MY REVIEW
I’m going to keep this short and sweet as the story itself was short and sweet. There were things that I liked about it and there were things about it. To start, other than writing The Dark Artifices, The Last Hours and The Wicked Powers (which is a lot, now that I think about it), I think Cassie should move along in the Shadowhunter world. She’s a great writer and I’d love to see her explore something other than Shadowhunter. That being said…
I did like seeing Jem again, even if it was in his incarnation of Brother Zachariah. Jem is a great, complex character and I’m always happy to see more of him, especially when he interacts with Jace. It was interesting that he was a part of the story but as soon as Raphael tells him that werewolves are bringing in yin fen, it totally made sense as that had been such a component of his life before he was a Silent Brother and it reminded me all of the emotions we went through with Jem in Infernal Devices.
I also liked seeing Jace come to the Lightwood family. The Lightwoods are my absolute favorite and I still consider Jace a Lightwood, even with his Herondale last name. So seeing him meet his family, seeing little Isabelle and Alec, seeing Maryse and Robert interact with him, hearing Maryse give him the name of Jace…it all made me really happy. Its a story we’ve heard before but not directly so that was really great.
I didn’t like how it made things sort of weird. Jace meets Brother Zachariah aka Jem in this story so meeting him later seems sort of weird and I think Izzy sees him as well, so again, weird. The whole fight that Jace is involved in because he’s being transported on the boat that is also transporting yin fen…it was cool but I feel like that would have been important to Jace, something that would have been mentioned in TMI so it just felt…inauthentic? Ingeniune? Almost like fan fiction? It just seemed really weird to me so I wasn’t a fan of that particular part.
In general, I was entertained by the story and I’m curious to see what other stories comes from this series, even if I am starting to get a little worn thin from the never ending Shadowhunter stories. Even then, I love love love Shadowhunters soooo I’m going to end up reading all of them anyway. So there’s that haha.
