Short N’Sweet Book Review: Sunkissed by Kasie West

Welcome to the Short N’ Sweet Book Review! For the almost nine years that I’ve been reviewing books on this blog, I’ve written long, wordy reviews that, let’s be honest, not a lot of people are probably reading. This year I decided to shorten those reviews and get straight to the point – what is this book about, who wrote it, where you can find and a short review on what I loved, liked and maybe thought could be better.

Today’s review features a perfect summer read, reminiscent of those days when the possibilities of summer felt endless and full of Dirty Dancing vibes – Sunkissed by Kasie West.

ABOUT THE BOOK

A lighthearted and swoony contemporary YA romance by fan-favorite author Kasie West about a girl who finds that a summer spent at a family resort isn’t as bad as she imagined…and that falling in love is filled with heartache, laughter, and surprises!

After being betrayed by her best friend, Avery is hoping for a picture-perfect summer. Too bad her parents have dragged her and her sister to a remote family camp for the entire summer. And that’s not even the worst part. Avery also has to deal with no internet, a cute but off-limits staff member, and an always-in-her-face sister.

But what starts as a disaster turns into a whirlwind summer romance as Avery embarks on an unexpected journey to figure out what she truly wants and who she wants to be.

SHORT N’SWEET REVIEW

Do you ever have book cravings? You know, you are SO in the mood for a certain kind of book but you can’t seem to find the right book. I’ve been in DIRE need of a fun, summer romance and I was hoping so much that Sunkissed would fill that craving. And guess what? It absolutely. I read this book before bed, two nights in a row, finishing the entire thing in probably a total of about four hours. I was HOOKED right away. It reminded me so much of Dirty Dancing, which was one of my favorite movies as a teenager, so I was immediately just in love. I laughed at the idea of this resort with no service so the two sisters, Avery, and her younger sister, Lauren, are just distraught but let’s be real – I’d be absolutely hopeless without my phone and I totally understand their dismay. Of course, it ends up being a great summer – cute boys, a band, new friends, a ton of stuff to do and finding yourself in the process. I loved how family was so heavily involved because I’m so close to my family and we haven’t done a summer family vacation since I was a teenager and it brought a lot of happy nostalgia. I also really loved that there was so much interaction between Avery and Lauren – I am a sucker for a sister story. I have two younger sisters that are very close in age to me and I adore them to death and so I love to read the ups and downs of sisters, especially as teens because, oh boy, are those some volatile times haha. Lastly, I always love the romances Kasie writes because they are always so sweet and so fresh and so full of possibility and so full of all the wonderful things that come with falling in love. Brooks was such a lovable love interest and I loved watching him and Avery come together. I think this book was the PERFECT way to kick off summer – because its basically summer here in Southern California – and was the perfect answer to my craving.

RATING:

5 out of 5 Stars
