Fandom Foodie Friday {4} – Peeta’s Cheese Buns from The Hunger Games Trilogy

Hello! Welcome to the Fandom Foodie Friday! If there’s one thing that always grabs my attention when I’m reading a new book or watching a TV show or movie, its the FOOD. Whether fictional or real, I often am left wanting to try ALL the foods. The only problem – I’m a terrible cook and an okay baker. So I’m taking recipes created by wonderfully creative people from all over the internet and figuring out if a newbie like me can figure them out!

Today, I made cheese buns, just like Peeta would make for Katniss in Catching Fire, the second (and best) book of The Hunger Games Trilogy!

I promise I didn’t throw mine to the pigs…

I love to read about food in books and I love food in movies and TV shows. I’ve always wanted to try making them but I’m honestly a terrible cook – I rarely make anything without heating something up easily in the microwave or the stove. I am not nearly as creative as some of the amazing people on the internet who come up with some amazing fictional food recipes! So I decided to approach it from a different angle – I would find recipes for some of my favorite food in fiction and try them out and share it with you! Are they easy? Are they doable? Did I mess up? Did it taste good?

And, of course, I’ll always give credit to the recipes that I tried!

“Peeta comes by every day to bring me cheese buns adn begins to help me work on the family. Its an old thing made of parchment and leather.”

Not surprisingly, considering the title, The Hunger Games is chock full of food. In fact, food and hunger is mentioned almost on every single page. There are plenty of good inspirations for fandom foods in that book but one of the ones that sticks out the most to me is Peeta’s cheese buns. I think anything Peeta makes is made with love, he does it not just because he was taught it as the baker’s son but because he’s good at it and he enjoys it. Catching Fire is a rough book for our characters so a simple thing like Peeta making cheese buns for Katniss is sweet and kind and so full of love.

Once again, I used a recipe from Alison’s Wonderland Recipes (she was also my inspiration for my Ponyo ramen, which you can read here). She took the recipe from the official Hunger Games cookbook and tweaked it a little bit. It sounded like something I could accomplish and I still haven’t bought a mixer, hand or standing, so I figured it was also doable with a little elbow grease too. You can check out Alison’s recipe here.

The Ingredients – Milk, Granulated Sugar, Bisquick, Sharp Cheddar Cheese, Garlic Powder and Oregano. If you decide to do the butter wash – which I did at the last second – it is also kosher salt, butter and garlic powder.

Cost To Me – For everything, I would say about 20-25 dollars, if you’re buying everything. I already had sugar and garlic powder. Everything else was about $15.

Time It Took – I would say it took about 30 minutes to complete.

The Difficulty Level –

 out of 5

I was actually really impressed with how easy this was and how much you totally did NOT need a mixer. I made the biscuits too big – the recipe said it made 12 buns and I made 6 large ones and 2 medium size ones. I did use almond milk rather than regular milk because I’m technically lactose intolerant and I wasn’t going to buy an entire thing of regular milk just for this. I also made the butter wash, but cut the measurements in half to cut back on the saltiness that Alison mentioned in her post.

Other than that, genuinely, it was really easy and honestly really quick too. It took me longer because I had never made it before but making it again, I could probably could cut the time by ten minutes or so.

The Taste –

 out of 5

These are SOOOOO delicious. I was so happy with how good they turned out and I honestly can see myself making these in the future for dinner or a party or something. It was easy and delicious and I was really proud of myself for managing it. I am not lying when I say I’m impossible with anything that isn’t just microwavable so I was happy when I bit into this and was like OMG YUM. Daniel gave it a five out of five so I’m really stoked about this recipe. It was cheesy and nice and fluffy and cutting the measurements on the butter wash worked really well – it added some taste but it wasn’t salty or overwhelming.

The End Result –

Honestly I think that this is my favorite one that I’ve made so far. Not only did they taste absolutely amazing, but they look really good too. They made my kitchen smell SOOO great and they were really fluffy and amazing. This has been the one recipe so far that I know I would for sure make again, without fail. It was easier than I thought it was going to be – I kept debating on whether I could manage it – and it tasted really good. I had to keep myself to just one bun since, you know, diabetic and carbs and all. But there’s always tomorrow…

  1. Alison's Wonderland Recipes says:

I’m so glad you mentioned the aroma, because that’s the thing I remember most about making these. The whole time they were in the oven I was like “My kitchen smells like pizza yuuuuuuuum!”

    • Erin says:

I had already eaten dinner when I made these so I was sitting there, smelling the aroma, and just being like, YOU’RE NOT EVEN HUNGRY SARA!
