Tuesday Top Ten – My Favorite TV Shows

10. Gossip Girl

I don’t care how insanely cheesy or ridiculous or completely unrealistic this show is. I love every single moment of it. A bunch of bratty rich kids and their drama going down in the glitz and glam of the Upper East Side of New York…I was sold so fast. And I swear it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that Leighton Meester is absolutely adorable.

9. Supernatural

Two guys traveling around the country, information pills chasing down demons and all sorts of fun stuff? Sign me up. And while it did take me a bit to get into the show, sickness it didn’t take me long to get hooked on it. Especially once angels entered the scene. I loved a good angels and demons story, and Misha Collins is fabulous. I do think they’ve overstayed their welcome but I don’t totally complain when I see these three beautiful faces on my television screen ;)

8. Shadowhunters

Okay, this is totally cheating because its not even a show yet. They’re still filming and it has a very tentative release date for 2016. But you guys know this is one of my favorite book series PERIOD so I’m really excited that it got a second chance in TV form. I really have high hopes for it, I love the cast so far and and I’m super looking forward to its release next year. I am hoping so so much that it’ll quickly become my favorite.

7. Firefly

I LOVE THIS SHOW. Is anyone else as depressed as me that it only got one season and a movie? Wait, I know the answer to the question…if you aren’t depressed, you’re absolutely insane. This show is so good, a great mix of science fiction and romance and western and its just perfect. I love everything about this show. Sigh. I would do anything to bring this back.

6. Agent Carter

I was so excited to hear that this was going to be a TV show. Marvel isn’t totally the best when it comes to keeping up with the ladies. So to hear that there was going to be a show focusing on a badass lady, back when ladies weren’t supposed to be badass…I was so excited. And I loved every single moment of this show. I literally squealed with excitement when I heard there was going to be a season two. Everyone just rocks in this show and I can’t wait to see more, especially of Hayley Atwell!

5. The Flash

Its funny because I don’t watch Arrow, and The Flash is the spinoff of that show. But for some reason, there was something incredibly fun and exciting about this show. Plus I had heard Robbie Amell was going to be in the show and after the disappointment of The Tomorrow People being canceled after one season, I needed more of him lol. I’m glad that I decided to watch it though because its absolutely fabulous and I’m counting down the days until season 2.

4. Sherlock

I mean…Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, updated versions of the old Arthur Conan Doyle stories? WIN. Just…win. Everything about this show is just fabulous. It makes me laugh, it makes me cry, its just so good. Its written well, and they do such a great job with updating Sherlock Holmes while also keeping a good honor in the old stories. I love it. I don’t love that we only get a few episodes every three years or so…

3. Arrested Development

I have to give credit where credit is due. My ex boyfriend made me watch this show. I remember at the time I was so head over heels that I was pretty much willing to do anything for him so I was like, whatever, fine, we can watch it. Now I’m like, well we broke up but thank you for introducing me to one of the FUNNIEST shows I’ve ever watched. This show is amazing and I can watch it over and over again, and it still is funny. In fact, I really would like to watch it again…

2. Game of Thrones

I tried to read the books. I did. I read the first two and don’t get me wrong, I definitely liked them. But they aren’t my style. They’re heavy and just not my type of thing. But I fell in love with the TV show right away. Its hard not to love. Its dramatic and bloody and addicting. And you kind of want to keep watching because you never know who is going to die next and that’s pretty exciting.

1. Doctor Who

Of course. Its the only TV show that I have a tattoo from. Well, Shadowhunters but I don’t think that counts haha. I fell in love with this show and I’ve gobbled down each and every episode I could get my hands on. I love that each Doctor and each companion brings something different and unique to the show. I love that because of that, the show gets to continue. Its the longest running science fiction show. Its science-y and dramatic and emotional and romantic and hilarious and I love every minute of it, even the minutes that aren’t as good as the others ;)

Fandom Friday-Hemlock Grove

The Fandom Friday is a weekly feature, with each blog post written by a new contributor.

This is the weekly post where either myself, or a guest blogger, talks about a new fandom. See, I’ve had the experience in my life where I’ve been made fun or put down about my particular fandoms. And that has made me feel pretty crappy. But I’ve also put down other fandoms as well.

So I’ve decided to change that. I’m opening my world up to new fandoms, and the best way to do that is to bring people in to write about various fandoms. I’m very excited about this segment.

If you guys are interested in becoming a guest blogger for the Fandom Friday, feel free to email me at whatanerdgirlsays at gmail.com or contact me HERE

*      *      *     *     *

I’m Jace Vishus (@jacevishus) from Stardust & Shadowhunters (stardustandshadowhunters.wordpress.com). I’m here to let you all in on the very underrated Hemlock Grove fandom. I should warn you beforehand that Hemlock Grove definitely isn’t youth-appropriate, so please be wary.

Screen Shot 2013-08-22 at 11.30.11 AM

Hemlock Grove was published in 2012 by Brian McGreevy. Eli Roth also recently made it into a 13-episode Netflix Original series, and you can read the graphic novel prequel here. It’s classified as horror, and, in my opinion, exceeds that classification.

Screen Shot 2013-08-22 at 11.30.53 AM

Hemlock Grove is a psychological rollercoaster, taking you from one elated extreme to its depraved counterpart, twisting the plot on a dime. Set in the old Pennsylvania steel mill town the series is named after, Hemlock Grove follows a pair of delinquent youths – Peter Rumancek, the vagrant Romani gypsy, and Roman Godfrey, the obscene prodigal son – in their mildly altruistic quest to find and stop the “vargulf”, the term for a deranged werewolf, who has been killing off young women and leaving their remains all over town.

Screen Shot 2013-08-22 at 11.31.05 AM

They’re met at almost every turn by Dr. Chasseur, the “Fish and Wildlife agent” who is clearly more than she claims to be, or Dr. Pryce, the scientist running the top-secret Project Ouroboros. Everyone in Hemlock Grove seems to have a secret, whether they know it or not. Roman’s mother, Olivia, who inherited her short term husband’s conveniently lucrative steel mill and turned it into a biomedical research center after he more conveniently splattered his brilliant mind all over the wall, has an insatiable appetite for raw meat that rivals her own son’s fascination with blood. They share an uncanny talent for persuasion, as well.

Screen Shot 2013-08-22 at 11.32.12 AM

Roman, the walking anachronism, wants to find the vargulf and save the day like a knight, and Peter, not wanting his only friend to meet a gory demise, reluctantly lends his claws to Roman’s self-righteous cause. Can the find the vargulf? Who IS the vargulf? What, exactly, is so strange about Roman, his mother, and his Frankstein’s monster-esque sister Shelley? You’ll have to read and/or watch to find out!

http://31.media.tumblr.com/ee84874b685c2c2d57acf3f75cae6146/tumblr_mmia474a731qlmppmo1_r1_250.gif

I first discovered Hemlock Grove on a commercial on some obscure horror movie channel. The short preview didn’t do the show any justice at all, and I disregarded it. I came across it on Netflix a few weeks later and decided to give it a chance. The first time I watched it, I wasn’t really a fan. It didn’t make much sense, but I had to see it through. I definitely don’t regret it. I’ve watch the series four more times since then, and it just keeps getting better.

If you’re a fan of the macabre, and enjoy a good brain bender, I definitely suggest giving Hemlock Grove a chance, but make sure you watch it all the way through!

This week’s Fandom Friday is brought to you by…ME. Again.

Come on guys, don’t be shy, come join the fun and be a guest blogger. Its so easy! And I’m tired of hearing myself talk all the time :P

Anyway, here’s this week’s Fandom Friday!

Arrested Development

urlArrested Development is a comedy TV show with four seasons. It originally aired back in 2003, and was cancelled after the finale of season 3 in 2006. It remained kind of a cult classic, in a way, with a huge cult following and still had a TON of fans. When it was released on Netflix, the fandom base for it only grew as more and more people were able to watch it. It became, much like Firefly or Freaks and Geeks, one of those shows that was cancelled way too soon.

Netflix responded to that, and created a fourth season, to be released only on Netflix, this past May of 2013, to show what the characters have been doing since the finale in 2006.

url-1

The show follows the Bluth family, a wealthy family in Orange County, California, who gets themselves into a little bit of trouble. Michael Bluth is ready to take over his father, George Sr’s company, The Bluth Company, and start to distance himself from his crazy family. His mom Lucille isn’t the affectionate type and is usually drunk by noon. His sister Lindsay is selfish and high maintenance. His brother in law Tobias is….very, very clueless. His brother Gob is a failed magician and his brother Buster is just straight up dumb. But just as Michael thinks he’s going to take over his company, his father is arrested for embezzlement, fraud, maybe even some “light treason”.

Okay, and the way I describe it, you’d think it sounds like a drama or something, but its not. Its straight up comedy. Michael is ready to take off to Arizona with his son, George Michael, to escape the ridiculousness that his family but after realizing that family is the most important thing (not breakfast), he decides to stay and do what he can to keep them together and to save the Bluth Company. The show follows all the hilarity that ensues from this and creates a seriously funny show.

url-2

The fourth season picks up a little later after the third season ends. Without spoiling it for you, the third season ends with about five million different things going on at once and you’re cracking up and you’re going “NO THIS CAN’T BE THE END!” The fourth season has 15 episodes, all of which debuted on Netflix on the same day. Each episode follows a different character in the series: Michael, Gob, George Sr., Lucille, Buster, etc. and it brings us an update on how the family has been doing since the chaos of the season finale of season three. I feel like a lot of the reviews I saw of this season were bad but I also saw a TON that were good as well and I thought it was absolutely hilarious.

Now the first time I watched it was with my boyfriend. My boyfriend is actually the WAY bigger AD fan, but he doesn’t want to guest write and he hates the word “fandom” haha so I’m writing it instead. The first time I watched the pilot episode of this show was with Jon, before we were even together. He was really excited to show, said I was going to love it and it was so funny. We watched the extended pilot together, and he’s cracking up the whole time and I remember sitting there, going, WHAT IS THIS? And not in a good way.

Because I didn’t understand the humor really. I didn’t really understand what the show was aiming for. I didn’t get it, definitely.

But Jon somehow persuaded me to keep watching, and as the show continued, I realized a lot of the humor came from inside jokes within the show, references to other episodes and just references to pop culture in general, and when I finally understood the show, and the humor, I couldn’t stop laughing.

This show is one of the funniest shows out there. There aren’t a lot of shows that make me literally laugh out loud, and there aren’t a lot of shows that I memorize quotes from (Doctor Who, of course). The amount of jokes, and inside jokes and stupid jokes and racist (in good taste, of course) jokes and stereotype jokes and jokes jokes jokes are just too much to handle. All of the characters are supposed to be as dumb as they are or clueless or selfish or whatever and you love them for it.

You love how clueless Tobias is, and the amount of sexual innuendos he manages to include in EVERY SINGLE CONVERSATION. You love Lindsay and her blatant attempts to get laid and how they just NEVER work. You love that George Michael is totally in love with his cousin and is just the most awkward teenager I have ever seen in my entire life. Gob is one of the stupidest human beings I’ve ever met in my life but he’s lovable and his magic tricks are fantastic, and its Will Arnett and that guy is awesome.

I think one of the BEST things about the show is all the inside jokes, and one liners you get from it. I feel like I can quote Arrested Development randomly, more than I can quote a lot of things. They just have all these funny one-liners and all these one-liners that you can quote to an AD fan and they’ll start cracking up but if I tell you, you just won’t get it, like “there’s always money in the banana stand” or “no touching” or “I’ve made a huge mistake”. I love all the little lines that come out of the show. Each line they saw is pure comedic gold, and causes you to crack up.

Its one of my favorite shows.

Which definitely means you should watch it.

Seriously. All FOUR seasons are Netflix and you will bust through them so fast. This is hugely popular, a cult favorite, and it was a favorite enough for Netflix to buy the rights to it and create a whole new season 7 years later. If that doesn’t show you how amazing this show is, I don’t know what will. And any show that puts out a banana stand or stair car (watch the show, seriously) and creates huge lines for it, that’s a show well worth watching!

400537_381946011926267_625769565_n

Free frozen bananas at the banana stand? Love it.

599431_374164272704441_367410260_n

The Stair Car at the Grove in Los Angeles. You get a little bit of stares with this one.

*     *     *

Seriously, this is a show people are missing out on and they shouldn’t be. I quote this all the time and people stare at me, and I’m like, “Look, if you just watch Arrested Development, this wouldn’t be a problem!” Because its a seriously funny show and its one that I think is very underrated and shouldn’t have been cancelled with it was. But it being cancelled kind of helped to push it back up, and gain more fans, much like what happened with Joss Whedon’s Firefly. So hit up Netflix (I know you have Netflix), and definitely try out this show.

And if the humor doesn’t catch you right away, like it did with me, give it a few more episodes and you’ll start cracking up soon enough :)

*     *     *

I hope you guys enjoyed this week’s edition of Fandom Friday.

I really hope some of you can volunteer to participate in it as well :) I get tired of talking about the stuff I like, I want to hear more about the stuff YOU like!

Tuesday Top Ten-Best of 2013…So Far

Well, cialis 40mg guys, medical its July 2nd. This year is half over, and I can’t believe there’s still six months of awesome left.

The way I see it…2013 has been MY year so far. I’ve had a great year and I’ve had the chance to do a TON of things, I’ve had the chance to meet SO many people and I’m feeling so good this year. I feel like I’m finally on the right track. And not just in WhatANerdGirlSays world either.

My boyfriend just graduated university and I finally got into university, which means I’m on the downhill slope of my degree. Its just been SO great and I’m so happy.

So this week’s Tuesday Top Ten is a little different, and some of you may be a little disappointed, but I just kind of wanted to recap the awesome that has happened to me this year.

SO here it is: Sara’s Tuesday Top Ten of Best Things About 2013…So Far

10. Published A Little Less than Famous

303499_307910499329819_493806600_n

I’m dying to publish my own novel. I’m dying to be a published author like all the ones that I get SO excited to meet. And I was able to finish and self-publish my novel, A Little Less than Famous. And its not perfect. It could use a lot of editing work on it but I am so insanely proud of it. I’m proud of myself for finishing it. I’m proud of myself for writing it. I’m proud of myself every time someone reads it and likes it. I am so proud of it being part of my writing journey. I hope I can find some time to sit down and really edit it (or pay someone to edit it) and share it in all its perfection. For now, it is what it is and I am still so VERY proud of it. Almost every author that I’ve ever talked to has told me to keep writing, and to just finish something and I was able to accomplish that and I am proud of myself for that. On a side note, the book is ON SALE for only 99 cents until July 5th so click here to check it out!

9. Star Trek Premiere-My First Ever!

945603_10151661076114747_2076014487_n

I had never been to a full movie premiere before! Last year, I went to the Grove with a few people from LADA and we saw an advanced screening of the Woman in Black and Daniel Radcliffe WAS a special guest and that was really super awesome but this right here was SUCH an amazing experience. I’m a fangirl, I’m a geek, and I seriously get so excited to see famous people. I can talk to them, no problem at all, but all that anxiousness and excitement is WAY too much to handle. But what a GREAT experience for me and the other girls of iFandoms Collide. We got free t-shirts, saw an advanced screening of the movie, and saw Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto and SO MANY MORE cool people. And at the end of the night, we ended up on the channel 5 news. Which, let me tell you, probably had to do with the fact that we were flirting with the guy the whole time. But seriously, a COOL time, and now all I want to do is go to premieres all the time!

8. My First Ever Gallifrey One!

picture-6

I am a new Doctor Who fan. I’ve only been watching for a little over a year now, probably right after they put up season 6 on Netflix. But as soon as I started watching it, I was hooked. This is my favorite TV show, period. And when I found out from a few friends of mine that there was an ENTIRE Doctor Who convention, I was like, “okay, I gotta be there.” Now, unfortunately this convention is a little pricey but its TOTALLY worth it and my super awesome friend, Ana, bought me my badge before they sold out and I paid her back. And I am SO grateful she did that because WHAT an experience. It is probably one of the BEST cons I have ever been. First off, its in a hotel, which means its limited to how many people can go, which is great, because you’re not crowded *too* much. Two, its SO intimate because its ALL Doctor Who. Doctor Who 24/7. Three, it was just a blast. Karaoke until 5 am, seeing all kinds of Doctor Who actors and actresses, buying WAY too much Doctor Who merch. It was amazing.

7. Clockwork Princess

clockwork-princess-official-book-cover-cassandra-clare-31431560-1266-1920

This is EASILY the best book that I’ve read so far this year. And there’s a ton of epic books coming soon and I still think this will remain the best book of the year. Easily. I waited for this book for so long and then it was supposed to come out in December of 2012 and they pushed it back to March 2013 and I was just dying for it. Then I was going to a Cassie Clare event three days after the release, where I would get my copy and I was like, no way. I can’t wait three days! So I ordered it on my Kindle, refreshed my Kindle allll night, and then at 10 pm (midnight for where it was being published), it downloaded to my Kindle and I stayed up ALL night reading, finishing it at about 3ish am. My eyes were all bloodshot and raw, and I was sobbing and it was just SO much to deal with and NO ONE had finished it, obviously, because I had stayed up all night on its release day, before the bookstores had even opened, to read it. Every single person I know who has read it, has talked about what it did to them, especially that epilogue. What a beautiful book.

6. Discovering New Books: Leigh Bardugo, Marie Lu, Tahereh Mafi, Jessica Brody and more..

url

Seriously, I discover new authors all the time, mostly because I read so super fast and I have to find new things to read. But this year…seems to be a bit more and I attribute that to the combined factors that I know have a GoodReads that I am VERY active on, I have this blog, and I go to all these events now. I am discovering authors left and right, and they’re all so amazing, and I can’t keep up with my “to-read” list anymore. Before, I was just rereading the same books over and over again (which is okay, of course) but everyone would be like “You’re reading Goblet of Fire again!” or “You’re reading City of Bones again?!” and I was like, well, sure, because I don’t know what else to read. But NOW that I’ve made so many friends, especially all of YOU guys, I’m discovering new authors and new books and I’m loving it.  I am so excited for all the books that are now coming out in the second half of this year because I discovered their prequels in this half of the year.

5. City of Bones Meet and Greet at WonderCon

tmi-148

I am SO spoiled when it comes to City of Bones, at least so far. I mean, I’ve been SUPER bummed at missing out on the City of Bones panel at San Diego Comic Con because my best friend is getting married that day. And I realized, yeah, I do want to be there. But I’ve met them all already, the ones that are going to be there, AND I still have the TMI premiere coming up next month. So I’m still so lucky. I was able to be one of the five people that got to go to the VIP signing for City of Bones. I was planning on getting to WonderCon super early that day to try and get my hands on a wristband for the signing but it turns out, I didn’t even need to. Cassie did a contest through her Twitter, and I was picked and I got to go to the VIP signing where I got a book and a HUGE poster signed by Cassie, Jamie, Lily and Kevin. Cassie remembered me from the week before (see later), I told Jamie I was cooler than him (one of my finer moments haha), I could barely utter a word to the beautiful Lily, and I told Kevin that he was awesome in Gossip Girl. What a fantastic amazing experience.

4. Author Breakfast at Ontario Teen Book Fest

944643_371891146265087_230672172_n

Okay, so the whole reason I went to this fest was to meet Morgan Matson, Jessica Brody (again) and Marie Lu. I left that fest feeling like a million dollars, and meeting a TON of new authors that I now love and adore because I’ve read all their books and they are SO amazing. It was a seriously cool experience to sit down with these authors, and interview them for our first ever vlog post and to just sit and talk writing with them. I am an aspiring writer and being around all those published authors was TOO much for me to handle. I had a blast all day. All the panels were super awesome, Leigh Bardugo made me crack and has now become one of my favorite authors. Meeting Morgan after all this time of worshipping her book, Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour was an experience. But it was also great because the four of us from iFandoms Collide and my sister Jessica got to go to the author breakfast because we were bloggers and we really got an intimate time with all of the authors and that was just the best part. Especially since now, whenever we see any of these authors, they totally remember us. We made an impression!

3. Seeing the Arrested Development Banana Stand

400537_381946011926267_625769565_n

Okay, some people may be like, seriously, Sara? A banana stand? But it really is one of the BEST things about this year and there’s a lot of reasons why. I mean, Arrested Development is a GREAT show so there’s that. Frozen bananas (FREE ones) are SO delicious. And it was something that I could do with my boyfriend. My boyfriend is so incredibly patient and good with me being a fangirl and going to all these events and freaking out over things that most people just don’t get. He’s SO good with me, I swear. There are NOT a lot of boys in this world that would be as awesome as he is with me. I’m an intense person. But he’s the big Arrested Development fan and he got me into it almost six years ago, before we were even dating and it was one of those things that we always did together, watch that show. We’ve done that several times since then, with TV shows, but that was the first one and so we have kind of a bond with that. And it was super fun, celebrating that it had come back for a long long awaited fourth season. And its fun to be able to extend my nerd fun with my boyfriend every once in awhile :)

2. iFandoms Collide

Seriously, this would be number one if number one wasn’t so epicly epic. I am so grateful for meeting these four girls. I met Tatiana, Sylvia and Megan back in April, though we’ve known each other through Twitter for so much longer. We actually were all at WonderCon and didn’t even realize it. Megan was part of the normal autograph session for City of Bones but Sylvia and Tatiana were both at the VIP too, and we didn’t even realize it. Then, when the Festival of Books came around, we all realized that we lived within a few miles of each other, and decided to go together…and the rest, as they say, is history. The first day we ever spent together was April 20th, day one of the Festival of Books. That literally was ONLY two months ago. TWO months…and yet it feels like its been forever. We’ve bonded so fast, and we’ve created iFandoms Collide together and so many of the cool things that I’ve gotten to do this year is with them. So thanks Megan, Sylvia and Tatiana for coming into my life and making it fangirl awesome. I can’t wait to go on the road trip with you, stalk Robbie Sheehan, hit up the City of Bones, Catching Fire and Divergent premieres with you and just be friends forever :)

And Gabby and Paulina, I love you girls too! I wish I saw my other ifandoms girls just as much :D

1. Meeting and Interviewing Cassandra Clare

I can’t believe this even happened. All these months later and I’m still like, I interviewed one of my absolute favorite authors. I got to INTERVIEW her. I got to sit across the table from her and interview her and she gave me a hug and she saw my tattoo and took pictures of it with her phone and gave me a cool epic Clockwork Princess poster that, like, no body else has and a Clockwork Princess pendant designed by Hebel and ohmygod. I couldn’t even handle it. I entered the contest, and just never thought about it until I got the email from Allison Tran at the Mission Viejo Library and just DIED. I was so excited, I started jumping up and down at school…and I’m in college, by the way. I was SO nervous to meet her and so nervous to interview but she was so cool, and she made me feel super relaxed and answered my questions and told funny stories and its an experience that I’ll NEVER ever forget, no way, as long as I live.

If you’re interested in watching the interview, here it is!
