Spirit Bound and Last Sacrifice Book Reviews

I don’t normally do dual book reviews but I read this so quickly, case and they sort of blended together, so its easier for me to do that. Also, since then, I’ve read three more books and I need to review those as well, so it would just be easier for me to review them together.

GoodReads Summary:

Please keep in mind that while there will be NO spoilers for these two books, there will be spoilers for the previous four books. You can read the reviews for Vampire Academy, Frostbite, Shadow Kiss and Blood Promise by clicking their titles.

For Spirit Bound:

After a long and heartbreaking journey to Dimitri’s birthplace in Siberia, Rose Hathaway has finally returned to St. Vladimir’s-and to her best friend, Lissa. It is nearly graduation, and the girls can’t wait for their real lives beyond the Academy’s iron gates to begin. But Rose’s heart still aches for Dimitri, and she knows he’s out there, somewhere.
She failed to kill him when she had the chance. And now her worst fears are about to come true. Dimitri has tasted her blood, and now he is hunting her. And this time he won’t rest until Rose joins him… forever.

For Last Sacrifice:

Rose Hathaway has always played by her own rules. She broke the law when she ran away from St. Vladimir’s Academy with her best friend and last surviving Dragomir princess, Lissa. She broke the law when she fell in love with her gorgeous, off-limits instructor, Dimitri. And she dared to defy Queen Tatiana, leader of the Moroi world, risking her life and reputation to protect generations of dhampir guardians to come.
Now the law has finally caught up with Rose – for a crime she didn’t even commit. She’s in prison for the highest offense imaginable: the assassination of a monarch. She’ll need help from both Dimitri and Adrian to find the one living person who can stall her execution and force the Moroi elite to acknowledge a shocking new candidate for the royal throne: Vasilisa Dragomir.

But the clock on Rose’s life is running out. Rose knows in her heart the world of the dead wants her back…and this time she is truly out of second chances. The big question is, when your whole life is about saving others, who will save you?

My Review:

I am incredibly impressed with how much better each of these books get as the story goes along. I’ve made it clear before: series that go longer than a few books don’t usually hold up. At least I don’t tend to think so. Its hard to continually keep a story going. But Richelle Mead does it, and does it very well. After the complete heartbreak that was Blood Promise, I was immediately hooked back into the story, and finished these two books quickly.

The characters become so much better than what they were in the first four books. They become more complex, they are more than just teenagers. Rose and Lissa and Adrian and Dimitri and Christian, and all of them, its more than just the typical teen problems. They are now so much involved in their world, in the politics and the sort of dramatics that are going on that they just didn’t see when they were in school. I also think this is the novel where they begin to grow up. They are starting to experience things that make them older, wiser, smarter. Rose went through the entire experience in Russia with Strigoi Dimitri, and that has changed her. The journeys that the characters take as Dimitri returns, as a murder occurs and Rose is framed for it, as Lissa embarks on a challenge that will change her life…they all change. I think Richelle Mead really realizes that her characters are not children anymore and she reflects that so much in these last two books.

I also really enjoyed how she wrapped up these novels. I didn’t expect the things that happened to happen. I know that’s very vague but I don’t want to ruin the story in the slightest for those of you who have never read it. I think she creates all this drama, in the unexpected plot turns, like Rose being framed, and Lissa’s…challenge and I didn’t expect the outcome for any of it. I was gripping my Nook in excitement, staying up until all hours to finish the books. There was so much tension, so much mystery to the end, and it keeps you wondering how on earth it was going to end. I honestly didn’t see it coming at all. I also love all the feelings the books gave me. There was so much heartbreak but also romance, and happy endings too. I had these times of emotions that I could barely handle. There is a part with Dimitri, Rose and a little boy….and that part drove me to tears.

I think that Richelle Mead creates an incredible world, with really well developed characters. Her books have it all: action, romance, politics, coming-of-age-ness (yeah, I just made that up), humor, and so much more. It took me years to read these books because I don’t read vampire novels, but these are so much more than vampire novels. In fact, it wasn’t hard for me to forget that these characters were vampires. Her world is wonderful, and I love Rose and the rest of the characters. Its no wonder that she returned to that world for the Bloodlines series. Its addicting and fun, and I am truly in love with these books.

My Rating:

Spirit Bound: 5 out of 5 Stars

Last Sacrifice: 5 out of 5 Stars

Technically this is what I’m reading right now. I’m 90% of the way through it, so I’m going to be reading something different in…an hour or so haha.

What did you recently finish reading?

I finally feel like I’m back on a roll with reading. I have finished SO many books since last week.

7939859

Once I finished Blood Promise, after it being months since I read Shadow Kiss, I started BUSTING through the rest of the VA books. I think this one is my favorite of all six.

9797582

SUCH a great ending to the VA series. So many unexpected twists and turns, so much action and romance and politics and magic and fighting. I loved the end of this.

13576132

I took a break from the VA world to read the e-ARC of Lindsay Cumming’s debut novel, The Murder Complex. I’ve been following her on instagram and twitter for ages now, and was SO excited to dive into this book. I’m excited to help her promote it in the future.

8709527

I am LOVING this series. I’m reading it so fast. I call this: the series where I find myself ANOTHER fictional boyfriend. Sigh. Adrian Ivashkov. I love Dimitri from the VA series but Adrian is a whole ‘nother level.

8709523

I honestly think this series keeps getting better and better. I love Rose of the VA series more than I like Sydney BUT I like Adrian more than Dimitri so it balances out. And I will say, I love that Sydney is incredibly intelligent, and she is so different than Rose in their approach to conflicts. I am seriously loving this series.

I can’t imagine that I am going to finish Indigo Spell and not want to immediately read this book, so I’m 100% sure this is the next book I’ll be reading. I’m a little sad about reading it because then there will be no more to read. And I’m not good with patience.

Kami Garcia/Unbreakable

I keep hearing really good things about this book. I was not a fan of Beautiful Creatures but I keep hearing good things about this, and I bought this a few days ago with my nifty bookstore employee discount so I’m going to read it and give it a shot.

12294652

This book caught my eye and after a bunch of VA and Bloodlines, I’m looking forward to reading more contemporary YA. I haven’t been writing much, because when I read paranormal, sci-fi, and dystopian, etc., it starts to bleed into my own story. So I’m looking forward to some good ‘ol contemporary YA.

Blogger Spotlight-Jade from Dhampirs and Dragomirs

One of the best parts about running this blog is having the ability to meet some really cool people, site and some of the coolest people that I have met have led me to really cool blogs. I’ve said it before, no one’s blog is 100% original but everyone’s voices are different so there are blogs that I love to read because I love the writer, and I love the passion that they show for what they are writing. They are fun and interesting to read and they inspire me to get better and better in my blog.

So I decided to do a feature (inspired by Megan at the Nerdy Girlie’s Geek Girls Gab), where I profile the bloggers that I love. Not only do I get to find out more about them, but I also get to share them with you guys! Most of the bloggers that I follow are like me, nerd girls, fan girls and they enjoy the same things as me, and you! Every blogger that I profile is one that is super important to me and I urge you to check them out!

Sara: Tell me a Little Bit About Yourself:

Jade: My name’s Jade and I’m an 18 year old girl living in Los Angeles. I’m pursing an acting career, so right now am on sets most of the days of the week doing background work on various thing to make money while going out on auditions and doing short films and taking classes. I’m currently on a YouTube series called Teens React. I love going to concerts, specifically Paramore who I’ve seen 23 times live, and watching Netflix and reading a lot in my spare time, and lots of times putting off other things to finish a good book haha.

Sara: Tell me about your blog:

Jade: I run a Vampire Academy fansite called Dhampirs and Dragomirs, the name comes from the race of half human half vampires, called Dhampirs, and one of the main characters, Lissa Dragomir, last name. It’s dedicated to getting all the latest news and information on the Vampire Academy and Bloodlines book series by Richelle Mead, and news on the movie of Vampire Academy coming out Valentines Day next year. There are also gonna be many contests to win VA swag, and a forum board coming soon. On the website you can find out about all the different books in the series, events of the cast and author coming up, the cast of the movie, and much more.

Jade at the Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Los Angeles Premiere. This is where we met!

Sara: What inspired you to start your blog?

Jade: I was inspired to start my blog after I went to the Mortal Instruments Los Angeles premiere and talked to quite a lot of fansites for it, and heard all the amazing stories, connections, and more they had all had. I had thought about starting a website for a while, but I wasn’t sure what for. I had seen there weren’t really many Vampire Academy fansites, and it’s my all time favorite book series, and I love and have so much passion for this world, and then especially with the movie coming out, I finally decided to just do it. :)

Sara: What is your favorite nerd memory?

Jade: Oh god, this is a hard one. Are nerd and fangirl considered the same? Haha. I guess my favorite nerd memory is that for the past couple years I go to the Festival of Books every year to meet some of my favorite authors, go to panels, get books signed, and of course buy books. I always have a great time going, and I first met Richelle Mead a few years ago there and was freaking out when I found out she was gonna be there and had an amazing time meeting her!

Jade and Vampire Academy author, Richelle Mead!

Jade and Vampire Academy author, Richelle Mead!

Sara: What are you most looking forward to, as far as new books/movies/etc?

Jade: Um, obviously the Vampire Academy movie!! You have no clue how long I’ve been waiting for it to be made, and now it’s finished shooting and I just have to stick it out till February to see it! Also really looking forward to The Fault In Our Stars, Catching Fire, Divergent, and American Hustle to come out. I’m loving American Horror Story:Coven and Once Upon A Time right now, and can’t wait for The Carrie Diaries to come back on (I never even watched Sex and the City but I LOVE this show, no guilt haha). Book wise obviously The Fiery Heart in the Bloodlines series by Richelle Mead, Allegiant by Veronica Roth, Cress from the Lunar chronicles by Marissa Meyer, Dreams of Gods and Monsters from the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series by Laini Taylor, Ignite Me from the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi, and many more but I just can’t think of them right now! I’m excited for WonderCon next year, and of course the Festival of Books again, and am hoping to attend ComicCon too!

Sara: As my blog is mostly about books and reading, what are some of your favorite books or authors to read?

001

Jade: Well obviously all the authors of the books I mentioned above, and of course Richelle Mead. Her adult books are also fantastic, Gameboard of The Gods was amazing and so is her Dark Swan series, so if you like her YA stuff definitely check that out. I love all of Ellen Hopkin’s book, they are all written in a really cool way, kind of like poems, and are phenomenal contemporary stories. Diana Peterfreund, just finished For Darkness Shows the Stars and it was beautiful, also her killer Unicorn series I adored (yes you heard right, killer unicorns haha.) Rachel Caine’s The Morganville Vampire series, Jodi Meadows, all of Cassandra Clares books, The Hunger Games, Brodi Ashton, Lauren Destafano, Carrie Ryan, Deb Caletti, Jeri-Smith Ready…..and so many more. If you really want to see all my favorite books and authors it might be easier to just go on my goodreads and look lol. (Check out Jade’s GoodReads here).

Sara: What are some of your favorite blogs to follow?

Jade: Ahh I actually don’t follow many blogs, I know I know shame on me! But of course the wonderful What a Nerd girl says and I love Krys from Biblopunkk! She writes great reviews and has turned me on to many amazing books/series I would’ve never known about if it wasn’t for her. She’s basically my book filter since we have very similar tastes in books, anything she gives a 4 or a 5 I put it on my list, and anything below I’m cautious of. She also always hosts great ARC giveaways, and I recently won one! So go check her out! Ahh I actually don’t follow many blogs, I know I know shame on me! GoodReads Summary:

It’s springtime at St. Vladimir’s Academy, erectile and Rose Hathaway is this close to graduation. Since making her first Strigoi kills, Rose hasn’t been feeling quite right. She’s having dark thoughts, behaving erratically, and worst of all… might be seeing ghosts.

As Rose questions her sanity, new complications arise. Lissa has begun experimenting with her magic once more, their enemy Victor Dashkov might be set free, and Rose’s forbidden relationship with Dimitri is starting to heat up again. But when a deadly threat no one saw coming changes their entire world, Rose must put her own life on the line – and choose between the two people she loves most.

My Review:

Note: This review will NOT contain spoilers for THIS novel, however there WILL most likely be spoilers for the first two novels of the series.

I think this is the book that finally sold me fully and completely on the Vampire Academy series. I have thoroughly enjoyed the first two novels, and have enjoyed them enough to continue to read them, especially since everyone keeps telling me to read them, and keeps applauding me the further that I venture into the series. However, I think that with the first two books, I was merely reading them and enjoying them, and marveling at the fact that I was so enjoying books about vampires (gasp!) but after this third book, I can say, officially that I’m converted.

I am a fan. I’m a fan of the Vampire Academy series and I haven’t even finished it yet. This book was incredible. From beginning to end, it had me hooked. There was SO much going on in this book and it was hard to keep track of what was going to happen, what could possibly happen. Richelle Mead has completely mastered the idea of a red herring. She has your attention for so long on something and then suddenly, wham! Something happens that you honestly would have never expected and it leaves you wanting to throw the book against the wall. Not in a bad way though, in the best way. I was left absolutely flabbergasted, unaware that this was the way the book was going to end. I am COMPLETELY broke right now and am unable to purchase the fourth book right now, and I hate that. I want to know what happens next!

I really like that in this book, you really start to see more of Rose’s personality outside of her duty. Because of the events that have taken place in previous novels, she’s kind of a wreck in this novel but she refuses to believe for a moment that she is. She continues to stand tall, and straight and she refuses to ever let anyone think something is wrong because of her duty. She doesn’t want Lissa to know because Lissa will feel anxiety and Rose is extremely protective of Lissa and is her future guardian and doesn’t want to cause burden on her. She doesn’t want to share it with Dimitri, I feel, because it makes her look weak and it makes her look maybe younger, and that’s the last she wants. She’s in the last stages of her guardian training and its so hard for her. But as she starts to sort sift through the things going on in her life, she starts to focus more on herself and less on everyone else. She starts to question all the things she’s been taught is 100% law her entire life.

And I really like that direction that she’s going in, even if I’m confused and scared and anxious about where it will take her. I appreciate that Rose is dhampir, a guardian and that she wants to protect Lissa, but I’ve always felt like everything in the world gets set aside for that, including her own personal choices and life. She doesn’t really get to choose where to go to school; she’ll go to school wherever Lissa goes to school. She can’t choose to be with the one she loves because of her duties as a guardian. There is a lot holding her back and I feel like there is a huge part of this novel where she starts to question that and I like that. I like that Rose is not stuck in her ways, but she questions and she changes and she challenges and its going to be interesting to find out where this goes in the next few books.

I don’t want to say too much more because I fear that I will spoil it all but I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. There was so much that Richelle Mead put into this novel. There was a TON of action, there was friendship and romance and there were loyalties tested, and there was the psychology of what was going on with Rose that causes a lot of tension and anxiety and there’s just a lot going on in this book. From page one to the very end, it had me absolutely hooked and I can’t wait to speed through the rest of it to find out what happens next to the characters. She has a beautiful world built and a wonderful, exciting and gripping story going on and I am already so addicted.

So call me a fan. I’m a bandwagon fan, but I’m here. These books are SO good so far.
