MY REVIEW:
I have anxiously been waiting for the release of this book basically since I turned the last page of Heartless and wanted a new Marissa Meyer book in my hands. I had read a little bit of the synopsis but that was ages ago. I just knew one of my faves was putting out a new book and that I needed it in my hands. When I walked into Barnes and Noble to purchase my copy, I was slightly thrown off by the fact that it was HUGE. I mean, I read huge books all the time but I did not expect this one to be so daunting!
You don’t for one moment notice that this is a huge book.
Seriously, from page one, I was hooked. This book is a Marvel or DC movie come to life but, unlike those movies, I have no idea who is good or bad. The Anarchists and the Renegades are both so sure in their purpose and neither one of them feel like the bad guy to me. Its action packed from the beginning and its a thrill ride the entire time. It reminded me of X-Men and Marie Lu’s The Young Elites and Brandon Sanderson’s Steelheart. It’s a much darker version of the superheroes but its also fun and FUNNY. The story is constantly moving forward; there honestly doesn’t feel like a slow moment at all in the entire book. You’re constantly wondering what is going to happen next.
Literally from the moment you open the first page, the book is full of action, and its addicting and fun. There are so many prodigies – people with some sort of superpower whether renegade or superhero – and in the beginning, it was a little hard to keep track of, but once you get a hold of it, I loved it. I loved hearing about all the different powers especially since some of them are just so out there and awesome. It was so much more than super strength and invisibility and that sort of thing. A girl who can transform herself into thousand of butterflies, a girl whose blood becomes a weapon. It was so insanely cool.
Which brings me to the characters themselves and how complex each one is, especially when their personalities reflect their powers and vice versa. Its what makes the dilemma between Renegades and Anarchists so difficult. There are amazing, dynamic people on both sides and they’ve both experienced their own losses, they both have their own reasons. There is a fairly large cast of characters in this novel but Marissa never makes it feel that way because she makes each one stand out on their own and I think thats incredibly important.
The biggest reason I really loved this book is that its not a clear cut bad guys versus good guys and I think that’s Nova’s eventual conflict in the book. She’s an Anarchist. She wants to end the Renegades as revenge for what they did to her family. She starts to do so by infiltrating the Renegades program, becoming one of them to learn more about them, and I think that causes confusion for her because I think she genuinely likes her teammates in Adrian, Oscar, Ruby and Danna. I loved that. There was no black and white answer there; its a very gray area and I think that there are going to be a lot of questions asked in the next book. It’s a complicated dilemma. I can’t wait to find out more.
