Exclusive Interview with Artist Cassandra Jean!

I am very pleased to share this interview with you today. As a huge Shadowhunter Chronicles fan, case I have enjoyed the artwork that Cassandra Jean has produced for the fandom, and am excited about the new things coming, like the calendars and The Secret Treason graphic novel.

For those of you who don’t know, Cassandra Jean is an artist. She works on many things, like original graphic novels, and does artwork for other YA novels, like Beautiful Creatures, The Lynburn Legacy, Shades of London and The Raven Boys. You can check out her website, and her artwork, here.

Cassandra Jean became known to me when she started doing the artwork for the Shadowhunter tarot card series.

Here are some examples:

There are SO many more of these, and you should check them out, because they are SO cool.

After this, I decided to check out Cassandra’s website, where she does a multitude of artwork, all of it so talented and beautiful. I enjoy any time she does work, and especially when its from the Shadowhunter Chronicles. Occasionally she does “sneak peek” or “spoiler” work for City of Heavenly Fire, or to celebrate a holiday and such.

Just recently, she unveiled the Men of the Shadowhunter Chronicles calendar, featuring all of our favorite hotties from the series. You can see all those by clicking here.

Now, I’ve had the awesome opportunity to interview the lovely Cassandra. Enjoy!

Sara: What is your background in art? When did it become something that you were really passionate about?

Cassandra: I’ve pretty much always wanted to be an artist since I was a child. I think there might have been a year in elementary school where I considered being a veterinarian (animals!) but that didn’t last long. I have always wanted to draw. I come from an artistic family so they’ve been a big influence on me and have always encouraged my artistic side. My mother writes, my father paints, my grandparents were art teachers, photographers, writers, seamstresses… so, yeah, I’ve basically always been into art. I majored in Illustration in college and started working on graphic novels straight out of school.

CJ_Will_&_Tessa_1

Sara: How did you get involved with doing artwork for Cassandra Clare and the Shadowhunter Chronicles?

Cassandra: Through my fanart actually! She liked a drawing I had done of Will Herondale and approached me about working on the Shadowhunter Codex. I said YES (of course!) and the rest is history! Since then I’ve had the pleasure of illustrating a lot of things for her, she’s so much fun.

Sara: How do you approach a piece of artwork based on something that has already been written?

Cassandra: Working on something that someone else has written is a lot different from creating your own story from scratch. While working on an original artwork, you are using a character who is unknown and you have complete control over who they are and how they look. But while working on something that has already been written, you’re interpreting something that already exists. Neither one or the other is better, but both processes have their own pros and cons. When I work on something already written, I get to skip the whole script writing stage! But, there is a lot of pressure to get things right. Because these are characters that people have already read about and fallen in love with, and the fans will notice if you mess something up. So in order to get things right, I read the book, and while reading, I take careful notes about the characters. I write down their names, their family, their appearances (hair, eyes, facial structure, fashion sense, quirks, habits, etc) so that when I draw them later, I can consult my notes.

Sara: So many people know you as the artist behind the Shadowhunter tarot cards, the City of Heavenly Fire sneak peeks and now the Shadowhunter Men calendar, but what other art do you do?

Cassandra: Well! At the moment my life is pretty Shadowhunter-ed up! But I work as an illustrator for YenPress. I’ve done the graphic novel adaptations of “Beautiful Creatures” and “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” and a short comic titled “Something Wikkid”. And I have more books lined up!

Sara: What is your process like? What sort of mediums do you use?

Cassandra: I work almost entirely on a computer. Sometimes when I’m sketching up thumbnails for comic pages or trying to decide on the layout for an illustration I will use pencil and paper, but most all of my process is done on the computer these days. I use a tablet so that I can draw digitally into programs like SAI and photoshop.

Sara: What is sort of your goal when you are doing a piece of work? How do you work to capture the essence of a character?

Cassandra: Uhm… hard question! Well, I read the book first and foremost. Since that’s the best way to get to know a character. When I draw them, I try to keep in mind their personality. If they are sexy and flirty, or shy, or quiet and moody. Our personalities, and the character’s personalities, effect how they dress or how I would pose them. Often when I draw a picture I try to focus on the overall mood. Like if I’m in the mood to draw something sad, or happy, or sweet. Then I try to pick characters to draw that suit the mood I’m in. It seems to work out more naturally that way.

Sara: You’ve worked on so many different projects besides The Mortal Instruments like mangas, and Beautiful Creatures and Raven Boys artwork. Are there ever any challenges in doing so many different things or do you like the challenge of that?

Cassandra: I like the challenge. In fact, I kind of need it. No matter how much I love something, I can get exhausted drawing it over and over without any variety. That’s the sort of thing that can send me into a slump. So that’s why I draw so many different subjects. It’s refreshing, and I feel like it keeps me on my toes. Especially when it comes to comics. A comic can take me 8-9 months to finish, and every page is filled with tons of drawings of the same characters. So working on a variety of fanart and projects at the same time prevents me from falling into a rut.

mlol_chapter1.00

Sara: What are some projects that you’ve worked on that some people don’t know about but you’d really like them to?

Cassandra: I used to illustrate an online comic called Land of Lions! I haven’t been able to work on it for several years now, since Yen Press started hiring me for work, and these days I’ve improved a lot so the artwork in it is a bit old. But I’m still pretty proud of what I did with it. If people were interested I’d be flattered if they took a look at it. It’s up on a website called MangaMagazine.net In fact that website has a lot of awesome stuff you should check it out some time if you’re interested in reading original works online.

Sara: What are some of your hobbies besides artwork? Do you read, and have you read the books that you’ve done the artwork for?

Cassandra: Art kind of eats up my life. It’s my work AND my hobby. But I do read a lot too. I have of course read all the books I’ve done artwork for. I try not to draw characters for things I haven’t read because I think that if I didn’t, they wouldn’t turn out right. I wouldn’t have a very good grasp on what the characters looked like, how they acted or dressed… (with the exception of the Dark Artifices and TLH which have not been written yet, but Cassandra describes the characters to me in detail so that I get them right) So yeah! All the series I’ve done drawings of, I’ve read, and I’ve read plenty that I haven’t done art for either, sometimes I like to just read. I also play a lot of video games when I get the chance. And rearranging my book shelves. Does that count as a hobby? Because I love doing that.

Sara: What are you working on now and what can we expect from you in the future?

Cassandra: Lately, I’ve been trying to slowly hash out an original story that I’d like to illustrate. But I think it will be quite some time before that’s ready to show off. I’m also drawing the Shadowhunter Calendars still. You can also expect the “Miss Peregrine” graphic novel to be in stores in October along with the Shadowhunter Codex (some of my illustrations are in there, though I haven’t seen the book yet myself so I’m not sure which ones made the cut!) Also the next book I’m working on, which was leaked a few days ago, is The Secret Treasons with Cassandra Clare. So please look forward to it!

Sara: What can you tell us about The Secret Treasons, and what and when can we expect that?

Cassandra: I can’t tell you much about it other than what you already know. It follows Valentine and the Circle back in their younger days. I’m looking forward to drawing not only the younger versions of Valentine, Jocelyn and Luke, but also drawing the characters that we never got to meet in the books because they had already passed away. Stephen, Michael… I’m so excited about working on a Shadowhunter comic. Hopefully soon, the publisher (Yen Press) will release more information about it for you guys to feast on.

Sara: A nice little fun question that I ask all the people I interview: who is your fictional crush?

What really happened in Peru - Ragnor Fell 4

Cassandra: Crush? As in just one? UH…Ragnor Fell! My big cranky green lima bean. What’s that? No, he’s not dead! He’s just…hibernating!! [sound of gross sobbing in the distance]

For those of you who don’t know, Cassandra Jean is an artist, most known for her Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices fan art. The Midnight Heir Short Story Review

The Midnight Heir by Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees Brennan

GoodReads Synopsis:

In Edwardian London, salve Magnus Bane discovers old friends and new enemies—including the son of his former comrade Will Herondale. One of ten adventures in The Bane Chronicles.

Magnus thought he would never return to London, find but he is lured by a handsome offer from Tatiana Blackthorn, whose plans—involving her beautiful young ward—are far more sinister than Magnus even suspects. In London at the turn of the century, Magnus finds old friends, and meets a very surprising young man . . . the sixteen-year-old James Herondale.

This standalone e-only short story illuminates the life of the enigmatic Magnus Bane, whose alluring personality populates the pages of the #1 New York Times bestselling series, The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices series. This story in The Bane Chronicles is written by Sarah Rees Brennan and Cassandra Clare.

My Review:

I think this installment of the Bane Chronicles is my favorite so far, and it really boils down to the fact that it really makes absolutely no sense and it leaves you hanging. I believe this short story, really, is an introduction to the mysterious TLH series that Cassandra Clare has planned, to follow the lives of the children of the characters in the Infernal Devices series. James Herondale is the son of William Herondale and Tessa Gray and he seems to be even more tragic and messed up than his father had been.

We have no information on TLH at all, besides the fact that it’ll be about the children and that its initials are TLH. Now, I feel like we have an idea of what to expect from this series. We see a very messed up James Herondale, who is in love with someone he definitely shouldn’t be (seriously, that girl is freaky) and we also meet Tatiana Blackthorn, who is angry and has a vicious vendetta against some Shadowhunters and wants help that Magnus cannot give. But Tatiana doesn’t seem the person to give up easily and it really helps me to believe that this what to expect from that series. Its a bit frustrating because you know this series won’t be coming for awhile, because The Dark Artifices is slated to release before that, and the next Bane Chronicle, The Rise of Hotel Dumort, has absolutely nothing to do with that, so now I have to wait to see what happens with James Herondale and his love and his desire to make as much trouble as possible and to find out what happens with Tatiana Blackthorn and her vendetta.

I will say this though, it was absolutely beautiful to see Tessa and Will and Jem, as Brother Zachariah, again. It was wonderful to see how much in love Will and Tessa were, but also to see how in love they all were with each other. No matter what happened with Jem as a Silent Brother, the three of them still had an unbelievable bond and they were still close and they still just loved each other so much. It made me think of Clockwork Princess and I swear, I just about died all over again. Thank you, Cassandra Clare, for killing me once again.

Blogger Spotlight-Eilidh from British Nephilim

One of the best parts about running this blog is having the ability to meet some really cool people, diagnosis and some of the coolest people that I have met have led me to really cool blogs. I’ve said it before, no one’s blog is 100% original but everyone’s voices are different so there are blogs that I love to read because I love the writer, and I love the passion that they show for what they are writing. They are fun and interesting to read and they inspire me to get better and better in my blog.

So I decided to do a feature (inspired by Megan at the Nerdy Girlie’s Geek Girls Gab), where I profile the bloggers that I love. Not only do I get to find out more about them, but I also get to share them with you guys! Most of the bloggers that I follow are like me, nerd girls, fan girls and they enjoy the same things as me, and you! Every blogger that I profile is one that is super important to me and I urge you to check them out!

If you are interested in being featured on the Blogger Spotlight, feel free to contact me, please! I would love to hear from you, to feature you on the blog and to help spread the word about it!

Sara: Tell me a Little Bit About Yourself:

Eilidh: I love to read and write, I also spend a lot of my time pretending I’m famous and dating someone famous (this is normally Jamie Campbell Bower, of course!). My favourite book is The Mortal Instruments: City of Glass. My favourite place in the world is Disneyworld in Florida and my favourite city is San Francisco! My hobbies are playing loads of sports and planning trips around the world!

Sara: Tell me about your blog:

Sara: What inspired you to start your blog?

Eilidh: Sarah and myself had noticed there wasn’t really a site in that was specifically for British Shadowhunters. A lot of sites run competitions that is just for the US and we wanted to give the opportunity for British Shadowhunters to join in as much as they could.

Sara: What is your favorite nerd memory?

Eilidh: This is a really hard question!! I have 3, because it’s so hard for me to pick.
1. When Cassie followed me on twitter!
2. When Kevin Zegers tweeted me.
3. When my amazing friends from LA decided to surprise me and get Robbie Sheehan to sign a book from me – I cried so much my eyes were so puffy my dad thought I had reacted to something!

Sara: What are you most looking forward to, as far as new books/movies/etc?

Eilidh: New books would have to be Allegiant (Divergent series) and OF COURSE City of Heavenly Fire! I’m also looking forward to any books coming out by JL Armentrout!! As for films, City of Bones and Divergent, as well as The Fault in Our Stars. I also am looking forward to Obsidian to go through the film-making process!! So exciting!

Sara: As my blog is mostly about books and reading, what are some of your favorite books or authors to read?

Eilidh: My two favourite authors are Cassandra Clare and JL Armentrout. My favourite book is The Mortal Insruments: City of Glass… closely followed by JL Armentrout’s Covenant Series. (I love that series SO much!!)

Sara: What are some of your favorite blogs to follow?

Eilidh: WhatANerdGirlSays, City of Shadowhunters, FanGirlFeeels. I also keep up with the LuxenArmy and ClubFandemonium a lot. TMI Source is always on my list and I also love My Hunger Games to keep me up-to-date with other fandoms, iFandomsCollide is also great for the mixture of fandom culture

Sara: Who is your fictional crush (what, we’re nerd girls, we all have one!)

Eilidh: Easy! Jace from the Mortal Instruments, of course. Even Will holds a strong place in my heart, as does James. I think I’m just a Herondale girl through and through! But I do love Aiden St Delphi from the Covenant Series too!

Last Word from Eilidh:

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ASKING ME TO DO THIS! I LOVE YOU!

Sara: Tell me a Little Bit About Yourself:

Tatiana: I really LOVE reading, writing, singing, dancing, acting and being creative. BIG fan of the arts! Harry Potter, and Disneyland are probably my two favorite things in the world (but I’m not really sure, I mean, I haven’t really traveled the world yet, but for now, we can go with that)! My hobbies include reading TONS of books & attending book signings. I also like going to movie premieres/red carpet events (especially for book based films). I enjoy making new friends pretty much anywhere I go! <3

Sara: Tell me about your blog:

Tatiana: City of Shadowhunters is a Mortal Instruments fan site that I launched early this year. It follows the latest news and updates on The City of Bones film along with all of Cassandra Clare’s latest projects, including TMI, TID,TDATLH and The Bane Chronicles! From the moment I picked up Cassie’s books, I just really fell in love with the world of Shadowhunters and Downworlders. I mean, the stories really had such an impact on my life and the way that I viewed the world. The stories really filled my heart with something that might have been missing before I ever read them; and I really wanted to share that and pay it forward, so I started up a fan site! :D

shadowhunterpose1

Posing at WonderCon, showing my Shadowhunter pride. ;)

Sara: What inspired you to start your blog?

Tatiana: I’ve been attending book signings and movie premieres/ fan camps for quite some time and I really felt like sharing the experiences with my closest friends. When I noticed that my friends weren’t listening, I decided to get online and share these awesome personal experiences with any fangirls that would listen (hehe). The idea for a fan site really just came from me wanting to share my experiences with friends; it just grew from there.  I have some really awesome memories that I didn’t just want to keep to myself. The Mortal Instruments IS my favorite book series (since Harry Potter) so I wanted to start up a fan site dedicated to that. I fell in love with this series, and its very close to my heart.

Sara: What is your favorite nerd memory?

THGpose

At fan camp for The Hunger Games movie premiere, just met the tributes!

Tatiana: Being a TOTAL geek, I’m not in short supply of nerdy moments, but my favorite has to be when I went to The Hunger Games movie premiere. I had spent the entire weekend I at fan camp, and we were running low on sleep and energy. The absolute BEST moment was when I was in the fan section on the red carpet and a news channel came to interview me asking why I decided to camp out. She had interviewed me, and then asked where I was from. Here’s how that went:

Newscaster- “So, where are you from?”

Me- “I’m from District 7! We harvest wood!”

Newscaster- “No, where in the United States?’

Me- “There is NO United States! We live in a dystopian world– We have Districts! …I am from District 7… “

It wasn’t until after she’d wrapped up our interview that my friends let me know she was talking about my actual hometown. I was so embarrassed when I’d realize what I’d actually said. It was definitely a laugh that my THG fans and I still talk about. hehe.

Sara: What are you most looking forward to, as far as new books/movies/etc?

Tatiana: I am MOST looking forward to release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones movie! I really cannot wait to see it. I predict that it is going to be AMAZING!  As far as movies go, I’m also look forward to Catching Fire and Divergent! For books, I’m looking forward to Allegiant (Divergent 3),  and The Mortal Instruments: City of Heavenly Fire. I’m being as patient as I can until CoHF comes out, but I really cannot wait to read it! In the meantime, I’m having a lot of fun predicting all possible outcomes with the rest of the fandom. <3

Sara: As my blog is mostly about books and reading, what are some of your favorite books or authors to read?

Tatiana: I’m SO excited about this question because I really really enjoy reading! I LOVE reading classics, anything written by Jane Austen or the Bronte sisters. Harry Potter is my ABSOLUTE favorite series, ever (JK Rowling is a GENIUS)! The Mortal Instruments (anything by Cassandra Clare, really). I find that I am a big fan of a lot of the YA series’ out there like: The Divergent series, The Hunger GamesDelirium and Chaos Walking (to name a few). :)

TwilightWasted4

Here I am at the Twilight Fan Camp, feeling a little Twilight Wasted after meeting some of the film’s stars. :)

Sara: What are some of your favorite blogs to follow?

Tatiana: “WhatANerdGirlSays” of course!

I really love following my friends’ blogs: “IAmDivergent” and “FangirlFeeels“. I also keep up with Page to Premiere for a good mix of all the fandoms and the latest movie/casting news. “MockingJayNet” & “Down With The Capitol (DWTC)” are my favorite Hunger Games fansites (I’m a HUGE THG fan). And, of course, “TMI Source” for The Mortal Instruments news! <3

Sara: Who is your fictional crush (what, we’re nerd girls, we all have one!)

Tatiana: The Herondales (William and Jace)! I just cannot get enough of them. It’s hard to pick, but I can honestly say that Will Herondale is my ALL TIME favorite character! I just LOVE him! <3

One Last Word From Tatiana:

Special THANK YOU to my Fangirl Twin Sara for featuring me! You’re a DOLL! ILY! <3

Dear Cassandra Clare

????????????????????????????????????????????????

I have been so lucky today to share two amazing things with you guys!

The first was my interview with Cassandra Clare, medical which is SUPER awesome, here and I am extremely happy and proud of, and you can watch it here.

Now my second big news of the day is this:

My dear friends, Megan, Tatiana, Sylvia and I, from our combined blog, iFandoms Collide, were talking and we realized how super lucky we are to live where we live. Being in such close proximity to Los Angeles gives us a ton of opportunities that other people just may not have.

For instance, in the last month, we’ve had the opportunities to meet super cool authors like Veronica Roth and Lauren Oliver, Maureen Johnson and Melissa de la Cruz, Sarah Dessen, Morgan Matson, Gayle Forman, Robin Benway, and on and on. We’ve meet Harald Zwart, the director of City of Bones, and three cast members: Jamie Campbell Bower, Lily Collins, and Kevin Zegers.

And we’ve all met Cassandra Clare. Megan met her twice, Sylvia met her twice, and Tatiana and I both met her three times. In the last month.

We are very very fortunate.

We are also going to be very fortunate this summer. We are all planning on going to the premiere of City of Bones. Which could mean VERY close proximity to a lot of stars from the movie, crew, and of course, Ms Cassandra Clare, herself.

So we had this idea: let’s reach out to all of you, all of you who aren’t as fortunate as us. You guys are just as dedicated, just as strong, just as crazy as the four of us. You guys laugh and cry when you read the books, and worship the characters, and count down the days until the next book, and swoon over Jamie, Kevin, Godfrey and Robbie. You guys are just like. So why shouldn’t you have a chance?

So here’s what we are doing: we are creating a book, a book full of letters and drawings or a letter within a drawing or a drawing within a letter, whatever you so desire, that are all addressed to our beloved author. They can be funny or deep or silly or serious or whatever. What you have to say to Cassandra Clare, you can say it now!

We’re going to bind it together, wrap it up and give it to Cassie at the premiere. This way we can bring all of you with us. We’ll have a piece of each and every one of you guys with it.

How does that sound? You like it? I hope so! Here is the information/rules for how to get your letter/drawing/letter-drawing into this book!

(and yeah there’s rules, there’s always rules! But, hey, Sed lex dura lex ;) )

The Rules!

1. Please share this with all the TMI/TID fans you know! Share on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, whatever! We want to get as many contributions as possible. But be discrete! Don’t tell Cassandra! I’m sure she may find out anyway but we’d like to try as hard as possible to surprise her with this book at the premiere!

2. All letters and pictures have to be standard letter size or smaller, meaning 8.5 in by 11 in. I’m not sure what that is in cm but its a standard notebook paper size. If they are not the correct size, I cannot guarantee they’ll make it in :(

3. Letters/drawings cannot be more than 3 pages. Remember, we’re trying to get letters and drawings from people all over the world.

4. Letters must be sent to the address provided by August 1st, 2013. Any letters or drawings received after this date are not guaranteed to be part of the book. You can start sending them now, of course :)

We are working on getting a P.O. box set up but in the meantime, letters and drawings will be sent to my personal address. Because I do not wish to broadcast my personal address on here, please contact me HERE, and I will send you my personal address until we get a P.O. box.

5. Please keep in mind, these NEED to be appropriate. We are giving them to Cassandra Clare and I don’t want to give her anything offensive, crude, rude, or anything like that. We will be reviewing whatever it is you send us before putting it in the book so know that we will not put your contribution in if it is inappropriate.

6. If you are unable to send it via mail, you are more than welcome to send it via email, as a scan. Keep in mind that it will be a print out of whatever you send and it may not be 100% clear. But you are more than welcome to email submissions to us as well at whatanerdgirlsays@gmail.com

We are SO very excited about this book and we absolutely canNOT wait until we start getting submissions from all of you!

Don’t forget to share with all your TMI/TID friends and to get those submissions in! And try to keep it a secret from Cassie as much as possible :)

Happy Shadowhunting!
