Sweet N’Sweet Book Review: Waiting for Tom Hanks by Kerry Winfrey

Welcome to the Short N’ Sweet Book Review! For the ten years that I’ve been reviewing books on this blog, I’ve written long, wordy reviews that, let’s be honest, not a lot of people are probably reading. I’ve recently  decided to shorten those reviews and get straight to the point – what is this book about, who wrote it, where you can find and a short review on what I loved, liked and maybe thought could be better.

Today’s review features a book that takes everything you love about your favorite rom-com movies and turns it into a comfy, cozy and fun novel to read, Waiting for Tom Hanks by Kerry Winfrey!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Can a romcom-obsessed romantic finally experience the meet-cute she always dreamed of or will reality never compare to fiction, in this charming debut adult novel from Kerry Winfrey.

Annie is twenty-seven years old, single, and obsessed with romantic comedies (she and her mother watched them religiously, before her mom died). Her dating life is limited by the expectations she’s formed from these movies. She is not as open to new experiences as she might be, because she’s waiting for her Tom Hanks–i.e., a guy she’ll find in the perfect, meet-cute romantic comedy way. When Annie does finally meet her perfect match, it’s not quite in the way she expected, and she’s forced to reckon with the walls she’s built around herself over the years.

SHORT N’SWEET REVIEW

This book has been sitting on my shelf since I purchased it a few months ago. On Memorial Day, we went to the beach and I decided to bring a book with me and grabbed the first one I spotted on the shelf. I ended up finishing the book that day. This was that book.

For one thing, I was at the beach and guys, I always feel so relaxed and at peace at the beach, even though I hardly ever get in the water because I’m not a good swimmer and the riptides can be bad and I’m scared of drowning. But I love laying on a blanket and getting nice and brown (safely, of course) and reading a book. This book was the perfect beach read book. Even surrounded by my friends and chatting and hanging out, I managed to knock out over 100 pages before we left because I was obsessed so fast. This book is all about rom coms and a character, Annie, who is obsessed but the book itself is a rom com and it was so fun and romantic and funny and I loved all the side characters like Uncle Don and Nick and Chloe and Gary and Tommy. It felt exactly like the chaotic fun of a rom com and I ate it up. I loved the Dungeons and Dragons too – my husband is a huge fan, I’m a fair fan and I just appreciated it haha.

I also just felt so connected with Annie. Though this girl took a little longer than I did to get my heads out of the clouds, I totally understood her! I am absolutely obsessed with romance – books and movies – and for the longest time, I was looking for the kind of relationship that you find in books, without realizing that relationships in real life are so much more complicated, they are different and that’s okay! It took me a long time to get over that and I knew that Annie would get there too but I could see myself in her and I wanted to shake her so much and tell her, Annie, the houseboat doesn’t matter! But because I have so totally been there and so I totally got it. It can be hard to compare real life with those beautiful moments in books, or in Annie’s case, movies. It can be frustrating but I was right there along with her because I just SO got it.

I also just love books and movies where a famous person falls in love with an every day person because its just fun. We get the fun of the glitz and glamour and all of that and we get to experience it alongside the “normal” person and I love seeing them fall in love and its just so freaking fun. I love royals stories so much but I love famous people stories like this just after that haha. I wrote one myself ages ago but it was such TRASH haha so I just enjoy other’s books.

Lastly, this book builds up book TWO so well, which I didn’t even know existed until I got to the end of the book and there was a sneak peek of book two. Chloe and Nick have such a fun relationship and I can’t wait to see how it plays out but my library doesn’t have it and I don’t have the $$$ for it yet and AGH. I just can’t wait to read it. Kerry is awesome!

RATING:

4 out of 5 Stars
