Fandom Foodie Friday {2} – Blue Chocolate Chip Cookies from Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Hello! Welcome to the Fandom Foodie Friday! If there’s one thing that always grabs my attention when I’m reading a new book or watching a TV show or movie, its the FOOD. Whether fictional or real, I often am left wanting to try ALL the foods. The only problem – I’m a terrible cook and an okay baker. So I’m taking recipes created by wonderfully creative people from all over the internet and figuring out if a newbie like me can figure them out!

Today, I made blue chocolate chip cookies, just like Sally Jackson would make them for her son Percy in Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series!

I love to read about food in books and I love food in movies and TV shows. I’ve always wanted to try making them but I’m honestly a terrible cook – I rarely make anything without heating something up easily in the microwave or the stove. I am not nearly as creative as some of the amazing people on the internet who come up with some amazing fictional food recipes! So I decided to approach it from a different angle – I would find recipes for some of my favorite food in fiction and try them out and share it with you! Are they easy? Are they doable? Did I mess up? Did it taste good?

And, of course, I’ll always give credit to the recipes that I tried!

“We walked on the beach, fed blue corn ships to the seagulls, and munched on blue jelly beans, blue saltwater taffy and all the other free samples my mom brought home from work.

I guess I should explain the blue food.

See, Gabe had once told my mom there was no such thing. They had this fight, which seemed like a really small thing at the time. But ever since, my mom went out of her way to eat blue. She baked blue birthday cakes. She mixed blueberry smoothies. She bought blue-corn tortilla chips and brought home blue candy from the shop.”

–Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

If you’ve ever read the Percy Jackson series, you’ll know that there is something fun and sentimental about blue food. The relationship between Percy and his mother is such a pivotal part of this series and their love for blue food was their way of rebelling against the awful Gabe for so long. The first time Percy eats at Camp Half Blood and enjoys nectar and ambrosia, it tastes like his mom’s blue chocolate chip cookies and it reminds him of home.

Its been years and years and years since I made cookies from scratch – I’m more of a break and bake type of gal – so I was really nervous about doing it, especially since I don’t have a hand or standing mixer. Bryt at In Literature was the first recipe I came upon in my search and it looked easy, there weren’t too many ingredients and I thought I could manage it. You can check out her recipe here.

The Ingredients – Flour, Sugar, Brown Sugar, 2 Eggs, Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips, Butter, Blue Food Coloring.

Ignore the vanilla extract, it was bought for next week’s foodie Friday and I stuck it in the picture because I forgot!

Cost To Me – I did not have any of these ingredients. I went to Smart and Final and for all of the ingredients, it came out to about $15! Not bad!

Time It Took – It took about 20 minutes to make the actual batter. It was 15 minutes pretty solid to bake them.

Me feeling super anxious about the cookies in the oven

The Difficulty Level –

out of 5

Honestly, it wasn’t super hard. I’m a messy cook/baker so I just feel like I got it EVERYWHERE. There was sugar and flour everywhere and I’m pretty sure my hands are still blue from the food coloring. The hardest part for me was the fact I don’t own a mixing bowl – I know, I know – so I made it in a pot LOL and it just got everywhere. It was also a little difficult to do without a mixer but I did pretty well considering, just had to put a little elbow grease into it.

The Taste –

 out of 5

I think they came out good. They were super gooey and they tasted like tasty chocolate chip cookies. They weren’t anything crazy special but I think they came out good. I would definitely eat more, except for the whole diabetes thing. My boyfriend gave it a 3 out of 5 and I mostly agree with that. They were standard chocolate chip cookies that I definitely enjoyed but I won’t be bragging about them anytime soon.

The End Result –

I am really so stoked with how they came out as far as appearance. They’re a little more turquoise than blue but still, they look so great. They’re a little lumpy instead of perfect and round but I couldn’t seem to get them in a good circle haha. I even manage to take my Coke Zero and turned it blue!

I do think I got a little chocolate chip happy but let’s be real – can you really have too many chocolate chips? CAN YOU?!

“It was chocolate-chip cookies. Liquid cookies. And not just any cookies – my mom’s homemade blue chocolate-chip cookies, buttery and hot, with the chips still melting.”

Don’t forget to check out In Literature for this recipe and so many more!

Happy Fandom Foodie Friday!
