be taking place at the local Barnes and Noble for Comic Con weekend. James Dashner would be there, promoting the movie tie-in edition of The Maze Runner. I met James back in April at WonderCon but was totally looking forward to seeing him again!

Who knew it was going to be such a crazy day!

I picked up Cassandra and we began the fun task of driving all the way over there. We were only roughly about 30 minutes away when my car started shaking uncontrollably and I smelled smoke. Obviously not a good sign. I started to slow down, in order to pull over, and BAM! My tire on my car literally EXPLODED! It was one of the craziest feelings ever!

So, of course, I call AAA. Well apparently they cancelled my membership or something. DRAMA. So then I dialed 511 to see if I could get free roadside assistance. No free roadside assistance in the middle of nowhere area I was in. (Fun Fact, I ended up in the town of Rainbow. No lie) DRAMA. I called my dad but he was a good 1.5 hours away. DRAMA.

But the clouds opened and the sun shined down on us! An AAA guy stopped and asked if I called him. I didn’t, and he was actually looking for another car but he stopped and helped me replace my tire anyway. We were back on the road! Yay!

2014-07-26 13.09.24

We made it to the Barnes and Noble and discovered that we were basically the first people there. We bought our books, grabbed some iced teas and sandwiches from the cafe and then proceeded to wait until they set up the area for us. Suddenly, people started lining up behind us, as they tend to do and we ended up in the front row! Yay!

2014-07-26 12.45.56

Do we look tired? We were kind of tired haha! We also met up with the darling Sama (aka bookautopia from instagram) and she was a total sweetheart.

Then it was time for James Dashner!

2014-07-26 14.00.26

He talked about The Maze Runner trilogy, the upcoming adaptation and his newer book, The Eye of Minds. Yesterday was the first official screening of the finished movie so he talked about that a bit. It was really cool because when he first came out, and was looking around at the crowd, he spotted me and went “I’ve met you somewhere before, right?” and I laughed, because I had just met him back in April at WonderCon and I was wearing the same shirt (my BRIGHT pink What A Nerd Girl Says shirt). That was pretty cool.

After talking for a bit, he took some fan questions. I was too busy listening to him that I just forgot to record any of it like a doofus but I did get this little bit. Someone asked him who he thought would survive in the maze, as far as the cast goes. Its a short video, so check it out!

After the Q & A, they set up for signings. We were given two options: get one book personalized OR get all of your books signed. As much as I love having my books personalized, I got my Maze Runner personalized back in April and I just wanted the rest of them signed, so I opted for that.

I got up in line, and he asked me where we had seen each other and I told him WonderCon and he remembered. We talked a little bit about the book and movie and especially about writing, and that was awesome.

2014-07-26 21.38.22 2014-07-26 21.40.00 2014-07-26 21.40.59

Here’s a flashback when I met James back in April:

10151349_540724362715097_4781911843251401787_n

Because I already had a copy of Maze Runner, I got my hands on a second copy (thanks Cass!) and got it signed!

2014-07-26 21.38.02

This, along with some of the cool swag I grabbed (see below), will make for an awesome giveaway. Keep an eye out for it, but don’t get too excited. It probably won’t be until September, around when the movie is released!

2014-07-26 21.43.13

The pins are mine :) But I have a couple bookmarks and an extra “Shuck It” sticker that’ll be up for grabs in that September giveaway! Keep an eye out.

After the signing, we went to a nearby tire place, took care of my tire issues. The guy working there really took care of my Elphie (oh yes, I named my car after Elphaba in Wicked) and even threw in a free tire. Meanwhile, Cass and I enjoyed some sushi and ice cream. Yum!

After that, we made the long drive home. We decided to stop by Best Buy. If you went by Best Buy, you could watch the newly released Mockingjay Part 1 trailer and get your hands on a ticket to see the movie, a Mockingjay pin and a poster. Unfortunately by the time we got there all they had were posters but that’s okay because I love posters! And the trailer was AWESOME. I can’t wait for this movie to come out!

2014-07-26 19.06.54-2

All in all, it was a super fun day, even with all the crazy car drama! I’m glad to have my entire TMR trilogy signed and I’ll be having an epic giveaway come September!

Meeting John and Carole Barrowman!

While I was moping and generally feeling sorry for myself last week for missing out on Comic Con, viagra and the chances to meet some of my favorite celebrities and see new trailers for movies like Divergent and all that, unhealthy I was pretty much doing anything and everything possible to keep myself busy and happy.

Luckily enough, viagra approved and a huge reason why I was NOT at Comic Con this year, my best friend got married to her boyfriend of 7 years, and myself and my boyfriend were part of the wedding party. I spent Thursday preparing and Friday at a seriously awesome wedding. I had an amazing good time, and I even caught the bouquet, much to my boyfriend’s dismay. It was a great weekend.

But amongst my adventures in distracting myself, I discovered that there would be a book signing at Once Upon a Time Bookstore in Montrose, a city not too far from me. I try to stay as on top of book signings as I possibly can, which is why I get to a bunch of them.

But this one I was particularly excited about, because it was a signing with the one and only, John Barrowman, and his sister, Carole.

Now, John Barrowman, for those of you who don’t know, is most well known for portraying Captain Jack Harkness, a companion of the Doctor on Doctor Who, and one of the main characters in the spin off show, Torchwood. He also is currently acting on the CW adaptation of Green Arrow called Arrow.

url

I just learned very recently, because of this event, that John and his sister Carole, who is (or formerly was) an English professor, had written a middle grade adventure novel, and the sequel had just been released.

The books are called the Hollow Earth series, which so far include the debut novel, Hollow Earth and the sequel, Bone Quill. According to the authors, the series is planned as a trilogy. The series follows twins, Em and Matt, who have a deeper connection than most twins. They have a powerful imagination and when they draw, they can make things come to life and they can transport themselves into paintings. They think nothing of it, until their mom whisks them away to meet their grandfather, to be trained, and to be protected against those who mean them harm.

Sounds super awesome, right? I’m a little over halfway done with the book (at post time), and I am seriously enjoying it. Its very Harry Potter-Percy Jacksonish. Definitely meant for the middle grade age group, 8 to 12ish but that doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy them because I’m 25 and totally loving it so far.

So Monday night, my boyfriend and I trekked down to Once Upon a Time Bookstore (notably the oldest children’s bookstore in the USA, 47 years strong!) to meet the authors. I met up with my dear friend Jackie, who runs Seeking Bazinga, who had gotten there a bit earlier than us, and saved us a spot in line. The presentation was first come, first serve; we already had tickets for the signing.

photo-1

photo-2

The presentation was REALLY fantastic. John Barrowman has the same sort of humor that he shows when he is acting, and is like a big kid up there on stage. Carole is hilarious as well, and they really have an awesome sibling dynamic that had the entire audience cracking up the entire time. They talked a little bit about Comic Con, which they had both just attended, and where the idea of Hollow Earth came and took a couple questions from the audience. They then proceeded to read two different short parts from Bone Quill, and then there was the signing.

The signing was really great. When you purchased a book, which guaranteed you a ticket for the signing, it came numbered so you simply lined up in numerical order, which worked a lot better than I thought it would. The line also moved SUPER quickly, which I love. They told us that pictures could only be taken from the line, but when I reached the front, they were stopping to take a picture with each person who was meeting them.

1014464_406033306184204_122168779_n

They both were SO super nice, and funny. I swear, John Barrowman really embodies the character of Captain Jack Harkness, who is a HUGE flirt in Doctor Who, and flirts with women, men, aliens. He’s also a major flirt in real life as well :) But they were SO amazing to meet, and I fangirled a bit meeting one of my fave characters from DW. They signed my book, let me take a picture and sent me on my way. I was SUPER excited to meet them and it made for a great experience, and it really helped make up for missing out on Comic Con!

One last thing that was really cool: Carole talked about making time for their partners, and John interuppted her, saying “Husbands”. In the recent Supreme Court decision, both DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act) and Prop 8 in California were overturned, therefore making gay marriage legal in California. John is very recently married to his long time partner, Scott. Every one cheered for this, especially when John pretended to crumple up DOMA in a ball and threw it aside. Perfection.

photo

My beautiful signed book. My signed book collection seems to be growing and growing!

Now, of course I didn’t forget about all my awesome followers! I bought two books, in order to get two tickets for both myself and my boyfriend and I knew EXACTLY what to do with that extra copy of Hollow Earth. So stay tuned in TOMORROW, when I announce a giveaway for this extra signed copy.

*     *     *     *

Have any of you met John or Carole Barrowman before? How was it? Was it AWESOME? Have you read Hollow Earth yet? As always, share in the comments!

WhatANerdGirlSays Comic Con Wrap Up!

This past weekend was the San Diego Comic Con extravaganza in San Diego, recipe California. Comic Con has been going on for over forty years. I have gone before, cialis 40mg of course, and this year, I was unable to attend. I was really bummed at this for a very long time, but I was a bridesmaid in my best friend’s wedding, and honestly, it was an amazing time. I caught the bouquet and it was amazing, and I’m incredibly happy for her.

1011472_405412292912972_2128884030_n

But I know so many of you guys were unable to attend as well! So I wanted to gather as much news as I possibly could to share with you guys, who couldn’t go or may have been too busy to keep up, or just couldn’t keep up with the crazy amount of news that was coming our way this weekend.

Just a note: all articles linked will be from Hypable, which is one of my favorite sites to follow, and kept me SO updated during Comic Con.

So here we go:

Catching Fire Full Length Trailer is Released

We finally got our first full length trailer for the next installment of the Hunger Games movie! This movie will be hitting theaters in November. Cast members like Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Lenny Kravitz, Jena Malone and more were available during the panel and also for signings as well. They talked about different scenes they filmed and the various development of their characters.

Supernatural and Supernatural Spin-Off Series in the Works

url

I don’t know much about this show to be completely honest, because I’ve only watched the first couple seasons. From what I can tell, they talk a lot about the return of some characters, the idea of fallen angels, and the relationship between Dean and Sam. If you click the links above, you can find out way more information than I am able to share!

Details are in the bare minimum for the newly announced spin off show but apparently a new character will be introduced toward the end of the season that premieres on October 15th and the spin-off series will be based on this character.

The Marvel Panel Blows Everyone Away!

loki-comic-con-surprise-appearance

So Tom Hiddleston LITERALLY comes out, in FULL Loki costume, and milks it up, acting in his character for the entire couple minutes that he is up on stage. This was literally the only appearance he made so what an amazing rare treat that was. Of course, after, new footage of the Thor sequel was shown, the movie slated for a November release.

There was also cast appearances made for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and a full trailer shown. Hopefully we get the trailer VERY soon, because this is a movie I am definitely looking forward to.

The cast of Guardians of the Galaxy also made a SURPRISE appearance, where Karen Gillan of Doctor Who fame debuted her new hairstyle, and there was also a trailer.

Joss Whedon also came out and revealed the title of The Avengers sequel: The Avengers: Age of Ultron. He came out, showed an extremely short trailer that basically showed the Avengers reflected in the helmet of the villain, Ultron, and the title, and that was it. The film is set to release in May of 2015.

Surprise! Cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past Make an Appearance!

url

This is so exciting. I absolutely LOVED the first movie (its the only X-Men movie I own) and I haven’t heard much of what is going on for the second movie. A huge number of cast members made a surprise appearance at Comic Con, as well as director Bryan Singer. Appearances included: Jennifer Lawrence, Evan Peters, Peter Dinklage, Sean Ashmore, Nicholas Hoult, Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, and Ellen Page.

Peter Dinklage, of Game of Thrones fame, has confirmed that he will be paying Bolivar Trask in the movie.

You can watch the entire surprise panel, which I believe, includes the full length trailer. It is low res but its better than nothing!

Doctor Who and Matt Smith’s Last Appearance

url-1

So Matt Smith basically is emotional feels the entire Comic Con weekend as he says good bye to everyone, as he just announced recently that he is leaving the show. The main focus of Doctor Who at Comic Con was the seriously anticipated 50th Anniversary special, which will be featuring Matt as the 11th Doctor and Jenna Louise Coleman as the current companion, but also David Tennant as the 10th Doctor and Billie Piper returning as former companion, Rose Tyler. Steven Moffat was on board to tease like crazy, telling us that he’s been lying his ass off for months about the special and that we could all be presuming wrong. They showed a trailer for the special, which hasn’t been released to the public yet, that includes banter between the two doctors, comparisons between their sonic screwdrivers, Daleks and more.

The Vampire Diaries: Season 5

TVDComicCon

Nothing overly new was announced at this, but they talked about the stuff that happened in season four, and talked a little bit about season four, what they liked about what happened, how they are going to explain some of the stuff, how other things are going to work out. I know this is super vague but I glanced through it quickly because I haven’t finished season 4 yet! Paul Wesley says he’s enjoying being a little evil, they have a plan for Jeremy’s story and more.

The Originals: A Vampire Diaries Spin Off

url

I don’t want to say too much because this article has a TON of spoilers if you haven’t finished watching the previous season of The Vampire Diaries but they obviously talked a lot about how this show came about and what to expect from it. The show was really built from the love that Daniel, Joseph and Claire have garnered in their characters on TVD. There is going to be a lot going in this spin off show, including episodes of flashbacks in previous TVD episodes, but told from different points of views. Read more above for full details!

Once Upon a Time-Season 3

url

Several videos were shown during the Once Upon a Time panel, including a preview for Season 3 and a parody of Good Morning, America but instead, Good Morning, Storybrooke. The teaser trailer shows an interaction between Leroy (Grumpy) and what is presumed to be Ariel (SO exciting). I am SO excited about this show, especially with so many of the characters traveling to Neverland, and a spinoff show premiering as well. You can watch all the different videos at the link above!

Ginnifer Goodwin says that Snow is focusing on herself this season, finding a balance to the good and bad in her. Lana Parilla says Regina makes her favorite kill this season. A love triangle between Emma, Hook and Neil is HEAVILY hinted and we will see Peter, the Darlings, Neverland and Tinker Bell. They also discuss including a LGBT relationship, but doing it in a very real and genuine way!

Good news as well: there won’t be so much mish-mash episodes like last season. There will be 11 episodes, a midseason break and then 11 episodes. Thank goodness.

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland

Once-Upon-a-Time-in-Wonderland-Comic-Con

We learn more about the Once Upon a Time spin off show. We focus more on Alice, but in the adult version of the character that we have grown to know in the adaptations that have already been made. The show is more of a cousin to Once Upon a Time, and less of a spinoff show. They say for now, there won’t be crossovers, but they haven’t completely ruled it out. An announcement that was made was Naveen Andrews, of Lost fame, is going to play Jafar.

Divergent: Movie News and Book News!

"Divergent" Panel - Comic-Con International 2013

The cast and author, Veronica Roth, gathered to talk about the movie and the last book coming out in November. The film has just finished up, and will be releasing in March of 2014. They talked about favorite moments during filming and who has been signed on for part two, Insurgent, though they couldn’t say too much, due to spoilers. Veronica Roth also confirmed that Allegiant, the last book, will be told in due point of views, Tris and Four. They also showed the very first footage of the film to be shown, though this has NOT been posted online.

Straight from Hypable, a description of the footage shown: The extended clip began with Tris’ jump onto and from the train as a new Dauntless with her friend Christina, and then continuing to volunteer and jump off the roof into Dauntless headquarters. The clip also introduced Four helping Tris off of the net, and Tris’s selection of her new identity. The clip continued into a sizzle reel of Dauntless training, complete with impressive flips, gunfighting, and crowdsurfing. Other snippets included a shot of Tris taking the Faction test and receiving her tattoos, and a shot of Kate Winslet as Erudite leader, Jeanine. The reel ended with Four hurling his knives at Tris, the final knife leaving her with blood on her ear.

Superman and Batman Movie Crossover!

superman-batman-new-logo

It was announced by director, Zack Snyder, this weekend that a Batman and Superman crossover movie, entitled World’s Finest, was in the making. It is being said as a sequel to the recently released Man of Steel, and Henry Cavill will be back as Superman. No word on who would play Batman, but Christian Bale has already he will not play the Caped Crusader again. Not much else is known, though this is the official logo, but they are aiming for a 2015 release.

Joss Whedon and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Agents-of-Shield-ABC-premiere-date1

One of the most highly anticipated shows, Agents of SHIELD made a surprise premiere of the pilot episode of the show, which will premiere on September 24th. Joss Whedon and the other guests were a bit reluctant to reveal details but Hypable did have a chance to sit down with them, and you can read all about it, if you click the link above.

The Amazing Spiderman 2

url

The directors, and a few members of the cast including Andrew Garfield and Jamie Foxx, hit Comic Con and discussed some of the questions that have been lingering in fan’s minds about the sequel. Jamie discusses what he wanted to accomplish with his character, Electro, and they talked about the need for both Gwen, played by Emma Stone, and Mary Jane Watson, played by Shailene Woodley. Woodley says she won’t return for part 3, but the producers say “time will tell.” Andrew Garfield also talked about Peter’s relationship with Gwen, and the possibility of Spiderman being gay, and exploring his sexuality. Read more above, for some really amazing insights to the new movie. The movie comes out May 2nd, 2014.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Panel

url

Not much was revealed as far as the movie goes, with the release date only weeks away, but the cast discusses filming and playing their different characters and things like that. Jamie talked about the vulnerability of Jace and how Clary brings that out in him. Kevin mentions how they all sort embody their characters and Godfrey Gao confirmed this weekend that the Magnus and Alec kiss that occurs during the time of City of Bones, but was written as an outside story, will be in the film. Very exciting. Check out the entire panel.

Game of Thrones

url-2

The cast and author George R.R. Martin gathered to talk about the previous season, the nominations that were handed out to them for the Emmys and what we can expect in the future. They mostly talked about all the drama and tragedy that occurs at the end of the previous season, entitled the Red Wedding,w here basically all the characters die. Martin says killing all these characters really gives actors more opportunities to explore their characters more, and break boundaries. Emilia was surprised to find out she had garnered a nomination and the actor who played her on-screen husband came up on stage to congratulate her. They talked a little about Sam and Jon, and how their characters are, and their motivations. George also talked about the two remaining books in the series and the possibility of a prequel. If he makes it that far ;)

The Legend of Korra Season Two

korra-season-2-feature

Now, I just saw Michael DiMartino a few weeks ago, and he was so tight lipped about The Legend of Korra, season two, but now I realized they were waiting to reveal all of this at Comic Con. They showed the entire first episode of season two, and announced that the show would return in September and will be called “Book 2: Spirits”.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Cover Reveal!

harry-potter-half-blood-prince-new-cover

I wrote a couple weeks ago about the anniversary covers of Harry Potter, with new artwork done by Kazu Kabuishi. I showed you all the covers that had already been revealed and now we finally have book six! The books are being released on August 27th, in a paperback box set. The last cover, for Deathly Hallows, will be shown at a party in New York City, celebrating Harry Potter’s birthday (and Jo’s!) on July 31st. It is open to the public, so if you are a Potterhead, and in the area, head on over!

Ender’s Game

"Enders Game" And "Divergent" Panels - Comic-Con International 2013

New footage of Ender’s Game, a Comic Con exclusive, was shown at the convention, with appearances by the director, producer, Harrison Ford, Hailee Steinfeld, and Asa Butterfield. The trailer is mostly about Ender, of course, and his training, but apparently there are glimpses of other characters as well. The audience asked a lot of questions about the film, especially of Orson Scott Card, but those were deflected easily. There were also a lot of questions aimed at Harrison Ford about Star Wars and Indiana Jones but those were deflected as well, but that makes a lot of sense. The guy is SO ready to move on.

Sherlock Season Three!

url

Neither Benedict Cumberbatch nor Martin Freeman were able to attend Comic Con but they had recorded a video message for the fans in attendance. However, Steven Moffat and the other guests, like Mark Gatiss who plays Mycroft Holmes, made up for it. Moffat says that Sherlock’s “death” has already been hinted at in season two and that the John and Sherlock reunion was his favorite part to make. However John is NOT going to be happy with Sherlock, of course, but his anger will be resolved by the end of episode one; they don’t want to drag it out. Moriarty is actually dead, and we will see more of Mycroft and Sherlock’s relationship as well as the relationship (not romantic) between Molly and Sherlock. The stars have also signed on for season 4, but of course, no word on that.

Firefly Video Game!

url-1

Oh yes, you heard that right, Browncoats. There is officially going to be a Firefly video game, releasing in the Summer of 2014. It is called Firefly Online and will be available on Android and iOS devices. There is not much more information besides that, but if you click the link, you can watch the trailer and you can find out how to register on the website for official updates!

*     *     *

There was SO much more on Comic Con, and I’m sure I only covered a drop in the bucket of what I’m sure was an amazing weekend. I hope that this was still helpful for everyone who was unable to make it to the convention or able to keep up with the constant updates.

I just wanted to shout out to my friend Becky for trying to get me Divergent and Hunger Games swag, what a rock star you are for even trying! I want to do a HUGE shout out to my girl, Erin, from That One Geek Girl, for thinking of me this weekend and doing the most amazing thing in the world by getting me a personalized autograph by the flippin gorgeous Godfrey Gao himself. Yes, the sexy man playing Magnus Bane in City of Bones. You are amazing, Erin, and I love you! You are such an amazing friend.

There could be more panels/autograph signings/etc. at Comic Con for YA authors but this is as far as I know, based on the Comic Con Schedule. Other authors I know have said they will be there but are probably doing signings at private booths.

I will update this list if I find out more information!

And everyone have fun at Comic Con!

Blogger Spotlight: Megan from The Nerdy Girlie

One of the best parts about running this blog is having the ability to meet some really cool people, this and some of the coolest people that I have met have led me to really cool blogs. I’ve said it before, about it no one’s blog is 100% original but everyone’s voices are different so there are blogs that I love to read because I love the writer, and I love the passion that they show for what they are writing. They are fun and interesting to read and they inspire me to get better and better in my blog.

So I decided to do a feature (inspired by Megan at the Nerdy Girlie’s Geek Girls Gab), where I profile the bloggers that I love. Not only do I get to find out more about them, but I also get to share them with you guys! Most of the bloggers that I follow are like me, nerd girls, fan girls and they enjoy the same things as me, and you! Every blogger that I profile is one that is super important to me and I urge you to check them out!

If you are interested in being featured on the Blogger Spotlight, feel free to contact me, please! I would love to hear from you!

Speaking of Megan at the Nerdy Girlie…I think that’s just who might be the featured blogger this week!

Sara: Tell me a little bit about your blog!

Megan: My blog is called The Nerdy Girlie where I nerd out about nerdy and girlie things!  Mostly nerdy though!  My favorite thing to share about is San Diego Comic Con!  I love helping new and old attendees with tips and tricks to have the best Comic Con ever!  My favorite girlie part of my blog is our Every Day Cosplay series.  In it I show you how to dress like your favorite nerd characters with your every day wardrobe.

Sara: What inspired you to start your blog/vlog/podcast

Megan: San Diego Comic Con inspired me to start The Nerdy Girlie.  I had been writing on a personal blog, but after my 4th year at SDCC I thought it was time to focus on my love of all things nerdy!  My blog has helped me grown in all of my fandoms and make some awesome new nerd friends along the way!

Sara: What is your favorite nerd memory?

Megan: My favorite nerd memories would have to be all centered around Comic Con.  It is there where I can let my fan girl out for a week and everyone understands!  The BEST memories of Comic Con are having been able to meet Zachary Levi, Sam Witwer and Joss Whedon.  I can’t wait for this year where I can finally meet all my twitter friends and maybe have more time with Zach?! :)

Sara: What are you most looking forward to, as far as new books/movies/etc?

Megan: Star Trek for Ben Cumberbatch, Thor 2 for Zachary Levi and of course Comic Con!

(note: interview was done prior to Star Trek release!)

Sara: As my blog is mostly about books and reading, what are some of your favorite books or authors to read?

Megan: Nicholas Sparks is my most favorite author.  I found him randomly in the book store one day while browsing and was a fan ever since.  I even got to meet him at a signing once.  The only famous author I have ever met.  Other favorite books would be Harry Potter, The Hunger Games and Twilight {yes yes…LOL}.  Dystopian would be my favorite genre to read.  I have been frequenting the library a lot lately and I love getting lost in the shelves.

The First Time I Found a Fandom: San Diego Comic Con

So one of the best parts of running this blog is meeting new people. I’ve met a ton of new friends who are fans of the similar fandoms of me, viagra dosage I’ve met people with writing goals like me and I’ve met a ton of nerd girl bloggers that are seriously awesome.

And I thought, website like this hey, and why not do some blog swaps? Why not help each other out?

So here is the first of some of the blog swaps I’ve started.

Megan is from The Nerdy Girlie, specializing in fandoms like Doctor Who, Firefly, Sherlock, Chuck and more. She also knows her way around San Diego Comic Con. Check it out below!

The First Time I Found a Fandom: San Diego Comic Con

By:  The Nerdy Girlie aka Megan

I had just recently moved to San Diego in January of 2009.  My husband is a professional and was able to get us both free passes to San Diego Comic Con almost on a whim.  That first year I was a total NOOB. It was our first full day in Ballroom 20 and the very first, and only panel we didn’t come to see, was Chuck.  Zachary Levi grabbed my attention immediately with his love and kindness toward his fans.  Adam Baldwin kept making jokes alluding to Firefly.  With that I went home and caught up on Chuck and Firefly and my nerdiness has been growing ever since.

In 2010 we attended Comic Con again, and you could say I was still a newbie con goer.  We stayed inside the convention center the entire con, but this time we did attend all five days, preview night included.  I did my first official early rise for the Chuck panel in Ballroom 20 where we saw them only one year earlier.  Twitter became my best friend that year.  By following Nathan Fillion, I was able to see a tweet he sent out just as we were about to leave for the day.  He was at the CA Browncoats booth signing Serenity comics.  I grabbed the fellow Browncoat of our group and we RAN flat out from one side of the convention center to the other and got in line.  We were able to get Nathan to sign my Serenity comic.  I was officially HOOKED on San Diego Comic Con!

 SDCC.2010.TNG

I would have to say I began to get more obsessed in 2011.  It’s a bit harder when you have others with you, and you all want to do different things, like sleep in.  But they all quickly learned the first rule of Comic Con is that you do NOT sleep in!  That year it seemed you had to get to the con earlier and earlier to get a good seat — or a seat at all.  We entirely skipped Ballroom 20 that year, and instead hit up the Hilton Bayfront Indigo Ballroom.  Arriving at 6 a.m. still left us about 200 deep in line.  I got to meet my very first celebrities {the cast of Being Human U.S.} and had a blast at Nerd HQ.  We did not plan to go to any of their panels, but thanks again to Twitter, I saw that the Nathan Fillion panel had extra seats right before it was to begin.  We were able to get in and have Joshua Gomez and Ryan McParlin sit directly behind us!

 SDCC.2012.TNG.2

Every Comic Con I attend keeps getting better and better.  I learn so much more every year, get to see more celebs, and learn what dedication to a fandom really means.  In 2012, I was one of the thousands in line to see the 10th anniversary Firefly panel.  I again turned to my best friend Twitter for an estimate on when to arrive.  Some said 5 a.m., some said 1 a.m.  We ended up arriving in line at 2 a.m. with sleeping bags in tow.  I got a bit of sleep, but was awakened to shouts of “Joss is here!”  What a way to wake up!  I was able to get his autograph and a picture with him.  I was pleasantly surprised by how sweet and kind he was.  Thanking everyone for camping out and keeping Firefly alive.  He had one of the highest grossing films of all time and he took the time to walk a fan line at 3 o’clock in the morning.  That’s Comic Con in a nut shell.  Fans and the people they love coming together and spreading the love.

 SDCC.2012.TNG

2013 will be my fifth year at San Diego Comic Con and I can only hope that it continues on its upward climb of awesomeness.  If anything I just am glad to be there with awesome nerds and if I can share what I have learned with just one person and help them have a great con, I will be happy.
