Ontario Teen Book Fest 2014!

GraphicOne

I know. I know. I know.

I’m awful! This was almost two weeks ago and I’ve just been SO incredibly busy and I kept meaning to vlog about it, sildenafil but that never happened so I’m just going to write about it quickly because all I have to say about this awesome event is that it was awesome.

Last year’s Ontario Teen Book Fest introduced to me to a multitude of amazing authors, a lot of whom I’ve since then become friends with. Which is incredible to me, both as a book blogger and as a writer. It means the world to me.

So I was most definitely looking forward to this year’s fest. I organized the blog tour, held a giveaway and did all kinds of promotion for it, because I love this event SO much.

I was asked back again as an official blogger, with my best fangirl friend, Sylvia from Fangirl Feeels, and we attended the official Author Breakfast, and started meeting the authors, getting to know them, and interviewing them for our vlog, which you can check out now!

It was a blast, like always, and I really enjoyed meeting all the authors and talking about fictional crushes and great teen books they wish they’d had as teens. I feel like I made a lot of connections and a lot of friends that day.

There was the opening keynote speeches from Jessica Brody (LOVE her), Lauren Kate (seriously, she was so pregnant and IN HEELS, much props!) and John Corey Whaley (who seriously should be my best friend). They all had wonderful things to say about life and writing. They made me laugh, and they made me think, and they all made me feel a lot better about being a struggling writer. Lauren talk a lot about the struggles of getting through a book, and it felt good to hear that even a published, seasoned author can feel that sort of despair where you want to throw your computer across the room. Jessica and Corey both talked about finding the right path to writing, and emphasizing that it can take time, and it can take making the wrong choices and making mistakes to get to where you need to be.

We then split up to go to our first panel, and I made sure to attend the debut author panel with Katherine Ewell, Livia Blackburne, Ava Dellaira and Catherine Linka. They had so much to say about writing and reading and getting into the world of publishing and writing. What struck me as super awesome is that they all had very different backgrounds (high school student turned Stanford student, neuroscientist, screenwriter, bookseller), and were obviously different ages, but they had all accomplished the same goal and that was great. They all had wonderful things to say.

We broke for lunch after that, which was cool, because we were back in the room with the authors again! Yay! We sat near Katherine Ewell, Ava Dellaira and Livia Blackburne and talked about writing and books and Disneyland and all sorts of fun stuff, and that was just an awesome experience to have.

After lunch, we headed to the newest addition to the Teen Book Fest schedule: author speed dating. Basically there were tables for all the readers to sit at, and every 8 minutes or so, the authors would switch to another table. You basically got some personal time with about…six or seven authors and it was SO great. Sylvia and I, along with my sister Jessica, sat a table together and had some great conversations with Lauren Miller, Catherine Linka, Jessi Kirby, Jessica Brody, Ava Dellaira and Katherine Ewell and it was awesome. A GREAT addition to the Fest, for sure!

After that, we had the final panel for the day, and we headed to a panel with Jessi Kirby, Elana K Arnold, Ava Dellaira and John Corey Whaley, all about relationships and I’ve read most of their books so that was cool. Talking about the dynamic of relationships, whether family or friends or love interests, is important and the title of the panel was “It’s Complicated” so the authors tried to insert “complicated” into as many answers as possible!

After the last panel of the day, all the authors gathered at their tables to sign their books, and we finished gathering interviews for the vlog above, and got all our books signed. It was awesome meeting ALL of the authors, and getting to know them. I am glad I’ve read some of their books and can’t wait to get my hands on the others!

I have to throw out MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR props to Courtney Saldana, the Youth Services librarian, for putting on another fantastic event and for letting me be a part of it. Much thanks to her partner in crime, Aly, and all her volunteers as well, and the Mrs. Nelson’s Book Fair Company. You guys ROCK.

I canNOT wait until next year, to meet all kinds of awesome authors and to be a part of it once again. Plus I heard from an inside source that my darling Andrew Smith will be there, so I’m ready for it!

Remember, you can check out all the pictures from the Ontario Teen Book Fest (at least the ones I took), on the official What A Nerd Girl Says facebook page here.

Lastly, congrats to Peyton, Jasmine and Stephanie for winning the prizes in the official Ontario Teen Book Fest blog tour giveaway!

OH! And it felt SO awesome being in the program. I felt important, and helpful!

WonderCon 2014 Vlog Recap!

So if you don’t follow me on Twitter, information pills Facebook or Instagram, cure you may not have seen all of the awesome pictures that I posted over this past weekend, cure because I was attending WonderCon 2014 in Anaheim, CA!

For those who don’t know, WonderCon is basically a small version of the very well known San Diego Comic Con! WonderCon is actually put together by the same organization that puts Comic Con together. I LOVE WonderCon because its smaller, and Anaheim is SO close to me, and I always have an absolute blast.

This year was NO different :)

I went and picked up my badge early on Thursday in order to enjoy the awesomeness all weekend without having to wait in line to get my badge. I met amazing people like Melissa de la Cruz and Margaret Stohl and James Dashner, the cast of the CW show, The 100, and SO much more.

But I’ll stop writing now so that you can enjoy my vlog post all about it! I managed to squeeze all 3 days of the convention into ONE 15 minutes vlog! That’s not bad for me HAHA!

Don’t forget you can also check out all the pictures from the weekend on Facebook here.

ALSO! I got my hands on lots of swag, which will be part of my blog birthday giveaway next month in May so watch out for that!

Until then, enjoy!

Can’t wait until next year!

Show Us Your Nerd!

Because, illness as always, order I like subjecting myself to blog torture, I have created yet another segment for this blog.

But this time, it will take very little work from me, and more work from YOU, so I’m really excited about it! I want to feature you guys, and I thought Fan of the Week was the way to do it but it just wasn’t working out the way I wanted it too.

So I decided to do something different. We all represent our nerd in different ways. Some of us plaster posters on our walls, build the best book collection possible or tattoo it on their skins. Some cosplay as their favorite characters or write on blogs or deck out their car or camp out in the streets or go to conventions around the world. Some start collections or write fan fiction. There are so many ways to express our nerd, and I want to see it all.

Just to give you a little example of this, I’m going to share MY nerd today!

First off, my tattoos :)

Tattoo Collage

I have nine fandom tattoos, ten in all. (My Something Corporate tattoo could also be represented as a fandom tattoo, as music is totally a fandom but…we’ll leave that one out for now). I have my Deathly Hallows, my wrist tattoos “Wit Beyond Measure” and “Man’s Greatest Treasure”. I have my “The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death”, my Rebel Alliance and “Always” tattoos. I have my fearless rune, my fearless Circular Gallifreyan tattoo. I have my Divergent ravens and my Vampire Academy molnija.

Harry Potter, Stars Wars, Mortal Instruments, Doctor Who, Divergent, and Vampire Academy, all represented on my skin because of what they mean to me. I would write more but there is a Nerd Ink post that will be posted TOMORROW, so you can read more about them then!

2014-02-28 13.05.08 2014-02-28 13.06.06 2014-02-28 13.07.00 2014-02-28 13.07.11 2014-02-28 13.07.27 2014-02-28 13.10.39

I don’t own bookshelves. I know. I should. But I just don’t. I don’t have the room. But I’m addicted to buying books and so I there are books EVERYWHERE in my room. Also in large tubs in my backyard. When you come stumbling into my room, you are bound to run into books everywhere. I’m pretty sure my family wants to kill me but I won’t stop. Haha. Its an addiction that I most definitely glad to have.

2014-02-28 13.18.46

My dolls/pillows. The Hermione and Ron dolls in the back were made by my darling friends in the Los Angeles Dumbledore’s Army. The four dolls (Amy Pond…who is missing her jacket somehow, The 11th Doctor, Magnus Bane and Luna Lovegood) are all made by my mom. I love the Magnus one because its also signed by Cassandra Clare, Godfrey Gao, Jamie Campbell Bower, Lily Collins, Harald Zwart, Kevin Zegers, and Robbie Sheehan.

2014-02-28 16.12.05

This one is so hard to see haha but you can see part of my movie and TV collection. Its so small so far, but I’m working on it :) I have some of my favorite movies and I’m getting some TV shows like Doctor Who and Glee and Game of Thrones, so it just has been some slow going. Doing my best to make it bigger.

The next way I show my nerd is to plaster my walls :)

2014-02-28 13.18.27

You can see my picture with Cassandra Clare, when I interviewed her. I was able to see her later, so I got the picture signed. I have a poster of the new Harry Potter artwork, signed by the new artist, Kazu Kibuishi. The Magnus Bane picture is signed by Godfrey Gao and my friend Erin from That One Geek Girl got it for me while she was at Comic Con. The penguin “artwork” is something my aunt got me for Christmas because she knows how obsessive I am about penguins.

The Clockwork Princess poster was given to me by Cassie herself so I treasure that one deeply.

2014-02-28 15.02.42

This wall is kind of nuts. I switch it out once in awhile, depending on the new posters I get. The Doctor Who and Vampire Academy posters are all brand new so I just put them up. The City of Bones, Catching Fire, and Vampire Academy posters are all signed by cast members :) My Something Corporate shirt is also signed by the band members too so there’s that. The big ol’ calendar on the wall is the calendar I use to keep up with book events and book releases and movie premieres and just my blog in general.

2014-02-28 15.02.48

A close up picture from what you saw above. You can also see my Tangled artwork, and my BooBoo Stewart autograph that Katie from Better in Black got for me.

2014-02-28 15.02.56

Its hard to see but the top frame is a signed photo of Draco Malfoy signed by Tom Felton. He was a BLAST to meet, and I’m glad I was able to. The smaller picture in the frame is a picture of Luna Lovegood signed by Evanna Lynch that my dear friend Kathleen got for me.

2014-03-03 13.18.53

My fandom jewelry. I honestly am not a fan of jewelry (unless its that oh-so-special ring on that oh-so-special finger haha), but I do like this sort of stuff. I’ve only got Doctor Who and Mortal Instruments/Infernal Devices themed stuff but I’m sure I’ll get more as time goes on haha.

I was going to show you guys my car, because I have a personalized license plate, and license plate frames, and a TON of fandom stickers all over the car. Unfortunately though, I could not find the picture collage I made of it on my computer and I’m just too lazy to go outside and take new  pictures. You guys will see it eventually, I hope haha.

**************

I hope you all enjoyed seeing my nerd!

Now its YOUR turn to show off yours!

Send in your pictures of your posters or your car, your tattoos, your cosplay, whatever you do to show off your nerd, and we’ll share it on the blog. Each person will have their own featured post so send it in. You can send it in at whatanerdgirlsays at gmail dot com.

I can’t wait to see!
