Book Event: Matthew Thomas and Misha Collins!

Hello everyone! I’m so excited to be writing about a super fun event that I attended yesterday at the Barnes and Noble, approved The Grove location.

A few weeks ago, more about I was at the Josephine Angelini event, talking with the event coordinator, Lita. Lita is SUCH a rock star, I always enjoy all the events I attend of hers and she was talking about the events that were coming up at the store. She asked me if I knew who Misha Collins was, and if I would attend an event with him.

Promo-Castiel-4x03-angels-of-supernatural-9370710-951-1450

Of course I know Misha! I immediately got the barest of details about the event, told my friend Alena that she just had to get the day off, and immediately started making plans.

Now as more details about the event came out, it turned out that the event would be centered around debut author, Matthew Thomas, whose freshman novel, We Are Not Ourselves, is making some serious waves all over the country and parts of the world as well. As I learned last night, its been translated into 14 languages and counting.

Well, Misha got his hands on an advanced copy, from Matthew, whom he went to college with. He picked it up and absolutely loved it, and is now doing everything he can, taking time out of his own busy schedule, to spread the world about this book.

And I thought…okay, that’s seriously badass. And while I do definitely want to meet Misha, I think that if he loves this author and this book so much, I should be there. And I decided to go.

1798514_715896948499168_7619875574400438931_n

My friend Alena and I headed down the Grove a few hours before the event. I had friends that had been in line since midnight, but luckily, I already had my wristband situation figured out. We picked up our wristbands, bought our books and grabbed some iced teas from Starbucks. We enjoyed a nice lunch at the farmer’s market (where my friend had never been, so it was totally fun to watch her eyes get all wide), and then we headed back to the store.

We managed to score two front row seats (a nerd girl never reveals her secrets), and got ready for the event to start. The excitement was palpable and I was really nervous that people were so excited about Misha that they wouldn’t give the proper attention to the actual author.

But more on that later.

One of the security guys, George, decided to read us part of Marlene, Marlene, Queen of Mean, by Jane Lynch, to keep us entertained while we were waiting for the start of the event.

Then one of the booksellers got up and read to us from the book “The Day the Crayons Quit” by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers. See, the crayons are threatening to quit. They’re feeling overworked or not worked at all! Barnes and Nobles, The Grove is hosting the author on Tuesday and you were able to write a letter to the crayons, asking them not to quit (more on that later). We find out tomorrow if they quit! Its actually a totally adorable children’s book and I bought myself a copy because it was SO cute!

And yes, that’s me holding the book!

for post this time

They brought Matthew and Misha and for some reason, they brought out the Cat in the Hat. I like this picture because they both look so awkward haha. Like, why am I posing with a person in a cat suit…BUT Misha did get a bit excited about seeing it and called someone up and they brought his son, West, up to meet him and I captured a pretty adorable moment.

10606475_715897975165732_6277061169339505694_n

Seriously. How freakin cute is this? Literally this is right in front of my face. I actually had to lean back a bit to get the picture.

for post again and again

Then began the book discussion. Misha talked about how he knew Matthew, how he came to the book and how he honestly fell in love with it so much that he wants as many people to read it as possible. Matthew thanked Misha for being there, and for bringing all the people (there were a TON of people there), and all that. Matthew’s book is about an Irish-Catholic family, focused on the main character of Eileen, and her relationship with her father, who eventually goes through Alzheimer’s, and her relationship with the world in general. It sounds absolutely fantastic, and two different readings were done from the book, and I honestly can’t wait to dive into this book, even as a mostly YA book reader.

Matthew read a part in the novel that was a letter from Ed, the father, and it took a lot of effort not to cry. It was touching, and it was telling to the fact that their relationship was a huge central point of the novel. Misha also talked about some of his favorite parts, getting choked up himself. Seeing people get emotional or passionate about a particular book always gives me the desire to read it even more. Seeing people get worked up about books is exactly the way I feel sometimes and I pay attention to that.

But what really impressed me about all of this was…I was massively worried about the audience. I would say 99.9% of the audience was there because of Misha, myself included. I would not even had heard of this signing if it had not been for Misha’s name on it. That being said, I was there not only to meet Misha, but to celebrate an author, as a fellow hopefully soon to be published one day author. I was worried that the other fans would ignore the author in favor for Misha and I was so pleasantly surprised when they asked questions, deep, specific, thought provoking questions, about the novel. I truly enjoyed that. I know that majority of the attendees were there for Misha BUT a ton of books were sold and I hope a good percentage of those sold books will be read as well.

The signing started, and unfortunately, I was unable to get a picture with Matthew :( Oh well. But I did have a moment to talk to him and I asked him what his advice is for those getting a bunch of “no”s in response to query letters, and he told me “Just keep going, don’t give up.” I love hearing that.

Now, while Misha wasn’t signing (which I think is a GOOD idea), but he was willing to take pictures with us. Because I’m such a nifty selfie taker, I managed to get two pretty cute selfies with Misha, which I’m massively happy about it.

For Post

I also made sure to get my hands on a letter to write to the crayons, asking them not to quit! I can’t wait to find out tomorrow what happens next ;)

10710880_715897941832402_270873877281511679_n

All in all, I had a wonderful time, picked up two new books, had fun hanging out with a friend, and met two incredible men, and just went home happy and satisfied. I’ve said it before and I’ll probably say it again and again and again but I always love going to events at this location. Its not close to me, and I usually have to leave really early in order to avoid the traffic that ensues around Los Angeles, and the actual Grove can be chaotic and parking can get expensive but its always, always, always worth it. I always have an amazing time and that’s due to Lita and her amazing team.

Besides, I’ll be back there tomorrow for The Day the Crayons Quit and Kami Garcia’s second novel! And we’ll have much more fun again :)

Fandom Friday-Supernatural

The Fandom Friday is a weekly feature, information pills with each blog post written by a new contributor. This is the weekly post where either myself, ailment or a guest blogger, diagnosis talks about a new fandom. See, I’ve had the experience in my life where I’ve been made fun or put down about my particular fandoms. And that has made me feel pretty crappy. But I’ve also put down other fandoms as well.

So I’ve decided to change that. I’m opening my world up to new fandoms, and the best way to do that is to bring people in to write about various fandoms. I’m very excited about this segment.

If you guys are interested in becoming a guest blogger for the Fandom Friday, feel free to email me at whatanerdgirlsays at gmail.com or contact me HERE

This week’s contributor is Jackie, also know as Bazingirl, from the nerd blog, Seeking Bazinga. She will be writing all about the extremely popular show, Supernatural. Check it out!

Supernatural

One of the early fandoms I came into when I started to embrace my true inner geek, was Supernatural. And I’m not speaking of supernatural things in general, though I do have a personal tendency to gravitate towards things paranormal, I’m speaking the AMAZING TV show, created by Eric Kripke, Supernatural.

Supernatural starts off following two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester on a quest to find their father who has gone missing. John Winchester, their father, was on a hunting trip…but he wasn’t hunting for wildlife. He was hunting the paranormal, the things that go bump in the night and the things in your closet that scare you to death, but more specifically he was hunting the yellow eyed demon who killed his wife and maybe not so coincidentally, Sam’s college girlfriend, Jessica.

Leaving behind his leather journal, which houses every shred of knowledge John knows about the supernatural, he essentially passes on the torch to his sons, Sam and Dean, to continue the family business – saving people; hunting things.

While the boys search for their dad, they drive around in Dean’s 1967, black Chevy Impala (or as the fandom calls it, the Metallicar, because of Dean’s love of classic rock on cassette tape, no less) looking for supernatural things to hunt down and kill. All of the first season deals with Urban Legends like Bloody Mary, Hook Man, Woman in White or Weeping Woman, Wendigo, Skinwalkers, Cursed Indian Burial Grounds, Killer Scarecrows, Shtriga (child soul sucking witches) and even a couple of way nerded out guys who think they’re paranormal investigators like the guys from Ghost Hunters or Ghost Adventures.

As for the Fandom istelf…Supernatural has some of the most RABID fans on the internet today. It all started with the fact the the two protagonists are INCREDIBLY dreamy looking.

Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester:

and Jensen Ackles as his older brother, Dean Winchester:

These are pictures from Season One, which debuted in 2005 and they are now filming it’s 9th season. They boys have since both gotten married and Jensen now has a baby boy, named Justice Jay Ackles. The thing is? The guys have only gotten better looking as they’ve gotten older. Which sends the mostly female fans into fits of drooling. Trust me, I used to be one of the rabid drooling fans. Well, I still kind of am, especially since well, they look even better in person!!!

After season one, the fandom started going very heavily slash, which for those of you who don’t know wikipedia describes it thusly:

Slash fiction s a genre of fan fiction that focuses on interpersonal attraction and sexual relationships between fictional characters of the same sex.

And Wincest was born. According to SuperWiki:

Wincest is the term commonly used to describe fanfiction (or other fanworks) that depict or assume a romantic or sexual (i.e. Slash) relationship between Sam and Dean Winchester. It is the most popular pairing in Supernatural fandom, along with Destiel or Dean/Castiel.

Now, we won’t get to Castiel until his first appearance in Episode 1, Season 4 Lazarus Rising. But I don’t want to get into much after Season One, because well, you really just need to watch the series to understand all the stuff these brother go through to save people.

Now, one of the greatest things about this show, and one of the m any reasons the fans love it so much, is that like real brothers, Sam and Dean banter. They tease each other mercilessly, and then turn around and have moments of sincere and heart wrenching emotion, which makes them seem so real to us, the viewer. Especially Jensen, as Dean. One of the most touching scenes in the first season is when Dean calls his dad and asks for help, which occurs in Episode 9, “Home.” All we’ve seen Dean do up to this point is be kind of the jerk you hate to love, and in “Home” we see him scared and emotional and for the first time, vulnerable. And it’s AMAZING. Because Dean doesn’t let his guard down. He plays everything close to the chest, because if he didn’t, he wouldn’t be able to get out of bed in the morning. He covers up his feelings with humor. That’s just the way he is.

Sam on the other hand, is much more able to show his feelings openly. We see him as extremely vulnerable to begin with because he gave up hunting to try and have a normal life, going off to Stanford on a full scholarship. He hides his past from his friends, yes, but he still shows them who he really is. Everyone he meets gets a real piece of Sam upfront.

The relationship between the two brothers is vastly complex as it is with most siblings, but when you add that they’ve never had a real “home,” that they spent their lives on the road learning from their dad how to hunt all the bad things out there, you can see how that kind of life has taken it’s toll on each brother in different ways.

The relationship between the brothers is what keeps the show alive and fresh, I think. The plot has taken so many twists and turns, introduced so many memorable characters both good and evil, that the only constant is the brothers’ love for one another and their inherent sense of duty to keep people safe from evil. The show could not continue without BOTH of the Winchester Brothers. They are the glue of the show, they are the reason the fans tune in every week to watch, and they are the reason we just LOVE this show.

I hope you all enjoyed this week’s edition of the Fandom Friday!

Check out previous weeks here, and read last week’s all about Harry Potter, because I love Harry Potter and nobody wanted to write a FF so there you go!

Happy Friday everyone!

Nerd Ink, Part Two!

So this week has been hard as far as blog posts have gone. I’ve been writing a lot of these at the beginning of the week, order and scheduling them to be posted on the day that they are supposed to be posted. My best friend is getting married today (tomorrow, page from my perspective) and I’m just SO busy. I was also unable to find a contributor for the Fandom Friday this week, tadalafil so I have a little something special instead!

Over a year ago, I did a post, featuring a lot of my friends and their nerd ink. Way before I joined the Los Angeles Dumbledore’s Army and started this blog, I didn’t know a lot of people with nerd ink. I knew a few people online, and maybe a couple in real life, but I wasn’t as immersed in the world. As soon as I joined LADA, I saw SO many Harry Potter tattoos, and I felt like…yay, my family!

Then as my nerd endeavors have increased due to this blog, I’ve met more and more people with tattoos and I love it. So far, I have six tattoos.

73306_403289596458575_187512155_n

All of my tattoos so far are fandom related (mostly). My first tattoo was the Deathly Hallows symbol, which is on my right wrist. My second tattoo was “wit beyond measure” under that, and “man’s greatest treasure” on my left wrist, also from Harry Potter. The third one I got was “The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death” from Harry Potter, as well, the quote on Harry Potter’s parents’ gravestone, paired with page stars. The fourth one I got was the Rebellion Alliance symbol from Star Wars. The fifth one I got was “Always”, also from Harry Potter, on my ankle. The musical notes are the only non-fandom part, they are musical notes from “Konstantine” by Something Corporate. The last and most recent tattoo that I got was the Fearless rune tattoo from The Mortal Instruments series.

I won’t go into detail for each tattoo, but I will say there are two main reasons I got each tattoo. One is that they all come from fandoms that mean a LOT to me. Harry Potter, Star Wars and Mortal Instruments have all played important parts in my life and getting permanent ink shows my love for those series. But I also got them because they all kind of have something to do with fear and courage. I can be a fearful person and I got these as a way to learn to overcome all the fears I have, from the fear of spiders to my fear of failing and being left alone.

*     *     *

Now I have a ton of tattoos to share with you! These are some seriously awesome people, with equally awesome tattoos!

Also, if you click on the person’s name, you’ll reach their blogs, Twitters, etc. so make sure to follow them!

A bookworm because she loves books!

Galaxy Fox

(yes, that’s her real name)

My tattoo is Wolverine from the classic animated series.

I got this because I am a huge comic book and X-Men fan! And also because I feel I closely relate to Wolverine’s character in and out of costume. We have the same way of dealing with our pain and we are both very intuitive and strong willed people.

My tattoo is the ship from Galaga.

Story behind this isn’t all that interesting but basically i’m a huge nerd and wanted to get a tattoo that reminded me of my dad, my dad used to play a SHIT TON of galaga back in the day. He talks about it all the time, always looks for the game at arcades we go to and my earliest memory of him was that he got a port of the game for the PC and he and i would play it even though i was only 3 years old. means a lot to me. hope to get more nerdy tattoos but this ones my first.

It’s the name of my favourite character ever, Castiel (from the TV show Supernatural) written in Circular Gallifreyan, the alphabet featuerd in another favourite show, Doctor Who.
Why I got it: I was planning on something Supernatural related but changed my mind the night before I had the appointment to get inked, and picked this one. Castiel is my favourite character of all time, and as an illustrator/designer, I find Gallifreyan writing fascinating and extremely beautiful. Plus, Doctor Who and Supernatural are the two shows that have helped me during the most difficult times of my life, and have literally saved me from losing my mind. This tattoo will always mean the world to me.

Mimi Schweid

This is the Dark-Hunter Double Bow and Arrow, the Fearless rune and Angelic Power Rune. The double bow and arrow is for my love for Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark-Hunter series. She’s a dyslexic author that is always on the best seller list and I hope to one day be like her. The Angelic power, the one underneath it is a victory tattoo for surviving my first year of college and the Fearless on my right wrist was for starting college/a new chapter in my life.

My tattoo is of Sputnik II and Laika, who became the first animal and living organism larger than a microbe to be launched into orbit. She died within hours after launch of overheating but because of her it paved the way for human spaceflight.

Why you got the tattoo: I got the tattoo because I love space and the exploration of space, but without Laika and Sputnik II our discoveries could have come at a later time. This was to honor her memory and her death to further help our understanding of the cosmos and our place in the universe.

My tattoo is from supernatural, it’s the protection symbol that Sam and Dean have, Castiels wings, and I chose Latin writing because they always use Latin in the show, and it says “carry on my wayward son” which is the theme song :)
I got it because supernatural is my favorite show and felt I needed something to express it :)

I got this at the same time as my best friend. We’ve both been through hellish times, my sister broke her spine, her brother died in a car accident but through it all we were there got each other through thick and thin, true parabatais. I’d be lost without her.

I got this quote because I’ve spent my life shying away from anything that could hurt me. I got this tattoo when i decided the time was right to go to university to remember no matter how scary it is at the end of it something amazing will happen.

Bethany

The first one is from the anime, D.Gray-Man. A saying that Mana Walker would always tell Allen Walker before he died. I chose this quote because at the time, the quote was very meaningful to me. I felt like it was words that I need to live by and words that I still need to live by. Plus, it was the first anime that my brother and I actually watched together. Especially he is the one who got me started on anime. And it’s an awesome anime!

This is the healing rune from The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments. I chose the healing rune because it’s one of my favorite runes, from my favorite series.

This tattoo is “Always”  Snape’s love for Lilly Evans Potter from Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.
Along with chapter stars. Lori got this tattoo, because “that’s how I feel about the series. HP will “always” be my favorite book series.”

Harry Potter Always :) (or forever but this is my interpretation of an Always tattoo)
Because I’ve always wanted a Harry Potter tattoo. The books helped me through difficult times.

The Deathly Hallows are a major plot point and source of power from the magical world of Harry Potter.
4. I got the tattoo because the books and movies got me through some very dark times in my childhood (self acceptance issues) and I wanted a constant reminder to look at, to keep me going should I feel down.

These are the chapter stars from the American edition of the Harry Potter books.  The tattoo is located on each wrist. I battle with depression. When I am low, I turn to Harry and the gang. More recently, I am unable to read as often as I need. I see the stars, on my wrist, approximately where my book would rest and it comforts me. Sometimes, it is the only reminder I need.

I hope that you all enjoyed checking out these nerd tattoos! I think its really awesome that all these people are able to express their love for a particular book or TV show, or just something nerdy, by creating art on their skin. Beautiful.
If you would like to be featured in a future edition of Nerd Ink, please email me a picture of your tattoo, what it is (because I may not know haha!) and why you got it!
Happy Nerd Everyone!
