GOODREADS SUMMARY:

When King Jameson declares his love for Lady Hollis Brite, Hollis is shocked—and thrilled. After all, she’s grown up at Keresken Castle, vying for the king’s attention alongside other daughters of the nobility. Capturing his heart is a dream come true.

But Hollis soon realizes that falling in love with a king and being crowned queen may not be the happily ever after she thought it would be. And when she meets a commoner with the mysterious power to see right into her heart, she finds that the future she really wants is one that she never thought to imagine.

MY REVIEW

I. LOVED. THIS. BOOK.

It felt SO good to be back in a Kiera Cass world. Her worlds are always so romantic and beautiful. The clothes are gorgeous and the food is delicious and it always seems like a fairy tale even when its totally not a fairy tale. Her books are literally so so beautiful. As soon as I started reading this book, I was immediately in. Kiera Cass is magic and I was immediately engrossed in Hollis and her world and what was going to happen. The characters were immediately likable, except maybe Hollis’s parents and I genuinely felt like I was back in a Cass novel. I loved all the unique names, something that she’s known for and pulls off so well.

I even really really liked the King. I know you weren’t supposed to really like him and you were supposed to like the commoner more, and I did!, but I did like the king. I think he had all of the right intentions and that he was genuinely just trying to do his job and do his duty and I think that’s why the book felt so emotional and hard for me. I could see how difficult it was for Hollis to figure out which direction her life is supposed to take and its hard to know what the right decision is and what the right decision for you is and Kiera really nailed that down because I FELT it. I honestly was torn between wanting her to do her duty and marry the king and follow her heart and follow Silas and his seriously wonderful family. She made the choice hard, at least to this reader. I do not feel like it was an obvious choice.

What really sold this as a five star read for me was the ending. I read The Selection quite a long time ago so I thought I was pretty well versed into knowing what kind of books that Kiera writes but she threw me for a loop on this ending and it was AMAZING. It was heartbreaking but also powerful and I was genuinely shocked, it takes a lot for something to happen in a book that genuinely makes me feel like, WOW, DID THAT JUST HAPPEN, and that absolutely happened with this book, truly I was blown away. It left us with a cliffhanger wondering WHAT on earth was going to happen next and I honestly can’t wait. Usually a first book can stand on its own really well, with a slight cliffhanger but not this one. This one took some turns I never imagined and then left me wondering what could happen next. This book doesn’t release until May which makes me sad because that means its only THAT much longer until book two.

I need it now.
