Vote For My Book Cover and Win a Book!

I have something VERY exciting to share with you today!

My novel, pilule A Little Less than Famous, is involved with a really cool blog hop contest over at indie author, H.N. Sieverding‘s website.

17253813

The contest is called Pick of the Litter.

pick of the litter cover contest badge

The premise is fairly simple. Several indie, self-published authors, such as myself, donated e-copies of our books, for the contest. All you have to do to have a chance to win one of these books is to vote for the cover that you like the most.

If there’s a particular book that you want to win, you simply have to comment with that book preference and you can have a chance to win it.

But you guys are totally going to vote for me, right? ;) I hope so! My cover is very simple, but I absolutely love it, and my dad did a great job on it. I never want anyone besides my dad to design my covers!

So please head on over to the blog, and check out the book covers, and see if any of the books sound really good to read. I know that there are definitely ones that I want to read!

You can access the contest and giveaway by clicking this link.

I’m going to add a little twist to this though! If my cover wins the contest, I will give a free e-copy of A Little Less than Famous to every person who voted for it in the contest. So once you vote for it in the contest, head on back over to this post, and let me know in the comment that you voted!

Thanks guys!

Happy Reading and Happy Voting!

NaNoWriMo-Character Fan Casting

Hello all! I hope your writing is going well, story or your reading, more about if you’re not a NaNoWriMo participant!

Today’s post is a little fun. See, here’s the thing: when you’re writing, and you’re putting your character together, of course you have an idea of what your character looks like in your head.

But for me, its sort of blurry. I know generally what they look like, but its hard to truly picture them. I feel their characteristics and their personalities stronger, and that’s how I see them.

So sometimes, I do use famous people as guiding tools for my characters.

Plus its just fun! I think every writer secretly wants their book to become a movie and secretly hopes to see famous people playing their characters one day. So here is my guilty pleasure fan casting for my novel, The Reawakened:

Zoey Deutch as Katy Valentine

Katy Valentine

Katy has long brown hair, large brown eyes, and is about average height. She is strong, trained in various self defenses and fighting techniques, due to her dad’s worries about her safety. She’s definitely beautiful, but she’s strong, fierce and she has quick wit and even quicker sense of sarcasm and temper.

I had never even heard of Zoey Deutch until she was cast as Rose Hathaway in Vampire Academy, but I’m already head over heels for her. She’s beautiful and she’s showing that she can play a fighter. Katy would probably get along with Rose, so Zoey is a great fit. She also fits the description of Katy in my mind :)

Robbie Amell as Ash Matthews

Ash Matthews

Ash is tall, built, with dark brown hair and blue eyes. He’s the captain of both the varsity football and baseball teams at St. Joseph’s Prep. He’s stocky, built, with strong muscles and a flat stomach, and is incredibly athletic. He has a fun personality, preferring to put humor in every situation. When he’s serious though, he is a very determined and ambitious person.

I have to admit, Robbie Amell made an impression on me before I even created Ash Matthews. I’ve really only been writing The Reawakened for a little over a month now. When I was trying to come up with my main male counterpart to Katy, I was watching The Tomorrow People, and I was just smitten by Robbie, and his good looks, his incredible body and his charm. After watching a couple YouTube videos, where he answers fan questions, I just was sold. He is Ash Matthews, and Ash Matthews is him.

Jamie Chung as Madison Wu

Madison Wu

Madison Wu is Katy’s best friend, a tiny little Asian girl who makes up for her small stature in her large personality. She’s beautiful, with long black hair, and perfect skin. She’s on the Honor Society, does as much charity work as possible and is the head of the dance committee.

It was hard to pick Madison. I immediately thought of Brenda Song but she just didn’t fit right to me. The more I looked, the more Jamie popped out to me. She has shown, in her different roles, that she can play a variety of roles, and I think she would be a brilliant Madison. I think she’s a bit too tall to be Madison, but she’s very fitting in my head.

Jon Bernthal as Frank Valentine

Frank Valentine

Frank Valentine is Katy’s father, who is a New York City cop. He’s Italian in background, and has dark brown hair, and dark brown eyes. He’s young, only 38, having only been twenty when Katy was born. He’s fit, and healthy, always ready to work hard at his job.

Jon is the first person that came to mind when it came to Frank. I like someone young, but who can also portray that protective side too. I’m think early Shane in The Walking Dead, not later, crazy, obsessive Shane. I’ve seen Jon in other roles as well, and he’s always portrayed strong characters, protective characters and he’s just a perfect fit for Frank.

Kellie Pickler as Jennifer Flynn

Jennifer Flynn

Jennifer Flynn is Katy’s mother, who is young and strong in her Irish looks. She has blonde hair, blue eyes, and freckles all over her face. She is only 36 years old, having only been 18 when she married Frank and had Katy. She’s an elementary school teacher, who has incredible fashion sense.

I honestly had NO idea who I could even picture for Jennifer. I literally couldn’t picture anyone. I was googling for blonde actresses to find someone to fit the person I had in my head. Now I know Kellie Pickler is not an actress, but a singer, but she jumped out at me. I was watching Ellen, and she was the guest on the show, and I thought she was amazing. She’s ten years younger than Jennifer is supposed to be but I think she would be great, and she could carry that maturity well. And she looks like I picture Jennifer, exactly.

Bill Cobbs as Bert Washington

bert 2

I can’t say much about Bert. Bert will be in The Reawakened toward the end, and he is very pivotal to Katy and her future. He’s an older, African-American man, who is quiet, but incredibly intelligent and incredibly brave. Bill Cobbs was actually the first person I thought of, and if anyone else ever played in Bert in the never-going-to-happen-movie of my book, it would take adjustments.

Alex Pettyfer as Liam

Liam

Liam is a character that surprised me. He is making a small appearance in The Reawakened, and I realized that as I wrote him, he was becoming more and more important. Again, I can’t say more than that but he is important. He’s kind of the All-American boy, blonde hair, green eyes, from the deep South. He’s going to be an interesting character as the story moves along, and he’s going to create some tension. I know a lot of people don’t like Alex Pettyfer, but he’s so hot and I will forever have a crush on this boy, and he’s Liam. You’ll see when you read about Liam. He embodies the confidence and easiness of Liam.

Sarayu Rao as Razi

Razi

I can’t say literally anything about Razi. I just can’t. It would ruin the entire book and that’s awful. But this is exactly how I picture her, except older, probably more like 50s or 60s. I think Sarayu is her thirties. She has such a perfect look and I hope you’ll see that when the book eventually releases, one day, because I am optimistic with this book!

Exclusive Interview with Debut Author, Erin Albert AND a Giveaway!

Hello everyone! How are we doing on this fine Friday morning? Afternoon? Evening? Whatever time it is wherever you are in the world. I have a SUPER fun interview to share with you today. Yesterday I shared my review of debut author, check Erin Albert‘s debut novel, The Prophecy. You can check that out here.

Today, I am excited to share an interview with Erin! She’s a totally sweet person, that I actually met through Twitter and blogging! I am very proud to have her as a friend, and she has been incredibly helpful in my own journey as an author. I wish her a TON of luck in her novel journey, and the journey we’ll take through her Fulfillment Trilogy.

You can find her on Twitter, Facebook, her website and GoodReads.

For now, let’s enjoy this awesome interview!

Sara: What can you tell us about The Prophecy? What can we expect from it?

Erin: The Prophecy is a fast paced YA fantasy novel set in the war torn lands of Vanguard and Etherea. For centuries , the two sides have fought a battle, the origins of which no one even remembers, but long ago, a prophecy alluded to a person who could bring eventual peace to the embattled nations. This story follows the journey of the girls proclaimed The Fulfillment of that prophecy. Let’s just say things don’t go according to plan! ;)

Sara: Will The Prophecy be a standalone novel, or will you be writing a sequel? If so, which book has been easier to write: the first or the second?

Erin: The Prophecy is the first book in The Fulfillment series, which will contain three books. Book 2 is tentatively called The Outlanders and Book 3 The Fulfillment. I wrote all three books in three months. The writing and creating are easy; it’s the editing that takes up the most time.

Sara: How does it feel that your debut novel is so close to releasing?

TheProphecy_ErinAlbert_AuthorPhoto_Smaller

Erin: I vacillate, sometimes within a five-minute span, between being insanely excited and totally terrified. I spent so much time working on a story and creating the characters, a sliver of my soul within the piece. It’s both thrilling and nerve-wracking to present that to the world.

Sara: You won the Most Social Author Bloggy Award. Is staying in touch with your fans and readers important to you, and why?

Erin: Winning absolutely floored me because my competitors were just awesome! Yes, staying in touch with fans and readers is crucial to me. I love interacting with them, and I can’t wait until I’m free to discuss the characters and world of The Prophecy with them. Twitter has been such a wonderful place for me to meet and interact with people, and I consider my followers my friends. :)

Sara: What is your writing process like? Where do you get your inspiration?

Erin: You may have heard me mention them before, but I have a Dream Team in place to keep motivated and on task. I have ADD, so it’s very easy for me to just flit away into my own little world and forget what I’m actually supposed to be doing. Dream Team member Kim keeps me moving forward with the book. She requires a chapter a day which helps me complete my work in a timely fashion. Dream Team member Danielle is responsible for making sure I don’t flake out on the characters or the storyline. She full immerses herself in my world and catches all my “he walked through a wall” or “you said that wall was on the right and now it’s on the left” errors. And I turn to Dream Team member Dawn for my creative inspiration. She’s the one who helps me dream big and work out any writer’s block (usually over a bowl of queso at Moe’s). I think people can draw inspiration from a variety of sources with the right mindset.

Sara: Who are some of your influences? What are some of your favorite books to read?

Erin: The Prophecy is heavily influenced by Game of Thrones and Arthurian legend. Personally, I enjoy the works of Cassandra Clare, George RR Martin, Rick Riordan, Richelle Mead and Veronica Roth.

Sara: What advice do you give to aspiring writers?

Erin: My advice would be never give up. The road to publication can be long and hard, but keep pressing on to achieve your dream. Very few things worth having come easily.

Sara: What is one thing you have to have while writing?

Erin: Besides my laptop? Every day at 3:30, I MUST have a Diet Pepsi with Lime and a little container of chocolate.

theprophecy333x500

Sara: What are two facts about yourself that some people may not know?

Erin: Wow, I’d say I’m a pretty open book, so there isn’t much people don’t know about me. Haha!! Let’s see…I’m deathly afraid of fire, so much that I don’t allow candles on my birthday cake. I have never missed an episode of True Blood (Alcide…’nuff said).

Sara: What are some of your favorite things to do outside of writing?

Erin: Besides writing, I enjoy running, kickboxing, reading, watching TV, hanging out with friends, and freelance editing.

Sara: And as I ask to all my interviewees, who is your fictional crush(es)?

Erin: a) Percy Jackson–When he comes of age and crawls out of the pages of a book, I will marry him. I LOVE a funny guy. Laughter is the way to my heart. Demigoddess in the house!!

b) Jem Carstairs–Could there be a more perfect man in all the world??

c) Adrian Ivashkov–I adore his snark and pretty much everything else about him.

d) Alcide from True Blood–He’s my Pack Master. Yow!

Plot Summary:

From Good Reads:

Growing up on a small farm in the kingdom of Vanguard, seventeen-year-old Layla Givens lives a deceptively tranquil existence. But her carefully constructed life quickly falls apart when she’s abducted by a religious zealot who proclaims her The Fulfillment of an ancient peace prophecy and whisks her away to marry her greatest enemy.

Wilhelm, Prince of the Ethereals, is reluctant to meet his new bride. He’s grown up believing Vanguards are evil, an enemy to fight and fear…not love. Can he set aside his prejudices and work alongside Layla to bring lasting peace after centuries of war?

Nash, a loner who has never fit in, carries a huge secret, one big enough to destroy both kingdoms. When he accidentally meets Layla, he’s no longer content to live in the shadows, but he must resist his growing attraction–for her safety and for the longevity of the two kingdoms.

When Nash’s secret is revealed, a firestorm sweeps through both realms, with Layla at the center. Now, she must choose between duty and desire while the fate of two nations hangs in the balance.

The Review:

I think that Erin has an amazing start to her series, and that there is a wonderful premise here. I am a fan of epic fantasies, taken into worlds that seem familiar, like worlds of old, but with those twists. Think Game of Thrones, Seven Realms by Cinda Chima, etc. Epic fantasies.

That being said, I think there was a lot being left unanswered. There was so much that could be done with this book and this world, but I felt the first book was incredibly rushed. The amount of events that go down in this one book could honestly fill an entire trilogy, I feel, and yet it was just so incredibly rushed. I wanted to know what happened next, definitely, but I think that more time could be spent on really diving into the worlds, and the story. By slowing it down a little more, she could create more tension in the novel and really build an attachment to the stories and the characters.

Which brings me to the characters. I loved all of them, I loved all the mystery in the connections and all of that. But I wanted to know more about them. I want more of Layla and Wil and Nash, and the rulers of the two kingdoms. I wanted to really get to know them. I felt this first book only touched on the surface of them, their histories and their personalities. There was so much happening between all the characters, and it was kind of hard to keep up because I was still trying to really learn about these characters. They lack a sort of depth that I hope will be made up in the second and third books.

I sound like I’m beating this book up but I’m not, I swear. I think its a fine debut for a new author and I think it really does have incredible potential. Erin has created an intriguing world, and a world where there’s a lot of questions and mysteries that I am eager to find out the answers to. I like the idea of feuding countries, and the balance of peace and the avoidance of a war depending on young people. I think that’s why YA is such a popular thing right now. I think Wil, Layla and Nash all the potential to become incredible people, strong people and I think the three of them together can accomplish a lot.

I will also say this: the world that is being built is built well enough that I want to know more about that, and that is a good thing. If it was just completely not worth my time, I wouldn’t care but I do. I do think there are some holes here and there, but I think that’s my where my enthusiasm comes from. I CARE about these people and their world and I’m dying to learn more about it. I want to know what the world is like outside these two countries, I want to know how it came to be that they are so hating of each other. I want to know more! I hope we will get more!

I will also say that she knows how to execute a great cliffhanger. Two different things are hanging in the balance at the end of the book, two things that made me say out loud “Oh, come on, now, really?” So great job on that. A good cliffhanger keeps a reader interested, and she definitely was able to accomplish this.

Rating:

3 out of 5 Stars

Recommended or Not?:

I would say yes. I think this book has an incredible amount of potential and I’m hoping that the second and third books of the trilogies dives deep into what could be a very intriguing and intricate world. I think Erin is a lovely person and a talented writer, and its a strong debut novel, that has a lot of potential as a trilogy.

NaNoWriMo-Tackling Writer’s Block!

We’re near the halfway point of November, which means we’re halfway through NaNoWriMo. Now that the novelty and excitement of the challenge has worn off a bit, sometimes people can run into second week slumps, or they can slow down considerably.

And I’m hoping that this will help you to continue.

I will start by saying this one thing: there is no such thing as writer’s block. Don’t get all crazy on me, hear me out. I don’t think there’s actual writer’s block. There are other things getting in the way of you writing: lack of motivation, distractions, thinking too much.

So what I’m really going to be tackling in this post are the problems that come when you just can’t seem to get those words on the page, and how you can deal with them.

Now, these are all ways that I deal when I have a hard time continuing my writing, and bits and pieces that I’ve picked up over the past couple years in meeting all the authors that I’ve met. Everyone is different in their writing strategies but I do hope that this helps a little bit.

1. You’re Thinking Too Much

This is the one that I struggle with the most, which is why I’m writing about it first. I think way, way, way too much when I’m writing. I’m thinking about whether or not the grammar is great. I’m thinking whether or not the actual writing is good, or if the scene that I’m working on now fits with earlier scenes and whether it’ll fit with future scenes. I’m worrying if what I’m writing is good enough, if people will like it. I’m comparing my writing and my story to other writers.

And I have to stop doing that, and so do you! I think we all fall into that trap and it has to stop. So many writers that i’ve met over the past year have told me the same thing over and over again: Just write. Just write, and don’t be afraid to write really badly.

The point is to write. Just write. Don’t think about whether its good, or whether it makes sense. Not yet. Don’t worry about that yet. Just write. I will never forget: a few weeks ago, I met Cinda Chima and Marlene Perez, and Marlene quoted Nora Roberts, saying, “You can’t fix a blank page.” Just put your pen to the paper, put those fingers on the keyboard, and write. We can always go back and make it better!

2. Take a Break

On the other hand, don’t FORCE yourself to write. Take a break and go do other things, things that don’t require a lot of thinking. Take a walk, go out to dinner, play a game. I would NOT recommend reading a book or watching a movie. You want to focus on your story, and immersing yourself into other stories may only hinder you while you’re feeling blocked.

So definitely take a break. Sometimes getting away from the story, and distracting yourself from it for a bit can really help with bringing your focus back to the story. I’ve heard from authors that they’ll take a bath, or a shower. Get up, put some music on and have a dance party.

Sometimes just getting away from the actual keyboard but not the story helps too. Close the laptop or notebook, and just kind of lay back in bed and focus on the story. Visualize it in your head, play out the scenes like a movie, and sometimes that can help to put them into words. You can play with the scenarios in your head, until they seem to work better than what you had them at before.

Lastly, maybe talk it out with someone. Tell them where you’re at, what’s going on with your characters and maybe tell them your concerns. As an outsider, they may have some insight to where your character could go from there. Sometimes talking it out can help lead you in the direction you want to go.

3. Work on Something Else

This can mean so many different things. For me, I either work on my blog, because its a way to write but its not nearly as stressful, or I work on another scene in my novel.

Now some authors don’t do that, and they recommend writing in a linear matter. Some authors jump around. Its all sort of up to you. I have never had an issue with writing future scenes, in fact it helps me. Sometimes its hard to push yourself through those hard scenes, the ones that are slower, and are more build up and less action. I can understand that. I’m sort of stuck in that right now.

But what I do is, I either push through, reminding myself that I get to write a fun action scene at the end of it OR I just write the action scene. I write the exciting scene because its fun. Sometimes, in writing that more exciting scene, I answer questions that haven’t even been asked yet, and it helps me to write those slower scenes. I know exactly how I want to lead up to the scene I just wrote. It gets me excited for the story again, and I’m writing again.

It also helps to write other things as well. Write for your blog, if you have one. Write in a journal, or do a writing exercise. Keep using your writing skills, and maybe focusing on something else for a little while will help give you that motivation to continue your story.

4. Eliminate Distractions

Turn off the TV, turn off the wi-fi. Make sure that you are writing in a clutter free zone.

Now, I can write with all of those, but I’m also the oldest of six kids, and I live in a house with eight other people. Peace and quiet are concepts that I’m just not familiar with and I’ve gotten VERY comfortable with noise. In fact, silence bothers me and it can be a distraction for me.

But for most people, you need to cut out those distractions. Turn off the TV, get yourself to a quiet place, where you’re alone. Play music. Music can help, but don’t let it distract you too much. I usually only listen to music when I’m confident in what I’m writing. When I’m less sure, I tend to write in silence.

Definitely turn off the wi-fi. This is one that I have the HARDEST time dealing with. I get distracted by Facebook and Tumblr and Twitter. Don’t let yourself be distracted. Just write. When you have nothing but the blank page in front of you, you can concentrate on it, and write. And remember, it doesn’t have to be good! JUST WRITE. Make sure you have nothing around to distract you. I’ll put my phone on my charger, on the other side of the room, and I’ll clear the space around me. Make sure the only the that’s between you and writing is the keyboard or the pen.

There are softwares you can purchase, for fairly cheap (think 10-15 dollars) to help you out. Freedom will block out all internet for a period of time, up to eight hours, in order to promote productivity. For those of us who use internet for research and such, there’s Anti-Social, which blocks out sites like Facebook and Twitter. Definitely check these out.

5. Set a Goal

This can be in any form. Set a time limit, or a word goal. This holds you accountable, and you’re more likely to finish the work if you’re holding yourself to it. Tell someone that you’re working on this goal, someone that you know will remind you and hold you accountable as well.

Set a time limit. Tell yourself you’ll write for an hour, two hours, three hours a day. Set a time for that. Tell yourself, “I will write for an hour from 8 pm to 9 pm before I go to bed”.

I set word count goals. I tell myself that I must write at least 1K words a day. Sometimes I bypass it and sometimes I don’t reach it at all but the fact that I made the goal, and I wrote something is better than not sitting down to write anything at all.

You can also set weekly goals as well. We get busy through out our weeks because of work or school or family commitments or social commitments and its understandable. Set yourself a word count goal for the entire week, so that you can write at your own pace through out the week. Keep yourself accountable.

6. Treat it Like a Job

Author Shannon Messenger told me, back in May, that its NEVER too early to start treating writing like a job and I’ve really taken it to heart. Put as much effort and time as you can into it, if you’re passionate about it and you want to get it done. Create a schedule for yourself and commit to that schedule. Tell yourself that you cannot make plans during certain hours, because you are working. You wouldn’t skip out on your job for things (for the most part), so don’t skip out on writing either.

Also, the more time and commitment that you give to your writing and your novel,  the better it will be and the more likely you are to get it done. Treating it like a job will only help you to get better.

Sometimes, I just don’t believe in getting inspiration. Once you’ve published that first novel, and you start working on new ones, you’ll be on a deadline. You can’t wait for inspiration. Treating your novel like a job now, giving yourself set times to write and deadlines to meet, helps prepare you.
