MY REVIEW
Please be advised that while I try to keep my reviews as spoiler free as possible, it is almost nearly impossible to do so. This is your warning to perhaps avoid the review until you’ve read the book!
This book is so incredibly fascinating. From the moment that Gretchen started talking about it, I knew I had to get my hands on it and I’m so glad that I did and its definitely a book that you should preorder above because its was SO good and SO fun and so brutal.
Dee is stuck in a reality show that runs 24 hours a day, and its her punishment for being found guilty for her stepsister’s murder, except she’s not guilty of it, and it doesn’t seem like anyone on Alcatraz 2.0 that is indisputably guilty. That gives so much more to an already great story, because there’s this idea of, there’s something so much more than serious criminals being slaughtered on television for the enjoyment of the masses. What is actually going on with this island and why are these particular people targeted and so many questions?
What I’ll say about Gretchen is that often she presents a lot of questions, sometimes answers, sometimes doesn’t and then leaves us with a thousand more at the end and it makes you want to keep reading, even if you don’t get that option (though we do get a sequel for this one, yay!) She is so good at world building and she’s damn good with a mystery and a body count and I think she only gets better as she keeps writing and she definitely answers some questions but leaves me with a million more when I finished the last page and now I’m insanely impatient for book two, and book one hasn’t even been published yet!
What I’ll also say about this book is that the deaths are so FUN to read, which sounds like I’m a totally messed up person but seriously, I’m impressed at the world that Gretchen builds for Alcatraz 2.0. The different killers have these crazy identities and such elaborate ways to kill the prisoners on the island are SO creative and I’m so envious of this writing. Seriously, I feel like I could never come up with something like this, with a Robin Hood killer and the twins and all kinds of different ones and they have their own killing warehouses and they’re catered to their characters. It was FASCINATING to read and it would make a seriously interesting movie or tv show. Even in just the reading of it, it is SO visual and Gretchen does a phenomenal job of making it so real in your own mind.
