MY REVIEW:
This book has been hyped in my mind for quite some time, considering it just came out a few weeks ago. It seemed that no matter where I turned, it seemed to pop up! The cover draws your eye automatically and I found myself intrigued every time I saw it. Finally I caved and got it in my hands (thank you Meghan!). I had no idea what it was even about, I hadn’t even read a synopsis. But I will say this: this book lives up to all the hype that surrounds it. Sara Holland writes a beautiful, dark, compelling and romantic fantasy that left me practically salivating for more.
I really enjoyed the world that Sara built. It was a beautifully built world and the magic was smooth and dangerous and intriguing. The idea that blood is tied directly to time was incredibly interesting and I immediately bought into it. Its a luxury, and the more of it you have, the better off you are. You are paid in time and you pay debts with time and it just made so much sense to me and it was seriously so interesting, while at the time, insanely scary. The idea that you could throw the time of your life around like that, losing and gaining, depending on what your life was like, was so dark.
Next, let’s talk characters. Jules is just the tip of the iceberg in interesting characters in this novel. Every person you meet in this novel is their own mystery. I kept getting distracted with each person that came on the page and I fell in love with all of them. There was something dark, dangerous and romantic about all of the characters. Jules and Liam and Ina and the queen and Caro and on and on. Each character stood out so much. They each could have their own novel and I would devour it. They were genuine, familiar but at the same time, mysterious and full of secrets. They are what keeps this novel addicting from beginning to end. I felt like each page revealed something new about a different character.
Lastly, I loved the story that the world and the characters built together. Every moment mattered, and when things started coming together, folding into each other and bringing together the bigger picture, opening doors and revealing the answers to questions asked earlier, I was even more intrigued. Sara was so good at keeping the mysteries hidden until the right moment and she knew the right moments to reveal just enough to make you want more. I finished this book so mad that it just came out because that means its going to be AGES before the next book comes out!
