Today’s YALL Fest Interview is with Shannon Hale!


Shannon Hale is a best selling author of both children and young adult books, such as The Goose Girl, Book of a Thousand Days, and most notably, Princess Academy, which was a Newbury Honor recipient. She’s also written the book, Austenland, which was recently adapted as a major motion picture by Sony Pictures, starring Keri Russell. Austenland follows Jane, who is obsessed with Jane Austen, and Pride and Prejudice, especially the BBC adaptation featuring Colin Firth. She goes on this trip that caters to the Jane-obsessed women and find herself struggling to keep up.

Q: Describe your book in five words

A: Boarding school for child of famous fairytales.

Q: Best writing tip you ever received? 

A: People remember a story for its characters.

Q: What one young adult novel do you wish you had as a teen? Why? 

A: The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart. Its smart, engaging, and discusses so many things I was struggling with.

Q: Tell us five random facts about yourself. 

A: I have four kids (including identical girl toddler twins). My husband likes to wear masks and hide around the house to scare me. I like to read while lying on my belly. I love the sky. I’m not a very good speller.

Q: What are you working on now? 

A: The third Princess Academy book.
