Fandom Friday-The Covenant Series

The Fandom Friday is a weekly feature, with each blog post written by a new contributor.

This is the weekly post where either myself, or a guest blogger, talks about a new fandom. See, I’ve had the experience in my life where I’ve been made fun or put down about my particular fandoms. And that has made me feel pretty crappy. But I’ve also put down other fandoms as well.

So I’ve decided to change that. I’m opening my world up to new fandoms, and the best way to do that is to bring people in to write about various fandoms. I’m very excited about this segment.

If you guys are interested in becoming a guest blogger for the Fandom Friday, feel free to email me at whatanerdgirlsays at gmail.com or contact me HERE

This week’s post comes Eilidh, from Scotland, who is a good TMI friend of mine. She is the brains behind the Twitter account, @TMIScotland and co-runs The British Nephilim. Read more about her!

Hey guys, my name is Eilidh (excuse the name, it’s Scottish. For those interested it’s pronounced Ay-lee – stupid, I know!) But I also go by the name Mrs Bower (yes, I am completely obsessed with Jamie Campbell Bower!). I’m 18, and I run TMIScotland on Twitter (because I am also obsessed with The Mortal Instruments) and co-run britishnephilim.com – a site dedicated to TMI. I study Business Management at university, however am currently working on my first novel while on summer break.

Now, Eilidh is here to talk to you about another series of Jennifer L. Armentrout‘s, the Covenant series. A few weeks ago, Megan from Luxen Army, talked about Jennifer’s Lux series, which you can read here :)

Check it out!

The Covenant Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout!

I’m here to speak to you about the Covenant Series, written by the amazing JL Armentrout. JLA has also written another series called Lux, if you haven’t read that, you should!!! and also you can read about it here.

A friend recommended that I should read Lux, as soon as I finished it, she demanded that I read Covenant. I am so glad she did because this series is amazing, and I prefer it to Lux (I’m sorry, don’t shoot me – Lux is still amazing!!).

There are 7 books in the series, Daimon is the prequel to the series (I didn’t know about this until I did my research into it!), Half-Blood is the first book, then Pure, next Deity, Elixir, Apollyon, and lastly Sentinel (which will be released November 2nd 2013). (please note – Elixir is a novella, and it is extremely important you read this if you want to thoroughly understand the next book.)

The story is in Alexandria (Alex) Andros’ point of view. She is a Hematoi, the race that this story revolves around. Hematoi are the descendants of gods who have had unions with mortals. However, Alex had been taken away from the Covenant by her mother for reasons unknown.

There are multiple Covenants around the world that house the Hematoi. In the Covenants, youngsters attend classes learn to train as a Sentinel (daimon hunters). Covenants also deal with any wrongdoings that the Hematoi may commit, and punish them accordingly. Within the Hematoi community, there is segregation. They are divided due to blood status, Half-Blood and Pure Blood. Halfs are not treated as equals to the Pures, and the biggest rule between Pures and Halfs? No relationships between the two blood types.

The story begins with 17-year old Alex, who is a half, waking up to some daimons roaming around her, searching for any Hematoi. Soon enough, she is battling a few of them, but she is assisted by the wonderful Aiden St Delphi, a pure Sentinel, in ridding the place of those horrid daimons.

During the series, it is evident that Alex has a tough time complying to rules, however she’s always doing it for the greater good. She is snarky and stubborn, but she is fierce and dedicated to everything she does. Without a doubt, Alex is my favourite female character of any book series I have read!

Aiden is also an amazing character, and as the story goes on I have my moments where I want to snap his neck and others where I wish part of the book just to meet him.

There are SO many other characters in this series that I want to fan-girl about, but I want you to discover them for yourselves. You will fall in love with them, so much so that your heart will break at multiple parts of the book just because of how they act or what they do.

Personally, this series is third to The Mortal Instruments and Harry Potter, beating The Lux Series, The Infernal Devices and Divergent. I would thoroughly recommend this book series to everyone who loves Young Adult literature, it is a perfect summer read! If you want a series that will keep you up all night, and in my case, throw your kindle at the wall – then this is the series for you.

This whole new world kept surprising me, especially when I least expected it (like I said, kindle off the wall kinda thing). There’s a lot more to the series than rule-breaking and hot Sentinels. JLA’s writing kept me wanting more, and allows you to understand every character around Alex without actually being inside their heads. You can feel as if you’re in the same room as Aiden, and experience Alex’s emotions as if you’re taking this journey yourself. For me, I relate a lot to Alex, so the connection I had with her character heightened my love for this series further. Alex is someone that I think, if she was a living being, that everyone could relate to and love easily, no matter how much she breaks the rules.

(Can I just say how hard it was to write this without speaking about Apollyons and sexy gods?!)
