My Review:

As soon as I finished Lauren Miller’s Free to Fall, I knew I had to get my hands on Parallel. I had no idea what it was about but that doesn’t even matter. Free to Fall was creepy and futuristic and incredible and I didn’t have to be worried about being attached to multiple books. I like that. I had to wait until the Girls Gone Sci-Fi event in Redondo though, so I could support the bookstore and all that.

A couple days ago, I was stuck in bed, and usually when that happens, I read. I read Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo because it was its release day and I was dying to find out what happened next in Leigh’s epic fantasy monstrosity of a great trilogy. I finished that fairly quickly (more on that later) and decided to pick up Parallel.

I fully intended to read some of it and then go to sleep like a completely normal person but I didn’t. I broke that intention so quickly because I literally could not put down this book. I finished it at 3 a.m.

Abby is living her life, making a movie in Los Angeles, and she’s wondering how on earth she got to this point, when two parallel worlds collide, and she’s in an alternate reality of her life. There was an earthquake a year previously, the collision, which caused her parallel self to take over her life. Each day that Abby wakes up could be a completely different story because of the decisions and paths that her parallel self takes in the path. It sounds a little confusing and it was for me at first, but you quickly understand as you watch it unfold. It reminded me a bit of Lauren Oliver’s Before I Fall, where one decision could change the course of events in the future.

And that’s what gets you so tied into it. You honestly have no idea what is going to happen next. Younger, parallel Abby is making such different decisions from the ones that Abby originally made and its putting her into very confusing situations. She’s both happy and unhappy with the different life that she’s living. Its addicting. Each move that her parallel self makes could create a completely different reality the next day. You literally cannot guess where the future is going. You literally cannot predict how the story is going to go and that is incredibly addicting.

I want Abby to be with this guy, but parallel Abby is with another guy and I love him too, and Abby misses cross country and acting but parallel Abby has become part of a crew team and its just crazy. You’re so torn between these two characters, and they are the same person. You want them to work toward the same goal and its not happening. Its so frustrating and I thought about closing the book, and finishing it the next day. But I could not stop it. I had to keep reading.

And the ending! It was beautiful and crazy and I wanted to throw the book across the room and I tweeted that to Lauren because I couldn’t believe she could end the book that way, and then she tweeted me, made me feel better about it. Now that I’ve thought about what Lauren said, and reread the last chapter, I am very happy with the ending. Its one of those ones that are utterly frustrating but absolutely beautiful at the same time. It reminded me of the sort of ending that Gayle Forman’s Just One Year. Hopeful, sad, cliffhanger, but so many good things. You come crashing to the end and you hope for more but I love that she leaves me waiting. I will always sort of wonder what is going to happen next and I love that.

Its a nice blend of science fiction (which makes my head spin at times) and contemporary. Its a story about trying to figure out what you want in your life, and how sometimes life just unfolds the way its supposed to and sometimes even the best plans don’t work. Abby has her Plan and it doesn’t go as planned, and she gets a second chance to see another way it could and I love that at the end, she knows she’s going the right way and that she’ll end up where she’s supposed to. I love it. Great job once again, Lauren, for making my head spin and leaving me wanting more once again. New book soon?

My Review:

I was really excited when I received Free to Fall for review. I had heard good things about Lauren Miller from her novel “Parallel” and she was going to be a guest author at the Ontario Teen Book Fest so I was high in anticipation when reading this book. I was roughly half way through the book when I met Lauren, and she was so smart and so fun to talk to that I went home almost immediately to finish it.

I think what really gets me about all of this is that it felt so real to me. While Lauren’s novel takes place in the future, its not that far into the future and it is almost sort of warning of what is to come. Lux, the app that everyone uses on their phone, is like Siri on crack. I have Siri on my own phone but I must admit, I barely use it. Lux literally determines every movement of your day. It speaks in your own voices, tells you which bus to take when, what path is the wrong one, what coffee drink you should order, everything. It literally decides everything for you, and everyone trusts it blindly. I am getting shivers just thinking about it. For me, it felt so incredibly real.

I love that it was more than that though. The story could have been shallow, just a commentary on technology but it was so much more than that. Without going into too many spoilers, the more that we learn about Lux and the company behind it, the more that I felt the need to keep turning the pages. The mystery behind that and the mystery behind Rory herself was addicting. First, we’re on a roller coaster, trying to figure Rory out, and the next, we’re in the passenger seat while she unwinds the mystery of Lux. Its completely thrilling and terrifying. Everything that happens in this book seems so real, and terrifying and that’s what makes this SO good.

I also highly applaud Lauren Miller for accomplishing such a story in one novel. I honestly wish that other authors, myself, included could do that more often. It takes a lot to accomplish building up a story, and wrapping it up, in one book, especially in the sort of complicated story that she writes. Plus it makes it so much easier to move on to my ever growing list of books to read without having to worry about a sequel! I loved that! I think it takes a lot of talent to tell a complete story like in such a quick and perfect way.

Leigh Bardugo’s Ruin and Rising Launch Party at The Last Bookstore!

I’m just going to start off by saying this: Leigh Bardugo and her friends really know how to throw a party. A launch party that is.

The first “real” launch party that I ever attended was Leigh’s last year for the middle book of the Grisha trilogy series, treat Siege and Storm. It was a total blast so when Leigh told me about her party back at the Festival of Books, ambulance I knew that this was something that I could not miss.

I met up with my friends Sylvia and Alex, and we ate some delicious pizza and Slurpees that were literally perfect for the moment. We then drove to pick up my friend Cassandra and made our way to The Last Bookstore.

If you’ve never been to The Last Bookstore in LA before, its an incredible place to go. There are books everywhere, and rooms that are like mazes, and tunnels and really cool doors and its just beautiful. Its one of the most beautiful bookstores I’ve ever seen. Leigh could not have picked a better place to launch her final novel in the Grisha trilogy.

There was lots of food to eat, and drinks too called “The Ruin” and “The Rising.” They were delicious, both the non-alcoholic ones and the ones with a kick ;)

The decorations were SUPER awesome. The entire bookstore was transformed to celebrate the series, and I just wanted to take pictures of everything.

Leigh was introduced, in such a lovely way, and talked to us for a bit. She never fails to both make me laugh and inspire me. She read a bit from a diary that she had when she was about ten years old, and it was SO funny. Then she went through the basic plot line of Labyrinth. Yes, the David Bowie Labyrinth. It was, and has remained, a favorite movie of hers and she talks about why that is. We reach this pivotal moment of the film, where it goes from being a children’s movie to something a bit more, and she believes that it is YA. She talks passionately about YA, about reading it and writing it, and it was just plain beautiful. Leigh is incredibly inspiring.

She also read a very small bit of the beginning of Ruin and Rising, and then we all were dismissed for food, drinks and fun…oh and signing too.

My friends and I immediately departed for the photobooth. I had a TON of fun with it last year, and I was eager to get back into it again, with some of my most awesome friends :)

I also had the guts to get into the booth by myself this time. I SO would not have done that a year ago!

They also had a manicure station as well, but I’m a compulsive nail biter and I tend to stay away from that haha.

We finally decided to get in line to meet Leigh and it was a great time, as always. We talked a bit, and I told her I would see her in Vegas next week for the Fierce Reads stop and she signed my copy of Ruin and Rising. We also got lots of swag, which is always good. I love getting my hands on more bags, and bookmarks and pins.

And I got my special launch party edition sticker too, which my Siege and Storm has, and was MUCH needed for my Ruin and Rising.

As we were saying goodbye to everyone, and leaving the venue, there were two guys manning the front security desk. We had asked them early if there was a way to get our hands on the giant posters, the ones that I posted earlier, that had the first pages of each novel of Grisha trilogy. We were told that we couldn’t have them, because they were needed the next day at Leigh’s event down in San Diego. I know I was disappointed but it was okay. As we were leaving though, the two guys flagged us down and handed the posters over, making us SO incredibly happy. We ran back into the bookstore and made sure to get these posters signed by Leigh!

All in all, it was a great night, full of a TON of fun, especially the book kind, which is my favorite :) It is always a blast hanging out with my friends and meet new ones, and to see Leigh Bardugo again. She’s brilliant, hilarious and inspiring.

I definitely can’t wait for more launch parties for Leigh in the future!

Oh! I also got to talk to Leigh’s mom again, who remembered me from the last launch party, and a picture was totally necessary. I even put them back to back so you could see. What a sweetheart and so proud of her daughter. I love it!

Tuesday Top Ten-Reasons I Love Being a Blogger

I’ve been thinking a lot about being a blogger later. I’ve been doing it for over two years now, viagra buy which is kind of baffling to me. I know people who’ve been doing it for so much longer than me but two years is nothing to sneeze at. I’m quite proud of myself too. Its been a lot of hard work but I love it.

But I truly have been thinking about it quite a lot lately. Reaching my two year anniversary was huge, shop and I had a mondo giveaway for it. Yes, I realize mondo is not a word, but for the sake of this post, let’s just pretend that it is. I’ve also gotten recognized a bit in public, and by public, I mean, when I’m at bookish or nerdish events. That’s been kind of fun. I’ve had people talking about my blog to others, which, again, kind of fun and kind of crazy.

I’ve also really started to spread myself out. I have friends everywhere I go. Its kind of insane but I am loving it so much. I’m meeting people at book signings and festivals and premieres and concerts, and I’m meeting people online and I’m meeting booksellers and authors and other bloggers and its just been intense and awesome. Last night, I was at Leigh Bardugo’s release party for Ruin and Rising (more on that at a later post, of course), and I had several people coming up to talk to me. Bloggers. Readers. Librarians. Authors. It was an incredible feeling and it reminded me how much I love doing this and how much I love being in this world.

So this week’s top ten is talking about WHY I love being a blogger. Enjoy :)

Technically there aren’t ten reasons. I know what you’re thinking. If you love blogging so much, aren’t there a million reasons. Well, yes and no. The fact is, there are a million reasons why I love being a blogger and why I love my blog but it all kind of boils down to these reasons.

9. Promoting my Novel

I mean, come on, this is something that I honestly didn’t think about it until fairly recently BUT its something that I think is going to work out for me in the long run. I’ve spent and continue to spend a lot of time on this blog. I don’t have a massive following but there’s a good amount of you out there, and I think that’s awesome. And the few of you that are there, are REALLY great fans. You guys rock, and I love talking to you. I honestly think that a good amount of you will follow me into my writing career and that’s awesome. There are a lot of you that have expressed a ton of interest in reading The Awakened so that makes me incredibly happy. I think my blog has gotten me on a great start to hopefully making my novel be successful in the future.

8. Discovering New Fandoms

When I first started blogging, I had a small group of fandoms, but I was very passionate about them. In the past two years of blogging, my fandoms have exploded. I was a TMI fan, and a Star Wars and Harry Potter and Doctor Who and many many others but I’ve discovered Legend and Jessica Brody’s books and Leigh Bardugo and Andrew Smith, and just the whole wide world of YA that I hadn’t even begun to discover yet. Every day, I’m discovering new authors, new books, new shows, new movies and that is awesome. I review a book, and it leads me to another book, which leads to me to another book. My life is a never-ending life of discovery.

7. Building up My Reputation and Earning Recognition

This is kind of the lowest one because…well its sort of unintended thing that happened. I had very different reasons for my blog when I first started it, so what happened with it actually worked out even better for me. But I love being a blogger because I love what it creates for me. It establishes me as a book lover and it establishes me as a person that works hard, and cares about the world of books and reading and writing and I love that. I love that, not only do I have the fans of readers, but I have teachers and librarians and authors and other bloggers that know me and respect me, and seek me out for things and that really means a lot to me. I may not get paid for being a blogger, but this…this is a huge reason and a huge paycheck for me. I love the way I feel when people recognize the hard work I put in and they respect me for that, and they support me.

6. The Perks!

Okay, I’d be lying if I said the perks weren’t a reason I love being a blogger. When I get a book in the mail, or get approved for an e-galley online, or when I’m granted press access, or that sort of thing…it feels good. Because those sorts of things, they don’t come easy. I didn’t start my blog to get free books, honestly. And those who do start blogs to get free stuff, and press access, etc,…you can tell and they end up not achieving those goals because they seem very lacking. So working my butt off for two years, and being able to earn these sorts of things is pretty awesome. I do enjoy that.

5. Writing About My Passions

This is literally the REASON I started What a Nerd Girl Says. I was tired of talking everyone’s ears off about books that I love to read and that sort of thing and them being bored of their mind. I wanted a place that I could come to and talk about all these things that are so awesome to me. I was also taking children’s literature at the time and we did a small unit on YA, which made me feel…a lot of things actually. I had the desire to talk about it all the time and I also felt some validity in reading it, as an adult at 24 years old. So I started the blog. And I love that I can log onto this site and literally write about whatever I want, whenever I want. I love that. I can talk books every single day, I can write about movies and TV shows, and I can write my reactions and I can fangirl like crazy and I can share my opinions. I honestly think that’s just the best reason to start my blog and its a huge reason why I continue to do so.

4. The Events

I love all the amazing things that I get to do. Honestly, its not like I have to do them or I’m invited to do them. I just do them. I did some book events before I had a blog but I really didn’t get involved until I had a blog. I didn’t realize how much was possible. I didn’t realize all the books that were out there, or the authors. I didn’t realize you could go to launch events for books, or go to movie premieres and meet and greets. I’ve gotten so hugely involved with all that, because of my blog. I’ve met SO many authors, and I’ve been to movie premieres and meet and greets and I’ve been to epic concerts and I’m attending my first ALA conference, and I’ve been to book festivals and its awesome. People are constantly, like, “Sara, you’re ALWAYS there” when it comes to events and they’re right. Usually. I got involved and I love it, I love every moment that I get to meet an author, or attend a premiere or something like that. I absolutely love it.

3. Becoming Friends with Authors

This is something, again, that’s sort of randomly, magically happened and I absolutely love it. I want to be an author. Its like…when you’re a little kid and you want to be a firefighter when you grow up and you get to see one, and they talk to you, and its like…its like talking to Superman. Its like, they’re the biggest person you’ve ever seen. That’s the way I feel with authors. I want to be one, and I’m coming closer and closer to becoming one. So the fact that authors know me, and are becoming my…friends, for lack of a better word…it makes me incredibly happy. I love saying hi to them at events. Ava Dellaira, Jennifer Bosworth, Gretchen McNeil…they all said hi to me last night, gave me hugs and it makes me feel awesome. It’s total hero worship! I love that my blog constantly brings me in contact with the people that I am inspired by.

2. The Community

The people that are involved in this community that I’ve immersed myself in. Disregarding a few rare cases, I’ve found that this community is incredible. Everyone is so supportive of each other. Librarians and authors and booksellers and bloggers and fans, they all work together, and (for the most part), there is no competition and I love that! There’s always this moment, where you think, I need to know something or I have a question, or something of that nature and I can immediately think of someone in my community, whether in real life or online, that can assist me. I think its great that I can meet other bloggers in real life and we automatically are fast friends, and we’re exchanging ideas. I love that there’s this whole little inside world of people that all love the same sorts of things as me.

1. Meeting New Friends

Which brings me to my very last and very important reason that I love being a blogger and running this blog. I go to these events and make friends online and I have this incredible community and all of this, and it brings me to some of the best people ever. I have met some of the COOLEST people, that I can’t imagine being without…and in only the last two years. I’ve met amazing friends, people that I literally talk to every single day. These are the first people I want to text when reading a new book, or when I find out about a cool event. We laugh together and wait in lines for hours together, and its been amazing to find these friends. Without my blog, I wouldn’t have these people in my life and that would be a very sad thing to me, and I’m grateful for my blog, because it brought me to every single one of them.

The Darling Buds at Gibson 90210-Recap and LIVE Video!

So, website like this you know, viagra order seeing Jamie Campbell Bower, Tristan Marmont, Dan Smith and Roland Johnson aka The Darling Buds just once in a week was just…just not enough for me. I was lucky enough to see the band play a 21+ sold out show at The Hotel Cafe on Monday, which was SUPER awesome. It was seriously…it was so awesome. Because the show on Monday was at a 21+ venue, there was another show on Thursday night, all ages, free, first come, first serve for the first 100 people. At first, I wasn’t going to go because, well, fangirls get kind of poor and I had already seen Jamie play at the Venice Boardwalk and I had just seen the full band play at the Hotel Cafe on Monday.

But then my awesome friend Stephanie convinced me to go, and offered to come pick me up (which is just…beyond awesome, since it was out of her way), and you know what? I am SO glad I did it! Because I needed to be a spoiled girl and see them again. Of course.

LOL

So me, Stephanie, my friend Cassandra and Sylvia (from Fangirl Feeels) all piled in a car together and made our way to Beverly Hills to the Gibson Showroom to try and get into this free show. We arrived at about one pm and were pretty stoked to see that there were only about 10 people in line. We immediately got in line and spent the next six hours, hanging out, drinking a bit, and playing games…oh and eating Chipotle. You know, the usual fangirl life.

When we got into the venue, we immediately snagged a good spot, and once the band started playing, we really realized how GREAT of a spot we got! Check out the video I took. I got two full songs, “Freak Like Me” and “Waiting”. I took a few 15-second videos of other songs like “Better Man” and “Dragons are Real, You Have to Believe Me”, and you can see those all on my instagram page.

The BEST part was that I was recording “Freak Like Me” because I LOVE that song, and I didn’t get it on Monday, and Jamie came up to me, Sylvia, Stephanie, Cassandra and our friend, Jackie, and started singing with us. That made my whole night. I literally keep watching that part of the video, over and over and over again. SUCH a great experience.

The Darling Buds rocked it, hard, and it was just as awesome of a performance as Monday, maybe even better. You could tell they were a bit nervous on Monday, maybe because it was a sold out show and there was pressure or whatnot. Tonight, they looked so laid back and they were having fun and it was SO great.

After the show was over, we started making our way out, when I spotted Roland. I took pictures with all the guys on Monday night but I didn’t think for a moment to get autographs because, well, I just didn’t think of it. So I flagged Roland down, got his signature and got another beautiful selfie with him!

So beautiful.

We made our way outside and just sort of hung out. We were kind of “kicked out” nicely out of the venue so we didn’t think that they would come out, but I’m not one to give up so easily so I convinced my friends to stay a little bit longer.

Luckily, the band DID come out, though they weren’t able to stay for long. They took one massive group picture with those who stayed. It was taken with an awesome girl named Abby’s camera and it’ll hopefully go up on Twitter tomorrow and I can share it because I’m legit right in the front, right behind Jamie and I’m like YAY!

As soon as they took the group picture, they lingered for a few minutes and I was able to get Jamie, Dan and Tristan’s signatures too, which made me SO happy, and was basically the perfect ending to a perfect Darling Buds week.

I’m hopefully going to try and print out the pictures I took with the boys and put them on this poster, because that would be AWESOME.

All in all, what a GREAT week and I absolutely loved seeing The Darling Buds twice. I hope they put out an album soon because I love their songs and I hope they come back to California soon.
