MY REVIEW:
When I first read that this was basically The Breakfast Club with a murder, I was super into it. Then I kept seeing this book stay stubbornly on the bestseller list for weeks and I found out why soon enough. This book is fantastic.
This book is a fantastic whodunit wrapped up in high school drama, with break ups and hookups, social media and more. Sometimes I got so caught up in the twists and turns that I would lose track of how many pages I was reading in mere minutes. Every single one of the characters were alive and genuine and addicting to watch. They each matched their labels but they also had secrets and juicy ones at that. They all stood out, apart from the others, and I think thats an incredibly hard thing to accomplish as a writer. Karen writes four completely individual characters and she writes them so well that its hard to even guess who could have possibly killed Simon.
Which brings me to the finale, the reveal of WHO DID IT! I won’t spoil anything because its completely worth the wait to find out, but I definitely did not see it coming. Even as the clues unfolded on the pages in front of me, I could not have guessed and when it came to light – discovered by an unlikely character – it made sense, all of the pieces falling together for a juicy and satisfying ending.
I really loved this book because I thought that Karen took what was great about YA contemporary literature – the ups and downs of being a teen, figuring out who you are, break ups and make ups and hookups, falling in love for the first time, making mistakes and so on – and combined it with a delicious murder investigation and I was addicted from the moment that Simon died to the moment his killer was revealed. I am very impressed for a debut author and I honestly can’t wait to see what she does next.
