Blogger Spotlight: Paulina from I Am Divergent

One of the best parts about running this blog is having the ability to meet some really cool people, check and some of the coolest people that I have met have led me to really cool blogs. I’ve said it before, no one’s blog is 100% original but everyone’s voices are different so there are blogs that I love to read because I love the writer, and I love the passion that they show for what they are writing. They are fun and interesting to read and they inspire me to get better and better in my blog.

So I decided to do a feature (inspired by Megan at the Nerdy Girlie‘s Geek Girls Gab), where I profile the bloggers that I love. Not only do I get to find out more about them, but I also get to share them with you guys! Most of the bloggers that I follow are like me, nerd girls, fan girls and they enjoy the same things as me, and you! Every blogger that I profile is one that is super important to me and I urge you to check them out!

So welcome to the first ever, Blogger Spotlight :)

Paulina, a big Divergent fan, claims herself as part of the Amity Faction.

“My faction is amity so I decided to gather up my red and yellow wardrobe and take some amity pictures! Also features some Amity peace bread and a necklace with the faction symbol.”

Sara: Tell me a Little Bit About Yourself:

Paulina: Hi I’m Paulina! I run IamDivergent.com (a Divergent fansite) and I love books, movies, food and people. I love Divergent because it rocks (ok that’s not the only reason but bear with me, trying to keep this “short” &  “little” ;) ). I have always been an overall fangirl and I’m loving every part of it. I’m 17 and I live in So Cal and I’m trying to make life as fun as it can be. Fun facts! I was born in Mexico and I play the oboe. Woo!

Sara: Tell me about your blog:

Paulina: I am Divergent is a Divergent fansite that follows the latest news & updates related to the Divergent trilogy. (You can get your daily dose of Tris, Four and the rest of the gang at the site!). It is also a good source of material, the site features information about Divergent (Book & Movie), Insurgent, Allegiant, Free Four, Useful Links and more. Basically all you need if you’re feeling Divergent!

Sara: What inspired you to start your blog?

This is me meeting Veronica Roth. That wasn’t the first time I met her, but it was the first time I could get my book signed and act like a foolish fangirl. I didn’t have to “act cool” thank goodness. I’m bad at that.

Paulina: When I read Divergent I immediately fell in love. I loved it so much, everything about it, and I wanted so badly to be a part or to be involved in the world of Divergent somehow. I had followed fansites for other series in the past and I loved every part of them. I would watch how the fansites would bring people together with common interests and passions and how useful and genuine they fansites all were. I suddenly realized how much I wanted to have my own fansite, how much I wanted to do that for others, especially for a series like Divergent that I fell in love with so strongly. I realized there were already other really great and amazing Divergent fansites out there, but I wanted to be a part of it so badly that I just went for it. And I’m so glad I did! Everyone has been so welcoming and kind. Being a part of a fandom, especially this one, is one of the best things that has ever happened to me in life.

Sara: What is your favorite nerd memory?

Paulina: My favorite nerd memory is when I camped out for the Hunger Games premiere in March last year. That was basically my introduction to nerd-life. I was a noob when I went but I quickly realized I belonged there (I was with my people!). Everyone at school told me I was crazy for camping out in the streets of Downtown LA for a movie, or for waiting in line for hours just to get a glimpse at the awesome people who brought the book to life but that’s when I realized that they’re not as cool as us. Nerd life is much more fun and I made so many life long friendships at the camp out I was surprised I hadn’t tried it sooner. That will forever be my favorite memory because it introduced me to this awesome fun life I am living now.

The third and fourth pictures were at the hunger games camp out. A group of us that met through facebook met up on Saturday night, March 10th, 2012 (yes, I remember the exact date) at Starbucks then went across the street and started the line for the camp out at 1 am. We stayed up all night till we could “officially” begin camping out at 6 am on Sunday. We were the first 22 in line, group 22, and we are still really close friends to this day!

Sara: What are you most looking forward to, as far as new books/movies/etc?

Paulina: ALLEGIANT & DIVERGENT MOVIE (AAAH!)

Sara: As my blog is mostly about books and reading, what are some of your favorite books or authors to read?

Paulina: Divergent (duh), The Hunger Games, Twilight, The Host. I haven’t read The Mortal Instruments yet but I already know I’ll love it. So might as well put it on the list.

This picture is of my mom, my dad, my cousin and me camping out for Breaking Dawn Part 2! I love that picture because it shows that I’m not the only nerd in the family. We’re all just and crazy and fun and loving and nerdy! A fangirl family!

Sara: What are some of your favorite blogs to follow?

Paulina: WhataNerdGirlSays! ;) FangirlFeeels, CityofShadowhunters, SmittenKitchen & 101Cookbooks (i’m a foodie too).

Sara: Who is your fictional crush (what, we’re nerd girls, we all have one!)

Paulina: Is this even a question, um… FOUR. I don’t usually crush on the main character, i’m a side character gal, but Four stole my heart! And Theo James who will play him is so perfect. I can’t wait to see him as Four!

One Last Word from Paulina:

Shout out to Sara (whatanerdgirlsays) who is awesome! Thanks for including me in this!

The One Rule to Rule them All

Thanks to my friend, discount Tanya, for that name. Its a badass way to describe what I’m about to talk about.

Here’s the thing:

It took me a long to come to terms with who I am: as a person, as a writer, as a daughter, as a sister, as a friend, as a girlfriend, as a complete nerd and as a bisexual. All of those things were hard.

And its going to sound crazy, but that hardest one was embracing the nerd in me.

I’ve always been that nerd. I’m that kid in school that no one remembers because I was too busy with my head in a book. I read A LOT. And for the longest time, people made fun of me and teased me and bullied me because I liked to read, because I was obsessed with Harry Potter and Star Wars, because I got excited about those things. I literally was teased all the time.

Now those things are cool. That’s a whole ‘nother blog post, man. I could go on and on about this new phase of geek is cool and fake geek girls/guys. But that’s the point of this post.

The point is, it took me a long time to embrace my inner nerd. But I have. Oh believe me I have.

I love Harry Potter and Star Wars and Doctor Who and Hunger Games and what little I know about superheroes and I love Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit and I love Percy Jackson and the Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices and Firefly and Glee and The Walking Dead and Once Upon a Time and I love books and I love anime and I love video games.

And you know what? I like Twilight too.

And I’m not afraid to say that anymore. They are some of the most horribly written books ever, my god. The writing in those books is terrible! But they’re entertaining and I like them. I’m seeing Breaking Dawn Part 2 tonight at 10 pm (no midnight for this old lady) and I am pretty stoked about it.

And I’m tired of all the judgement. I’m tired of the Potterheads vs the Twihards. I’m tired of Star Wars vs Star Trek. I am so damn tired of everyone bagging on everyone else’s fandoms.

I’m not guiltless. I’ve done that before. I’m not blameless. I have definitely judged on fandoms before.

I don’t get Star Trek at all. I think a lot of the young adult paranormal romance is terrible. I think the Call of Duty game needs to go away because paying 60 bucks for the same game over and over again is ridiculous. I do think Twilight is a bad book. Its just bad. I think its entertaining oh but don’t you dare ever tell me its better than Potter because that’s crazy talk.

But here’s the thing: if you stand up, and say proudly that you are a Twihard or you’re a hardcore COD fan or you’re a Trekkie…I gotta say, that’s badass. I want to see your badass Trekkie tattoos. I want to see your walls papered with posters. I want to see your COD and Halo cosplays. I want to see that.

Because if there is one thing that I’ve learned from being a nerd and being involved in all these fandoms and being exposed to all these fandoms is that I’d say 9 out of 10 times, the fandoms preach tolerance and togetherness. We have to work together to make things work. We have to tolerate and accept and respect each other.

And that’s what the rule is:

I don’t care what fandoms you do or don’t like. I don’t care how strongly you feel about it. You are more than welcome to have your opinion. If you think Harry Potter, Twilight, Percy Jackson, Star Wars, Star Trek, whatever, sucks, that’s okay.

But its never, never okay to disrespect a person for the fandom they enjoy. Never. I do not tolerate any disrespect or intolerance on this page. That includes my Facebook page, my Twitter page or my Tumblr page.

It’s called respect. Kindness. Tolerance. Acceptance. RESPECT.

Here at WhataNerdGirlSays, we welcome people of all fandoms. I may not spend a lot of attention on some fandoms because it is my personal blog and it’s not something that I get excited for but I welcome you to this blog. If you’re a nerd, you’re welcome.

Because nerds need to stick together. Together, we can accomplish a lot. Divided, we’re just going to spend way too much time online, arguing over which fandom is better.

Especially since Harry Potter is the best one.

Just kidding. Or am I…

The point is, I’m tired of people hiding the things they like because they’re afraid to be made fun of. I’m tired of those brave enough to come out and say what they love getting attacked. Especially since I’ve been on both sides.

So let’s stop. Let’s band together and unite as nerds, no matter what we like.

What do you say?

Bond! Ironman! Les Mis! Comic Books!

It isn’t even Tuesday yet but I’m bursting with nerdy and fandom awesomeness. In just the last two days, price I’ve experienced some super exciting things! There is just always so much going on and so much excitement.

I think that’s one of the best things about being a nerd, visit web is being able to get excited about new movies and new shows and all that. It keeps life exciting.

So my boyfriend and I went to watch Skyfall last night. The new James Bond movie.

I’m not going to sit here and lie and say that I’m a huge James Bond fan. I’m not. I’ve seen my fair share in the movies (my god, Sean Connery was a fine looking man back in the day) and I think Daniel Craig is a good James Bond, though that does have something to do with the fact that he is very, very good looking.

But beyond that, it was a super awesome movie. The plot was exciting, all of the actors were great. It was full of fantastic actors: Judi Dench, Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes, Javier Bardem, Helen McCrory, and so on. A relatively unknown actor, Ben Whishaw, who played Bond’s assistant, Q, was most impressive in his acting skills…and is very impressive for the eyes as well. He had that nerdy, quirkiness that I love in an actor.

It was action packed but story driven as well. Its no wonder that critics have been praising this movie. Definitely one to go see, seriously.

But some of the best awesomeness were the trailers before the movie.

Ironman 3. I adore Robert Downey Jr and I have a serious soft spot for Ironman. Ironman gave out the same year as The Dark Knight. I remember everyone being like WHOA The Dark Knight and WHOA Heath Ledger as the Joker! And don’t get me wrong, thats a badass movie. But I was like WHOA Ironman and WHOA hot Robert Downey Jr. I don’t care how old he is, he is hot. And he plays Tony Stark so well, and the first two Ironman movies are great, and I loved Avengers! This trailer shows an obvious change in Stark. He is not the man he was before. What happened in New York, with the rest of the Avengers, has obviously shaken him and there is a lot he is going to have to deal with now. This trailer left me breathless and excited. I can’t wait for May 3rd!

I tried to put a link up for the next trailer but it wouldn’t link up. Super lame. I’ll just describe it then…

It was quite a preview, more just an extended look at the movie adapation of the insanely popular Broadway musical, Les Miserables. I ADORE musicals (much to the annoyance of my boyfriend haha) and its a huge disappointment to me that I have never seen this musical on stage! I’ve listened to the soundtrack a million times though and I can’t wait to see this movie! It has amazing people in it: Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Siegfried, Hugh Jackman and so many more. I love the fact that they sang the songs while acting instead of lip synching to a previously recorded soundtrack. Fantastic.

And today, I went to the comic book store grand opening of my good friend Glynnes’ store, Comic Book Hideout.

I am way proud of my friend. In this day and age, people have a hard enough time finding a job, let alone actually opening up a business. It just doesn’t happen anymore. But I am stoked that she was able to do it and it looks GREAT! Wall to wall comics and toys and shirts! She has a comfy sofa with a flat screen TV, playing superhero movies and a couple retro arcade game machines and pinball machines set up. Its a nerd haven and definitely a cool place to hang out.

And I’m just SO PROUD of her. She’s not much older than me and I just think it rocks. What an awesome thing. Definitely click the link above, and check her out and stop by. Its going to seriously rock! :D

Stay tuned for Anime Monday, The Tuesday Three and I’ll review Breaking Dawn Part 2 and the City of Bones trailer. Hope you’re all looking forward to it!

Keep it nerdy :D

The Tuesday Three

Sorrrrrry guys, order my Tuesday Three post is going to barely make it into the actual hours of Tuesday haha.

I was watching the presidential election. I literally was biting my nails down to basically nothing, cheap watching the election.

Obama won :D And I’m happy. And I will leave it at that.

So welcome to the Tuesday Three.

1. The Walking Dead, this Episode 4

Okay, I think I may be done with this show. So many people watched this episode (SPOILER ALERT) and felt something. THE FEELS. Yeah, there were no feels from my end at all. I seriously felt nothing…except once. I was really pissed when they killed off T-Dog. Man, that was one character that had been around for soooo long and I really liked and they didn’t give him enough of a story and then they killed him off! The one black man! So lame. So lame! Ugh, and then they give Lori this, like, noble death. I hated Lori and I didn’t care at all that she died. The baby should have died seriously. Ugh and then Carol might be dying and Rick suddenly is like NO, LORI! It’s just such a messy and dumb episode. Honestly, I’m seriously over this show. Ugh. Its only on my mind and on this Tuesday’s Three because it was so damn horrible and it made me mad.

2. City of Bones Teaser Trailer Announced.

So the City of Bones teaser trailer has an official date of air; it will, indeed, be released and shown before Breaking Dawn: Part 2. Now, I had an inkling to see this movie. Why? Curiosity, maybe? I did read this books, I did enjoy them. They aren’t life changing books, they aren’t even well-written books but they’re entertaining enough. And I’m adult enough to realize that Edward Cullen is kind of psycho and no boy on earth acts like that. My boyfriend loves me a whole lot and trust me, he doesn’t act like that haha. But anyway, I decided to go and see Breaking Dawn Part 2 so now I’m insanely excited because the preview for City of Bones will premiere before Breaking Dawn. I seriously cannot wait to see this. If you guys hadn’t seen this yet, I got my TMI tattoo yesterday, I posted a blog about this here. So I’m really super excited about being able to see what they’ve done to my beloved Mortal Instruments series.

3. The Hobbit

Tickets for midnight premieres for The Hobbit come out on Friday, at least over where I live. I am super super super stoked about this! My friends and I over at the good ol LADA are going to have some serious Hobbit feasting before the movie and then see the movie at midnight. I have extremely high hopes for this movie: Peter Jackson rocked the Lord of the Rings series and I seriously think he is going to rock this movie as well. So I’m getting excited for hobbitness. I’m about to re-read the book again. Plus we have Martin Freeman as Bilbo and Benedict Cumbercatch is to make an appearance in one of the three films. I am more than happy to see these awesome guys. Now can they get back to work for Sherlock already?

What’s going on in your guys’ worlds this week? Any shows getting exciting? Let me know what you’re thinking!
