Exclusive Interview with Fantasy Author, Brandon Sanderson!

A few weeks ago, buy information pills I was contemplating the book releases of the week and I decided, check let’s just get them all. One of them was Brandon Sanderson’s Steelheart. When I got the book, sick I did a little research on Brandon and found out that he is the author of many, many books and I’m embarrassed to admit that it took some time for me to discover this.

BrandonGray

I read Steelheart and I absolutely loved it. It blew my mind, because it was such a new concept. Superheroes who use their abilities to gain power, and use it against those who don’t have powers. Its incredible. I’m excited to dive into his other novels, which have more of a fantasy feel than this book does. But we all know that’s a good thing for me.

Brandon is most notable for his Mistborn series, but also has about a dozen other fantasy books just ready for my perusal.

I am honored and SO excited to share this interview with you! Brandon was just around the country for his book tour, promoting Steelheart, and I’m so grateful he took the time out of his busy schedule to sit down and talk about books and writing, and all of that with us.

So enjoy!

Sara: What can you tell us about your new book and what can we expect from it?

Brandon: Steelheart may not be what you expect to see from me because I’ve primarily released epic fantasy so far. As a writer, one of my main goals is to always be trying new things to advance my writing skill and to make sure that you have a varied experience reading my books. If you’ve enjoyed my books, particularly ones likeMistborn, and you pick up this, you’ll find lots of things to love. But you’ll also find some new things. Steelheart is an action-adventure thrill ride. I wrote it to be exciting, fast-paced, and fun. It is my experiment with dabbling more in science fiction than fantasy, and dealing with some of the current tropes in action movies, particularly some of the superhero tropes. In the end, however, it is very much a Brandon Sanderson novel.

The hardest part about doing a sequel is this: yes, it’s new, but it’s also familiar, and there’s a part of me that says, “I don’t want to do that. I want to do something completely different.” However, it’s important to have the discipline to say, “No, you promised your readers that you were going to finish this!” Beyond that, there are certain themes, characters, and stories that you can only explore by doing something that’s more long-form, like a series. As a reader, I prefer to read series, but as a writer sometimes it’s hard to make myself do the familiar instead of something brand-new.

Sara: What book is easier to write: the first book, or the second book? Why?

Brandon: Here’s something about the way I work. New projects excite me. In fact, I’m often dangling the new project in front of myself as an incentive to finish my current project, saying, “When you get this book done, and it’s done right and it’s awesome, you get to go do something new.” It’s part of what I like about my job, always being able to do something new. It keeps me productive as a writer.

Sara: What advice do you give to aspiring novelists?

Brandon: Practice. Don’t worry about anything other than finding time to write–then spend that time on your stories. Publishing shouldn’t worry you; nothing should. Just practice.

Sara: Where does your inspiration come from?

Brandon: Any given book for me has more than one inception point, which makes it hard for me to discuss where the ideas come from. Books come from a lot of cool ideas bouncing around in my head until some of them stick together.

Sara: Did you always want to be a writer, or did you have other career aspirations?

Brandon: No, I haven’t always wanted to write. Unlike a lot of writers, I was not born as a novelist, and I wasn’t writing as a kid. I actually didn’t like books until I was a teenager. My eighth grade teacher, Mrs. Reader, gave me a fantasy novel, and it was in fantasy novels in which I discovered myself and came to love the idea of storytelling. That’s when I decided I wanted to be a writer. I was fifteen, but I had no idea how to write. I just jumped into it and started practicing. I think that’s the best way for someone to become a writer–you’re a writer if you write. If you sit down and say, “I’m going to be a writer!” and you start writing, working on your fiction, you’re a writer! If you want to break into publishing, the best thing to do is to practice your craft.

Sara: What are some of your favorite activities outside of writing?

Brandon: Most of my free time right now is consumed by playing with my three little boys, ages five, three, and less than a year. They are a handful, but also a delight. When I have a spare moment, my nerd obsession is the card game Magic: The Gathering.

Sara: What are some books, or who are some authors, that you enjoy reading?

Brandon: Terry Pratchett is brilliant, and I buy everything that he writes. If you haven’t read him, you really need to do yourself a favor and pick him up. I also have to mention Guy Gavriel Kay. He’s one of the great writers of the genre, and he’s amazing. His writing is beautiful, interesting, fun, and exciting, but also lyrical.

Sara: Bonus question, I ask all of my interviewees: who is your fictional crushes?

Brandon: Wow. Probably I would have to go back to being a high schooler, which is the last time I would feel that the word “crush” applied to what I felt, and I would say Sioned from Melanie Rawn’s Dragon Prince. I was totally into that woman. She was awesome.

Tuesday Top Ten-Scenes I Hope to See in Catching Fire!

So this week, visit I’m kind of on a one track mind. I’ve got Jennifer Lawrence, story Josh Hutcherson, approved Liam Hemsworth, some districts, and an epic rebellion on the brain.

Next week, the highly awaited sequel to The Hunger Games, Catching Fire will be releasing in theaters. However, this coming weekend, I will be attending the red carpet premiere, and participating in my FIRST EVER fan camp. I am so excited about it, and I literally am having so much trouble thinking of anything else.

So this week’s Tuesday Top Ten is counting down the ten things I hope to see in the Catching Fire movie!

I warn you: if you haven’t read Catching Fire, I will ruin the book for you. So please do not read this if you don’t want it spoiled for you!

10. The Victory Tour

One of my favorite parts of Catching Fire is the Victory Tour, and I think that’s because it really opens up the world that Suzanne has created. In the first book, we get District 12, a small portion of the Capitol and then the Arena. In this, we are able to see the vastness of the country of Panem, and the problems that is going on. I like the Victory Tour because Katniss and Peeta start to see so much more than District 12, and the Games. Its where the idea for a rebellion begins. I really want to see this in the movie because I want to see all the districts! Especially District 4!

9. Katniss and Haymitch Drinking

The moment when Katniss and Haymitch realize that she and Peeta will be going back into the arena is such a pivotal moment for the two of them. Its when Katniss finally understands Haymitch, and why he’s so drawn to drinking, and its why she drinks herself in that moment. She had been given a little bit of hope, by surviving, before the hopelessness sets in again. The moment that Haymitch and Katniss decide to make sure Peeta lives…its a beautiful moment. Its when they, and the readers, really realize how much better Peeta is than most people.

8. Jabberjays and the Tick Tock Arena

The Arena of the Games in Hunger Games is insanely enough, with flying fireballs and tracker jackers, and mutts that are made to look like fallen tributes, and so much more. But this one…it blows me away at how intricate and how seriously messed up it is. Its a clock, and each hour of the clock is a totally new horror. There’s the poisonous fog, and the bloodthirsty monkeys, but the one thing that killed me during the Games is the jabberjays. The fact they can match the exact tone of voice of someone and can make the tributes think they’re hearing their loved ones be tortured? Its pure evil. It doesn’t literally kill them, but it kills them emotionally. I can’t wait to see the Games in this movie.

7. Gale Being Whipped

Okay, I know that sounds super messed up but hear me out. Suzanne has Gale whipped for a number of reasons. It shows Katniss the feelings that she has for Gale, feelings that she is going to need to work out. It shows the levels of cruelty that exist in Panem. It shows that standing up and fighting, not running away, is the answer. So I had hoped that they would not take this scene out because of the violence of it. There’s a reason this scene is there, and I think its pivotal to the story and extremely pivotal to the character development of Katniss. I’ve seen enough previews and TV spots to know that it’ll be in the movie, and I know that despite my desire to have it in the movie, I will definitely be upset when I see it.

6. Victors Holding Hands

I think this is just an unbelievably beautiful scene in the book. Twenty-four people from twelve different districts that are going to be pit against each other to the death come together and band together for one moment, and show the injustice of the government. They may not have remained that way in the Games, but for a brief moment, they were united. I can’t have been the only one that was moved by that scene.

5. Peeta Proposing to Katniss

I know its not real, because they have to do that in order to protect each other, and the people they love, but come on, I have shipped Katniss and Peeta since the beginning, and I’m sure that its going to be a squeal worthy scene anyway. We know Peeta. We know how caring and loving and sincere he is, and how much he truly does love Katniss. I can imagine, even in a fake proposal (real proposal?), he expresses all of that so eloquently and I can’t wait to see it.

4. Katniss Being “Pregnant”

I hope, I hope, I hope this doesn’t get kicked out of the movie. I hope it made it in. I think its so important. I think it has so many purposes. First off, it just shows how incredibly clever Peeta is. He knows exactly how to garner attention and cause mayhem. He’s brilliant. By telling everyone that Katniss is pregnant, right before the Games, he is stirring something in all the people around the country who love her. If they didn’t already feel the injustice of seeing the victors they love going in to the arena, they are feeling the injustice now. I also think it shows how much Peeta is willing to do for Katniss, to keep her safe, to save her life and protect her. And separately, by letting Katniss go in, while carrying a child (though we know she isn’t actually), the Capitol and President Snow show their cruelty but not even sparing an unborn child. This better be in the movie!

3. Katniss and Peeta on the beach

Okay, this is totally the sexy scene of the book, but its more than that too. Its the moment that Peeta tries to convince Katniss not to save him, to save herself, because she has Gale and her mother and Prim to go home to. He tells her that no one will miss him, the way people will miss her. Its the moment when Katniss really realizes how much Peeta means to her, and that she’s the only one who will be completely affected by Peeta’s death. She’s confused; she has feelings for both Peeta and Gale, but I think this is the first moment that she really realizes her feelings for Peeta. The intimacy they share in that moment is so real, and raw, and not just because of their feelings for each other, but because of the hopeless situation they are in. I know this scene will be in there, because we will riot as fans if they aren’t.

2. Wedding Dress Into a Mockingjay Outfit

I think this is really the first moment that the idea of rebellion is more than just a spark. There are uprisings in some of the districts, and there’s unrest now that the Capitol is forcing former victors to compete in the Hunger Games. But Katniss is a hero to the districts, a person who beat the Capitol at their own game. I think everyone just sort of waits to see what she’ll do, to follow her lead, and by transforming from a young girl, in her wedding dress, to a powerful and beautiful mockingjay, she creates a visceral reaction. Its a very powerful moment, and thats a pivotal point for President Snow. Katniss has to die in the Games. This is also a moment that leads to a very important, very heartbreaking death.

1. Finnick Odair

Finnick Odair is my absolute favorite character in the entire series, and for so many reasons. Everyone has the image of him as the good-looking heartbreaker from District 4, because he’s a great fighter, a compassionate person and in love with the most unlikely of people, a girl gone crazy from her own trip into the games. He is incredibly charming and sexy, and he has the blond, surfer boy thing going on that I can’t help but love but he’s also an incredibly complex person too. I can’t wait to see him fight with his tridents, carry Mags on his back, save Peeta’s life, and just be the amazing Finnick that he is. I think Sam Claflin will do a great job!

*      *      *       *       *

I hope you enjoyed this week’s Tuesday Top Ten. I can’t wait to see the movie, and I’m sure most of you can’t wait either!

What are some of the scenes from the book that you hope makes it into the movie? Share in the comments!

NaNoWriMo-Character Interviews

Hello Writers and Readers! Happy Monday!

I hope you’re all having a good week, viagra 100mg immersed in the world of reading and writing, for sale and enjoying the fun of being a part of a nerd world.

I’m working hard on my novel, pounding out as many words as I can. I’m a little over 30K right now, which leaves me at about 15K-ish for the month. It also has a title now too! It is called The Reawakened, and I’m so excited about my awesome title, that I’m just dying to wake up every day and write!

In today’s NaNoWriMo, we are going to learn a little more about my characters, Katy and Ash. You can read about the basic 411 of them, and the other characters in my novel, in this post here.

For now, let’s dive into the character interviews. I had never done this before, until my good friend, Hayley, from Geek and Book Nerd, asked me to do one to help her in her school assignment. I realized how much help it was, to sort of break down my character. I surprised myself in interviewing Katy then and now I’m hoping to learn about her and Ash in these interviews.

I hope you enjoy!

Katy Valentine Interview

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Katy Valentine. I’m 18 years, living in Manhattan, NY, and attending St. Joseph’s Prep as a high school senior. I live with my dad, who is a New York City cop, and spend two holidays a year with my mother in a small town called Constance in Nebraska.

What makes you happy?

Reading. Escaping into a world that is so unlike our own, even the world that now exists, with the reawakened running over the world. I used to spend a lot of days immersed in science fiction and fantasy books and movies and TV shows. I also love to dance.

What makes you afraid?

Before the virus and the reawakened, I would have said, I fear losing myself, of trusting someone as much as my dad trusted my mom. Now I fear for my life, and I fear for the lives of those who I’m trying to survive with.

What are you hopes and dreams?

I hope to survive. I hope that there will be a time when I can pick up a book and read it and enjoy it again. I want to be able to go dancing again, and I want to be able to go to a baseball game. I want to get married and have kids and go back to school. My dream would be that things would go back to normal. I wish the reawakened would go away.

What is the plan? With the reawakened?

To survive? I don’t know. It seems like everyone has  plan, and a different plan at that. Some people say the plan is to just survive. Some people say there’s a place to escape to, where you’re supposed to safe. I don’t know. My immediate plan is to NOT shoot Ash in the face.

Who is Ash?

Ash is my next door neighbor. Well, he was my next door neighbor. He’s kind of the bane of my existence. He drives me insane, which is kind of hard to deal with because he’s also kind of ridiculously good looking and its intimidating. He is pretty much impossible to take seriously because he’s always making jokes.

Do you like Ash?

Nate is a complicated person. The guy is ridiculously good looking, and he makes me laugh. My best friend Madison would say that I’m in love with him, but the guy is infuriating. Cocky, can’t take anything seriously, and has been driving me insane since we were five years old.

I’m sending some denial. Are you sure you don’t like Ash Matthews?

Okay, let’s be clear on something: everyone likes Ash Matthews. How can you not like Ash Matthews? The guy is smoking hot. Do you know how many dark haired guys there are with blue eyes that pale? Or ones that have flat stomachs, and impressive arms? Yeah, I didn’t think so. But he’s Ash! He can’t take anything seriously, everything is a joke to him. He eats all the rations, and he’s always touching me.

I’m really thinking that there is a lot of denial with you.

Can we maybe talk about something else?

What do you think your strengths and weaknesses are?

I’m stubborn and determined, which really could go either way, as a strength or a weakness. I know how to fight, due to years of my dad paying for kickboxing and karate and self-defense classes. I’m fast, I think I can run really fast. But I’m terrible with a gun, despite hundreds of dollars for lessons.

What are some things you miss about the world before?

New York pizza. My dog Bandit. Going to a Mets game.

Ash Matthews Interview

Ash’s interview is shorter, because the story is all in Katy’s point of view and anything Ash says will be too revealing to the story.

Tell us about yourself.

I’m Ash Matthews. I’m eighteen years old, and I am a senior at St. Joseph’s Prep. I’ve lived in Manhattan since I was nine years old, and before that, I lived in Boston, with my parents, who are lawyers. I play both football and baseball at the school, captain for both. I’m a quarterback and a pitcher.

What makes you happy?

Playing sports, watching sports. Making a play that makes people cheer because it makes me feel good. And I like seeing Katy. I like hanging out with my friends. I love making people laugh.

What makes you afraid?

Not being important. I don’t like the idea of being insignificant. Sometimes I don’t know what the point of being here is if you aren’t doing something important. That’s hard to deal with right now because all I’m trying to do is survive. My life is important and I’m glad I’m surviving but I wish there was more to it.

What are your hopes and dreams?

I wanted to make something of my athletic ability. It probably sounds stupid but I had hoped I could get a scholarship for football or baseball and continue playing sports. Sports seem so insignificant now but it was what I was good at. Now I just want to get to a place where I feel safe, and where the people that I love feel safe.

What do you think of Katy?

Katy is an amazing person, and I don’t think she sees that sometimes. She’s strong, and stubborn as hell, but she’s resilient. If there is any person in this world that I’d have to have by my side, its definitely her.

What do you miss about the world before the reawakened?

I miss my friends, and I miss the laughter and the humor that used to exist. Every time any one laughs now, its like…it feels wrong. It doesn’t feel right with the way the world has been. I miss being happy and making people laugh.

*      *      *      *      *      *

I hope you all enjoyed reading and learning more about Katy and Ash! They are becoming so important to me, and I can’t wait til you can learn more about the both of them in the actual novel.

Check back later this week for more posts on NaNoWriMo, including advice on tackling writer’s block and maybe, if you’re lucky, I’ll post a very small excerpt to The Reawakened!

Happy Writing everyone!

GoodReads Summary:

In this sequel to the bestselling fantasy thriller, Angelfall, the survivors of the angel apocalypse begin to scrape back together what’s left of the modern world.

When a group of people capture Penryn’s sister Paige, thinking she’s a monster, the situation ends in a massacre. Paige disappears. Humans are terrified. Mom is heartbroken.

Penryn drives through the streets of San Francisco looking for Paige. Why are the streets so empty? Where is everybody? Her search leads her into the heart of the angels’ secret plans where she catches a glimpse of their motivations, and learns the horrifying extent to which the angels are willing to go.

Meanwhile, Raffe hunts for his wings. Without them, he can’t rejoin the angels, can’t take his rightful place as one of their leaders. When faced with recapturing his wings or helping Penryn survive, which will he choose?

My Review:

Please keep in mind that while this review will be completely spoiler free for World After, keep in mind that there WILL be spoilers for Angelfall. To read my review of Angelfall, please click here, or click here for Kat’s review!

Angelfall leaves us off with a lot of unanswered questions, so getting my hands on an early copy of World After, to hopefully get some answers to those questions, was SO exciting. Thank you so much to Susan Ee and her publicity team for extending me the courtesy of an early copy. It is the actual print, not an ARC so I was very excited to dive in.

Susan Ee creates such a complex world, inside a world that seems familiar to us. It takes place in the Northern California area, in San Francisco, where I have been before. When Penryn talks about the area, I’ll recognize places. But the world is turned upside, and there are vengeful, violent angels everywhere.

It is such a unique and new idea to the YA genre. We see such a different twist to the idea of fallen angels. While we do have a close encounter with a particular angel, Raffe, and we do find ourselves reluctantly attracted to him, much the same as Penryn, most other angels we meet, we meet them with fear and apprehension. From the beginning, they are a vicious race, that came down to earth for reasons unknown and wreaked havoc on the world. I applaud Susan immensely for this. It’s hard to present new ideas in the ever growing spectrum of YA lit, and she has definitely done this. And just when you think she cannot possibly introduce anything more, she does.

We leave the end of Angelfall in so many different ways: Penryn is paralyzed, stuck in her body while everyone around her thinks she’s dead. Her sister, Paige, has been experimented on, modified into something unrecognizable. Raffe is still missing his own angel wings, and has bat-like, terrifying demon wings instead. The human resistance is faltering against the powerful angels.

The story that continues in this novel continues the drama, and the utter mystery that is the angels. Penryn gets herself into this situations in order to find out answers and to protect her mother and sister, and as soon as she feels like she gets answers to one question, it opens up the door to about five more. Susan builds a great story that way. She has a way of giving the readers a little of what they want but dangling so much more.

One thing that I had an issue with it was that there seemed to be a lot of build up, to a ton of action and then the end, leaving us waiting for the third book, which presumably will be full of a ton of action. I kept waiting for something to HAPPEN. I think that was the point though, to build up the tension and the questions that we need to keep us interested in reading that third book.

I really love the continuation of Penryn as a character though. She’s strong and stubborn and determined to get where she needs to go, to find her sister or her mother or to find safety and all of that. But she also has weaknesses, she has reluctances and worries and fears, which makes her so real and familiar. Even while she’s fighting, you can feel her fear or panic and it makes her feel so much closer to you. A character like that, who can portray both strengths and weaknesses, are my favorite. They have all the best of us, and they can have the bad things of us as well, and that’s what makes them a hero. We see them struggle before they win, and that’s exactly what Penryn is.

For fans of the first book, you will definitely NOT be disappointed by this book. Susan takes us deeper into the world she has created, answering burning questions while unfolding even more at the same time. She creates beautiful moments, moments full of action and the chemistry between Penryn and Raffe is just too hard to deny. There is so much coming in these books and I know I can’t wait to see it how it unfolds!

Bookish Survey: Cast a Harry Potter Spell

So one of my new blogger friends, pill Kayla from The Thousand Lives (who I met a couple weeks ago, visit this and who Im happy to report, help is SO awesome), just posted this on her blog, and she got it from Flip that Page. I read it and thought it was the coolest thing ever.

I mean, mixing up Harry Potter spells with books? I call that an epic win.

So let’s dive in!

Cast a Spell!

Reparo

fixes damaged objects

A book that needs some serious fixing: Requiem by Lauren Oliver. The series started off pretty good; it had an interesting concept but it just fell so flat as it went along.

Lumos

creates a narrow beam of light

A book that deserves more attention: The Demon King by Cinda Williams Chima. Now here is a lady that just SO rocks the YA fantasy genre and doesn’t get enough credit for it.

Nox

counters the effects of Lumos

An overhyped book: Catcher in the Rye. I do not understand the appeal of this book. I do not understand why its so highly acclaimed and why people just love it. I do not understand why people name their kid after Holden Caufield. He’s annoying as all heck, and he spends the entire novel whining up a storm.

Accio

summons an object from a significant distance

A book you’re anticipating: So many. But my answer at the moment would be Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith. The guy is a genius. I am so happy I discovered him and his amazing writing this year.

Alohomora

opens unlocked doors, unless bewitched

A book you want to be more open about: I don’t know. I’m a book blogger. I don’t really have a problem talking openly about books. I have no probably saying if i love or hate a book.

Expecto Patronum

conjures an incarnation of positive feelings

A book that made you cry, or at least want to: There are just too many for me to even begin to say. I’ve cried over a lot of books. I sobbed at Clockwork Princess, and Allegiant, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and way more than that.

Morsmordre

conjures the Dark Mark

A book you wish to mark as one of your favorites: Either Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by JK Rowling or Trickster’s Choice by Tamora Pierce

Petrificus Totalus

petrifies victim

A book you wish to keep forever: Harry Potter. What other books do I really need.

Protego

shield charm

An intimidating book you keep putting off: The entire Song of Ice and Fire series. I’ve read the first 1.5 books but I haven’t continued because of the sheer magnitude of them.

Riddikulus

used against a boggart

A book with a deceiving synopsis: I can’t think of anything in particular BUT I hate when I pick up a book and it has SUCH a vague synopsis that you literally have NO Idea what its about. OH god, that’s so annoying. Like, you don’t create mystery and intrigue, you create annoyance.

Lacarnum Inflamarae

shoots fireballs

A book you wish to burn out of your mind completely: Fifty Shades of Grey. I only got 50 pages in, but that was enough. I just…no. I just can’t.

Wingardium Leviosa

levitates objects

A book you wish to reread: I’ve been wanting to re-read Harry Potter lately, and City of Ashes and City of Glass. I want to re-read The Hobbit again before the movie. I also really want to re-read Watchmen too.

Avada Kedavra

causes instant death

Worst book EVER: I hesitate to do this because I really hate to show disrespect to someone’s work, whether I liked it or not. But I do have a disrespect for some authors and books. I disrespect Fifty Shades of Grey. I also disrespect authors who use ghost writers. That’s a whole ‘nother story though.

Spells Cast on You!

Stupefy

puts victim in unconscious state

A book with a chapter you couldn’t seem to get over: Chapter 35: Veritaserum in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I still believe its one of the best written chapters ever. The mystery that is unfolded, the smallest things that all build up together to reveal the true identity of Mad-Eye Moody. I remember being 13 and reading it, and having to read it again to understand the brilliance of it.

Confundo

causes befuddlement or forgetfulness

A book that generally confused you: Beggars in Spain by Nancy Kress. Its a sci-fi, sort of dystopian novel and I wanted to understand and like it so much but it just confused me more and more. It might be because I was reading it in my College Reading class, so I couldn’t understand the depths of it. Maybe I’ll go back and try again.

Crucio

inflicts unbearable pain

A book that was a pain to read: The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau. I had heard SO many good things about it from so many different readers and from all over the blogs, but when I read it, I was just immensely disappointed. It fell so flat to me. I didn’t even finish it. It just felt too close to the Hunger Games to me.

Episkey

heals relatively minor injuries

A feel good book that you enjoyed: Hmmmmm, anything by Jessica Brody or Meg Cabot. These two authors can make me laugh, and make me feel so great

Expelliarmus

temporarily disarms an opponent

A book with a swoon-worthy character: Well….this could go on forever. Jace Wayland (The Mortal Instruments), Jared Lynburn (The Lyburn Legacy), Daniel ‘Day’ Wing (The Legend Trilogy), Sirius Black (HP), Aidan St. Delphi (Covenant series), Peeta Mellark (Hunger Games), Finnick Odair (Hunger Games), Will Herondale (Infernal Devices). I could go on for ages.

Impedimenta

impedes target’s progress

A book that kept you up all night reading: Recently? Clockwork Princess, on release day. The House of Hades, on release day. Champion, on release day. All of these were bought at midnight, on my Kindle and I stayed up reading them. I also stayed up all night reading Unspoken.

Silencio

immediate silencing

A book that left you speechless after you read it: Winger by Andrew Smith and Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. Both books that just literally blew my mind. I can’t stop recommending them to everyone.

Legilimens

allows you to delve into someone’s mind

A book with well-developed characters: Harry Potter, definitely. Each character is so well thought out, and has a back story and a fully fleshed personality, and they’re all so real. Every single one. Its beautiful.

Levicorpus

a spell that turns you upside down

A book that changed your mind about a character from its prequel: Clockwork Prince, which is my favorite in the Infernal Devices. In Clockwork Angel, I was so aghast at the cruel nature of Will Herondale and I was rooting hard for Jem. But in CP, we learn so much more about Will, and it changed my mind COMPLETELY.

Obliviate

used to hide memories

A book with a story you can’t remember: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. I just didn’t really like it all that much, and now I can’t even really remember the story of it.

Peskipiksi Pesternomi

useless spell

A boring book that had absolutely no effect on you: Paper Towns by John Green. I love him to death but this one just bored me the entire time. I couldn’t get into it at all.

Reducto

breaks through solid objects

A book that convinced you to reconsider a certain genre: Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan…it gave me a ton of hope for the YA paranormal genre. I feel its gotten…well, pretty bad lately but I read this book and loved it so I’m hoping its gotten better.

Rictusempra

tickling spell

A book that made you laugh: Winger by Andrew Smith. I haven’t laughed so hard in a book as much as this one.

Sectusempra

offensive spell that violently wounds the target

A book that may have scarred you for life: In a good way, or bad way? Harry Potter scarred me for life, but in all the good ways.

Tarantallegra

makes you dance uncontrollably

A series finale that made you feel giddy: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Nothing can explain the feelings I had while reading that book.

Bombarda Maxima

causes an explosion that breaks through obstacles

A book that made you explode with the feels: I could go on for ages. The last HP book, City of Glass, Clockwork Princess, Champion, The Mark of Athena, Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. So many.

Finite Incantatem

nullifies other spells

A book you thought you’d dislike, but ended up loving: Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan. Her Demon’s Lexicon didn’t impress me much so I didn’t have hope for this one. It blew my expectations out of the water. I love it!

Fictional Crush of the Week-Han Solo from Star Wars

Happy Saturday everyone! Enjoy this week’s Fictional Crush of the Week! This one is a VERY personal favorite of mine :)

Character Name:

Han Solo

han-solo

Book or Series They Appear In:

The Original Star Wars Trilogy

A New Hope, sildenafil Empire Strikes Back, order Return of the Jedi

Author/Creator:

George Lucas

Played By:

Harrison Ford <3 <3

Who They Are:

Han Solo is one of the main three characters of the Original Star Wars trilogy. While Luke Skywalker is the hero, this web and Princess Leia is the not-so-damsel-in-distress, Han Solo is the humor and the sort of bad boy of the good guys. He is a former smuggler, caught up in the rebellion against the Evil Galactic empire almost against his will. He’s a reluctant hero, quick with sarcastic remarks and always full of plans that don’t always work so well. He has the coolest and most loyal of sidekicks, Chewbacca. He always has a remark that causes a lovable eye-roll from his companions. He acts super uncaring but he can have a sweet side too.

Why I Am Crushing On Them:

I’m pretty sure that this is the first fictional crush that I’ve ever had and he remains one of my favorites to this day. I never was on board with Luke Skywalker, although Mark Hamill was pretty cute in the first movie. But he was sort of whiny at times, and he was very serious. I always go for the sarcastic, bad boy. Plus I had always imagined myself as Princess  Leia and Princess Leia ends up with Han Solo. So that just sort of works out that way.

But let’s just look at it. Han Solo is the scruffy, bad boy, who always has the sarcastic remarks. He’s roguishly good looking, and Harrison Ford, god, I can’t even handle it. Its a back and forth sometimes on which character he’s more good looking as: Han Solo or Indiana Jones. Han Solo will always be my man, though. He may not always seem 100% committed, but he’s a good pilot and a good fighter, and he ends up being essential to the rebellion.

Notable Quotes:

Princess Leia: I love you
Han Solo: I know

“Laugh it up, fuzzball.”

“Who you calling scruffy looking?”

Luke: But they’re gonna kill her!
Han Solo: Better her than me!

“Get in there, you big furry oaf! I don’t care what you smell!”

One thing’s for sure, we’re all gonna be a lot thinner.”

“Never tell me the odds.”

“Great. Don’t get cocky, kid.”
