Tuesday Top Ten-Favorite Sidekicks

One thing that I have always noticed about reading books is that the main character always seems to be a super awesome best friend…like a best friend that goes along with their crazy schemes and risks their life for them, medical is a shoulder to cry on but makes them laugh when situations seem absolutely unlaughable. Best friends are amazing.

In Sarah Dessen’s book “Someone Like You”, sales there’s a quote that says, page “Life is an awful, ugly place to not have a best friend.”

And I definitely agree with that statement. I have had the bad luck of having…well, not the best friends in the entire world. Its taken some time to really realize who are my friends and who are not. I have the best boyfriend in the world, who is also my best friend. I have my best friend, Allison. I have met my awesome friends from the LADA. I have my SUPER cool fangirl friends, from iFandoms Collide. I am lucky.

But yeah, the point was, a lot of main characters have some seriously kickass best friends or sidekicks. So that became the inspiration for this week’s Tuesday Top Ten.

Enjoy!

Top Ten Favorite Sidekicks

10. Huck Finn from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

url

This one is a little bittersweet for me. I had a best friend from the time I was 7 years old until I was about 22 years old. That’s a really long time. We were absolutely inseparable, and sadly, our friendship fell apart and pretty quickly. But when we were friends, I called her Huck Finn and she called me Tom Sawyer :D And it worked. Because Tom Sawyer…he’s a crazy kid. I mean, kids are crazy but Tom takes the cake. He has an imagination two miles high and a mischievous streak just as long. He’s always coming up with harebrained schemes and adventures and he always makes sure that they are absolutely completely out-of-this-world ridiculous. And Huck Finn, he just goes along with it, like all right, Tom whatever you say. Now, if you want to get technical, I was more Huck and my friend was more Tom, but that’s a different story. I just loved Huck Finn so much because he was really the brains of the operation, even if he didn’t really realize it until he got his own book. But I love that whatever Tom said, Huck did. I know that sounds crazy, but that’s a mark of a great friend. A great friend is willing to go on any and all adventures with you, no matter how insane they are.

9. Grover Underwood from the Percy Jackson series

url

I adore Grover. I really do. He is the best friend that Percy can honestly ask for, and vice versa. They work together so well, and I love that they protect each other, and work together to save the world. I love that they both have their insecurities but they both have their strengths as well, and it helps them both. The thing about Grover is, he isn’t the most powerful or most confident or the strongest or any of that, but he’s definitely the most loyal. Even though he’s often times nervous or scared or unsure of the messes they get themselves into, he doesn’t stop, not once. He brings Percy into the world of demigods, he’s the person who is his first step in the door and so of course, he’s the first friend he has, the best friend that he has. And he helps him learn the world, and be comfortable, and he’s always by his side, whether he’s battling Medusa or taking on Cyclops or taking on a god. Grover is the most loyal sidekick, and it means so much because Grover isn’t the bravest. And even though he may not always want to do the crazy, insane, dangerous missions but he goes anyway, because he’s determined and he’s loyal.

8. Samwise Gamgee for Lord of the Rings

url-1

Honestly, I feel like Samwise doesn’t even need an explanation. I mean, if you have watched Lord of the Rings, read the books, you should know. You should know exactly what it is about Samwise Gamgee that just makes him one of the best sidekicks and best friends. The guy leaves his comfy home behind, the only world he’s ever known to go on a pretty much hopefully quest to destroy a ring that’s going to tear his friend apart to a place thats nearly impossible to get to. I mean, think about it, would any of your best friends do that? I’m not sure how many would! The fact that Sam follows Frodo into hell basically, worse than hell, is amazing. And not only does he follow him, but he’s his partner in all of it. He makes sure that they rest and eat and that Frodo doesn’t go completely insane. He protects him. I think that Frodo is not the only hero in destroying the ring, but Sam is as well. Sam is by his side, keeping him alive and safe, as safe as they could be, and he helps him up the mountain and makes it so they can save Middle Earth. Sam is amazing.

7. Dr. John Watson from Sherlock

url-1

Okay, lets really think about this: there’s something wrong with Sherlock. Sherlock Holmes is not a normal person; he’s incredibly smarter than most people and it takes away a lot of his humanity. He is so concerned in what he is saying, what he’s discovering, and trying to solve that he forgets to have tact or he tends not to realize that what he says can be hurtful or inappropriate. I think once he brings John into his life, that he becomes better. Not different, he can never change completely but I do believe that he becomes a better person. John also is like Huck Finn; he is down for the adventure. He lives for it. He goes along with Sherlock because he’s his best friend and he took him out of his boring existence. And he makes Sherlock more of a person. Sherlock laughs and finally has human companionship which makes him an even smarter detective than he was before. I like John because he goes along with Sherlock and his crazy adventures, he remains loyal even when Sherlock doesn’t deserve it, and he loves him, and is willing to do anything for him.

6. Felicity Worthington from the Gemma Doyle Trilogy

url-2

I love Felicity! She is the most amazing female character in some of the books that I’ve read ever. She is so strong, especially for the book series that is part of: The Gemma Doyle Series. It takes place in Victorian London before women are worth anything. They can’t vote, and their goals in life are to make a perfect debut and secure a good husband. But Felicity wants more than that. She wants adventure and she wants power. She is such a flawed character but aren’t we all? She’s more than the prim and proper lady that she is supposed to be. She is the most gutsy of all of them in the realms. She asks for sheer might, she learns how to wield a bow and arrow, she becomes a warrior. She is also a lesbian character (sorry, spoiler) in a very conservative world. Women and men who prefer the company of the same sex were abominations in that time; it was absolutely unacceptable in every way, and I love that Libba Bray puts that character in. But I love who she is to Gemma. She is a near world for Gemma. Gemma has been closed off, unwilling to let anyone in, afraid of herself, afraid of everything. But Felicity takes them all under her wing: Pippa, Gemma and Ann, and she brings out the best in all of them, she gives them all the strength to be who they are.

5. Simon Lewis from the Mortal Instruments

url-2

Okay, Simon Lewis from The Mortal Instruments is Clary’s best friend. Clary and Simon have been best friends forever and when Clary is yanked into this crazy world of demons and Downworlders and demon-hunting people called Shadowhunters, Simon follows right behind. And he puts up with a lot. He’s loved Clary his whole life and she’s suddenly head over heels for some Shadowhunter named Jace . When they find out Jace is her brother, nope, she still loves him. He gets turned into a rat, and taken to a crazy vampire lair. He eventually gets turned into a vampire. She puts the Mark of Cain on him which curses him. He literally gets pulled into this world and everything that could possibly go wrong, does go wrong. But no matter what happens, no matter how much trouble that Clary gets herself into, Simon is always always always there for her. He loves her, no matter what happens, and he is sticking with her. That’s a loyal friend. I don’t know how many friends would stick around after you chose your brother over him, and were indirectly the reason that he is now a vampire. But Simon does and that’s pretty crazy. Plus Robbie Sheehan is adorable and delicious.

4. Hermione Granger from Harry Potter series

url-3

Okay, who wouldn’t want Hermione for a best friend? And I’m not talking about the fact that Emma Watson grew up to be absolutely beautiful, too beautiful to be Hermione Granger haha. I’m talking about the fact that Hermione Granger is one of those one of a kind best friends that never really actually exist. She is the perfect person to have by your side. She is smart as hell, and saves Harry’s butt so many times, I couldn’t even begin to count. She’s loyal; she sticks by her friends throughout anything, including trying to take down the most dangerous and powerful Dark wizard that has ever existed. She’s super nice; there really isn’t anyone that she doesn’t get along with, except maybe the Slytherins who make her life absolutely miserable. She’s so aware of everyone, and she is so empathetic to everyone around her. She’s also a good listener and a good advice giver. A lot of times people focus on her brains and her book smarts but she does have a lot of people smarts too, a lot of loyalty and a lot of heart, which is why I think she’s in Gryffindor instead of Ravenclaw. I think she has the bravery and loyalty of Gryffindor, the loyalty and kindness of a Hufflepuff, the brains and wit of a Ravenclaw and the ambitious and cunning of a Slytherin and I’d like her to be my friend.

3. The Companions from Doctor Who

Picture 3

I want every single one of these people to be my best friend. Every. Single. One. The Doctor gets himself into the craziest adventures. Its not just his life at stake. Its not just the world at stake. Sometimes its the universe at stake, the very bit of existence of everything thing is at stake. He goes on the most ridiculous of adventures and dangerous missions and all of these people follow him into it. They all come together to help him and to be there for him when he needs it. He always says he doesn’t need people or that he’s alone but he never is, not with all these companions that just love him so much. And all the companions are immensely loyal to the Doctor, no matter what flaws they find out about him. To have a best friend who loves you, even though you’re kind of crazy and even though you go on dangerous missions and even though you are so incredibly flawed. The kind of people that the Doctor brings into his life creates a family, and we kind of see that at the end of the 4th season, with Ten and Donna Noble. I would love to have a family of friends like Rose, Martha, Donna, Sally, Amy, Rory, River, Captain Jack, and Clara in my life.

2. Chewbacca from Star Wars

chewie-Chewbacca1

For those of you who don’t know the back story, which most people don’t, Chewbacca was sentenced to die, at the hands of a then Imperial soldier, Han Solo. Han refused to do this, and was dismissed as a soldier and became the smuggler that we come to know in Star Wars. Chewie owes Han a life debt, meaning that he will protect him because he saved his life, and he does that. He does exactly that. Chewbacca is Han’s partner in crime, and is always by his side. I’m also pretty sure that Han is the only person who can understand what the hell Chewbacca is saying. But what a great co-captain to have. They are really the only people they know until they meet Luke and Leia and they take care of each other, and look out for each other. I think what starts out as a simple life debt that Chewbacca has for Han turns into a genuine friendship and kinship. Chewbacca starts off protecting Han because he saved his life but you can see in the original Star Wars trilogy that he truly cares for Han Solo, and that he is heartbroken when he is frozen in carbonite. That’s a loyal friend.

1. Ron Weasley from Harry Potter series

Picture 4

I know that some people totally understand why I would choose Ron before Hermione Granger and that honestly comes from the fact that I prefer Ron over Hermione, I always have. Hermione is a wonderful character and I love her to death but she’s so…so perfect. In my eyes, she was always so perfect and I’m so far from perfect. I love Ron because he’s so brave and funny and loyal but he’s so flawed as well. People give Ron so much crap for leaving Harry and Hermione but what would you have done? They were 17 years old and trying to save the world. I didn’t even have my drivers license when I was 17 years old or a job. Its a lot for a person to handle. I think what makes Ron a strong best friend is the regret that he felt in leaving them and the hard work that he put in to find them again. He is flawed but loyal. He gets jealous and hurt and sometimes doesn’t always do the right thing but he is the most realistic best friend out of all of these. He’s the kind of best friend that you can actually have. Ron makes Harry laugh, he ushers him into the wizarding world and gives him a family to love and who loves him. He is there for him, even if sometimes his HUMAN emotions gets in the way at first. He’s brave and caring and loving and a great best friend.

Who are some of YOUR favorite sidekicks?

Tuesday Top Ten-Fictional Male Crushes

So this was one of my first blog posts way back in May of 2012, viagra 100mg when I first started my blog.

The reason that I’m doing it again is this: when I first started my blog, unhealthy I had about 15 followers, for sale that were mostly my friends and family, and most of my friends and family were just like, “Okay, Sara, we’ll follow your blog but we don’t really get it…” Now, I have a lot more followers, and I’ve met more girl bloggers and I’ve really expanded myself out there. More people are coming to WhatANerdGirlSays than before.

I’ve also had a HUGE increase in followers in the last few weeks because of the contest I just held and because I’ve been passing out my blog business cards. Which means a lot of people haven’t seen the other lists that I’ve made. And I know that my blog mostly attracts girls, nerd girls, fan girls, you know? This is a girl blog, though I do write for both genders, and one of my favorite parts of reading books and watching my shows and movies, is having that character crushes, both male and female.

This time, I’m going to be doing an updated, though not super changed, top ten of my favorite male crushes in fictional worlds. I’ll probably do an updated top ten of my favorite female crushes soon too. But I’ve decided to kind of update some of the older ones for you new followers to enjoy :)

I’m laughing a little while I write this because one of my biggest followers is my dad, and he loves reading the Tuesday Top Ten because its my more gender equal posts, and he’s always bugging me about that post, like he did today. I think he’ll be a bit disappointed in this.

But for the rest of you awesome people, enjoy!

Top Ten Fictional Male Crushes

10. Han Alister

I couldn’t find a photo for Han Alister, mostly because he’s a book character, and a book character that has not been made into a movie, so its near impossible. I also couldn’t find any fan art like I really liked. So Han doesn’t get a picture. Oh well. Han Alister is one of the main characters, besides Princess Raisa, in the Seven Realms trilogy by Cinda Williams Chima. Princess Raisa is the heir to her country, and determined to become a good queen, to be good to her people and help them, and to find a person who she can marry that will benefit the kingdom. Han is a former streetlord, suddenly discovering his magic powers and learning to harness them and fighting hard to make something of himself. Their stories intertwine as unrest both outside and inside the borders of the country threatens them both. What I like about Han is the sort of…confidence he has and the way he holds himself. He still has that confidence and easiness of a streetlord, that casual arrogance but he also has determination and ambition to BE someone, especially when he realizes how he feels for Raisa, and knows that his station doesn’t permit him to have her. I like ambition in a man :)

“So here’s the truth – I love you. I love everything about you – the way you stick up for people even when it costs you. The way you keep trying to do the right thing even when you’re not exactly sure what the right thing is. I love how you put words together. You’re as skilled with words as any knife fighter with a blade. You can put an enemy down on his back, or you can raise people up so they find what’s best in themselves. You’ve changed my life. You’ve given me the words I need to become whatever I want.”

9. Tony Stark/Ironman

tony_stark_iron_man_2-wallpaper-1600x900

So awhile back, I was watching TV and one of those entertainment shows, E.T. or whatever, did a piece on Robert Downey Jr, and all the drama he once went through and how everyone thought he was done and would never recover and whatnot. They showed a People magazine that was something like, Robert Downey Jr will never bounce back, or recover, or be important again, or something. Then they showed a People magazine that came out probably after Ironman, and they were like “Oops! We were Wrong!” And its so TRUE. Robert Downey Jr came back with a vengeance and the Ironman movies are my favorite to come out of this comic book character storm. One, they’re just great movies, and two, Tony Stark is an awesome character. He’s cocky and arrogant but wicked smart and honestly, I do believe he wants to save the day. I like him because he doesn’t have super powers, much like Bruce Wayne/Batman but instead of having just the heaps of money, he really does have the brains as well. He is seriously intelligent. And hot. So hot.

“All right. Yay. All right. Good job, guys. Let’s just not come in tomorrow. Let’s just take a day. Have you ever tried shawarma? There’s a shawarma joint about two blocks from here. I don’t know what it is, but I wanna try it.”

8. Sherlock Holmes

Benedict-Cumberbatch

I’m starting to see a trend in my crushes, and I’m only on #7. For those of you who don’t know, or are basically living under a rock, this is Benedict Cumberbatch (also appearing as the necromancer and Smaug in The Hobbit) as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC show, Sherlock. This is the show that inspired the American adapation, Elementary (because god forbid we come up with new ideas here haha). Anyway, it seriously must be his dashing good looks and charming British accent because Sherlock Holmes the character is kind of a jerk, and definitely arrogant. Not even a little bit, he most definitely is arrogant, and in the beginning, is almost lacking of humanity. He gets excited when there’s a serial killer because its interesting and gives him something to do with that big ‘ol brain of his. But I like that, as the show goes on, he gains more of his humanity, which I think comes a lot from his partner in crime, John Watson. He makes jokes and laughs, and cares. I mean, sure, he’s still Sherlock and he’s still a JERK but he gets better and I adore him.

Sitting on a couch in Buckingham Palace
John Watson: Are you wearing any pants?
Sherlock Holmes: …No.
John Watson: Okay.

7. Will Herondale

tumblr_static_-the-infernal-devices-clockwork-angel-cover-the-infernal-devices-10976341-804-692

Yeah, there’s a trend. There is so definitely a trend. William Herondale is one of the main characters in Cassandra Clare’s second Shadowhunter series, which takes place in the Victorian age and features people who may or may not be related to those in the Mortal Instruments, her original series. Will starts off as an asshole. Excuse the language, but he really is. He isn’t just mean, he’s cruel at times. He casually uses the drug that is KILLING his best friend, he treats Tessa like nothing more than a prostitute. He has harsh jokes and sometimes you are just like…how could this be happening? And he’s the first male character that you, and Tessa, meet and he’s abnormally handsome, with the dark hair and blue eyes and you’re hoping that this is the one for her and he’s just so mean. It gets better though in Clockwork Prince when you realize that he is under a curse, that everyone he loves will die and so he is cruel to them, to save them. Once he realizes that he was lied to, and has never been cursed, the real Will comes out and you realize what a loving, and caring and selfless person he is, especially in Clockwork Princess. And you feel sympathy for him…how hard would it be to convince people NOT to love you?

“Jem told me what Ragnor Fell said about my father,” Will said. “That for my father, there was only ever one woman he loved, and it was her for him, or nothing. You are that for me. I love you, and I will only ever love you until I die…”

6. Rhett Butler

rhett2

Rhett. Butler. Totally doesn’t fit this list in the slightest but is one of my absolute favorite male characters of all time. I can’t even remember how young I was the first time I watched this movie, and I read the book for the first time when I was 13, and have read it several times since then. Its one of my absolute favorite books of ALL time. I like Rhett Butler because, straight up, the guy has more guts than anyone in the entire book. Ashley Wilkes is all about honor and serving his country even if he doesn’t actually believe in what he’s fighting for. Charles Hamilton is just a big softie and was just not the match for Scarlett in the slightest. Frank Kennedy was smart but bland. There wasn’t much to him. The most amazing man in the book was Rhett. He had the intelligent and charisma and cleverness and slyness and all of it. He made his money, on his own after his family disowns him, and even if its not the “proper” way, he still does it. He does things for himself and I like that. He has ambition and guts. He doesn’t have his hand up in the clouds, he’s going to do what he has to do!

“Well, my dear, take heart. Some day, I will kiss you and you will like it. But not now, so I beg you not to be too impatient.”

5. Sirius Black

Sirius-Black-sirius-black-22405728-1156-1700

Even though I think Gary Oldman is sexy man, he’s not what I pictured as Sirius Black. I always pictured Sirius as a youngish, slightly arrogant and just funny as hell. (Damn, there goes my trend again…). Sirius is arrogant and he is immature. He never quite grows up from his popular days at Hogwarts and he never really gets over his childhood hate of Snape. But I still think that he is a really good person. So many people complain about his inconsistencies but people in general are inconsistent. And I think he was trying his very best to be a good godfather to Harry. He spent 12 years in Azkaban and he went in at a young age, only 21 or 22 years old and he came out as a middle aged adult but he never really got the time to truly grow up. He was beginning to grow up, in his time outside of prison. And he truly loved Lily, James and Lupin, and Harry. He was trying to do his best by them and it was admirable. And he was supposed to be good looking as hell and he had that cockiness and easy goingness, and he was a loyal, loyal friend.

“Then you should have died! Died rather than betray your friends, as we would have done for you!”

4. Michael Moscovitz

MM

Michael Moscovitz, I think, was one of my first fictional crushes. Definitely one of my first book crushes. I discovered The Princess Diaries and Meg Cabot when I was 12 years old. I loved Michael. He was the super good looking senior who fell in love with super awkward and geeky freshman, Mia, and it was like a dream to me. I was super awkward and gangly and shy in middle school and high school. Hell, I still am, minus the shy part. But I’ve always been geeky, with my head in my journal or a book and wrapped up in my fictional worlds and I always wished some good looking older guy would come out of nowhere and love me despite my awkwardness haha. But Michael is great. He’s hot, he’s smart as hell. He gets into Colombia, early admission, and invents a robot arm that assists in heart surgeries. He’s musical and in a band. He’s really really really good at math and helps Mia pass math, because she can write a good story but she couldn’t solve the quadratic formula if her life depended on it. He’s geeky and quotes Star Wars and Star Trek and loves Buffy and he’s awesome. He’s just awesome. And now that I’m 25 and its been over a decade since I first read these books…I get a kick out of the similarities between me and Mia and the similarities between Michael and my boyfriend Jon.

“Mia, I’m not sorry. And I’ll wait.
Love, Michael.”

3. The Doctor

images

I don’t see how a girl who loves Doctor Who could NOT have a crush on The Doctor. He can give you the entire universe. He offers you the most appealing deal in the history of all deals. He has a spaceship that can go anywhere in time and space. You can go to any time, any planet, any where. Wherever you want to go. And sure, every time you go somewhere, things inevitably go wrong, but his life is interesting and fast paced and different. Its so different from this “boring, monotonous” life. He’s hundresds of years old and he’s been everywhere and seen everything. He’s smart and funny and selfish and selfless at the same time. He’s always determined to save the day, but he always has fun while he’s at. And he cares SO much. The depth of his emotions and his caring is what makes him so real. He’s an alien, not even human and he’s older than any human can even begin to understand but its his emotions, and passion that give him his humanity. If The Doctor showed up on my doorstep, you bet I’d want to see the galaxy.

“Amy Pond, there’s something you better understand about me ’cause it’s important and one day your life may depend on it…I am definitely a mad man with a box.”

2. Han Solo

hansolo

My first fictional crush, easily. I was about seven years old when my little brother Joey broke his leg at 2 years old, so severely that he was in a full body cast. The kid was a toddler and couldn’t even move. It was just the saddest thing and as the eldest child, I’ve always kind of felt…a responsibility to take care of my five younger siblings. And the only thing my little brother ever wanted to do was watch Star Wars, the original trilogy…over and over and over again. As soon as one of the movies would be over, I’d press the rewind button on the VCR (wow, I feel old) and we’d watch it again. It became something we did together, and we’re both big Star Wars nerds now. And while so many other girls I’ve known have fallen for Luke (though, Mark Hamill did NOT age well), I was a Han Solo girl, through and through. He was the funnier one, the more handsome one and he was more confident than Luke was. Even though he was still trying to figure out things himself, he was confident and he found his way through it. And he was just plain funny. He always had some of the funnier lines in the movies…and he had the cocky attitude as well, its so irresistible.

Princess Leia: I love you
Han Solo: I know

1. Jace Wayland Morgenstern Herondale Lightwood

images-1

Its funny, a week ago, I would have put the picture of Jace on the cover of City of Lost Souls as the picture. I was happy with Jamie Campbell Bower, but not 100% convinced. After meeting him at WonderCon this past weekend, and seeing him in person, I’m convinced. Sure, he’ll never be my perfect Jace that I pictured in my head but he’s great and he’s going to be a perfect Jace. I found the Mortal Instruments in the summer of 2010 when my boyfriend and I broke up for a period of time and I was miserable and needed some serious distraction. I picked up these books, literally devoured them in a matter of a few days and fell in love with Jace Wayland (and many other names depending on the book). He was that guy that you didn’t want to like but couldn’t help but liking. He was cocky and super arrogant and had that sarcastic humor that you don’t want to find funny but its totally funny. And he’s so hot, so so hot. And exactly what I needed at the time, which is why he’s probably stuck with me. Its like Maia says in City of Ashes, “Some guys look at you like they want sex. Jace looks at you like you’ve already had sex, it was great, and now you’re just friends-even though you want more. Drives girls crazy.” So. True. And he says some of the sweetest things, once he lets his guard down, and lets people in. Once he loosens up a bit on the bad boy-ness and the cockiness, he is such a loyal friend to the Lightwoods, and so protective of Clary, and just brave as hell. Sigh.

There is no pretending,” Jace said with absolute clarity. “I love you, and I will love you until I die, and if there is life after that, I’ll love you then.” -City of Glass

*      *       *      *      *

All right, well apparently I have a type: hot, sarcastic, cocky, arrogant, ambitious, bad boys or something haha. I like the boys who have that sexy arrogance and don’t give a crap attitude, but when you look, are totally sweethearts. Man, am I obvious haha.

What are some of YOUR favorite fictional crushes? As always, share in the comments!

Tuesday Top Ten-Favorite Fictional Bromances

I was reading one of my favorite blogs to follow, sickness over at The Urge to Write (which, incidentally, you should all check out. She’s a great writer and her blogs always keep me interested) and she recently did a list of top ten fictional bromances and I loved her list, which you can see here.
But anway, I really liked her list so I decided to make it one of my Tuesday Top Tens. I’m starting to write and plan my top tens before its even Tuesday because I can get SO busy. Like, I haven’t done a Book of the Week in a couple weeks and I meant to write a post about my experiences at Gallifrey One (which I finally did yesterday!) and I just went to a Conan taping on Wednesday for my birthday and I just haven’t done it. I’ve just been busy and when I’ve had a free moment, I just want to do NOTHING. Or read. I am SO far behind on my 200 books this year goal…I think six books behind. I gotta catch up.
And now that I’ve gotten sufficiently off topic…here is this week’s Tuesday Top Ten, my favorite bromances.

10. Damon and Stefan Salvatore

Damon-and-Stefan-damon-and-stefan-salvatore-8271473-1450-966
Okay besides the fact that these two are insanely hot and look absolutely nothing alike…well okay a big factor is the fact that they’re hot. But what I like about this pair of vampire brothers is that they are actually legitimately brothers. They were close before they were turned and even though their relationship grew tumultuous afterwards, you can tell they would still do anything for each other and they both do. When Elena chooses Stefan, Damon concedes even though you know it has to hurt. Stefan makes a terrible deal with Klaus, an evil Original vampire, in order to save Damon’s life. They’re obviously important to one another and they accomplish so much more when they work together. And they fight like normal brothers do, which gives them some humanity. And they are so pretty to look at.

9. Grover and Percy

Percy-and-Grover-pjo-the-lightning-thief-movie-17283407-1262-542
Percy’s fatal flaw, according to the series, is his deep and unwavering loyalty to his friends. We see that in his love for Annabeth and we see it in his love for his Cyclops brother, Tyson. But we also see it in his friendship with Grover. He firsts friends Grover at their school because he is handicapped, shy and nervous. He sticks by his side no matter what, and when he finds out that he is a demigod and that Grover is a satyr and his protector, he continues to stick by his side. These two are basically inseparable and are even connected at one point. I was sad to not really see Grover in the Heroes of Olympus, even though he doesn’t really need to be. Percy just seems kind of empty without his best friend. Grover and Percy are an awesome bromance because they stick together no matter what and have crazy, dangerous adventures together.

8. Will and Jem

will_and_jem_by_daubiss-d3hazd4
Will and Jem have an epic bromance because I swear at times, I think they’re going to just ditch Tessa and start making out with each other. Actually, sometimes, I kind of wish that would happen. Ha! What kind of ship name is that? Willem? Jemill? Anyway, I like the bromance of Will and Jem from the Infernal Devices because of their epic loyalty to each other. Will loves Jem, would do anything for him. He never stops believing there could be a cure for Jem’s illness and he is the one who gets the drug for him. Even though Will thinks he is cursed so that everyone he loves will die, he lets himself love Jem, as his greatest sin, because he can’t help loving him. They are parabatai, warriors closer than brothers and you can see that. Jem loves Will, no matter the horrible things he does and says to push people away. That’s brotherhood and love right there. Will also is the same way back, even though he can’t show it for most of the first and second books. Even though he is madly in love with Tessa, he toasts in happiness her engagement to Jem.

7. Buzz and Woody

2427135-2010_toy_story_3_001_big
Is there a better pair of best friends than Buzz and Woody? I honestly don’t think so. Sure, they’re toys. Not only are they fictional characters, but they aren’t even people or beings of a sort, they are TOYS. And yet they have one of the most real and beautiful friendships that we see in fictional worlds. The friendship starts off rocky, with neither one willing to become friends with the other, both of them thinking they are better than the other. But through out the trials and tribulations of making their way back to Andy’s house before they move, they realize they are more similar than they know and become the best of friends. Throughout the two following sequels, they fight, bicker, both trust and distrust each other and say goodbye to each other. They make fun of one another and help one another and they have a great, great friendship. Its what I would imagine a friendship between two guys to be and you kind want to be their friend too.

6. Legolas and Gimli

lotrelfs
Haha I picked this picture because its SO funny. I love the dynamic of Legolas and Gimli only because I kind of feel like its similar to that of C3PO and R2D2 (who, incidentally, do not make the list…if only because sometimes my patience wears thin on C3PO haha). Middle Earth is literally going to HELL and there are some serious things going down here: death, starvation, annhilation, sacrifice…this are some epic, epic stories. But you have the friendship of Legolas and Gimli, which is both completely endearing and touching, but also hilarious as hell. They are the comedic relief in the epic battles. While everything is going to shit, they are laughing and counting how many enemies they are taking down, in a contest. I can imagine that Gimli and Legolas stayed friends for years after the war. I can imagine both of them helping to create a less hostile relationship between the elves and the dwarves. They’re both so funny, and they remind us of the heart of the story. I do believe that the hobbits show a lot of the heart but I also think that of Legolas and Gimli. While they are obviously taking things so seriously and fighting hard, they remind us what it is that they are fighting for.

5. Sirius and Lupin

lupin_and_sirius_by_potterpreacher-d4g6zbr
For some reason, I actually kind of like this as a ship. Like…I totally ship Remus and Sirius. Wolfstar. That’s so weird haha. I mean, let’s make this clear, I love how everything turned out in the novels, and who ended up with who. I know all you Neville and Luna shippers were disappointed but I was okay with it. That being said, I totally ship Remus and Sirius outside of canon. But moving on, I think that these two make a great twosome, a great pair of friends. These two have lost so much, have been through so much. They’ve lost two of their best friends to death, James and Lily, and they lost a best friend to cowardice, Peter. Sirius has spend his entire life in prison for a crime that he never committed…right after hearing of the deaths of his friends. Remus has spent his entire life being judged for being a werewolf. And yet these are two of the strongest men in the book, some of the best teachers for Harry, and even though they’ve lost so much, they have each other, and it shows when they reunite. They are whats left of the Marauders and when they die too, they complete the circle.

4. Jace and Alec

Picture 5
I like the friendship between Jace and Alec for several reasons. One reason is that they are parabatai, just like Jem and Will, which makes them closer than brothers. But I also think they have such a great brother dynamic. Alec is the first child that Jace as ever seen in his life, when he comes to live with the Lightwoods, and they become best friends. Jace would do anything for Alec and vice versa but I also think they need each other. Alec is shy, sometimes lacking of courage. He is afraid of his own sexuality and he’s even afraid of killing demons, because he is so busy protecting Jace and Isabelle. But Alec is loving and caring and passionate. He is so true and pure, even if he doesn’t even believe in himself all the time. Jace, on the other hand, is so avoidant of emotions, of love, that he is overly confident and overly outgoing. He pushes people away, even those who just wish to be his family. Without each other, maybe Alec would have never had the courage to come out, accept his love for Magnus and tell the world. Maybe Jace wouldn’t have let his guard down and become brave instead of just reckless. I have them this high up because they are best friends, brothers, parabatai and they need each other.

3. Sherlock and Watson

sherlock-101-07924
Okay, I’m just going to say one thing first: when searching for a picture of John and Sherlock for this post, I had a hard time finding something that’s appropriate and that’s because people ship Johnlock like no other. I must admit, I kind of do too. For anyone who has never watched the show Sherlock, you need to. The first two seasons (which are 3 episodes each) are available on Netflix and the third season probably won’t be out for awhile. But its fantastic; and much, much better than the US version, Elementary. Trust me on this. Its so good and Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have excellent on screen chemistry. They need each other. John Watson is content to wallow in self pity, living a half life. Sherlock doesn’t have a whole lot of humanity in him, because he’s so busy showing off his intelligence all the time, using it to figure out impossible puzzles. Together, they make a great time. John gives Sherlock some humanity, though Sherlock still is kind a jerk. Sherlock gives John an exciting life, as part of their crime solving duo. They’re equals in a way; even though Sherlock can spout off some crazy information about a person or a situation, John can often times see a humanity behind, a reason behind it. I am dying for the third season to come so I can have some Johnlock again.

2. Han and Chewbacca

han-solo-chewbacca
What would Han Solo be without his Chewbacca, huh? Nothing, I tell you. Han Solo is a badass smuggler but he wouldn’t be half as intimidating if he didn’t have a 7 foot 3 wookiee by his side. If you know anything about their relationship, basially Han saved Chewbacca’s life and so Chewbacca owes him what you would call a life debt, and will serve him for his life. But I think its much more than that. I think that Chewbacca and Han Solo have a serious friendship. They copilot the Millenium Falcon together and go on crazy, dangerous smuggling runs together. Chewbacca is beyond upset when Han is frozen in carbonite and does some serious work (along with others, of course) to get him back from Jabba the Hutt. I think they make a good pair because they are an unlikely pair but it just works for them…especially since I’m pretty sure Han Solo is the only person who actually understands what the hell a wookiee is saying. “You said it, Chewie”. I’ve always wondered what exactly Chewbacca says when Han responds. I guess we’ll never know and that’s the beauty of the friendship.

1. Harry and Ron

article-0-02E3EAE700000578-58_468x453
Is there a better friendship between two guys than Harry and Ron? Don’t answer that; you all have strong opinions and I don’t want to hear it haha. I love the Potter universe above any and all other fandoms and that makes the bromance between Harry and Ron my absolute favorite. They need each other, just as much of the pairs before. Harry is THE Harry Potter and his entire life is laid out before him, and he has to be so serious at times. All the pressure is on him. Its opposite for Ron, he’s one of seven children, the youngest of the boys, and he’s more apt to make jokes than anything else. Ron is there to usher Harry into the wizarding world and to help loosen up, and be happy, even when it feels like it can’t be happy. Harry is there to help Ron believe in himself, to help him because the badass wizard that he can be. Even when they are pissing each other off, they always end up friends again: The Triwizard Tournament debacle, the Half Blood Prince drama, the separation in Deathly Hallows.

What do you think? Do I realllly want to ask? You guys are so opinionated! Haha! But I really do want to know so tell me your favorite bromances below!

Top Ten Valentine’s Day Crushes

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!

I have some things to say today, pharm on this day of love. One, order tell everyone you love that you love them. You should be doing this every day, not just on Valentine’s Day but you should do it today anyway. And two, if you’re single, honestly, hush up. Valentine’s Day isn’t just about relationship or romantic love. Its about friendship love and family love too. I always make sure to tell my friends that I love them to today and my family as well. My mom always makes me a little thing of cookies and candy and I always get a box of Sweethearts (the good ones, not the gross chalky ones) from my Dad, guaranteed.

I just hate when single people cry on this day. And maybe some people will get all uppity because I’m not single so I don’t know what I’m talking about. You’re talking to a girl who was dumped three times on Valentine’s Day; trust me, I can understand the Valentine’s Day hate. But you have to move on from that, and realize that there IS someone out there and you WILL find them, when the time is right. And, remember, just because maybe you’re not in a relationship, doesn’t mean you aren’t loved. Because you are; there’s always someone out there that loves you.

And besides, if you’re a nerd girl like me, you are bound to have some fictional crushes and whats better than a curling up with a book and falling in love with your favorite fictional character ALLLLLL over again :D

So I’m doing another top ten this week, forgoing the Book of the Week, in honor of Valentine’s Day.

Ever since I became a Mortal Instruments fan, I have to stop thinking of the evil guy, Valentine Morgenstern, every time I hear the word “Valentine”. Its so bad haha.

Moving on, my top ten Valentine’s Day crushes are:

Mr Darcy from Pride and Prejudice

images

This was one of the very few books I actually enjoyed in high school and probably because its a timeless story. Some people don’t get the love of this story and to them I say, DID YOU NOT READ THE SAME BOOK AS ME? I mean, sure, the story takes place in an era that barely exists anymore. I don’t need to make a debut and I don’t need to have my “season”. There aren’t appropriate matches for me and I don’t have to worry about not being rich enough for a man to marry me. But the messages that come across in this novel are still true: that we need to stop judging people right off the bat, that we need to let go of our pride and let go of our prejudices and see whats in front of us. Mr Darcy is one of  my biggest fictional crushes because of how you watch him fall in love with headstrong Elizabeth Bennett and how you watch him struggle with it…and when he finally comes to terms with it, and the lengths that he goes to make her happy, its just beautiful. Sigh. One of the most romantic books of all time.

9. Caroline Forbes from The Vampire Diaries

images-1

Candice Accola is absolutely gorgeous. Its funny; when it comes to guys, I tend to go light hair, light eyes…I like me some white boys I guess haha. But with girls, I like dark hair, dark eyes so I was surprised to find myself with a HUGE crush on Miss Caroline Forbes from Vampire Diaries. She’s soooo gorgeous and she plays a vampire, and instead of sparkling or being so beautifully tormented, she’s NORMAL and SEXY. Its awesome. When she’s turned, she still stays so wonderfully normal and she genuinely cares about all her friends and when she loves, she loves fully. She’s brave and smart and committed to her family and friends and sometimes you even forget that she’s a vampire. She took what was handed to her, even though she didn’t want it, and she lives with it. She’s so much better than the brooding and tortured vampires of most vampire novels and shows and so she’s a breath of fresh air ot me…and a super hot one at that.

8. Percy Jackson from Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Heroes of Olympus

tumblr_mctes9YUhA1r4l70eo1_500

Okay, I’m gonna make myself clear here: Percy is only hot at the end of the Olympians series and through the Heroes of Olympus series. Because he can’t be hot as an eleven year old because I would feel creepy as hell. And I know a lot of people were super disappointed in the first Percy Jackson movie. i do not think it was great but I don’t think it was THAT bad, either. And I think Logan Lerman makes a good Percy, a HOT one, even if he’s too old by the book standards. The picture above is awesome. And I want one of those shirts really badly. I think Percy becomes really brave and loyal as the books go along and if though its his fatal flaw, he’ll do anything for his friends, especially his girlfriend, Annabeth, and its so gosh darn cute, its hard to manage haha. That helps to guaranteed him a spot on this list.

7. Rhett Butler from Gone with the Wind

Rhett1

Another one of the most romantic books of all time. Not this stupid Fifty Shades of Grey crap. Gone with the Wind…probably the MOST romantic book of all time. And of course Rhett Butler is the hero of the book. Charles Hamilton and Frank Kennedy are barely a blip on the radar and Ashley Wilkes…my god, Ashley Wilkes makes me alternately want to throw up and punch him in the face. Rhett Butler is a man’s man, he doesn’t give a damn what anyone thinks of him, not until he finds people to love enough to change. He loves Scarlett and he loves his daughter, Bonnie, enough to become a gentleman to take care of them. He loves Scarlett enough to put with her craziness, which not many men will do in this day and age, let alone during the Civil War/Reconstruction period. Plus he just exudes sexiness.

6. Han Alister from the Seven Realms series

Couldn’t find a picture for Han, nor a fan art that I liked enough to put up here on my blog. I adore Han Alister because of everything that he is and everything that he works so hard to be. He was a criminal for so long, the king of the criminals and he did some seriously terrible things. Then he gives up the crime life, and tries to get some honest work to feed and take care of his mother and little sister. And when they die and he learns of his wizarding heritage, he does everything he can to learn his skill and to please everyone: the tribes who feel like they own him, the wizards who want to control him, Raisa who he loves and can’t have, and on and on and on. He works so hard to do the right thing, and he works so hard to protect the people he cares about, especially Raisa. You have to admire his courage and his guts, his talents and his intelligence.

5. Isabelle Lightwood from the Mortal Instruments series

444c3d20dd2e44fb5c5667fdf098c14f

I have a thing for the Lightwoods. One of them makes the number one spot on this list (I’m sure you totally know who it is). I also completely adore Alec Lightwood but you know, he’s gay so that doesn’t really work out in my favor haha. But Isabelle Lightwood has to make the list because she’s sexy as hell and she’s a badass. They say that even in the modern times of Shadowhunter that women HAVE to be trained to fight and if they aren’t, they’ll be relegated to jobs that keep them away from the action. Isabelle is trained to be a good Shadowhunter and she is a GREAT one, almost as good as Jace and probably better than her brother, Alec. She’s brave and she protects her family above anything. Her family loyalty to her parents, to her brothers (all three of them), is so admirable. I wish I had the bravery of Isabelle. Then there’s the fact that she fights all these demons in stilettos and sexy outfits doesn’t hurt in the slightest. I’m also really hoping that in City of Heavenly Fire, the last TMI installment, that her and Clary become parabatai. it would be SERIOUSLY awesome.

4. Sirius Black from the Harry Potter series

iPhone, Blackberry, wallpaper, 480, 320, pixels, high, vertical

I have no idea what it is about Sirius Black but he is one of my favorite characters in the entire Harry Potter universe besides Luna Lovegood and Ron Weasley. I love Luna for her uniqueness and I love Ron for his loyalty and his humor. But Sirius, I don’t know, that’s the man I have a crush on. I think its because he’s the bad boy, you know? But in a good way. Like, I’m not sitting here with a crush on Draco Malfoy (although, whew, Tom Felton is HOT). He was the hot bad boy when he was at school at Hogwarts and he’s sort of the same kind of guy when he grows up. He still has that casual arrogance, that cockiness that he used to have that is so sexy but he’s also extremely brave and intelligent and he’s a good father figure for Harry. I know that everyone agrees with that because he was cruel to Kreacher and he could be selfish at times but he was HUMAN. I think we like to put our favorite characters on pedestals but some of my favorite characters are the ones with the biggest flaws. Sirius Black…sexy man.

3. The Doctor from the Doctor Who series

tumblr_lvaq06HHdX1r1tsa1

The Doctor is hot for one big reason: he can do something for women that no other man can do. He can take them anywhere in time and space, whenever, wherever. He can take them on the most amazing of adventures, he can take them to see the most amazing places. If the Doctor showed up on my doorstop, I’d be like, “Let me grab my books and let’s go!” Because, you know, I can’t live without my books! They keep the stories fresh and the characters fresh with new companions and new regenerations of the Doctor, each one of them uniquely awesome and uniquely sexy. I am also on a Doctor Who high because I’m going to Gallifrey One, the Who convention, this weekend and I am SO excited! The Doctor is awesome, smart, sarcastic, funny, god he’s even sexy when he gets angry. And he has a blue box that can go ANYWHERE. And he has a damn British accent! You just don’t get better than that.

Except the maybe the first two on this list…below…haha

2. Han Solo from Star Wars

Original Trilogy - Han Solo 06

I have said it over and over again that this was my first nerd crush. I watched Star Wars when I was really young and I really started getting into it when I was about seven years old. My little brother had broken his leg when he was two (long crazy story haha) and he pretty much couldn’t do anything and the only thing he ever wanted to do is watch Star Wars. So we watched a ton of Star Wars, the original masterpieces that were on VHS. And this is where I met Han Solo. Mark Hamill as Luke was okay but I was already into that rugged, sarcastic man. Do i sense a pattern here? Yes, yes, I do. I like the sarcastic, humorous, bad buy who is really good kind of guy and that fits Han Solo perfectly. He has that bad boyness and the humor but he’s also sweet and he also cares and loves his friends. But he’s not mushy at the same time. And yet I still totally melt into a puddle every time he looks into Princess Leia’s eyes and says “I know”. SIgh. And now there are rumors of a stand alone Han Solo movie? Love it, as long as Harrison Ford doesn’t return. The man was SEXY as Han Solo and Indiana Jones but he’s a bit old to reprise that role…

1. Jace Wayland Morgenstern Herondale Lightwood from The Mortal Instruments series

Picture 4

Surprise, surprise. This guy is going to be my number one for a very, very long time. You may notice that I picked a picture of Jace on the cover of the novel, City of Lost Souls. I love Jamie Campbell Bower and I think that he’ll do a great job as Jace. But because Jace Lightwood is my ultimate fictional crush, I have my own vision of him in my head and that’s exactly how I like him. Jamie will do a great job but he isn’t at all what I pictured. Moving on, Jace fits the pattern of sexy, sarcastic badass bad boys that make my list. I like the sarcastic ones and I like the ones that are fighters, but are mushy enough to be super romantic. Jace Lightwood is a badass Shadowhunter, the best one, in fact, and his fighting skills are unparalleled. But he’s also fiercely loyal to his adopted family, the Lightwoods (Maryse, Robert, Isabelle, Alec and Max) and he becomes so protective of Clary, and he loves her so much. And I can’t lie, he says some of the sweetest things. I can’t wait to read more of them when City of Heavenly Fire hits stands in 2014.

So there’s my list of Valentine’s Day crushes but my biggest Valentine’s Day crush is this guy right here:

IMG_1485

We just celebrated five years of being together on Monday and this will be our sixth Valentine’s Day together. Five years ago, Jon asked me to be his girlfriend on February 11th. He was my best friend and became so much more than that. He had told me he wanted to wait until Valentine’s Day so I could finally have a good V-Day (remember, dumped THREE times…) and that he couldn’t wait. so that’s why our anniversary is the 11th. We had our first Valentine’s Day three days later…where we spent all day together…sort of. Jon got really SUPER sick, like super high fever, upchucking kind of sick. And that’s why I spent our first Valentine’s Day taking care of him. But no matter who you throw my way, no matter how many times I have crushes on fictional characters, at the end of every single day, this is the only boy I need <3

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone :D I hope that it was good and that you remember, no matter what your relationship status, you are loved! You will always have people to love and if you’re reading this, there’s a damn good chance that I love you :) Spread the love. There should always be love in the world, family love, friendship love, romantic love.

And always remember, that these fictional characters we read, they’re awesome and lovable but they are just that: fictional. There are amazing people in this world to love, full of flaws and awesome. No one is perfect and no one is ever going to measure up to your favorite fictional man because he’s not real. They are never going to say the things that you read in the books but that’s okay. Because when you do find the right one, you’ll love them 100%, flaws and all.

Tuesday Top Ten-Favorite Star Wars Moments

So, medical I don’t know if you’ve been keeping up with the nerd news lately, but it was just recently announced that J.J. Abrams will be directing the 7th installment of the ever-growing Star Wars franchise.
And while I’m still unsure about how I feel about a 7th installment, I feel slightly better now that I know a reputable and mostly trusting director is at the helm. I’m more concerned on who is going to write the thing, because the story is what worries me the most. The cinematography of the prequel movies was great (although at some points, they should have eased up on the green screen…) but the stories are what made them so bad. So I hope that whomever they get to write the screenplay will impress me as much as J.J. Abrams as director.
Moving on though, because they just recently announced that there was a director, I thought a good Tuesday Top Ten would be remembering some of my favorite Star Wars moments. Enjoy!
Top Ten Star Wars Moments
10. “I have a bad feeling about this”
One of the best moments from any Star Wars film is when a character says that line “I have a bad feeling about this”. Its an iconic quote from the movies, one that I’ve always loved and always get a kick out of hearing. I love hearing Indiana Jones say it on the ride in Disneyland and I loved when Rex on the old Star Tours ride said it and C3PO says it in the current version. Its been in several TV shows and video games. Every once in awhile it sneaks up on your, in other movies, paying homage to one of the most popular franchises of all time. Its a comfort thing, a line that always appears and is one line you’ll never forget.

9. The opening scene of a New Hope

Now, I wasn’t even alive when the first Star Wars hit the movie theaters so I can only imagine what this scene was like for people seeing it back then. But I can remember as a kid, watching this movie for the first time and being pretty impressed by the opening scene. There is something seriously badass about watching the Star Destroyer loom over you as it passes across the screen. Its HUGE and IMPRESSIVE and it gives you the chills. I can’t wait until A New Hope hits the theaters again because I need to experience this scene on the big screen.
8. “Impressive. Most impressive.”
Okay, for those of you who may not know what I’m talking about, this is the part where Darth Vader and Luke are battling it out in Empire Strikes Back. Luke jumps out of the machine that’ll turn him to carbonite and avoids being captured. Darth Vader says “Impressive.” The part that I love about this, and its mostly because of my boyfriend, but after that, Luke shimmies up, maybe a foot and Vader goes “Most impressive.” I don’t know if Darth is talking about jumping or what, but the way it is portrayed is that Vader is mildly impressed with Luke jumping a good 10 feet, and VERY impressed by his ability to shimmy a foot or two. Its not even a part that would normally get much attention but every time I watch it, my boyfriend cracks up, so I look forward to this part.

7. Darth Vader defeating Emperor Palpatine
While I think its a *little* bit cheesy that this scary, intimidating villain turns out to be a softie in disguise, I do like that he is the one who defeats the Emperor and ends the power of the Sith (I mean, until you read books and you realize that this is NEVER going to happen…). To be quite honest, Vader is the one who kind of started the madness in the first place so it seemed only fitting that he would be the one to end it. And it WAS kind of cool to watch Vader, Anakin Skywalker, defend his son. Even though I had spent the entire trilogy wanting Luke to beat the Emperor, it worked that Vader did it, out of love for Luke’s mother. And hey, the Emperor was defeated! Yay! That’s a HUGE moment on its own!

6. “Aren’t you a little short to be a storm trooper”

Oh, Princess Leia, your sarcasm is just way too much to handle sometimes. She is captured, by the EVIL Darth Vader and has totally watched them BLOW up her entire home planet. It would be more than normal if she was falling apart, or even showing the tiniest bit of stress. Anybody would. But she’s not just anybody, she’s Princess Leia. Obviously a Stormtrooper coming into her cell is NOT a good thing and yet she immediately has a sarcastic remark ready for him. Its hilarious and it sums up Princess Leia pretty damn well.
5. Obi Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader light saber fight

All the non-believers hate this first lightsaber fight because they’ve seen the super special effects fight that have taken place in the prequel movies. And those are great and all but there is nothing like the first fight that takes place in the Star Wars movies. No one had seen a weapon like lightsabers before; it was like a classic sword fight but, like, 1000 times better. It’s also kind of scary too right…I mean, you could seriously chop off your fingers accidentally and that would be a HUGE problem. Think about it, Alec Guinness was not exactly a young man when he filmed Star Wars and he makes that fight look so super badass. I love it.
4. “Don’t get cocky kid”
I want to marry Harrison Ford…preferably the way he looks as Han Solo…or Indiana Jones. But mostly as Han Solo. I think that was one of the first times as a kid that I was like WHOA, that guy is hot…or as much as you could think someone is hot when you’re five. I just love this particular part in the movie because it just makes me laugh. You meet Luke Skywalker before Han Solo and you love him totally right off the bat, the innocent, full of heart farm boy. And he’s in his first “battle” and he’s like a little kid that’s accomplished something “I got him!” and seasoned adult, Han Solo, just kind of rolled his eyes and says “Don’t get cocky, kid” and its just hilarious.

3. Luke, I am your Father
Come on, how could this NOT be in the top ten of bet Star Wars moments ever! It was a lot different for me, when I first watched it because I already knew that Darth Vader was Luke’s father. But I can only imagine what kind of crazy, insane revelation this was in 1980. Star Wars had grown into a MEGA phenomenon and everyone had been DYING for this movie (it had been three years) and a bomp dropper like this is amazing. And Luke’s reaction is awesome. I think the best part about this too is how little people knew about this too. I mean, not even Mark Hamill knew this news, not even David Prowse (who actually played Darth), knew this. It was all filmed with a different script, a different secret revealed. Fantastic.

2. Luke blowing up the Death Star

Little farm boy Luke Skywalker, who literally found out that he’s of Jedi blood and about the rebellion and all that, climbs into an X-Wing fighter and takes down the DEATH STAR! The most badass space station capable of destroying an entire planet, and little Luke takes it down, and without using his scope! He just FEELS the force and blows that ship UP. It is one of the most epic moments in Star Wars history. True, they start rebuilding the Death Star and Lando and Wedge have to go blow it up again in Return of the Jedi but the epicness of Luke destroying the Death Star in a New Hope is just unparalleled. It shows Luke’s capabilities and his right to be a Jedi Knight. Its a pivotal moment for him, a moment where he changes from farm boy to warrior.
1. Han Solo and Princess Leia-I Love You
I know. So cheesy. Incredibly cheesy. Well, I am a girl and I am a nerd so it only makes sense that this moment would be the best moment for me. I mean, come on, Princess Leia and Han Solo are one of the most badass fictional couples ever. (I made a list once, check it out here). So when Leia finally blurts out “I love you”, I was cheering…and Han Solo, like the sexy badass that he is, just says “I know”. I KNOW. So awesome. So fantastically awesome. Han Solo can’t say “I love you too”, he’s too badass for that, so he says “I know” and its sexy and romantic and fitting and awesome. I dreamed for YEARS about saying I love you to a guy and having him say I know like that. (Side note: my boyfriend totally did this. He’s a keeper). Totally the best moment of the entire Star Wars saga.

Tuesday Top Ten-Weapons of Choice

Ahhhh it feels good to be back, prescription writing for the blog. I spent most of last week on an editing bender, trying to get A Little Less than Famous done. I procrastinated in the worst way and left it to the last possible moments. Luckily I had asked to help from others earlier on and well I work better under pressure anyway.
But it is done now and available for Kindle and Nook and their corresponding apps. You can find out how to buy it in this blog post.
Then immediately after finishing LLTF, my boyfriend and I took a weekend trip to San Francisco. Which was amazingly fun because I haven’t been there since I was a kid.
But anyway I’m back and we are back to a regular schedule. Today I will be doing the Tuesday Top Ten, and the Book of the Week will be back on Thursday and so on.
Now, this week’s top ten is all about those weapons of choice, the ones that our favorite fictional characters wield that we totally wish we could have. Here it is.
10. Trident
Picture 1
There’s something kind of badass about a trident. I’m not talking about the one Ariel’s father uses in Little Mermaid. I’m talking Poseidon from Percy Jackson and the delicious Finnick Odair from the Hunger Games. You put a trident in their hands and they become warriors. Finnick just looks like a pretty face and a hot body (which, I mean, he is) but he becomes pretty badass with a trident in his hand. I wouldn’t mind taking lessons on how to wield one from him. The best part is that you don’t NEED anything. You don’t need a bow AND an arrow or ammunition. You just need a trident in each hand and some badass skills.
9. Whip

There are two people who use a whip that make it one of the coolest weapons around: Indiana Jones and Isabelle Lightwood from the Mortal Instruments series. I mean, where would Indiana be without his trusty whip in his adventures? Nowhere, I tell you. And Isabelle? She uses her flashy gold and silver whip to chop up demons! There is something very sexy about that, which makes it even more awesome. I mean, Isabelle walks into a room, looking sexy as hell, dressed in all black, red lipstick, stilettos…and then pulls out that whip. And come on, the first thing that you’re thinking is WHOA! Then she uses it to chop demons into pieces…and she’s damn good at it. That’s awesome.
8. Stele

I don’t know that this is a weapon, but more a tool to assist a Shadowhunter. It’s wand like and pen like, and it’s used Mark Shadowhunters with runes. Runes are tattoos that help them right better: they give them stealth and swiftness, silence, strength, healing and fearlessness. I would love to draw these tattoos on me. One, I just love tattoos (I think I’m a little addicted). And two, they give you powers. They give you the ability to be stealthy or fearless or they help you to be invisible to mundanes (regular humans). Plus you just look damn cool.
7. Blaster

I know, they aren’t exactly the most civilized weapons in the galaxy and that Obi Wan Kenobi looks down on them with distaste but come on, the war couldn’t have been won without some good blaster power. Luke was the only with a lightsaber and he couldn’t take down the whole Evil Galatic Empire on his own now, could he? So we need a good blaster to help take down the enemy and we need the best man to handle it, Han Solo. Han Solo, the scoundrel with his loud and messy weapon, and his wild partner in crime, Chewie. I’m not talking guns here; I’m talking blasters. Because blasters are better, for their sound effects alone. Who doesn’t go around, saying “pew pew” after seeing Star Wars.
6. Sword

There’s nothing like a good ‘ol sword to make you feel pretty powerful. Look at everyone in the Game of Thrones. Once Upon a Time. Alanna, Keladry and Aly of Tortall. Every fairy tale ever. The Heir Trilogy. The Seven Realms novels. Lord of the Rings. Percy Jackson and his sword, Riptide. And on and on and on. There is a beauty and powerfulness to the idea of have skills in swordsmanship. Even just the idea of having a sword hang on my belt makes me feel more powerful. I want to walk casually into a room, my hand resting on my sword hilt, letting everyone know that I am not someone to toy with. And think about it, I’m a tiny person. I’m not someone you see and think “OH NO, SHE’S INTIMIDATING!” No way. But one of my favorite fictional swordswomen is Alanna of Trebond from the Song of the Lioness series and she’s the tiniest and fiercest heroine with a sword in her hand. If she can do it, I definitely can do it.
5. Bow and arrow

This is probably the most popular weapon right now. Between Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, Hawkeye in the Avengers, Oliver Queen a.k.a. Green Arrow in Arrow, and even Kili in The Hobbit. Legolas in the Lord of the Rings. Daryl in the Walking Dead. Merida in Brave. Even little Arya in Game of Thrones.  And on and on and on. Especially with Katniss Everdeen. Archery is the hip thing right now. And I’m right on board with that. The fact is, archery just looks SO COOL. Its kind of an old school weapon, you know? You don’t really see the Army or the Navy busting out bows and arrows and shooting them in Afghanistan and Iraq. But old school is awesome, and it just feels like…you have to have more talent to wield a bow and arrow. Sure, you need a good eye and some aim to shoot a gun but to use a bow properly is that much harder which is why its one that I wish I had.
Update: As I was writing this post, a commercial for the new Tomb Raider came on…and wouldn’t you know it, Ms Lara Croft herself seems to be using a bow and arrow nowadays…and that doesn’t surprise me a bit!)
4. Sonic screwdriver

Okay, this isn’t exactly a weapon. Okay, it isn’t a weapon at all. But its soooooooo cool and where the hell would the Doctor be without it? Stuck behind locked doors, confused about things he had never seen before, completely incapable of overriding something on a computer or a terminal or a ship or whatever. The fact is, the Doctor isn’t the Doctor without the sonic screwdriver (and the TARDIS but that’s a WHOLE ‘nother blog post). The sonic is just kind of this little magical device that can do pretty much anything, except when it comes to wood, and its a PRACTICAL weapon. It may not actually win you any battles but its a clever little tool and I definitely want one. Plus every single time the Doctor uses the sonic on something, he has some sort of intelligent nonsense to say and everyone believes him because they don’t know any better and he’s the Doctor so he has to be right. I’d like to just walk up to something random, sonic it and then spout off some eloquent bullsh*t. I’m sure I could do it.
3. Seraph blade
tumblr_mdp40zGZDy1rs9azoo1_500
For those of you who don’t know what a seraph blade is, its from the Mortal Instruments series (and maybe other series that deal with Nephilim, I don’t know). TMI is about a group of people called Nephilim or Shadowhunters, who have a sole purpose of keeping the earth safe from demons. They used their stele in order to draw Marks on their bodies to give them various strengths and powers. But the actual weapon that they use is called a seraph blade, a blade that looks like its made of ice, until you name it. A Shadowhunter gives a seraph blade its name, a name of an Angel because, of course, they are half angel/half human, and the blade begins to glow, and its the perfect weapon to take down a nasty demon. It just sounds so AWESOME. Its not a sword, its not a dagger; its something inbetween and its created for the single purpose of taking down a demon. AND IT GLOWS. I want it, because, let’s face it, besides being a wizard or a Jedi, I want to be a Shadowhunter most in the world.
2. A wand

I know, I know, its not number one. People are probably having a hissy fit right now but just pay attention for a moment okay? I want a wand because it basically can do ANYTHING. I mean, it can’t create food as we learned from Ron and Hermione in Deathly Hallows but it can duplicate it. You can hover things and you can summon things and banish them. You can change your appearance and enlarge things. You can turn off lights and open doors and you can make flowers bloom and so many things. You need seven years of schooling to master the purpose of using a wand and even then, I’m sure you don’t know it all. It is the ultimate weapon. You may ask, well, Sara, you’re a Potterhead, why isn’t it your number one? Well for two reasons: one, its not very big, which means I’m likely to lose it. I’m horrible at keeping track of things and I could totally see myself constantly losing my wand the way I lose my cell phone or my keys. And two, its SMALL. This wand is basically my lifeline as a wizard and its so small and insignificant. I’m so terrified it would be snapped in half and then where I be? Even so, its definitely a weapon I’d like to have.
1. Lightsaber

Obi-WanClassic
Ah, yes, the classiest weapon in all the galaxy. A weapon for a more civilized age. And seriously, what every little kid wishes they could have. Hell, what every ADULT wishes they could have. And if they don’t want one, well, my opinion is that they are straight up crazy. Its even BETTER than a traditional sword because it glows, in different colors of red, blue, green and purple and it can be deactivated so, you know, you don’t sit on it or something. (What? I can totally imagine stabbing myself in the butt with my sword when I go to sit down…). I don’t care who you are; lightsabers are super cool. The noise they make when they activate, the noise they make when you use them, the noise they make when they collide with each other. The gorgeous arc they make as you swing them at your opponent. How could you not want this? Its all the beauty and class of a sword but in a more badass format.
Hope you all enjoyed this edition of the Tuesday Top Ten (on a Wednesday but who’s paying attention) and I hope you all tune in tomorrow for the Book of the Week. I’ve read so many books the past few weeks (The ENTIRE Heir Trilogy, The Girl of Fire and Thorns, Matched, The Maze Runner, Beautiful Creatures, and so on) so I need to decide which one to actually review. I guess we’ll see tomorrow.
Until then, what are your favorite weapons (or fictional objects) of choice? Let me know in the comments!
